The Last Frontiersmen
Overall a good study of the last great westward folk migration in American history. I would add that many of their predecessors in the "classic" frontier period were just as broke and hungry as these migrants, but there was little mass media around to record them.An interesting, well-done slice of folk Americana.

A great companion to Grapes of Wrath
James Gregory has put together a outstanding history of the migration and culture of the dust bowl migrants who settled in California.I have probably read Grapes of Wrath four or five times since first reading it in high school, but after reading Gregory's description of the way these poor south-westerners struggled with poverty and at the same time maintained family unity and cultural pride, Steinbeck's book takes on a whole new meaning.Gregory goes step by step to show what motivated many to move, and then what motivated them to stay even though they suffered great privations and predjudice.I especially enjoyed learning about the influences of country music not just upon the migrants, but on the entire nation.A must read to make Grapes more clear!

American Exodus: Okies in California How They Really Were
I thought that this was a good book.I read it for a history course on the Great Depression and it was definately worth reading.It can get a little bogged down in detail or a little dull ocassionally, but overall itis a good view of "okie culture". It really helped be tounderstand the diversity and impact of the migration. And it contains a fewinteresting personal stories as well!

Excellent overview
This book provides an excellent overview of the history of the dust bowl Okies and the culture they (we) have created in central California.Gregory explores the religion, music, and politics well in clear language. The book is short enough to be enjoyable and while goes into some depth ona few issues, it is not so filled with unimportant details as to bemuddled.Gregory sprinkles the text with brief excerpts of the manyinterviews he conducted with the Okies. ... A story of true friendship
It is not often that a "nice" biography involving a world leader is written, but Goodbye Bafana is the exception to this rule and James Gregory only has praise for "his friend" Nelson Mandela.

Goodbye Bafana cronicals the life and experiences of James Gregory up, and until, he becomes Nelson Mandela's jailer in several South African prisions. Gregory writes a compelling and often blunt tale of how his hatred of blacks (he is an Afrikaner) and especially Nelson Mandela was turned around to a respectful and often sympathetic attitude by Mandela with whom he spent many close years as his personal jailer during Mandela's incarceration.

From this book one learns many things about South Africa's first black president and one thing that strikes the reader is his complete dedication to his cause (to end apartheid) and how much respect he has earned from both black and white people during his life. Onced finished one comes away feeling confident that there is not a man more deserving than Mandela running South Africa. excellent book
This book is very well written and has a lot examples and problems.Very useful

Review of 3rd Edition
I've owned the 3rd Edition of this book for about a week now.Therefore, it is difficult for me to give a truly complete review, but I have at least skimmed through the various chapters.This book looks amazing, even for someone with little to no training in MATLAB (like myself).It starts with the basics and quickly moves into the more advanced material without going into unnecessary details about computer programming.It explains how to use the tools you need and gets to the point quick.

I am a graduate student in mechanical engineering and I am very disappointed that a numerical analysis course that utilizes this book was not offered during my undergraduate years.I think it should be mandatory that every senior undergraduate mechanical engineering student fully understand how to utilize MATLAB for solving engineering problems...something that I lacked upon graduating, so now I'm making up for it on my own time with this superb book.

Bottom Line: This book makes the perfect companion for any engineering student interested in learning to solve real-world problems with MATLAB (a commonly used program in the real-world).

I already had a few years of experience with Matlab before purchasing this book, but I still found it to be very useful.It goes through the usual introductory concepts, but then dedicates a significant portion of the book to science and engineering related discussion, which may be useful to those new to Matlab and interested in its field-specific applications.Retuning to the usual introductory concepts, after years of exerience, I found most of it to be "old news", but there were still some elementary functions that I was unaware of and coding techniques that together allow me to write shorter, more time-efficient, and more readable (to outsiders) code.Buy it!

The best
This is one of the best books out there.I not only used it in my vibrations class back as an undergraduate (and I had vibrations with Magrab too!), I have continued to find new ways to use it in the work world today.Dr. Magrab and the others have written a very useful book that definitely relates engineering to this program.

Dang It: I love toilets!
Ok. toilets equate to "yuk", but I have always enjoyed them. First, friend of the modern era, we have them! Some are good, some not so good, some are bad (clogged and filled to the brim). But we have them, and they get a bad rap even though they do us a good thing, mostly.
My copy of this book is placed just for fun; I put it on an easily broken chain (if anyone really wants it) in my guest bedgroom's bath. Inside the book I personally annotated certain toilets around the world that I visited personally (really), including one at the top of Peru (outhouse, basically), and some Asian toilets I remember (2 yrs. in Thailand). I loved every place I lived, not because of the toilets, but I remember them well. So, the irony, I dreaded using some of them at the time, but how fondly I look at the pictures now. What does that mean?

My, my. In short, this book is a book about toilets. Good pictures, primitive history, and rather fun if you are sitting on a toilet and don't have anything else to do while you wait to finish. It's too sparse, and only for fun. Other books tell much more about sewage and piping, and getting water to your house, and waste away from it, an interesting history of just two centuries.. Toilets, that is all this book tells; don't expect more. It's fun.

Somewhat interesting but mostly disappointing
With all 4 & 5 star reviews during the time of my purchase I expected this book to be highly entertaining and great. Perhaps it was my high expectations that created my disappointment.

There are good pictures with interesting commentary about toilets in the various lands where the toilets being photographed originate. However, there are many somewhat repetitive type photos of squat toilets (for example) just in various countries. If there were more variance in the types of squat toilets I'd get it, but many are identical with just a different background....say a bathroom that's dirty looking with pictures on the wall behind and another in a more clean, sterile looking environment or another that also has a sit toilet next to it. Big deal...

So - if you think you'll see really cool, quirky and creepy toilets don't bother. If you're okay with a multitude of thrones that are just in slightly different settings with commentary about the setting, then you might like the book.

One way to get a perspective on the world
This book has a compilation of the typical (and atypical!) toilets from around the world. A guide to how to use the restroom in other countries? No. A fun book to look at while at home in your nice, safe bathroom? Yes.

This is a book which you can pick up and check out some pages with pictures and fun and bizarre information about all kinds of toilets. You don't have to read this from beginning to the end. I think it's fun for both people who travel a lot and have been to places and those who don't but are interested in other cultures. And yes, you can even read it in the toilet...

Two facets to this wonderful book...
For the Potty Humor possibilities alone, this book is worth ten times the money. Share it with friends or as a white elephant gift (though you'll want a copy to keep for yourself!). Don't bother claiming that you have it solely for scholarly reasons...

The book was in good condition and shipped promptly but I expected to also receive an instructor's Workbook with the text which did not sent to me.

Good introductory casebook for law school but with some weaknesses
There are really only two "casebooks" for aviation law in U.S. law schools.This one and "Aviation Law: Cases, Laws, and Related Sources."I have used both of them.In general, I believe the latter is a better all-around introduction but probably not the best for use in the classroom.

As such, if you are not a law student but a lawyer that requires thorough introductory materials then I recommend the other book.In this case, I also recommend the treatise: Aviation Tort & Regulatory Law by West Group.

If you are a law student or law professor teaching aviation law, then I recommend this book.My reasoning is that this book is best suited for the three month semester class and achieving the objectives of learning the basics of aviation law.For the student who is more interested in aviation law, the notes at the end of each section provide for further information on the related subject matter, such as law review articles, cases, regulations or statutes.

That said, I do have several problems with this book.

First, the first chapter, the introduction, is absolutely terrible and essentially useless.To tell the reader about the history of aviation, the authors felt it wise to simply copy and paste this information from Wikipedia.I give them credit for actually having the audacity to not only do this but also to let you know that they did this by citing to it.This is weak.

The introduction could have also provided commentary on the various organizations involved, such as the roles of the U.S. Department of Transportation (economic), FAA (safety) and NTSB (investigative).Instead, the introduction's section on "Sources of Aviation Law" is a bundle of cases and articles that don't provide anything coherent or usable.

In the least, would it have hurt the authors to copy the table of contents from Title 49 of the U.S. Code or Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations to show all the main areas of U.S. aviation law?This would have been an ideal place to also list a lot of aviation legislation (i.e. Airport and Airway Improvement Act, etc.) and conventions (Chicago, Cape Town, etc.), instead of the reader finding out about them over the course of the cases.

Second, there is an over focus on litigation (or case materials) when it comes to aviation law here.There is a great deal of transactional and regulatory practice involved in aviation law.In fact, there is no reason why a law school course in aviation law couldn't be a completely transactional course.It would have been prudent for the authors to provide the text of relevant statutes and regulations.

Third, there is some unnecessary editorializing here by the authors.For instance, the authors found it necessary to comment how "airmen" is such a sexist term.Seriously?

Overall, I recommend this book for the classroom setting - but hope that the professor incorporates real-world transactional and regulatory issues otherwise the professor is depriving the students of really understanding this area of law.Students who are truly interested in this industry should thoroughly review the notes at the end of each section, reading the recommended materials. ...
