Product Description
Although James Laughlin (1914-1997) came from one of Pittsburgh's leading steel-making families, his passions were literary rather than industrial--he wanted to be a poet. Laughlin was a freshman at Harvard when he traveled to Rapallo, Italy, in 1933 to meet Ezra Pound (1885–1972), and he returned the following year to enroll in the poet's "Ezuversity." Pound dismissed Laughlin's poetic talents, advising the wealthy young man to make himself over into a publisher. Laughlin did just that, founding New Directions Press in 1936.

For much of the 1930s prior to World War II, Laughlin and Pound were friends, business associates, collaborators, student and teacher, and even at times son and surrogate father. But Laughlin's investment in Pound--and their friendship--was severely tested by Pound's wartime propaganda broadcasts for Italian state radio, his capture and abortive trial for treason, and his thirteen-year stay as a mental patient in St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Following this scandal and disgrace, the reading public no longer wanted to buy Pound's books, and the critical establishment dismissed him as a Fascist crank.

Laughlin and New Directions responded by marketing Pound in such a way as to convince consumers that the poet's importance needed to be judged solely on aesthetic grounds, and that his political beliefs were irrelevant to his accomplishments as a pioneering literary artist. With Pound's encouragement, and despite the poet's oft-expressed opposition to the mixture of commerce and art, Laughlin used such marketing tools as advertising, the cultivation of friendly critics, and the development of the trade paperback to enhance Pound's reputation.

Drawing on a wide range of sources--including interviews with Laughlin and other New Directions staffers and published materials from numerous literary archives--Gregory Barnhisel tells the story of the personal and professional relationship between one of the twentieth century's most controversial writers and his loyal and innovative American publisher--a relationship that eventually helped remake literary history and continues to shape our understanding of modernism itself. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Author and his publisher
This carefully researched book reveals the role of Ezra Pound's publisher in massaging his reputation, especially after World War II and the poet's disgrace of being confined in a mental institution. It is not entirely clear what specific qualities the publisher found in his poet. However, this book is a contribution to the now embattled Gutenberg Galaxy, the field of book culture, which is not always they way we simple readers would expect.I spent five years in publishing and found the account very believable. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Corporate branding consultant promotes his view
Before buying this book it may help you to know that the writer is CEO of CoreBrand - Corporate Branding LLC, a smaller version of Roper Starch Worldwide, or Interbrand. As such it treads a thin line between general usefulness to the marketing manager and promotional material for CoreBrands own proprietary models such as their "brand power" ranking system. Although the book does not give away too many secrets about how CoreBrand's models actually work.

Whether the text will be of use to you depends largely on your needs. For a marketing manager the price of this book is a lot cheaper than a consultant's per diem. For an MSc or MBA in Marketing this book is not academically rigorous enough to be of much use to you. There are a wealth of academic texts that will give greater insight and hard case evidence into the pros and cons of globalizing brands. Author names to search under are Aaker, Keller, Usunier, Jeannet, Hollensen, Kashani among others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's no excuse not to buy this book!
I agree with Bill Murray (in the Editorial Reviews section) that not enough people will read this book. It is priced moderately enough that there should be no excuse for any collector not to buy one. As one who collects both coins and banknotes, I find very often too much emphasis is given to coins; very little to banknotes. Fortunately, the book does not omit banknotes. (Just a prejudice of mine!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Numismatic Book of the Year
My name is Lee Martin and I am the founder of the Numismatic Literary Guild. I have been privileged to review many books and usually they are mostsatisfactory, however few are regarded by me as N.L.G. Book of the Yearmaterial. This book, in my view, merits that thought. It is for everyone in numismatics and is even a "must have" for those who maybecome heirs, but lack the know-how of what to do next. Senior citizens, like myself, will be especially happy with the interesting stories of estates, etc. I had intended to just scan the book but it was so interesting I stayed withit until I had read it all. EVERYONE should own it if coins are involved in their activities. I highly recommend this book and wish to congratulate all involved in its production.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for fathers
This book is an excellent resource for men who want to better raise their children, and become better fathers. It teaches how we can become wiser in a world that is content with dumbing us down and how to stand up for our beliefs and what is right. It uses the Bible as its resource and the examples of wise Biblical leaders such as Solomon. It's easy to read and undertand, and I definitely recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fatherhood is Forever
This is not a study of Proverbs but a study of Christian fatherhood issues for men who have chosen or considering that worldview. In that case FFF would be a great tool for a young men's discipleship study or a father - son study. A hardback copy would be an excellent gift idea. The book is filled with fun, colorful illustrations that make reading easy. The author deals with the usual social ills of words, sex, temper, alcohol, money, work and friends. The strategy of the outline should not be overlooked: What is fatherhood? What are the issues? What will you do? As a father, leader and discipler of four (now seven) children and grandfather of five, this will certainly be a top shelf reference in my library. Men who understand and are in the game should strongly consider this book. If the cover picture doesn't hook you, don't buy it. ... Read more

It has been only since the 1960s that dangerous petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides have been in widespread use, so any serious gardening "how to" treatise published prior to 1960 will, quite "naturally," exclude their use. "Origiganic" is a new word we have coined here at Better Days Books to describe these time-tested, chemical-free "original" methods of growing food in our backyards, gardens and even on full scale farms. 1-0 out of 5 stars The worst tarot book ever!
This must surely be the worst tarot book ever written.
Totally banal, especially the section "101 frequently asked questions.", these are supposed to be psychic questions e.g. "My boyfriend smokes. ......Is it unreasonable for me to ask himto quit smoking?".?????!!!! And most of all the book is stupendously overpriced, with very little helpful information at all; and a misleading title as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money
This book is without a doubt the least informative Tarot book I've ever read. The section regarding the "most frequently asked psychic questions" is larger than the informational section giving card meanings. The Minor Arcana cards are given only the briefest description - in fact, they are all given on the same page - all 4 suits! It reads like a vacation brochure. The one saving grace is the guide for putting the cards together in an actual spread. Otherwise, this book is only for someone looking for the VERY bare essentials. ... Read more

Product Description

In recent years the American public has witnessed several hard-fought battles over nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court. In these heated confirmation fights, candidates' legal and political philosophies have been subject to intense scrutiny and debate. Citizens, Courts, and Confirmations examines one such fight--over the nomination of Samuel Alito--to discover how and why people formed opinions about the nominee, and to determine how the confirmation process shaped perceptions of the Supreme Court's legitimacy.

Drawing on a nationally representative survey, James Gibson and Gregory Caldeira use the Alito confirmation fight as a window into public attitudes about the nation's highest court. They find that Americans know far more about the Supreme Court than many realize, that the Court enjoys a great deal of legitimacy among the American people, that attitudes toward the Court as an institution generally do not suffer from partisan or ideological polarization, and that public knowledge enhances the legitimacy accorded the Court. Yet the authors demonstrate that partisan and ideological infighting that treats the Court as just another political institution undermines the considerable public support the institution currently enjoys, and that politicized confirmation battles pose a grave threat to the basic legitimacy of the Supreme Court.

Product Description

This book recounts the life and achievements of Clarence King, widely recognized as one of America’s most gifted intellectuals of the nineteenth century, and a legendary figure in the American West.King’s genius, singular accomplishments, and near-death adventures unfold in a narrative centered on his personal relationship with his lifelong friend and colleague, James Gardner. The two, upon completing their studies at Yale, traveled by wagon train across the continent and worked with the California Geological Survey.King went on to establish the Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel, a government mapping program that stretched across the western mountain chains from California to Wyoming. This was the precursor to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).Founded in 1879, with Clarence King as its architect and first director, the USGS became the most important and influential science agency in the nation.

The adventurous aspects of conducting geological fieldwork in the West, much of them documented by letters written by King and Gardner, punctuate a book copiously illustrated with historic maps and photographs showing localities and people important to the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Account of Science and Adventure in the Early West
Who ever said that history was dry?Moore has interwoven first rate field science history with a series of captivating adventures in which American geologist Clarence King and his best friend, James Gardner are repeatedly thrown into life-threatening situations, including being spread-eagled by Indians with the makings of a fire set upon their stomachs in order to effect the most slow and unbearable death; another adventure finds King galloping ahead of bandits intent on taking his life.

Moore's account of the life and accomplishments of Clarence King, whom Henry Adams (the prominent Harvard professor and descendant of two presidents) called the greatest American of his age, is based partly on letters and other primary historical materials that Moore himself unearthed. In the 1850's, Yale-trained prodigy King, at age 25, organized and led a precurser to the U.S. Geological Survey called the "United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel", hence the book's title: "King of the 40th Parallel".Such a lofty appointment of one so young certifies to the inordinate esteem in which the young King was held by those in power in Washington.King's fortieth parallel survey was so brilliantly conceived and cornucopian in its accomplishments, that three competing federal surveys, formed shortly afterward to map other regions of the nation, patterened themselves after his model. His singular performance in leading the survey for twelve years and writing and editing a landmark series of volumes and atlases propelled him at the age of 37 into the directorship of the U.S. Geological Survey at its founding in 1879.And the astonishing, secret details of King's private life -- unknown to all until his death -- will make the reader yearn for a full length sequel.

Who better than to have written this history? In the preface to this excellent and fascinating book, science historian William Glen notes that James Moore is uniquely equipped for the job. That claim seems justified as the thoughts, activities, and scientific products of Clarence King are voluably unfolded, revealing significant overlap with much of Moore's own distinguished geologic career. Both men earned their exceptional reputations in Earth science mainly through years of pioneering field work in the American West.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Scientist's Take on an Extrordinary Surveyor
I really enjoyed King of the 40th Parallel by James Moore.Much has been written about the extraordinary Clarence King, the leader of the 40th Parallel Expedition and the first director of the United States Geological Survey. And no wonder,-King is fascinating, not only for his contributions to the exploration of the West, but for his superstar personality.
I have known the author as a friend and colleague for many years and as a geologist, I appreciate Jim's details of King's geographical and geological explorations.Jim Moore brings to King's biography his own expertise in geology and geography, having spent many years studying the geology of the Sierra.Moore's varied geological adventures, from mapping Sierra granites to seabottom explorations off Hawaii, give him an explorer kinship with King.Jim has enriched King's story with background material of the procedures and instrumentation of that early cartography. He expands on the lives of King's significant colleagues, and he has noted the many firsts in geologic and geographic discoveries. The meticulous observations and recordings of King's surveys became baseline standard for the U.S. Geological Survey when it was established in 1879.

Jim has not dramatized some of the stranger twists in King's life, but presented them in astraight forward manner.Jim's book is rich in material from original letters, especially newly-discovered letters of King's colleague, James Gardner, to his mother during the explorations.Gardner was a life-long friend of King and chief topographer on his expeditions. In addition, the book is rich in pictures and drawings, bringing a feeling of the times.Extensive appendixes include original letters. Some, accounting for government equipment, seem a bit superfluous, but they do flavor the history and at least show that government bureaucrats have not changed much in the last 140 years. ...
