Product Description
In our hectic times, the search for love is often reduced to a joyless exercise, a desperate manhunt, or a cold and insensitive game. As many of us have learned the hard way, these callous approaches can leave us in a rut of negative beliefs, unfulfilled needs, and blame. In trying to be someone we think will be "attractive," we lose sight of who we truly are and how to find the healthy and sustaining relationship that awaits us.

Meditation coach Kathy Freston has been through that vicious cycle herself - and finally broke free. In this insightful and inspiring book she illuminates the path to greater self-awareness - and the real love we all crave. Rooted in Eastern philosophy, A Course in Miracles, and down-to-earth spirituality, Expect a Miracle is a new kind of guide to the search for a great relationship - one that puts the focus back where it belongs: on our own transformation.

Product Description
This collection of essays, originally written as blogs on her own site, details Ashton's insight and mishaps on her journey to thirty. She questions everything from love to singledom, friends and family, even Neanderthals and religion, as she searches for love and spiritual enlightenment in all the wrong places.

READING EXCERPT:

My life is an open book. Literally, considering you’re reading this. I write blogs. This doesn’t make me special or cool. Everyone writes blogs nowadays. But several years ago, 2004 to be exact, it was the wave of the future for all of us quick-flapping jibber jabberers who longed to have a voice in this world, even if no one was listening. Luckily, people’s ears perked up when I started spewing my personal relationship sagas and conducting random informal inquests into life, love and the pursuit of men, who more often than not, turned out to be losers. And so I wrote. You responded, and I wrote some more. Hey, someone’s gotta make an ass of themselves in order to be a martyr for the betterment of mankind. Might as well be me.

On my journey to turning thirty, I had a lot of questions and I longed for something more. I was seemingly lost, like most of us are in our late twenties. The sheen of youth begins to fade, our bar-hopping party days come to a screeching halt (mostly because responsibility kicks in, and partly because all of our trusted party companions begin committing and spawning) and if we find ourselves single, we begin to look within for both wisdom and critique.Mostly critique, but who’s counting?

I, personally, am on a constant learning curve. My life is a work in progress, to say the least. This book begins with my divorce and introduces you to The Life of Jen through brief essays, commentary and contemplative thoughts written during the next three years as I balanced motherhood, men, ego and coming to terms with the ridiculous world around me. You will journey through my pain, cynicism, insecurities, humor and heart as I attempt to grow into a woman; reluctantly, if I may add, as I have always possessed a bit of penis envy.

My opinions are not always popular, my outlook on life is not always positive, and there is nothing orthodox about the way I travel my path. However, I do vow to learn from my mistakes, love those dear to me, and...

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 EMOTIONS IN ONE DAY
I don't advise this book before bed !!!!Normally I can read a book before bed and fall asleep after a few pages BUT not this book... I was literally captivated by the collections of blogs and short stories about Jen Ashton's life.I couldn't put it down and yes finished it in one sitting.. well laying down.So needless to say it was a late night.

This collection is very well written, it's entertaining and funny and had me giggling - reminding me of some of my experiences of the journey to 30.

I found it inspirational and have already decided that one day very soon I am going to go and buy some balloons, attach some affirmations to them and set them into the atmosphere. You will understand after reading it :)

I cried when she wrote about her relationship with her ex husband and family. This book had me laughing one minute and sniffling the next.I am already anticipating the next book of her adventures.

This book is a great read !Two thumbs up!There is something that everyone can relate to in this book male or female.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever, Witty, and Inspiring
Okay, I just spent the last two hours completely absorbed in this wonderfully written, observant, and hilarious book. Very, very entertaining. You are a lot of writer, Ms. Ashton.

The secret is out! It’s your turn to become the kind of woman men can’t resist and other women want to emulate.

READING SAMPLE:

* Who says you have to wait for a man to buy you a Valentine’s Day gift? It is lovely to buy yourself a box of chocolates or sexy lingerie to celebrate. You are, after all, involved in one of the greatest love affairs of your life… the one with yourself.

* Goddesses, treat your relationships as you would a business by considering your R.O. I (return on investment). If you are constantly throwing out brick-sized effort for your amore and are only getting back pebbles in return, you are not being respected! You should get back what you give. Anything less is beneath you and unworthy. After all, if he was your employee, and was consistently operating at 30%, you would fire him in a second. Now, why are you keeping him around?

* Let’s face it, bad boys are attractive: they’re masculine, red-blooded, non-conformists that are most likely excellent in bed. Their bravado keeps us on our toes, and provides an element of excitement. Yet, we try to land them, tame them, and change them; inevitably getting angry when they behave in the manner that attracted us to them in the first place. Please remember, bad boys rarely change their spots. Proceed with caution. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book! Changed my life...
I would like to thank Gary Null for getting this book out to the public. It's helped me get back my health. I'm 54 and could hardly walk a 100 feet before starting these exercises. I'm walking 3 miles daily now and have lost 70 pounds and I owe it to Gary's advice from this book. The book breaks down each exercise routine into east to follow steps and gives plenty of great info about diet. I would also like to point out a rather suspicious review from Publishers Weekly. This review slams this book and I really don't know why. The complaint seems to be too much information for advanced runners. Well if you're an advanced runner any book for beginners to advanced will have info in it that's covering what you already know. I believe this is just another establishment crony looking to take a shot at a leader in the alternative medicine and holistic health field. Thanks again Gary

Product Description
Around here, we call it The Project.Outside the offices of Big Sky Journal, it is called "a magazine."But wht it is, really, is a collection of voices, a choir of the uncommon, trying to define itself through a place that is larger than any of us.The magazine is a convenient package of delivery, a reflector, providing the best of the place in the form of essay, image, art and fiction.A lot of good stuff blows through this joint, and some of it sticks between the covers. What we have here is the nearly impossible reduction of several years and several thousand pages into a lucid collection of those voices. The idea for Big Sky Journal crossed my mind several years before I was able to escape the demands of an existing career to move the concept toward reality.By 1992, I was able to ask David McCumber, then the talented editor of a Santa Barbara newspaper, if he would help give the magazine its launch. With the confused excitement of a new project, Big Sky Journal punched a hole in the sky, bound for who knows where. For the past few years, the magazine has enjoyed the award-winning editorship of Allen Jones, in whose hands the reigns still lay.Without such hands, there would be, as they say, no ink, no paper. And no anthology.Pleasantly, we have found that there are still a surprising number of serious readers at large.Just when we might think the entire planet has abandoned the printed word for the sirens of the internet and video store, Big Sky Journal continues to grow and evolve. So what is this collection about? To some measure, each of us has that somewhat odd impulse to try and save the unsavable, to freeze the moment: the prom photo; the yearbook; the Christmas video. Some people collect stamps, we collect stories.... But unlike some collectors, we think we might have an idea why we collect these essays, articles and fiction pieces: they make us feel happy and smart and put us in touch with a place that interests us.They make us respond in a way we can trust.Wallace Stegner said it best: "....the smell of distance....the largeness and clarity take the scales from my eyes, and I respond as unthinkingly as a salmon that swims past a rivermouth and tastes the waters of its birth." Describing the moment and making it happen are two different things. The pieces in this collection are easy to read. They are hard to write.Ask the best of them: there is nothing automatic about a well-focussed piece of writing, especially when one is wrestling with a subject as vast as the West. It`s had to get your arms around it.Describing his short story Big Two-Hearted River in a 1924 letter to Edward O`Brien, even Hemingway admitted the difficulty in delivering a place to the reader."What I`ve been doing is trying to do country so you don`t remember the words after you read it but actually have Country. It is hard because to do it you have to see the country all complete all the time you write and not just have a romantic feeling about it." If we have done our job, you will have Country, and, even if it`s only for a moment, we will have saved something. To those writers who have so bravely given us their personal reflection of this amazing place, we offer humble thanks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Selections from a literary Field and Stream
"Big Sky Journal," based in Bozeman, Montana, is for the most part a celebration of the great outdoors, a kind of literary Field and Stream. This "treasury" of articles from the journal features a fair number of accounts of fishing and hunting, but if that's not your interest, there's more here to choose from. I particularly enjoyed Kim Zupan's reminiscences of riding in punkin roller rodeos, Ralph Beer's humorous essay on restoring a 1930s Montana State Highway Department snowplow, and Fred Haefele's mini-memoir of working as a timber faller. Laugh-out-loud hilarious is Jon Jackson's account of a 1972 cross-country trip with Raymond Carver in what turns out to be a stolen car.

A section on rivers includes Annick Smith's appreciation of the Big Blackfoot, the centerpiece of Norman Mclean's much-loved "A River Runs Through It." Rick Bass captures that self-effacing, wonky pride of long-time Montana residents in his essay about a rain-soaked fishing trip on the Yaak River. John Barsness describes an archaeological dig along the Missouri River, unearthing the site of a fort that burned down in 1844.

The spirit of Edward Abbey also infuses the pages of this book. Doug Peacock (inspiration for the Monkey Wrench Gang's Hayduke) has a fishing essay, and Ralph Beer writes an "apology" for being once angered by Abbey's famous diatribe against ranching. I happily recommend this book for lovers of the outdoors and good writing and to anyone whose imagination is inspired by the mountains, prairies, and rivers of Big Sky country.

it's funny to learn in-line skating by this book.I prefer everyone to buy this. I love skating,I love AMAZON

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled - it's actually a cartoon book!
Yes, that's right. I was completely fooled. This books is just a bunch of cartoons, written with text. Very unprofessional. Very uninformative. Too childish! Nothing you would want. I'm shocked it's on the market. If this piece of dung can get published, then we all have a chance with our own mindless doodles.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for beginner
This book is easy to read and the writer give a good number of useful tips.

As a beinnger who has just skatea fwtimes, this book allows me to know more about skating andsome of the movements.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nowhere Near Complete -- Even For Beginners
Let's start with the cover of the book."Basic and advanced techniques" it says.Really?Crossing one skate over the other and jumping in place are about as advanced as this book gets.

For thecomplete beginner, this can be a handy book.If you've never set foot onskates, or can't figure out how to stop, this book can help.If you'd liketo read a brief history of in-line skating, this book can help.If you'reinterested in skating purely for physical fitness, this book can help.

If, on the other hand, you're interested in learning more than how tostop, go, turn and skate backwards (though I find this instructions forskating backwards to be lacking) then keep looking, you won't find any"advanced" information here.

All in all, this book toucheslightly on a variety of beginner's topics, but fails to keep its promises, especially to those looking to get more in-depth. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is just ok
I grew up with dogs, and bought this book because I had never raised a puppy on my own before. The book made a couple good points, but overall was a waste of money.Maybe this book would be better for someone with absolutely no dog experience.I'd say that if things in the book conflict with your instincts, go with your instincts.Certainly don't take this book to be doggie gospel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Puppy Preschool
Although I have raised seven dogs over the past thirty years, this book had great lessons and reminders. After reading the book, I realize why some of our past pets had problems as adult dogs. The tips show how to develop a dog that will become a great addition to the family!

5-0 out of 5 stars My dog has impeccable manners!
I have one of the best behaved dogs I have ever met and I owe much of that to this book.My brother suggested this book when I bought my labradoodle 3 years ago.I read it cover to cover the day I brought her home and tried to follow it as closely as I could.I had a little trouble getting myself to "growl" at her as I was living in a busy apartment complex at the time but I used a stern "bad dog" which worked for me.One of the best things I learned from this book was how to acclimate my new pup to her crate which was key! Before long, she knew that when I brushed my teeth in the morning it was time for her to go to her crate.I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about getting a dog.It has so much great information!!!I'm so thankful I read it because I truly do have a great dog!

5-0 out of 5 stars Puppy Preschool
This book is a must for anyone who wants a puppy but has little or no experience on how to select the proper puppy. The book also helps people understand canine traits and how puppies think and learn. It really helps you understand puppies and dogs from a canine vantage point.

4-0 out of 5 stars About what a scout manual would have.
Very Basic. Not bad, but not great. Considering this book is for my children the very basic information contained in it is appropriate for someone just starting out in Wilderness Fieldcraft, Survival, or Bushcraft as the Euro's seem to like to call it. Both of Ray's books that I ordered for my boys have sparked their interest. So I gave it four stars for this reason. The writing style is clean and to the point. Easy for young teens to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book was awsome
the illustrations and the info in the book is very accurate i love to be outdoors and i have spent about 10-20 nights a month in the outdoors and often i do that with minimal gear and not much for the fancy items this book is going to be in my pack from now on and it will be a valued item
the book was great thanks

3-0 out of 5 stars The Outdoor Survival Handbook
The subtitle of this book is: a guide to the resources and materials available in the wild and how to use them for food, shelter, warmth, and navigation. The author has parceled out his observations, instruction and advise according to the four seasons. So rather than having a single chapter on types of shelter which one could locate or construct in the wilderness within the various climates or seasons, he parcels out this information over the four main chapters of the book. He does this for each category of survival: shelter, fire, water, cordage, and food. His intention seems to be that the reader use the book as an introductory survival course beginning in the spring, focusing on the particular type of shelter shown in that chapter and not getting distracted by other types that either cannot or need not be built then.

There is some sense to this kind of organization, but yet he leaves any discussion of hygiene or cooking, for example, until the summer chapter, when surely this information would have been just as relevant to the spring. If you have to at least selectively read ahead anyway to be better informed, why not just organize the book from the start so that the categories of survival occur as separate chapters, with the special circumstances of each season being discussed within the category, rather than breaking the content of the category across the four seasons? But the organization according to seasons allows the author to focus upon nature as it lives in each season, which seems to be as important to him as the types of shelter or the various methods of starting a fire.

The book is well illustrated and feels quite accessible. There is quite a bit of useful information on tinder and laying out fuel for a fire, even though it doesn't all occur, as it logically should, in a single chapter; and there is much, also, on cordage, but again, not all in one place. Because of the large and clear illustrations, it seems a good enough first book on wilderness survival. It does not overwhelm the reader with detail, but for some readers it is that very complexity of detail and a more rigorous organization that would be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy pocketguide
An excellent and handy pocketguide to survival, Ray Mears puts his knowledge in this book and it shows. The info is at hand, practical and easy to read.

Remember the old question, what book would you take with you to a deserted island?

Well... this is the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good all around book
First, this book is not about wildnerness survival. The recipes that include garlic and butter are well, not practical if your lost in the woods. The book is more geared towards going into the wilderness with everything you need at your disposal, and not lacking the essentials. The information is well presented, and does not deal with emergencies but rather going out into the woods and enjoying yourself.

The book is more about developing a spiritual relationship with wildnerness and emergency wildernesss survival is a matter of life and death, and not a romantic experience where you walk out having touched the hand of God. If you live, you will probably find God. I bought this book for the sole purpose of learning about survival in the wilderness. I found alot of very useful information, but, having a pretty solid base already, the book is still a fun read.

The sections on cordage are very well done, and the sections on pottery, skinning are also well done. I think if you want to have a rewarding wilderness experience without the dangers of being lost, this book is awesome. If your looking for what to do in case your lost, this might not cover all the bases.

Still a nice book that I frequently thumb through while sitting in the bathroom. ... Read more

Product Description

Treats, Play, Love is the collected wisdom of Patricia G. Burnham, the author of the highly successful Playtraining Your Dog, which has been in print for more than twenty-five years. Now, after fifty years in the business, she brings to this new book a focus on food training your dog with small treats, while still incorporating fun and games into teaching basic and advanced obedience. Burnham uses no compulsive training or punishment for incorrect or unwanted behaviors (such as barking, biting, urinating inside, or begging), but rather offers rewards for correct behavior, thus reinforcing it.

      Topics covered include:

·         Basic obedience training for puppies (exercises for sit, down, heel, and stay)

·         House manners for older puppies and adult dogs (no whining or barking)

·         Recipes for tasty dog treats that your four-legged friend will do anything for

·         Understanding your dog’s personality

·         Preventing dog bites

·         Dealing with shy or fearful dogs

·         Advice and exercises for training and showing a dog in obedience trials in novice class, open class, and utility class

·         Reflections on the end of your dog’s life

There are more than 100 photos and line drawings throughout the book to illustrate movements and exercises, and for owners who want to show their dogs, there are detailed descriptions of what they can expect once they enter the ring.

Although Burnham works almost exclusively with greyhounds (which are notoriously difficult to train), her wisdom and expertise apply to all breeds, and her warmth, sound advice, and personal tone make Treats, Play, Love a joy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dog training book
Patricia Gail Burnham loves dogs and KNOWS how to train them in a loving fashion. Her first book, "Playtraining Your Dog", was excellent, and this book adds new methods from her experiences. Her methods work!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good info BUT it's All about her Greyhounds
There is good info in here but it is overshadowed by the author's ego. Once again, as another reviewer stated, it's all about her greyhounds. And while we're at it, can we please find a training book that shows small dogs of different breeds that aren't necessarily the sharpest pencils in the box? A book that doesn't list the author's own dogs' championship titles not only throughout the book but in an appendix in the back of the book!?! A book that is written by an author who hasn't broken their arm patting themselves on the back? As a professional trainer, I can appreciate all that this author has accomplished in her life. But if you're going to write a book on dog training for the general public, please leave out the bragging. Most people don't know what all the letters and numbers after a dog's name means anyway. Nobody really cares. Write an autobiography if you have the need to toot your own horn and then publish it as such. The basic dog owner wants their dog to have good manners and understand and obey basic commands.

If you can get through the author's personal yada-yada-yada prevalent throughout, this book describes things well. There are better books out there that just describe the how-to's. And those books list the author's credentials on the intro pages which, in my opinion, is the only place that information belongs.

2-0 out of 5 stars I don't have a greyhound....
I was excited to read this book! All the other reviews are pretty good. But, I really couldn't stand it. First of all, the author seems to have her majority of dog training experience working with greyhounds, which I don't have. The photos in this book (black and white, some looking pretty outdated) are about 95%+ of greyhounds. Anyone with a greyhound might find this book helpful. She adds a lot of personal stories about her dogs, some of which contain useful information, and some of which added nothing and could have been left out. I feel that this book is geared more towards breeders and people who want to show their dogs. The author also seemed to use a lot of generalizations which I didn't like. I have a pit mix, and the only thing about pit bulls in this book is in the aggression section and she basically bashed pit bull owners and the dogs themselves, which I did not care for (Not that I feel she should have included a ton about pit bulls, but the rude comments added nothing and could have been left out). All in all, there were a few good tips in the book, but I regret buying it (even at the used paperback price) and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but greyhound owners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic view of positive training
I have read dozens of dog training/behavior books. This books adds insights the others didn't. The history of positive and demand/punishment training was interesting. I also thought her discussion about a dog's challenge to the owner was also needed and helpful. The book is about the power of positive training, but with a full understanding of demand/punishment training. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every dog owner should read this book
Dogs in the wild spend a majority of their day figuring out how to find food, Patricia Burnham points out. Thus, if a certain behavior produces food, a dog will naturally and happily do it again. If you produce food in response to playing what he thinks is game, he will think you are the greatest thing on earth and pay attention to you despite all sorts of distractions.Aversion training ("If you heel, I won't jerk on this choker collar") may have it's place, but not with my new puppy. It has the potential of creating a dog that does not enjoy working and learning with you.

I have trained dogs with correction in the past, but with a new puppy, I thought I'd at least read some of these "positive training" books.I am a complete convert!"The Power of Positive Training" has some great points as well and some step-by-step instruction.Instead of a clicker, I praise the dog and get the same response.

"Treats, Play, Love" is full of decades of experience, logical explanations for how different training methods work or not, and an historical prospective on training.Burnham also acknowledges when some forms of aversion training are appropriate and for which dogs it works.Pat Miller, in "The Power of Positive Training" seems more morally opposed to punishing dogs.I prefer someone who discussed all options.

If you have a dog, whether you are training for show or just to be a nice pet, whether you've trained a dog before or not, READ THIS BOOK. ... Read more
