2-0 out of 5 stars The TV Show Was Good, But the Bible Study is...
I love watching the "Andy Griffith Show."I watch it almostevery day.I've seen every episode and will continue to watch it, actuallyI've watched it all my life. Now and then I've used parts of episodes insermons as illustrations. But this Bible study on my cherished "Andyand Barney" is just not very good.It is much too inductive for meand I have had a hard time connecting the Scripture texts to the episodes. They did not fit into the context of the show and the show did not fit thecontext of the Scriptures.I understand the desire to "bridge"the Bible with the world.I am a rather inductivepreacher as well.Butthere is little meat here in these studies and I am sorry we invested ourtime and money in them. But the show is wonderful!

1-0 out of 5 stars Nip it!
The whole concept of using a TV show as the foundation of a Bible study is so ludicrous that it should need no criticism, but then again, the American religious melting pot has also spawned a whole family of "Christiankitsch": Jesus ashtrays (I kid you not!), breath mints with Biblereferences, "armor of God" playsets, and on and on...So, I guessit comes as no surprise that someone would be able to market the idea ofteaching a Bible lesson with a TV show as the "text." Because somany churches have abandoned the Word of God as their foundation (rememberthe Reformation cry of "Sola Scriptura"? these guys apparentlydon't) they go to broken cisterns that hold no water. Unable to chew onsound doctrine, they sip at sewers. Unwilling to study the Bible, theysubstitute TV shows as their text. The whole Andy Griffith Show Bible StudySeries (which includes an Aunt Bee Cookbook if you order the package--a $10value absolutely free! But wait, there's more...) is merely a patheticdisplay of the "entertain me" mentality of the American church. The studies (and I use that word loosely) entail watching an episode ofAndy, then extracting the moral point of the show, and slapping on anyScripture that seems remotely relevant, while ignoring context, theoriginal audience to whom the text was addressed, and the primacy ofScripture. To start with a TV show as your lesson base and then find anyScripture that seems to allude to the show's theme quickly leads to chaos. Here is an example: In the lesson plan based on "Barney Fife,Realtor," the texts come from Matthew 6:25-27, 1 Peter 4:14, Col 3:15,John 7:24, 2 Cor 10:7, Luke 8:15, and so on. Scripture is quickly reducedto a "hey, this verse might fit this point" adjunct.

Lest youthink I am opposed to creative teaching, let me clarify something: Jesusused many parables, and the Bible is full of fascinating historicalaccounts that yield a wealth of teaching material. Illustrations areappropriate and very helpful in sermons. But these examples all share onething that the Andy Bible Study series does not: they start with the Bibleas their source. They take a Bible text as their source. A good sermonseeks to illuminate the text in terms of its context, the original audiencewho read the text, and the place of the text in the whole of Scripture. Butthe primary goal of any sermon should be to exalt Jesus as God, Savior, andLord. The Andy series consistently exalts moral principles (which is good)without a Christ centered focus (which is bad.) Beyond that, there is noattempt in these lessons to impart the basic doctrines of Christianity. Asa matter of fact, see how many lessons omit any reference to sin, justification, sanctification...and if you aren't amazed, you are theperfect customer for this counterfeit catechism. If you like this book, you'll love "Poor Richard's Almanack": after all, God helps thosewho help themselves, right? ... Read more

Filled with warmth and wisdom of American icon, Andy Griffith, Bound for the Promised Land takes the reader on a journey through beloved hymns. Sometimes we are the "Wayfaring Stranger" in our journey, clinging to the "Whispering Hope" we find in our Lord. Other times we're boldly "Marching to Zion," basking in the "Sweet Hour of Prayer," or reflecting tenderly on our "Precious Memories." 5-0 out of 5 stars "I think it is one of the most unique shows in all of television"---Ron Howard
This a very unique book on a unique show.It is not the usual Ken Beck and Jim Clark quote book with quotes taken directly from the show or text describing the characters or episodes. The text briefly describes each season and the rest of the book is filled with photos and quotes from the actors (many bit players), writers, producers, etc.The quotes range from talking about certain actors or scenes to behind-the-scenes tidbits and general feelings about The Andy Griffith Show.It reads like a scrapbook. Many of the photos I have not seen in any other TAGS book. There are a lot of behind-the-scenes photos. Some of my favorites show the cameramen, lights, and equipment as scenes were being filmed. There is also a cool aerial shot of the set of the Forty Acres lot in Culver City that was used for downtown Mayberry (p. 44).I also like the photos of TAGS memorabilia (TV Guide and comic book covers). The photos start with early publicity and scene shots from the pilot episode on The Danny Thomas Show and go on through all 8 seasons of TAGS, ending with photos and quotes on the spin-offs Gomer Pyle USMC, Mayberry RFD, and the 1986 reunion Return to Mayberry. Many people are quoted, but some of them include producer Sheldon Leonard, assistant producer Ronald Jacobs, music director Earl Hagen, Rance Howard, writer Jack Elinson, producer Aaron Ruben, Elinor Donahue, Margaret Kerry-Wilcox (played Bess Muggins and Helen Scobey), Joy Ellison (played Mary Wiggins, Opie's choice for Miss Mayberry), members of The Country Boys, Kit McNear (Howard McNear's son), James Best, Renee Aubry (choir member), Don Knotts, Julie Adams and Sue Ane Langdon (both nurse Mary Simpson), writer Harvey Bullock, Keith Thibodeaux (Johnny Paul), Jim Nabors, Jack Prince (Rafe Hollister), members of The Dillards (The Darlings) Mitch Jayne, Dean Webb, Rodney Dillard, Doug Dillard, their on-screen sister Maggie Peterson (Charlene), Bernard Fox (Malcolm Merriweather), Howard Morris (director as well as Ernest T Bass), director Earl Bellamy, Ron Howard, Clint Howard (Leon), Mary Grace Canfield (Mary Grace Gossage), George Lindsey, Betty Lynn, Hal Smith (on riding a cow), George Spence who was Frank the boyfriend in "Guest in the House" (there is an entire page on his memories of the show), Dennis Rush (played one of Opies pals, Howie Pruitt/Williams), Ruta Lee, Jack Dodson, Ken Berry, Paul Hartman's grandson Bill (one of my favorite quotes. He talks about how fans sent his grandfather Emmett radios and toasters to fix), Jack Dodson's widow Mary, associate producer Richard O. Linke, Arlene Gonlonka (Millie). Not an exhaustive list, but you get the idea. The quotes are all very positive. No bitterness in Mayberry.

My only qualm about the book is the lack of coverage of one of my favorite, and greatly unappreciated, characters Warren Ferguson. No Jack Burns quotes, I guess that is understandable. But beneath one of only three photos of him is the sarcastic caption: "Andy hires Floyd's nephew Warren Ferguson as Mayberry's new deputy, `know what I mean, huh-huh-huh?' (Please don't get him or us started)."Not keeping with the Mayberry spirit, in my opinion.Oh well, you can't have it all, I guess. The book ends with a very useful episode guide that includes a synopsis of each episode (some even include some extra tidbits or trivia) and guest characters with cast credits. It is an excellent addition to any TAGS fan's collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty fascinating book...
Lots of good pictures and stories behind the filming of the show. If you are a fan of Andy Griffith, you can't go wrong with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of all Mayberry books!!
I've never seen such a great Mayberry book before!! It has many wonderful pictures, and tons of great history. I read this straight for around 3-4 hours, and it has great memories or the actors reminiscing... Ah, well, it's worth buying for the price, this book is worth it!! Very high quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK!
I recently bought this book for my grandparents. It was such a joy to sit and watch them remember back on all the episodes they had watched. If you were a fan of the Andy Grifith show this is a must buy for you

5-0 out of 5 stars Mayberry Memories
An excellent book and well put together. You will find amazing photographs of all the characters in the cast...and then some. One of the most interesting photos, in this book, is one of an ariel view of the Mayberry Town near Culver City, California. An actual town within a town.

I have read other books and also found them interesting with regard to the Andy Griffith show, but it was great to see all the pictures and read the personal comments of the stars and the people behind the scenes.

I believe that anyone , like myself, who really loved the show will enjoy this a great deal. Well done. This was one of my all time favorites shows and this book shows a lot of the people who made it such a great series. ... Read more

Product Description
Out of tragedy, a hero is born! In the roaring heart of the crucible, steel is made. In the raging flame of personal tragedy, men are sometimes forged into something more than human. Wealthy and successful at an early age, Richard Benson was preparing to enjoy a long and happy life with his family when crime took away his wife and young daughter. Once he was just a man, but now he is a machine of vengeance dedicated to the extermination of all crime. A figure of ice and steel, but more pitiless than both, Benson has become a symbol to crooks and killers--a terrible, almost impersonal force, masking cold genius and a nearly supernatural power behind a face as white and still as a dead man's mask. Only pale eyes, like ice in a polar dawn, hint at what awaits criminals when they invoke the rage of millionaire adventurer Richard Benson - The Avenger! Now, for the first time in over 30 years, the fearless/expressionless crime fighter; the man with the moldable face, the man with the shock white hair and the pale grey eyes, is back in action in a stunning collection of stories featuring all the action, adventure, and revenge Avenger fans have come to expect! From noir adventure and two-fisted action, to emotional tales of inner demons, join The Avenger for the E-ticket thrill ride of your life! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Avenger Continues
A good read.Stays close to the characters.I was confused once with Cole Wilson and a grey-faced Avenger but a later short story seemed to explain that.Recommended to all Averger fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Return of a Pulp/Paperback Favorite
The Avenger Chronicles is a great read. It serves up short tales by writers with an obvious knowledge and affection for the classic but short-lived pulp and paperback revival character.

Richard Henry Benson and the Justice Inc. crew are memorable characters, and I look forward to further volumes from Moonstone.

Hopefully, future collections will feature longer individual adventures, as the main drawback to the book is the short length of the stories, leading to a rushed feeling and a sense of incompleteness in a number of cases.
Several tales held the potential to be fleshed out to 'pulp novel' length of 40-60 thousand words.

I'd rather see quality novellas rather than a large quantity of short stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars good ole pulp fiction
these authors pick up where the books left off...the stories are a great short reading for books that are -sad to say-out of print...if you like The Shadow or Doc Savage then you'll like these stories...

4-0 out of 5 stars The Avenger Returns
How awesome is this! The return of the Avenger!

I have been waiting for decades for someone to return the Avenger to print.I've begged, urged, flooded groups, written fan stories, even plotted books, comics, and movies, and all for nought from the corporations until this very cool volume arrived. What a dream come true.

The Avenger is one of the best pulp heroes ever, and stands shoulder to shoulder with Doc Savage. He well deserves to be revived and have some new adventures.

Job well done.Now.... I want some more.Volume Two anyone?

4-0 out of 5 stars The Avenger Chronicles
