Michael Keddington and Faye Murrow are young lovers who marry on the eve of Faye's departure for medical school. While the bonds of matrimony and faith pull them together, the troubles of the real world do sunder: disapproving parents, work demands, distance, death, and an unplanned pregnancy. As in his earlier novel, The Christmas Box, nostalgia and emotion run unchecked, to the delight of most readers.

Great Book
The book is great.It arrived in great condition and a very timely manner.Great job.

A Lovely Book
I have had this book around for awhile.I had read "The Christmas Box" years ago from this author and that is why I picked this book out at a used book sale.It just didn't grab me for some reason - in fact I thought it was a book of devotionals or something like that - it must have been the way the book is packaged - not standard size and being a used book, it didn't have a dust jacket.I finally picked it up to read casually and was eventually absorbed into the story.I loved the quotes from Michael Keddington's Journal at the beginning of each chapter.The ending was quick without much dialogue but at least it was a happy ending.I felt peaceful after reading the book.

Predictable
If I could give this book 1/2 star or no star, I would. The book is simplistic, predictable, and boring. Do not waste your money or time on this read.

SWWEEEEPP!!
Men with Brooms is a great movie to watch.I got it on Amazon for a fair price and it was delivered very quickly.Thank you.

Mildly entertaining rubbish really
We're great fans of Paul Gross who stars in this film.This was supposed to be clever and tongue in cheek comedy, but was pretty rubbishy really.The humour was far beneath Paul's other works (Due South, and Slings and Arrows, for example).The film was entertaining enough, but tepid.We didn't even really feel like we'd learned much about curling particularly, either.. but then we're Canadian already so what more is there to know?!We enjoy and "get" Canadian humour but this was definitely the shallow end of it.If you buy the video as part of a combined postage deal, great; if not, give it a miss.

Men With Brooms
This is a great movie about curling and relationships.I am not a curling fan; but I thought the filming of the curling action was exceptional.The movie was funny and very entertaining.I also loved the outtakes at the end of the film.

Fun and human, but don't look for anything too serious
I really like this movie, but I don't know if it's for everyone.It is a "sports" movie, but the sport is really a page upon which to draw the human drama.It's about realizing what is really important and being able to look yourself in the mirror... but I wouldn't watch it if that was all that it was.I am easily bored with drama, and don't want to waste my limited free time being upset about the problems of imaginary people.If I am going to watch a movie, I want to me ENTERTAINED.This movie paints the human aspects with broad strokes of the absurd, and unexpected moments of clarity.Beware that it has its fair share of bad language, and the quest for offspring leads to a number of scenes that people a generation older than me (Boomers +) would surely feel were in poor taste, but it is always done tongue-in-cheek with what I feel is an awareness of the overall hilarity of the human condition.To sum it all up, I'd say it was funny, and ... sweet.

Wedging towards oblivion
I read this book a few years ago and am just now getting around to writing a review. This is a very good overview of the Intelligent Design ( ID ) movement and the subterfuge used by various conservative Christian organizations to get the biblical creation story taught in public schools as a legitimate scientific theory. Reading this in conjunction with the Dover decision trial transcripts ( available at the ACLU website and other places ) will give you a very good education about the ID movement.

Rather than rehash the many good reviews posted here ( It's always good to read the 1 star and 5 starred reviews ), let me offer a couple of thoughts.

ID proponents want a fair hearing and claim that alternate views are not allowed to be taught. That is all well and good and our public school system often does this. For example, Newton's laws are taught in our public schools, even though we know they have been superseded by Einstein's laws. They work very well in the world we live in, so they are useful to know. But as the saying goes, 'show me the money'. Where is the evidence, even weak evidence, for creationism? If there was, it would be taught. It's not even a good enough theory to be wrong. Get a theory, get a research program, get some evidence, then we'll talk. Poking holes in existing theories is not a theory.

The ID people seem to have it backwards. People go into science because there is a tremendous sense of joy and satisfaction in figuring something out. Unexplained does not mean unexplainable or irreducibly complex. It just means someone has to work hard and figure it out. That is what science is all about. It's not about believing some dogma.

Many ID proponents cling to a 'false consciousness' notion. If only evolutionists weren't blinded by their own intransigent sinful natures ( the world, flesh, devil ), they would see the light and reconsider. I guess I had the opposite reaction when reading the book. It saddened me that so many people are apparently ignorant of all the wealth of evidence supporting evolution. The books are out there, but the will to read them is not.

The question of how we acquire 'knowledge' is a different question than how we 'justify' our knowledge. Humans, in fact, learn 'knowledge' from credible community authorities. It concerns me that we allow religious leaders to spread these beliefs as scientific truths in our community. How many people end up rejecting their traditions later in life when they realize they've been lied to or mindlessly support them because they will never have the privilege of critically engaging them? Are we well served as a society by allowing this to continue?

Do the ID leaders really have a contempt for the human ability to discover truth? Are they really lying for Jesus? To give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they have the false consciousness and are blinded by their beliefs?

Still as current as when it first was published.
I'd put off buying and reading this book for years, reasoning that it was published in 2004, and therefore out of date.I bought it only because a reader on another review referred to a scientist I'd never heard of, and "googling" his name brought up mainly references on creationist websites, and also a reference to him in "Creationism's Trojan Horse", which was the sole reason why I bought this book.

Actually, the book is just as up to date as when it was published, but only because Intelligent Design proponents are making exactly the same arguments that Young Earth Creationists such as Henry Morris were making 40 years ago.The only difference is that the current creationists have stripped out their brand of religion from their arguments (except when they are addressing their natural constituency of fundamentalist Christians).

A very enjoyable (if a book describing the nightmare scenario that the the financial supporters of ID appear to be wanting to impose on America can ever be described as "enjoyable") and engrossing book.

Well recommended.

Propoaganda
Like most propaganda, Barbara Forrest spreads grains of truth around in an attractive way, and then layers on emotional overtones to influence the audience. I saw her speak on this topic on a college campus. It is 100% extremely biased propaganda.

If you are atheist and want an echo chamber to hear your own thoughts reverberated back at you, then buy this book. Barbara Forrest is an atheist, and clearly has no interest in unbiased or objective scientific research, design, or methodology. Much like Richard Dawkins in that respect - they both have the capacity to do good work, but are driven by their atheistic bias to try and prove that God doesn't exist at the expense of morality and objectivity. They don't care about Truth - they do not want God to exist so that they can live their own (immoral) lives with impunity.

Barabara Forrest is in bed with the ACLU, and this is clear from her collaboration in the Dover Trial, where the judge pretty much just rubber stamped the ACLU's "brief" given to the judge. This book and her presentations based from this book have grains of truth twisted so far away from reality that it makes you wonder how this woman even has a clear understanding of what reality is anymore. She seems to be living in a fantasy world made up of her own biased and unfounded beliefs.

But then, don't we all? How then does one know the Truth? By reading it all with an open mind, and seeing how much real unbiased objectivity and foundation in real science is there. EVERYONE is biased. NO ONE can be completely unbiased. This woman takes bias to new and undiscovered levels, quite like Richard Dawkins - ridiculed by members of his own society for writing such a horribly biased and unscientific book as "The God Delusion".

TO that end, I recommend three books to the open-minded reader, and even to the atheists who think they have read it all and don't need to read anything more - let's just think outside the box of atheism and scientism for a moment here, shall we?

(1) Meyer - Signature in the Cell
(2) Behe - Edge of Evolution
(3) JC Sanford - Genetic Entropy

(1) DNA is (extremely) complex, (extremely) specified information. The only know source of CSI is intelligent agents (humans). Thus, the best explanation for the existence of DNA is an intelligent agent. Humans did not create DNA, and therefore some other intelligent agent did.

(2) You don't need to look at millions of years of evolution to see evolution at work. We have three very good models in existence today that we can study. Malaria, HIV, and the bacterial colony project. Eukaryote (has a cell with a nucleus), virus, and prokaryote (bacteria) life forms, respectively. All have very short generation times, and have produced huge numbers of progeny. Looking at what neoDarwinian evolutionary processes has completed in these three models demonstrates clearly that it is capable of VERY LITTLE. YES, it exists. But all it can do is break things. No generation of new information. No advancement by same. In short: microevolution occurs. Macroevolution does not. If random mutation is not responsible for the genetic change we see (and it obviously isn't) then non-random mutation must be. This points to an intelligent agent.

(3) Not only does DNA not have the capability to advance it's own evolution, but random mutation is actually causing genomes - specifically OUR genome - to degrade. This is made quite clear by examining what we know about population genetics - published in peer reviewed manuscripts. The human genome is not "evolving" in any meaningful way, and neither is the genome of any other organism. The math is really pretty clear, in some cases, and quite obtuse and highly theoretical in other cases (which of course the latter are the models that naturalists use). This points directly at the creation of life, not "evolution" of life. This points directly at the involvement of an intelligent agent, not only in our creation, but in the existence, and eventual end, of man. There is no way we can go on with the destruction that is occurring at the DNA level. What you hear naturalist spouting about DNA adapting and evolving is fairy tale - look at the field of population genetics, and read between the lines.

So, back on task, what Barbara Forrest tries to do is demonstrate the Discovery Institutes motivation to get "creationism" back into school with the "wedge strategy". This is, unfortunately, a true component. And this maneuver, with it's political and educational overtones, has been the focus of the propaganda machine since it was first presented. So has the fact that the Discovery Institute does not promote a given single intelligent designer. Their (the Discovery Institute's) biggest mistake was to have a partially hidden agenda (wedge). This backfired. What they should have done is used the Truth. God is the intelligent creator (vast majority of the Discovery Institute are Christians), the best evidence for a Creator is in the Bible, a good exegesis of the Bible harmonizes very well with what we see in nature, and an Intelligent Designer therefore must be God.

Barbara Forrest ignores the science, focuses on the propaganda surrounding the wedge strategy and the DI's lack of focus on who the Creator is.

The language makes my stomach hurt.
I started this book, and had to put it down. It made me feel, right from the beginning, like I was a child again, listening to my parents hurl insults at one another in the other room. I wanted to cover my ears and hide.
I was hoping for a reasonably scientific analysis of the evidence, or at least an accurate history of the debate. What I found was nothing more than a sort of propaganda pamphlet of personal attacks and party lines. I think I'll have to look elsewhere for open-minded investigation of the truth.

Combating "The Wedge"
In the last two decades a new strategy in combating the scientific theory of evolution has emerged in American conservative religious circles, "Intelligent Design" (ID). Wrapped in the language of science but without the scholar investigation on which science is founded, proponents of this theory seek to have it receive equal time with evolutionary theory in the schools and public institutions of the United States.

In "Creationism's Trojan Horse" historian Barbara Forrest and scientist Paul R. Gross seek to explore the political process that those engage in advancing intelligent design, which the author equate with the earlier creationism debate wrapped up in pseudo-scientific trappings. They expend considerable efforts to explain the "Wedge Strategy" employed by the ID community. This is essentially a political and social action plan prepared by the Discovery Institute in Seattle, Washington, an organization at the center of the ID movement, that describes an effort across abroad front to "reverse the stifling materialist world view and replace it with a science consonant with Christian and theistic convictions."

The Discovery Institute "wedge" approach, developed as a strategy by Phillip E. Johnson, mapped out an aggressive public relations campaign to put forward the virtues of ID. Well-funded in the extreme and not a little disingenuously, as the authors note, the effort to advance Intelligent Design has pressed for what they claim is a legitimate scientific debate over the virtues of ID in relation to evolution. They note that intellectual fairness requires that "equal time" be offered in the teaching/consideration of Intelligent Design. As Forrest and Gross note, this plays to an inherent sense of justice among most Americans, even as virtually everyone in the scientific world recognizes that there is no debate whatsoever over the merits of ID versus evolution. The forces advocating ID have made significant inroads through this approach and found success in arguing for inclusion of it in science curricula; including statements by President George W. Bush in August 2005 that said that both "theories" deserved to be taught "so people can understand what the debate is about."

But there is no debate, at least not among scientists. The authors document repeatedly that there is not one iota of support for Intelligent Design published in the scholarly literature. What exists, instead, is a well funded and highly focusedeffort to sow doubt among the general public about the merits of evolution and then political and legal campaigns to challenge the teaching of evolution in schools, museums, and myriad public institutions. It represents a nefarious plot to subvert science because it does not square with one narrow set of religious conceptions. I come out of a conservative religious tradition, one that I still embrace many vestiges of, but one which never staked a hardcore position on the age of the Earth. Absent that position, predicated on nothing more than a counting of generations in the Bible, there is room in the biblical account for evolutionary beliefs and for God.

This is a very important book on the political efforts at play since the 1990s to subvert evolution as a scientific explanation in biology. An important collection of lectures.
A broad but restrained look at various aspects of the irrationalist fad. The lectures put forward clear and calm arguments exposing the disturbing trends in academia that are hopefully losing popularity as their lack of substance is revealed. This was never meant to be a popular book, but for anyone with an interest or a stake in the pursuit of knowledge, or the standard of our education system, it is a useful reference.

A Critique of UnReason
To write a review of this book is actually to exercise the veryconstructivist principles which the Enlightenment bestowed on thehumanities.Most of what passes for criticism these days is sode-constructivist that one wonders exactly what qualitative judgement isbeing passed, and exactly on what subject.These are writings byacademics, and so what?They remind me of the early-Christian monks inIreland, transcribing the surviving wisdom of the ancients and periodicallyfleeing from barbarian hordes farther and farther West.Well, this is asfar West as we can go, folks.It's time to turn and face the barbarians. Unless you're one of those bored citizens who're looking forward to them,like the ones in Cavafy's "Waiting for the Barbarians."

Necessary work, but overly academic
As a history major, and someone who is fed up with post-modernist nonesense at the university, this book was a must-read for me.

I only have two concerns with this otherwise solid title.

1) The text is tooacademic -- how about a short, readable book for the masses?I propose aFAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) format that would enable students andothers to confront unargued post-modern dogma.

2) I would have loved anexamination of the historical roots of post-modernism and other forms ofirrationalism.For those who are interested, Wendy Kaminer's book'Sleeping with Extra-Terrestrials' is a good examination of Americanirrationalism.

A scholarly collection of papers
Those looking for some more (well deserved) bashing of the postmodernist academic left, such as that found in Gross and Levitt's previous book "Higher Superstition" may be disappointed. This book is acollection of papers delivered at a conference held under the auspices ofthe New York Academy of Sciences, organized by the authors. The papers varyboth in quality and in thrust depending on the author.

The book isdivided into 11 sections, each containing three to five papers that fitinto the general category. Categories include "The Public Image ofScience", "The Foundations of Physics", "Health","Environment", "Feminism", "Humanities","Religion" and "Education", among others.

It beingproceedings from a conference, few papers actually delve into particularexamples of bad science. Notable exceptions are "Building bridges toAfrocentrism" by Ann Macy Roth and "Whatever happened tohistorical evidence?" by Mary Lefkowitz, both of which containcriticisms of many afrocentrist claims regarding the egyptians, among ahandful of others. Other papers talk about the philosophical underpinningsof the postmodernist movement, or survey some of the literature, orencourage scientist to speak up in defense of science against the attacksby those championing the irrational. Many authors try not to get intodiscussions of validity in order to not be seen as "preaching to thechoir", which can leave the lay reader looking for more postmodernisthowlers feeling ill-served.

On the other hand, the articles contain awealth of information in the form of references, and mark trends both ofthe anti-science academic left and her critics. Not recommended tonon-scientist (read Gross and Levitt's other book instead), but those witha keen interest in the debates what what science "is" will findit an interesting and thought provoking read.

This collection provides a quite thorough overview of the postmodern attack on science and reason. Most of the authors demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the powers and limits of rationality andsuccessfully manage to expose the flaws in the postmodernist arguments.Well done. ...
