5-0 out of 5 stars Review of tape only.
Some areas of mathematics that have expanded dramatically due to increases in computing power are those where objects are being altered. Knot theory and hyperbolic geometry are two such areas and the ability to visualize the altering of the structure makes it much easier to understand what is going on. The emphasis in this tape is on what is not a knot, hence the title. The animations are still capable of stunning you, even though they were produced over ten years ago and it is possible to clearly follow the transformations of the figures as they are slowly deformed from one structure to another. The tape is an excellent introduction to geometry and topology, as students can see examples of the kinds of things that are done using mathematical transformations.
I studied hyperbolic space when the only tools were the equations and "crude" two-dimensional figures. Trying to visualize the structures was very hard, as it was almost necessary to have an out-of-body experience to truly see what the structures were. The animations on this tape make it so much easier to understand what is going on that it is now possible for people to understand hyperbolic geometry without understanding the mathematics. No doubt some people will watch it simply for the pleasure of seeing the different perspectives.
This is a tape that all math students should watch, even if they are not studying knots or geometry. It shows them aspects of mathematics that they may not have realized existed and at the very least will entertain them with some stunning graphics.

Excerpt: William Graham Claytor, Jr. (March 14, 1912May 14, 1994) was an American lawyer, naval officer, and railroad, transportation and defense administrator for the United States government, working under the administrations of three US presidents. He is remembered for his actions as the captain of a destroyer escort in World War II which helped to save 316 lives during the USS Indianapolis tragedy. Over 30 years later, Claytor's moderate actions on behalf of the rights of female and gay service personnel as Secretary of the Navy were considered progressive for the time. He is also credited with a distinguished transportation career, including ten years as president of the Southern Railway and 11 years as the head of Amtrak, guiding the passenger railroad through a particularly difficult period in its history. W. Graham Claytor Jr. was born in Roanoke, Virginia, and grew up in both Virginia and Philadelphia. He was he son of Gertrude Harris Boatwright Claytor, a lyric poet, and W. Graham Claytor (18861971), who was vice-president of Appalachian Power. Claytor graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1933. He then graduated from Harvard Law School summa cum laude in 1936. He then clerked for Learned Hand, Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He then moved to Washington D.C. to become law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Louis Brandeis before joining the prestigious Washington law firm Covington and Burling. In 1940, soon after the start of World War II, 28 year-old Claytor attempted to enlist, but was initially ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1532675 ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: David L. Gunn (born 21 June 1937) is a transportation system administrator who has headed several important railroads and transit systems in North America. Gunn was born in Boston to parents of Canadian ancestry whose families had emigrated to Massachusetts from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Gunn was educated at Phillips Academy in Andover and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Harvard College in 1959. He served in the United States Navy Reserve from 1959-1962. He received a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1964. Gunn has the following work experience: During his tenure as president of the NYCTA, Gunn instituted operational changes that led to the elimination of graffiti from the New York subway system. This was a development that led to a perception of increased safety and cleanliness, which resulted in the return of middle and upper class ridership and ensured the continued growth in mass-transit usage in the nation's largest city. Gunn has a philosophy called "state of good repair" where the first priority is to maintain infrastructure and equipment, making regular repairs where needed and retiring equipment from service at the end of its life-cycle. This brought him in frequent conflict with TTC chairman Howard Moscoe, who advocated the use of funds for improving TTC accessibility. Gunn's tenure at the TTC was also marked by changes in management structure, which were criticized by some (including his successor, Rick Ducharme, in a July 1999 Toronto Star article). He also argued against new subway construction. Toronto's only fatal subway train...http://booksllc.net/?id=2419136 ... Read more

Excerpt: Stanley James Hallett (19301998) was an American urban planner and specialist in urban community development who helped seed numerous innovative initiatives and organizations throughout his career. With the bulk of his professional work taking place in Chicago, Hallett began by working in church civil rights and later turned increasingly toward community economic and environmental sustainability. He and colleagues together created Chicago's Center for Neighborhood Technology, South Shore Bank (later ShoreBank), Northwestern University's Center for Urban Affairs and Policy Research and other institutions. During his career he worked alongside numerous activists, journalists and religious leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Saul Alinsky, George McGovern and Studs Terkel. One of the key concepts that Dr. Hallett would add to urban planning was the idea that there is an 'economy of neighborhoods,' Scott Bernstein, a Hallett disciple and co-founder of the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) in Chicago, told Chicago Enterprise magazine. Bernstein, who now heads CNT, said: "Most economists don't admit to an economy of cities, let alone neighborhoods. Stan saw neighborhoods as a place where money flows in and out." "What's clear to anybody who worked with Stan is that he was an immensely creative and original character," John P. Kretzmann told the Chicago Tribune in 1998. A senior researcher at the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University where Hallett was a visiting scholar, Kretzmann said, "It's so hard to categorize his work. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great, Thoughtful and Scary Zombie Fiction Collection
I have also just reviewed Best New Zombie Tales #1, which is a great book. This is another highly-engaging page-turner, thoughtfully assembled and nicely put together. There is great variety-- some stories are really short, and some are much longer-- and in each case, the author used just the right amount of words to hit the intended effect. The stories once again cover a wide range of literary styles and points of view. Many of the authors are well known and already have stellar reputations, but some were new to me and I think we'll be hearing more about them in the near future-- if we make that far . . .

As in the first volume, Best New Zombie Tales #2 also includes a really cool graphic (in the sense of comic-book) story, and other surprising goodies integrated into the overall book that make this far more interesting than your usual anthology.

Editor (and respected author) James Roy Daley's introduction is a fictional, zany zombie classic (and extended in-joke for genre fans) in its own right. It continues from Best New Zombie Tales #1, and hopefully will keep going in his introduction to the forthcoming Best New Zombie Tales #3.Get this book if you love zombies or even just great horror stories. It's awesome.

Here's looking to more books from Books of the Dead Press. I have a feeling that these books will become landmark volumes in the zombie/horror genre. ... Read more

Product Description
The unprecedented challenges faced by today's equity analysts demand innovation, but innovation does not necessarily require a complete overhaul of established methodology. In this proceedings, the authors show that, although the problems confronted by equity analysts may be as tricky as adjusting for cross-border accounting differences and determining the right valuation for internet companies that have no earnings, the solution may be as practical as modifying familiar methods to account for new circumstances. ...
