5-0 out of 5 stars Vol 2 - Architecture and Interior Design from the 19th Century to Present
06-23-08
Book Review
Pearson/Prentice Hall
ISBN 13-0-13-098538-5

What a joy is was to open Architecture and Interior Design from the 19th Century; An Integrated History, Volume 2.Once I looked at the Table of Contents, I knew I was in for serious studies of Design History, from the Industrial Revolution to the Present.
(Volume 1 covers the same material from the earliest cultural precedents to the 18th Century)

What I was not prepared for was the depth of information contained on each page. This is a truly important work and a "must have" for serious professional libraries.

Professors Buie Harwood, Bridget May and Curt Sherman have undertaken an enormous challenge and have outdone themselves, again.

Each Chapter offers a comprehensive review of the subject period, beginning with the Historic and Social climate of the times. Concepts are thoroughly outlined and the Design Characteristics explained and illustrated. Architecture is examined and highlighted with both Public and Private Buildings shown and noted with numerous details. Interiors, Furnishings and Decorative Arts are also examined with the kind of depth and insight that makes me want to visit or re-visit every site and museum listed.

Numerous important quotes are part of each chapter and offer glimpses of the impact of each design period in daily life. There are plenty of fine photographs, and many, many detailed illustrations. The Graphics and use of color are beautiful.

There are also wonderful examples and discussions of art, architecture, interior and exterior elements as well as comparative analysis with current designs. Each section also includes a listing of important Design Practitioners, Treatise, Buildings and Interiors as well as a Design Spotlight that highlights the key elements of each design period. References and Cross-references abound.

Timelines are also included for design periods as well as an interesting chronology of the evolution of the professions of Architecture and Interior Design.

At around a thousand pages (and a bonus CD), the depth of this volume is fabulous. Concurrent design styles are addressed fully with rich examples of signature elements and motifs covering a full page, in many cases. For example there are (12) twelve full pages on De Stijl alone and (22) Twenty-Two pages on the Chicago School with (77) seventy-seven photographs and numerous illustrations and plates. Environmental Modern is distilled to (36) thirty-six pages of wonderful photographs and rich descriptive text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on this topic available in marketplace!
This book is the most comprehensive and through book on architecture and interior design history available in the marketplace, starting with ancient periods and goes through periods of the 18th century. The book includes with each section a brief overview of the history of the times, architecture which includes drawings and photographs, interior design which includes motifs, color schemes and furnishings - furniture, fabrics and limited discussion of decorative accessories.Has a section of color plates, with each section included - color photos are not integrated into the other pages - UNFORTUNATE - but you can't have everything!!Very through coverage of all periods - certainly covers all at a certain depth - not complete - but it is a great resource if you have a limited amount of space for books and want to get the maximum bang for your buck.It is a costly book but to have all the information included in this one volume could cost much, much more. For interior design students and interior design professionals - this is a great book to have in your library - to keep!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price, condition & shipping on Textbook!
This seller went above & beyond to make the sale. It's refreshing to buy from someone who takes extra time, communicates & follows through. Thanks so much would purchase again!

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this Book
This book is "junk!" It explains statistics in such a way that it will get you more confused, if you are not already. I suggest you get this book, only, if you have a strong understanding of it. But if you don't understand statistic than I suggest you get something else to complement its complexity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book came quickly; good condition!
The book came about three days after I ordered it; was exactly as described. Great job. THANK YOU!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
When I learned that Amazon.com had everything I needed I started using it. Especially when going to school and the books are so expective I started ordering my books through Amazon.com and it's been great. For Example, Statistics for Psychology was a huge help for me in class. I paid a great price for it when book stores was asking for $150, with Amazon.com I saved so much money, and the book came on time and it was a great help to have in-front of me when doing my work. This book was very informative and explained everything step by step, I believe if it was not for this book I would have failed my class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
This book is very good and incorporate everything that you need to know about psychology. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Never got the book!
I wasn't able to track my book because there wasn't a tracking number provided. Amazon stated that some packages do not have a tracking#. I waited until a day after the delivery date to complain, (as I realize that this is a busy time of year for amazon and shipping companies) When at this time I was finally provided a tracking#. MIRACLE! Now that I had the tracking# I was able to find out that the delivery company attempted to deliver my package and left me a note (never got the note) stating that they attempted to deliver. I went over to the delivery service and they could not find my book, but they were for certain that it had not been returned to the shipper (per there computer). The same day that the delivery service told me this, I received an email from amazon stating that the book was returned. So now I've waited nearly 3 weeks for a book that I don't have, and behind in my class. If Amazon would have simply posted my tracking# as soon as possible I could have known what was going on. I'm also out the shipping charge that was charged to my cc. I will never attempt to order from amazon again!

2-0 out of 5 stars Economics Today: The Macro View
The material is fine--what I'd expect from a college textbook. I'm dissatisfied with how long it took to receive the book. My course was well within the third week before I finally received it, and I ordered it before the first day of class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great condition book
The book I ordered came to my college about 4 days after I ordered it. It was in better condition than the "good" condition that was listed. Satisfied with this product.
