Excerpt: David D'Or (Hebrew: ; born David Nehaisi on October 2, 1965) is an Israeli singer, composer, and songwriter. A countertenor with a vocal range of more than four octaves, he is a three-time winner of the Israeli "Singer of the Year" and "Best Vocal Performer" awards. He was also chosen to represent Israel in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest, at which he placed 11th in the semifinal. By February 2008, nine of his albums had gone platinum. D'Or, who has been referred to as "Israel's most acclaimed modern singer", and "who has taken the musical scene by storm", performs a wide variety of music, including pop, rock, dance, folk, klezmer, Yemenite prayers, holy music, ancient chants, classical, opera, and baroque arias (in the original Italian). D'Or was born in Holon, Israel. He is a descendant of Jews expelled from 15th Century Spain during the Spanish Inquisition. His great-grandfather was a prominent Libyan rabbi, and his father brought the family from Libya to Israel. When he was young, D'Or's parents encouraged him to become a lawyer or a doctor, but he simply loved to sing. When he reached the age at which his voice began to change, he worked to retain his ability to sing notes in a high range. To his surprise he was successful, and he then proceeded to develop his lower vocal range. For a while he was quite shy about singing using his high range, as it was unusual in Israelwhich he explains used to be "quite a machoistic countryfor someone to sing with such a high voice, and he had no one to imitate as no...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4634812 ... Chapters: Neville Staple, Terry Hall, Original Rude Boy, Lynval Golding. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 21. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Neville Staple (born Neville Euton Staple, 11 April 1955, Manchester, Jamaica) is a singer for the two-tone ska band, The Specials as well as his own combo, The Neville Staple Band. Along with Ranking Roger, he also sings in Special Beat. At the age of five, Neville left Jamaica to live in the English town of Rugby, Warwickshire but later moved to Coventry. He was initially active in the sound system scene forming his own crew called "Jah Baddis". Neville was a regular fixture at the Locarno ballroom in Coventry where he met its resident DJ, Pete Waterman. Pete was heavily involved in the seventies reggae scene before going on to become a major pop producer in the 1980s. Pete has written the foreword to Neville's biography - "Original Rude Boy" - and briefly managed The Specials. Neville's first involvement with The Specials was when they were still called The Coventry Automatics. He initially joined as their roadie but at a gig supporting The Clash, Neville took to the stage and never looked back. For a while, The Specials were managed by The Clash's manager Bernard Rhodes of whom Neville used to toast "Bernie Rhodes knows don't argue" at the beginning of the Specials hit single "Gangsters". Neville's vocal style is toasting or chanting over a rhythm. A forerunner of rapping which was brought to Britain in the 1960s by musicians from Jamaica. Neville honed his toasting skills on the sound system scene in Coventry during the 1970s. When he joined the Coventry Automatics, the line up already included Jerry Dammers, Horace Panter and Silverton Hutchinson on drums. Terry Hall subsequently came in as vocalist, replacing Tim Strickland, and Roddy...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=301705 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!
There are so many other good reviews that I don't really want to soend time writing another one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the movie
I loved the book, it was so much better than the movie. There are a few parts that are head on with the movie but I wish I would have read the book first. The book goes so far into detail to show you why these women are the way they are. i can't wait for the follow up book this September!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book whether you're black or white
I picked this up to read in a coffee shop while on vacation some years back, before the movie came out.I couldn't put it down, it was just so much fun.I happen to be a white female and wasn't particularly concerned with the color of the characters. There are a few storylines that are race-specific, such as Bernadine's upset that her husband has not only left her but has left her for a white woman, but by and large a lot of the experiences in the book are universally relatable. For instance, what woman hasn't experienced, like Savannah, getting all dressed up and heading out to a big party with high hopes, then getting hit on by undesirable men and heading home early?

The two "career woman" characters, Savannah and Robin, are drawn to contrast with each other. While they're both young, single and attractive, they're light-years apart in terms of personality.Robin compulsively buys sexy clothes out of catalogs even though bill collectors are hounding her to pay her credit cards, and gets breast enhancement; Savannah is much more of a level-headed career woman who pays her bills and her family's, collects art on layaway, and, upon seeing Robin's unnatural-looking breasts, decides she'd rather keep her own natural looking "miniatures". I would have liked to see a little more development of both of these characters because at times I felt they were really facing the same issues and problems, despite the author's obvious efforts to make them different from each other.I particularly couldn't understand Robin's dating an unattractive jerk who criticized her and would have liked to see Savannah maybe telling her to kick him to the curb, as I don't think Savannah would have put up with that. The other two characters are more concerned with domestic issues.Bernadine is going through a divorce from her rich husband, and Gloria is raising a teenage son all by herself.

The ups, downs, funny and sad times of each woman are deftly and humorously told, although I thought some aspects of the story were unrealistic. For instance, Gloria doesn't bother to look for a new man but just happens to have Mister Right move into her neighborhood.Bernadine commits acts during her divorce proceedings, such as destroying her husband's belongings, that would normally work against her in divorce proceedings, yet she still comes out the big financial winner in the divorce.

The author is determined to give all the characters a happy ending, which wraps up the book in a neat little package but detracts a bit from the true-life aspects of the earlier 3/4 of the book.Having said that, I think it's still a great book to read in terms of character development and just keeping four stories moving along.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just plain bad
When Waiting to Exhale was published, it was a book we needed. Tired of depictions of slavery, Jim Crow, and ghetto life, we wanted stories dealing with our newly found affluence. McMillan gave us a buddy novel that showed us in a different light.

Attempting to read this book now is painful. The story is still interesting but the execution is amateurish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Remembers REAL ROXANNE?
This book was really better than the movie version.

I was raised on watching that movie with my mother
and I was surprised how different the movie "Waiting to
Exhale" is from the movie.

There's another book I also just got done reading by
Jackie Christian called "Love Is the Drug" and the lead
character is REAL ROXANNE.She's a black girl and a movie
critic named after the famous rapper and that book is FIRE!
I loved reading that this weekend too.
