Product Description
Full Length, Comic Drama / 3m, 4f / Comb. Ints/Ext.Here is part one of Neil Simon's autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and Grandpa the Socialist and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states "if you didn't have a problem, you wouldn't be living here." "Brings a fresh glow to Broadway...In many respects his funniest, richest and consequently the most affecting of his plays."-New York Daily News "Simultaneously poignant and funny. The characters are fully dimensional, believable... An outstanding show...the best seen on Broadway in too long a time."-Variety "Hilarious comedy...His finest play...A delightful and enriching experience."-CBS-TV ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Play REading Group
This is one of the great plays of the mid-20th century.Everyone should read this treasure of comedy by Neil Simon.It is a comedy with great depth, relevant even now as we struggle with immigrants in America.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Depression tale that is not depressing
Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon takes place in NY during the depression but is not a depressing tale.The play is thoroughly enjoyable and Eugene's energetic personality will make you smile with his view of the not so happy things going on around him.It is also a very quick read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shipping
The book came in good condition, yet it took too long, I even did priority shipping and it still took about a week

5-0 out of 5 stars Brighton Beach
This play arrived practically brand new (even though I bought it "used") and was exactly what I needed at the time. I even got a great price for it. Yea!

3-0 out of 5 stars All In The Family
Fellow play readers say that this is one of the best plays they ever read. It made them weep, it changed their lives, it is the only the play they've ever loved. You can't argue with that. I have read this play several times myself, but for me it is a play that works but it does not work wonders. I am a great admirer of the Mel Brooks, Wood Allen, Neil Simon school of comedy. There should be a plaque on the Cross Bronx Highway alerting people that they are approaching the stomping grounds of America's greatest comedic generation. Of course, we know that it was the depression that incubated this batch of comedic geniuses. Simon, more so than the others, has mined this era, tapping his memories of love without any trace of irony or insight. His is one big sloppy family kiss on the forehead. Still his memories clearly are those of millions, and what seems corny and undramatic to one reader clearly has the power to bring others to tears. All the power to you, Mr. Simon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this Bible
This was the one thing my daughter really wanted for Christmas and she is very pleased. It is a very nice quality Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast service!Excellent bible!
I love this bible!I happened upon it accidently and decided to purchase it at a local Christian book store.A friend of mine saw it and fell in love with it also, so I gave it to her.I missed it so much that I had to buy another one for myself.

Although I am not a teenager, the fact that it has elements specifically geared toward teen girls makes this bible extra special and very fun to read.

The price and delivery were unbeatable!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Bible you wished you had growing up!
Let me say that I greatly appreciate the thought and energy spent to tailor a Bible to the needs and desires of teenage girls.

So often women in general are ignored or downplayed in Christianity. The Revolve Devotional Bible is a great way to show your daughter or loved one that women of faith are relevant, respected and recognized.

My only critique is the same critique I have with all contemporary English versions of the Bible. While I am all for reading the Bible in a language that is understandable and relevant, I also don't want us to lose the ability to quote scriptures and have it readily recognized.

I believe that one thing that unites all Christian faiths regardless of denomination or doctrine is the ability to recognize the Holy Scriptures when read or heard.

My only suggestion would be to make sure your teenager also has a copy of the KJV or NJV so that scripture memorization will be unifying and encouraging act. When she hears, "I can do all things through Christ...."
she should be able to say, "who strenghthens me." Not, (The Message version) "Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. I don't mean that your help didn't mean a lot to me--it did. It was a beautiful thing that you came alongside me in my troubles."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for your Teen
This is an awesome Bible for your Teenage daughter!I bought one three years ago for my oldest daughter who was at that time 13 years old and we attended the Revolve Tour for girls.She has loved it.She enjoys reading her Revolve Bible.My youngest daughter who is now about to turn 12 has been asking for a copy of the Revolve Bible for her Christmas or Birthday present.She said that she has looked at her sisters Bible and that "This is a Bible I can actually understand."

This Bible has inserts that help your teen identify with the scriptures and apply the scriptures to her life.She will learn what God thinks of her as a young woman and what God's plan is for us as Christians.

I believe your teenager as well as yourself as a parent will love the Revole Bible!FThis is the Bible every teenage girl should have.

Product Description

Dream House is a riveting debut novel that tells the story of a domestic drama that will forever change the lives of two families.

One terrible night. One outraged act. What price will people pay to hold their homes and dreams together?

When Kate and Stuart Kinzler buy a run-down, historic house in Ann Arbor, Michigan, they're looking for a decent remodeling investment and a little space in which to rekindle their troubled marriage. Instead they discover that their home was the scene of a terrible crime many years ago—a revelation that tips the balance of their precarious union.

When a mysterious man begins lurking around her yard, Kate—now alone—is forced to confront her home's dangerous past. Hers is not the only life that has crumbled under this roof. But the stranger who has returned to this house—once his own childhood home—is in search of something Kate may never fully understand.

Featuring a diverse cast of characters and building to an unforgettable climax, Dream House embraces the volatile issues of race and class to chart the concentric effects of one fateful decision—a moment of rage that will echo forever within these four walls.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I don't rate too many books with 5 stars.This novel deserves it. For a first novel, especially, I'm blown away.I don't think I've ever read a book where I could actually picture what the characters looked like--it's not something I do.But these people all seemed like people I should know, so they got faces in my imagination.Very realistic and contemporary and relevant.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mismarketed,not at ALL a "ghost story";think more early Sue Miller
I read a great review about this book, wrote down the title and purchased it a couple weeks later, thinking, "One day I'll be ready for a good ghost story."Even the lead quote on the hardback mentioned "ghost story."

Well, it's NOT at ALL a ghost story. What it is is a wonderfully written novel about a woman who purchases a house and begins to renovate it while her life fall apart around her.

That's all that "happens" -- again, no ghosts at all. No thrills. Just a wonderfully written but terribly mismarketed novel.

Highly recommended if you like writing like the early days of Sue Miller.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dream House? I don't think so.
This should have been written for some sob story magazine.It was trite and rediculous.I am sad to say that I bought this book after reading a good review.I don't think the reviewer ever read it.Save your money and if you want to read this kind of narrative, pick up a magazine like the Enquirer.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful character driven novel
This book drew me in from the start - with its creepy prologue. I love a mystery, but more than that, I love a good character driven novel and I definitely found that in Dream House. This is the sort of novel that slowly releases its secrets to you - keeping you at the edge of your seat and anxious to know what happened and why.

The main characters, Kate and Walker are both obsessed with this house. Kate - has always felt that she's been a disappointment to her family and feels that by immersing herself in fixing up her new home is a way to redeem herself in their eyes. Walker grew up in the same house before landing himself in jail for almost two decades. What was his purpose for returning?

There are various plot lines going on at once and they are all crucial to the outcome of this novel. The relationships Kate forges between Walker and Jay were really satisfying and essentially what I found the most interesting throughout the story. I love novels that blend past and present events and how it all comes together in the now and Ms. Laken definitely did this well.

For those of you looking for a ghost story - I think you will find one in Dream House, yet it's not a story about things that go bump in the night. This is a story of the ghosts of one's past, dealing with those ghosts and coming to terms with yourself, but most importantly it's about finding a place to call home.

I was very happy to have read Dream House and will definitely be on the lookout for any other titles from Valerie Laken.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
I got this book (hardback) at my library.The cover, the title and panel all made it up to be this "dark" novel full of mystery and thriller events.It was simply a novel.I see that the paperback cover now fits the lukewarm story better.The hardback I had sold it like a thriller.If you want to read a good ghost story try "No Doors, No Windows" by Joe Schreiber.Now that's a great thriller about a house and it's secrets.

While it was a decent story, it just was a story.One about how houses can hold meaning to people that are a part of it and it did connected characters nicely to tell it. But if you're looking for edge of your seat suspense then this is not the book for you.The ending was not "climactic".It was just a way to end the story and it let me down a little.Kind of like going to the ice cream shop for a chocolate malt and having to settle for a vanilla cone.You're craving for ice cream is fulfilled but you are still left wanting some chocolate.

It was a book about race and social classes?To me it was simply a book about a woman buying a house in a neighborhood that coincidentally used to house black families in 1987 nonetheless, not 1957.It wasn't some tale about white people taking over a black neighborhood.They were simply a young married couple starting out and buying a house to fix up that they could afford.The only character that even touches on the race issue is the black character.When the main character Kate meets him it's not that she's allowing a "black man" in her home, but a STRANGE man. She doesn't even interact with her white neighbors, but is outwardly open to the black man in the story so I'm still scratching my head over the whole "race" thing.I just didn't see it.

Product Description

A charming collection of original and often hilarious
insights into what puppies and young dogs really think

How do puppies see the world? One another? Us? I Am Puppy, Hear Me Yap offers honest, original, and often hilarious insights into how puppies and young dogs might answer these questions. From sleepy golden retriever pups to sophisticated poodles, personality shines through in each of Valerie Shaff's remarkable photographs. The images, accompanied by Blount's puppy poetry, with the "canine measure somewhere between ordered and free," make this book a delight for dog lovers and, until dogs learn to talk, the best way to understand the "inner puppy" in all of them.

Amazon.com Review
From the pugnacious pup on the cover to the sad-eyed sweetie hiding onthe back side, I Am Puppy, Hear Me Yap is a book guaranteed tomelt the heart of even the grimmest Cruella de Vil impersonator.Valerie Shaff's photography showcases our four-legged friends in many oftheir finest moments--chewing on slippers, rolling in the clover, andshaking the water off their fuzzy puppy fur are just a few of theclassics captured here. With the combination of close-up shots andgentle sepia-toned images, the unique details of each pup's face areshown to advantage. From sleepy newborn retrievers to sophisticatedpoodles, personality shines through in these portraits. You're sureto at least entertain the thought of inviting a new canine companioninto your life. The poetry of Roy Blount Jr. is the perfect companion to suchdelightful photos; in every case, the master wordsmith manages to sum upthe emotion in the picture in just a line or two, as in the photo of twosnuggling pups paired with
Each small sigh serves to reiterate
Nobody fits quite like a littermate
.

With pieces like that, it's clear that Blount enjoyed creating his rhymes as much as we enjoy reading them. The pintsized beast from the cover makes another appearance inside the pages, this time next to a poem that begins with the title of the book:

I am puppy, hear me yap
No, I won't sit in your lap
I've got other things to do
For instance, bark at you
.

Whether you prefer pooches sweet and cuddly or fiercely attacking your ankle, this lovely little book is sure to show you the doggie of your dreams. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ODE TO MAN'S BEST FRIEND

You can keep your new, gold Lexus;
Fancy cars just ain't my cup of tea.
Don't care about computer games;
These things don't appeal at all to me.

Some folks need the latest gadgets,
And have their homes filled with high-tech toys:
iPods and digital cameras,
Whatever makes electronic noise.

Now they've even got a cell phone
They can use to take a photograph,
But "He kept up with the Joneses"
Won't be written as my epitaph.

Because I know that Palm Pilots,
And expensive name brand tennis shoes,
Silk shirts and laptop computers,
Will never save a man from The Blues.

If happiness is what you seek,
It's really a simple equation:
Jettison computerized junk;
Get a Lab, Shepherd, or Dalmatian!

While some people dabble in fish,
Others try turtles, hamsters or mice.
Trust me and go with the canine -
You'll find yourself in Pet Paradise!

The Woman weeps watching Chick Flicks,
While late at night she cuddles her cat.
Reaching for tissues and chocolate,
She winds up dehydrated and fat.

But Men have the best idea
For getting their emotions to mend;
In the yard they'll romp 'n' rassle,
And play some Fetch with a "Man's Best Friend."

But suppose your yard is too small,
And constant barking makes your head ache.
I know how you can have your dog
Without yapping that keeps you awake.

Buy 'I AM PUPPY, HEAR ME YAP'
For you are bound to smile and to laugh.
The witty verse is by Roy Blount;
The great photos by Valerie Shaff.

All types of dogs will be found here;
Some noble, some filthy, some cleaner;
"The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly"
And one even looks like a wiener!

I've been so grateful for this book;
It makes owning a dog such a breeze!
There's no feeding and no walking,
And I don't miss a house full of fleas.

Happily there are no drawbacks,
But there's one thing the book can't replace:
When I have come home after work,
This publication can't lick my face.

Still, choosing it over a dog -
The decision for me wasn't hard;
I enjoy canine company
Without stepping in poop in my yard.

5-0 out of 5 stars I only wish there were more pages!
Rarely do people capture a puppy's playfulness, spunk, and strong personality with such clean elegance and coherence. There are no prissy, smoochy sayings and no sappy mushy talk (thank goodness), but the spirit of the puppy is captured quite nicely with the gorgeous, full page black and white photos. A reviewer thought of the book to be written in a child's point of view and wouldn't appeal to adults, yet I think that it was written with a youthful pup's point of view- which naturally is from a young perspective. One just can't associate seriousness with an image of a puppy destroying your slippers, basking in all that is naughty and mischievous. It's a coffee table book that lightens the mood and celebrates youth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading At The Beach: Reviews
When I saw that Rose Rock has 10 children and 17 foster children I knew I'd be interested in her "rules" for them. Her rules are spot on. She starts off stating that we are parents, not friends. They need someone to guide them with structure, love and yes, even discipline. I love her views on no potty language, don't make promises you can't keep, treating everyone with respect, and to love books.

There is so much more in this book. I think it would make a good resource for parents and a great gift to anyone with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on parenting
WOW! This is one book I think every parent or thinking about becoming a parent should read. Agree with 100% of what Chris Rock's mom believes and teaches. As the mother of many I know she is spot on. Chapter One is about knowing the difference between being a parent and getting sucked into the 'friend' role with your kids. Kids have enough friends, what they need is a serious caring parent. Chapter Two deals with how children need and desire structure and discipline and direction in their lives. Chapter Three is a gem and in today's society its a chapter many parents could benefit from. Its all about teaching our children that within the home respectful, decent language is encouraged, while cussing and profanity are words that are great and wont get you serious attention from the right people.

Chapter 4 is near and dear to my heart because it deals with sitting down and eating a meal together no matter how simple the meal is. That eating together relaxes a person and allows them to open up. Am reminded of the history of meals eaten together. And I have read so many history books about great leaders where somewhere in the book I was reminded that great debate, dreams and aspirations that would become a reality were born.

Chapter 6 deals with the value of books and reading in general. Bear in mind that we are a homeschooling family with a healthy book budget, even in these tight economic times. Instead of junk food we buy brain food. The author reminds us to let reading feed a child's imagination, read to keep up with the world, read to travel the world and never be bored. She notes on page 124 the importance of having a family affair with reading. After Ron was hit and disabled by a drunk driver he could no longer hold and read books, and being a bibliophile who read lots myself, I started by buying three new books or checking out new books from the library, and reading a chapter from each, every evening. Not only did the entire family end up 'reading' three new books, but they were books that enlightened our lives and made us better people. On page 128 she writes about the value of comic books, which made me laugh aloud. Simply because it reminded me of when I was six and my Mom was shopping for a new coat and to keep me occupied I was given a stack of comic books to read, because we were a book and reading family. Perhaps to much she thought that day she was shopping for that coat, since she came out of the dressing room, looked up and saw a dozen maniquins had comic books in their hands, because I wanted to share the comic books.

Chapter 8 Dont Lie Down with Anything You Dont Want to Live with Forever. Whoa. Now this is one great chapter and I did a double take at the photo of the author because I swear she is my twin! Her advise about teaching ones child that we know best because we remember the pitfalls of growing up and how sex is a responisbility and isnt just about the act itself. And like the author we had our son talk to his doctor about fail safe sex, where he learned that one form may not be enough and that if one has sex they better be protected as well as prepared for any and all consequenses that come from the act.

Love her chapter on making memories, like before the child was born, family heritage and traditions, special new traditions, memories that dont cost money. Now I am a Christian and as such I appreciate her reminding me that the church is not a convenience store, and that prayer gives you power. And I agree 100% with her on page 224 where she cautions parents to NOT make promises you cannot keep. Think about that. It prevents a plethora of problems! Also remind parents to not be afraid to say 'I'm sorry' when we make a mistake. Children learn by example, and if they see us admitting we are flawed and human it encourages them to admit mistakes, learn from the mistakes, move on and become better.

Cannot recommend this book highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mama Rock Rocks It!
I bought this book thinking it would be a quick, easy little read.It was a quick read, but I underestimated the valuable advice contained between its two covers.Rose Rock, Chris Rock's mother, is a no-nonsense mama!She gives straightforward guidance for raising children to become accountable, self-sufficient adults who have morals, manners, and gumption to get the most out of their life.I found myself reading and re-reading parts - I even took notes!

The book is especially helpful for parents of boys.Rose Rock has a special gift for commanding respect from her children while simultaneously making them feel nurtured and protected.She is also gifted with imparting the secrets of this ability through her written word.

5-0 out of 5 stars :)
This item came WAY before the expected arrival date and was in the condition the seller stated it would be.I was very satisfied with it :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Parenting
There was a scene in this book where Rock's youngest son's girlfriend claimed she was pregnant. She and her husband met with the girl and said "our son gets $1.25 a day for lunch money, his brother does not give him money, and we will not raise the child for you." The girl disappeared fast.
This is the kind of blunt, facts-of-life parenting that too many Americans don't use. Too many parents today have trouble drawing the line with their children, and those of you who've watched "Supernanny" will know what I mean. "Mama Rock's Rules" is a great book about practical parenting (particularly for huge families). Anyone can say "we eat together as a family, no cursing at the table." But these rules have to be demonstrated over and over again.

There's one thing I'm not sure about..would this book have received any attention if Chris Rock weren't famous? It seems like a great book on family management regardless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A return to the original
Valerie Martin returns to the original ideas of Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by eliminating the girlfriend figure which quickly found its way into adaptations beginning with a play only a few years after the original. Valerie Martin also returns to the original by allowing her readers to see the world which Stevenson attempted to write about by emphasizing class/race/gender distinctions and showing the dual nature of England of Stevenson's time. Martin, intriguingly shows more of Mr. Hyde than the original allowed the audience, thus drawing in fans of the original and exciting first-time readers. This book is a must-buy for anyone who enjoyed the original or the 1991 play by David Edgar.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good (4.5 stars)
Mary Reilly is an alternate telling of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It's told from the point of view of Dr. Jekyll's housemaid, Mary, an observant young woman who is nonetheless somewhat blind to what's going on around her. She keeps a journal of her observations, in which she chronicles the increasingly bizarre behavior of the man she calls Master; and her encounters with his new assistant, Edward Hyde.

It's not a long book, only about 250 pages, but there's a lot packed in. At first glance, it would seem odd that Dr. Jekyll seeks out the company of a lowly housemaid; but they really have a lot in common, both having gone through, or going through, periods of darkness in their lives--Mary with the demon her father, and Dr. Jekyll with his demon Mr. Hyde.

The tension in this novel, especially in Mary's encounters with Mr. Hyde, is palpable, as is the London fog, which seems to surround everything. Right from the opening scene (which I won't describe; you have to read it for yourself), I was immediately hooked into the story May's language and grammar are colorful, too, and make her voice unique. The end of the book is somewhat marred by the anonymous postscript, but otherwise I enjoyed this novel. It's been a number of years since I read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but from what I can recall, Valerie Martin stays pretty close to Stevenson's book. Mary is for the most part knowledgeable about the world; but in several others, she's a complete innocent.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very deep, very well-written book
This is a book about addiction and the binding power of abusive relationships. Martin's writing is gothic and atmospheric, but it would be a shame to read this book as a thriller, a romance, or a sermon on the evils of the class system in Victorian England and miss out on the main point of the book.What Martin is saying about substance abuse is that the addiction is not to getting high, or to enjoying the substance itself, the addiction is to letting out the inner beast.Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde are both present in all abusers, who use substances to let out the evil inside their souls (not to get rid of it, to enjoy using it).Mary's father used alcohol to let out his demons, and Dr. Jeckyl used his experiments.Women like Mary are bound to them by loyalty, family ties, and love.This is a very deep book and will make you think!

4-0 out of 5 stars no title
Egrossing novel, especially in the last pages, but I cannot help feeling that it is somewhat of a cheap shot to use a famous classic upon which to build your story.So much of the suspense was already written by Robert Louis Stevenson, that Martin has less to imagine than most authors.Really should have read Jekyll and Hyde first.Martin was obviously a fan of "Upstairs, Downstairs".Probably where she got the idea.Slow moving, but because the reader always knows much more than the novel states, because of the earlier classic, it works.Lots of tidbits about Victorian life and housekeeping.Did Mary's father abuse her sexually?Of course, we think of that in these days, even though Martin really give us no reason to.Well written and plotted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Wonderful Execution
To really appreciate MARY REILLY, I'd recommend first reading the original THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE by Robert Louis Stevenson (a quick read) and then dive into MARY REILLY.You will really appreciate the way Ms. Martin weaves her story through the original.

(I was excited when the film version was released.John Malkovich would make an awesome Jekyll and Hyde.But the star was Julia Roberts and the original story was completely destroyed.DO NOT go by the film.Horrible.) ... Read more
