Product Description
This is an excellent book for both beginner and advanced clowns. This book is aimed at clowns and would-be clowns who want to improve their skills. Included are comedy routines as well as instructions on riding a unicycle, juggling, stilt-walking, applying makeup, mime, puppetry, and magic. The advice on employment possibilities is less useful than that on acquiring specific skills. Anyone interested in being a clown or becoming a better one will find this a treasure trove. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars First clowning book I read - after all these years it is still the best resource ever!
Excellent resource for any level clown. This was the first clowning book I read before I ever put on the greasepaint. For the first two years I clowned I read various resources about clowning at least an hour a day... after all these years of being a Joey I had a chance to read it again- it is quite simply the best all-in-one resource assembled! Buy it and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important clown bookyou can have!
My absolute favorite clowning book! If you can only get one clowning book get this one! Covers everything!!! Whenever I am writing clown shows I always go to this book. There are so many skit, gag and prop ideas in this book to build off of. It is truly GOLD!!! In addition to all the skit, gag and prop ideas it also covers make up techiniques as well as costuming. This book stays not on my book shelf or even out on a table but in my truck, so I always have access to it even when I am at work. I think one of the things that really makes this book so special to clowning is the fact that it is not just one author, there are around 10!! Each one writing on their speciality or passion.

I really wish they would come out with a second eddition of this book that would include websites and email address of clown scripts, ideas, gags, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Book for the Novice
I'm considering setting up as a childrens entertainer, so I purchased a good few books. This is without doubt the best of the bunch.

The book covers lots of aspects of clowning, gives great ideas, and is an easy read.

The only downside is that it does not have space to go as in depth in some areas as I would of liked - but there are plenty of speciality books to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a serious clown...er...wait a second
Every hobby has one or two definative books. This is it for clowning. Everything I wanted to find out and more. Like any good reference book it started me down the path and I have read several books recommended.

If you are going to get into clowning you need this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring book indeed!
Having read four customer reviews of this book, I might have had high expectations. Maybe I didn't realize it's true value at first, but after learning various skills, you may want to try others, which didn't catch your interest at first. Then you realize how powerful a tool this book is.

Until now I've focused on juggling and unicycling. The book not only teaches you how to ride a unicycle, -it also provides a lot of amusing variations. Though I knew how to ride before buying this book, it taught me how to ride in a very ridiculous way, seemingly out of control. I've experienced a tremendous effect when acting upon these hints in front of an audience. ...

Just recently I grew interested in the stiltwalking sections and made a pair of wooden tie-on stilts. I'm not exactly an engineer, but following the instructions, all I needed was a saw, some wood, a drill, some glue, some bolts and screws.

Reading the ingenious instructions given sometimes make me laugh out loud, thinking of how it would work in real life. The illustrations are really amusing, and I do enjoy all the hints on starting a clowning business. Lots of detailed information.

Also, the book is packed with numerous jokes and material that can be used for shows. The next stage for me will be learning how to twist balloons into different animal shapes.

I was actually looking for a book on how to put on clowns' make-up for my unicycling. This book is all you need to know about various types of make-up for various clown types, plus so much more. If you're thinking about clowning, either for fun or for money, I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

Product Description

What a great gift for lovers of the links! Amateur golfer—and Club Captain—Ed Harris presents a thoroughly entertaining and informative introduction to the origins and history of the game. He follows golf as it spreads from Scotland to the U.K., U.S., and wider world, and looks at equipment, clothing, clubs, famous courses, top tournaments (including the Masters), and key players past and present. An entire chapter covers women golfers, while others explore golf’s supervisory bodies. And those who enjoy a good golf tale will find fun stories aplenty about snobbery and obsession in the sport, plus trivia and jokes.

Since the publication of the Christian Pioneer for December, the liberal students of the University of Glasgow have held a meeting, and passed resolutions in approval of those of their Professors, praying the abolition of religious tests, and in reply to- many of the statements contained in the reasons of protest assigned by the professorial minority. The Senates of King's and Maris- chall Colleges, Aberdeen, have, by majorities, joined in the requisition for the abrogation of religious tests. A movement in the same direction has taken place in the United Associate denomination; and considerable stir has been occasioned among various civil and religious communities in relation to the subject. We rejoice in the agitation, satisfied that religious liberty will ultimately be the gainer, though we question much whether some of the parties, the keenest iu the struggle, are enlightened enough to understand thoroughly the rights of the mind, and the genuine principles and practical bearings of civil and religious freedom. 5-0 out of 5 stars Collected Drawings of Aubrey Beardsley
What a terriffic book!Loved the black and white drawings, and the history of this designer.I wish I could have gotten a book jacket, but,
well, you sometimes have to forfit.Price was right.Arrived in Speedy time and It is a keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Collected, but not complete
Well, the complete work would be a very thick book. This one gives plenty to enjoy, though. It starts with conventional drawings or lithos, including pieces ("Hail Mary" and "Francesca di Rimini") that capture a romanticism like the Pre-Raphaelites. Just a few pages in, though, we see illustrations from "Le Morte D' Arthur." These illustrations seemed to be the turning point in his career. When you see the whole set of work done for that book, you can see Beardsley's work mature into the style considered his signature. (It seems odd to talk about stages in a career that was so tragically short.)

Beardsley's work is commonly placed within Art Nouveau. It certainly displays the flowing curves and sensuality of that movement. I find the hard contrasts of black ink and open white atypical of Nouveau, and immediately recognizable. He took its sensuality well beyond normal bounds, as seen here in some pairs of his drawings, the original and the bowdlerized forms. His "Lysistrata," sampled here, exaggerates that into satiric bawdy surrounded by effete clothes (what few there are) and manners. The "Earl Lavender" drawing hints at some of the extremes in his "Under the Hill", which is not represented here.

The reproductions are large and legible, making the images easy to enjoy in their detail. I fault this book only for lack of an index or table of contents, making specific images hard to find, and for attributions that seem incomplete. Dates, in particular, are missing from nearly all of the works, even in the extensive catalogue in the back of the book. This is really a picture book, though, and the pictures are all that the reader could hope for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessity for any fan of Beardsley
This book has ALL of Beardsley's work accompanied with insightful text. Beware, though -- some of his drawings are of extremely crude sexual nature -- definitely not a book you want on your coffee table when you have in-laws coming in from out of town.

Beardsley did much of his work for shock value, much like his buddy Oscar Wilde, so this is not necessarily TASTEFUL nnudity here. For those who can stomach it though, acquainting yourself with this artist is worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luscious Beardsley - exotica and erotica
This is a large volume (212 pages, incl. index) of Beardsley drawings, mostly in chronological order representing his six years of major creativity - being only 26 when he died.

Extract from 1967 cover: "Here is the art of Aubrey Beardsley full of beauty and decadence, sensuality and sin."

His work is easily recognizable; a unique style of black-and-white line drawings, influenced by Japanese woodcuts and Art Nouveau. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 55 hours of listening to a fine reader
I was not familiar with Davidson as a reader, but he seems well-suited to the classics.I do agree with one reviewer that Pierre was a bit stuffy and 'bufoonish' for someone who is actually the hero of the piece and not as old as the reader made him sound, but I will also say that I looked forward to my time in the car and to see what was coming next in his narration. I thought he did an adequate job with the feminine voices, a fine one with the males, and was perhaps best suited to the non-dialogue portions.

Listener beware! The last 12 'chapters' are Tolstoy's ruminations on humanity, society, and religion and really detract from having finished the actual narrative. While Tolstoy was obviously a man ahead of his time and a great intellect, he repeats himself in these essays, and I would have rather read them (or not). The essays should have been clearly marked as separate and in some versions of "War and Peace" they are appendices, as they should be.In this version some of these ruminations are interspersed with the story, and they do make sense in their placement as they always brought the reader back around to the tale; but the last pieces failed to do this and left me feeling a little disappointed that the story was done and he had messed up the ending for me (even though I already knew how it ended).

4-0 out of 5 stars Flawed But What The Hell!
Frederik Davidson, aka David Case, was a ubiquitous voice on the audiobooks scene before his death a few years ago. He excites widely varying reactions: some find his languid, rather campy recitations rivetting; others find them merely languid and rather campy to the point of having-to-turn-the-damn-thing-off! Immediately!

I think he's highly variable. He tells a good yarn but his penchant for imitating all the various voices of the characters - EVEN young girls - is offputting because he quite often makes a hash of them. Other readers "suggest" the voices; Davidson tries to play all the parts as if he's performing a one-man play.

Happily, his reading of "War And Peace" minimizes (comparatively) the annoyance-level. He occasionally messes up: his voice for Dolokhov veers between "aristocratic" and "working-class" depending on the situation and his voice for Pierre is a little too buffoonish for comfort but for me his reading stays on the enjoyable side of "languid" and "campy". Besides, it's such a great story that it's almost impossible to completely ruin. And the price is an amazing bargain.

However, try the audio samples to see if you can bear Mr Davidson' style of delivery before parting with your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Read
First off, I wouldn't pretend to be a scholar of classic literature. This review is written by a regular working guy with a good job that allows me to listen to audiobooks. Having listened to this reading of War and Peace I gladly feel obliged to leave comment.

Narrator Frederick Davidson is a pleasure to listen to as he gives life to all the various characters both male and female. This was no chore to listen to, nor is the story all that complicated as the characters appear and reappear throughout the story. I actually took notes during the first cd in order to remember who was related to who, the various princes and rank of officers and gentry. This may have helped the sometimes feeble memory to get the characters straight however this may not have been entirely necessary. It didn't hurt to have the reference notes close at hand.

I can now rest comfortably knowing that, when my day on this earth is done, I am a better man for having this translation of War and Peace read to me by this wonderful narrator. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A Beautiful Mind is a 2001 American film based on the life of John Forbes Nash, Jr., a Nobel Laureate in Economics. The film was directed by Ron Howard and written by Akiva Goldsman. It was inspired by a bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-nominated 1998 book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar. The film stars Russell Crowe, along with Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Christopher Plummer and Paul Bettany. The story begins in the early years of Nash's life at Princeton University as he develops his "original idea" that will revolutionize the world of mathematics. Early in the movie, Nash begins developing paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully watching the loss and burden his condition brings on his wife and friends. The film opened in US cinemas on December 21, 2001. It was well-received by critics, grossed over $300 million worldwide, and went on to win four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress. It was also nominated for Best Leading Actor, Best Editing, Best Makeup, and Best Score. The film has been criticized for its inaccurate portrayal of some aspects of Nash's life. ... Read more
