Product Description
Although they grew up a mere fifteen miles apart, two young homestead adults meet by chance in the fledgling Lower Canada of the mid-eighteen hundreds. Their parents, however, had arrived into that wilderness area a quarter-century earlier from distant and culturally-diverse parts of the world.'Their Land Of Promise' travels to those distant lands; breathes life and love into those parents again; shares their problems; learns their dreams; and eventually it travels with them into Britain's colony, a land full of dense wilderness forests - forests the newcomers challenge with a Bible in one hand and an axe in the other. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book overall!!
This book is great if you want to know the bigger details about presidents, their vices & the first ladies. The one thing missing from the book is the results of the '04 election and I didn't see anything about John Kerry. (of course you can correct me if i'm wrong). Otherwise, it's worth the buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Your Garbage Can!
As another reviewer has already alluded to, this book is absurdly biased. It only takes seconds to realize the book is seriously screwed up. Sadly, there are quite a few books about presidents that came out after Obama was elected and you can see that nearly all of them were very anxious to re-write history through the eyes of conservative hating liberals. Amazingly the books were written right after Obama was elected and before he had done anything. That didn't stop them from devoting a huge section to Obama and all of his "accomplishments". Look at the date on this book. The sections on George Washington and Ronald Reagan, both multiple term presidents, aren't that much bigger than Obama's before he even had any time in office!

Just read the section on the economic policies of Reagan and that alone would put you off buying this disgrace of a book if you are even remotely fair minded. Basically it says that his policies took a long time (two years) to work and did little to help anyone who wasn't well to do or anyone who didn't have stocks.

It's funny because I have been in the lower middle class all of my life and after suffering through the nightmare that was Carter's presidency, Reagan seemed like a godsend. I guess the middle class and poor don't need jobs! I guess the poor aren't affected by ridiculously high inflation! I guess they're also not affected by 20% interest rates, and certainly giving the poor free food is of no use to them.

If you're a liberal who loves being told what you want to hear as opposed to the truth, this book is for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful..."Facts" is a Little Phony
I was looking at this book in the library and was surprised at how misleading, biased, and false a lot of these "facts" are - and I had to put it down after reading about one President!

Although I am a Democrat, I am fascinated by Richard Nixon and his amazing number of accomplishments that are shadowed by the Watergate scandal. Little do many people know that Nixon had many liberal to moderate qualities that make him potentially appealing to open-minded Democrats and many other people. Yet the section on Nixon was mostly interested in twisting facts and diminishing the *overall* picture of a misunderstood and underrated President.

This book claims that Nixon cut many programs to increase defense spending. False! Look it up. The book words things in such a way that makes it sound like Nixon may have been guilty during the 1952 fund crisis, even though Nixon's deepest enemies still have nothing against him in the matter. The book underplays Nixon's most significant achievements, like starting the EPA, and gives Watergate a gross unproportional amount of coverage. There's plenty of other questionable material. By the end of his portion, you get such an inaccurate and biased point of view that you wonder why this was called a fact book at all. Don't like Nixon? That's fine, but if many things stated about him are wrong, who knows what is written here for every other President.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for your reference shelf!
This book is exactly what I was looking for!Includes basically everything you need to know about the history of our presidents in one volume.A huge volume...but still...one source and all in one place. The book is organized for quick reference, but also is simply a great read cover to cover.Being female, I particularly enjoyed the detailed write-ups on each of their wives. The rest discusses election details, selected members of their cabinets, important events and contributions as well as their mistakes and flaws. Each section has a biography of their lives, both before and after their presidency. Lots of great (black and white) photos too. Political cartoons and controversy included.I was unable to detect any political bias at all.The author could be democrat or republican or whatever. You can't tell from the content. Each president appears to be presented fairly and factually. Includes "the good, the bad, and the ugly"...no whitewashing, no excuses. Not your grandmother's history book, this one has some real substance, no fables.I am an avid reader and collector of American political history books, but if you can only own one book than this one is for you.It educates and entertains.Highly recommend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great
I need this for an online course I'm taking and so of course I'm pleased to get what I need. Otherwise I wouldn't be reading such a book, but considering it's required reading it is written well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
The book was what I expected and it got to me in only a few days, so over all I was happy.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
This book was not detailed about what it had been through. This book had been wet, the book was taped, pages were rolled. It was far from being in good shape.I buy all my books online and this one was the worst buy of them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What The Doctor Ordered
This book was just what I needed for the class I am taking.I could have purchased it from our book storefor almost twice as much as I spent through Amazon.Thank GOD for used books, especially the ones in good condition that you can purchase cheaper.Going to college, the cost is getting higher and higher,so getting books cheaper is a blessing for me. Amazon is the way to go.I have several more classes to take so I will be ordering my books through Amazon. I will let my classmates know what a deal I got through Amazon and I know that the book sales will climb.I am taking Early Childhood and only have a few more credits to go,then graduation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This is an excellent resource to find off the beaten path places and learn more about popular places, too. I followed this guide to Toroweap near the Grand Canyon. It said that it was so remote no one else would be at the primitive campsite (said no toilets). It needs updating. I found the campsite full of people in April after hazarding it down a long, dusty, and rocky road, and they had good toilets. I did meet some very nice people there, and it's a knock your socks off beautiful place. Glad I went.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed info, very good
Very personal writing style and detailed recommendations make this a great read and a great guide. This book covers the major sights in more detail than most compact guidebooks. The maps are easier to read than most guidebooks due to higher contrast. I loved the suggested iteneraries and "hidden" travel suggestions you may not find in other guidebooks. This is a thick book, maybe a bit bulky for travel.I do recommend it. It has been a great guide to help me plan a trip.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Southwest
I purchased this book in order to plan a 6 week trip to New Mexico and Arizona. If you want a book that will clearly and intelligently tell you about everything in these two states, this is a good option.Unfortunately, this book isn't very helpful in prioritizing sites. For example, I'm sure every single indian pueblo is listed, but it's difficult to tell which ones are worth allocating time to.Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent book, but, if this is your first visit to the area, you will need a more opinionated book to help you sift though the many, many sightseeing options.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best places to stay
I had earlier editions of this book and just loved them. We found the best places to stay, motels and bed and breakfasts that are really special, at a great price. I used this book for planning many trips to the Southwest, formyself and friends, and it was always a great experience. It is the bestreference books on places to eat and to stay, phone numbers of attractionsetc. You can find every place in the Southwest. However, I would still useanother travel guide for more detailed information about e.g. nationalparks and monuments or specific hiking tips. ... Read more
