Product Description

In New York, the tradition of postcurtain dinners is an established part of theater-going. This book is an anecdotal historical companion to legendary theater people and their favorite places to eat. It brings together theatrical and culinary stories linked with some of New York's oldest and most famous restaurants, such as the Cafe des Artistes, the Algonquin, Sardi's, and the Waldorf. The Cafe des Artistes's sumptuous duplexes had only tiny pullman kitchens. Its famed tenants—who included Noel Coward, Isadora Duncan, and Rudolf Valentino—bought their own raw ingredients, sent them down to the kitchen, and the kitchen then sent dinners upstairs on dumbwaiters precisely at the time requested. For more than 50 years, the Algonquin has been favored by British actors on tour, including Gertrude Lawrence, John Gielgud, and Peter Ustinov, while American Orson Welles spent his honeymoon there. At Sardi's, Laurence Olivier dined with Noel Coward after a show to tell him his marriage to Vivien Leigh was over. A vibrant mix of anecdote and entertainment, this book will appeal to thespians, those interested in theater and food history, and any visitor to New York.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great read
The story of Noah's ark retold as the moving adventures of a poor animal tamer who is sent to get animals for the ark since Noah's son Ham is too much of a coward. A beautifully written, touching book of human courage anddaring. Rosemary Harris combines humour and pathos to form a truely greatstory. One of my favourites! ... Read more

Excerpt: Frederick Bailey Deeming (30 July 1853 23 May 1892) was an English-born Australian murderer. Deeming was born in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England, son of Thomas Deeming, brazier, and his wife Ann, née Bailey. He was a "difficult child" according to writers Maurice Gurvich and Christopher Wray. At 16 years of age he ran away to sea, and thereafter, he began a long career of crime, largely thieving and obtaining money under false pretences. He was also responsible for the murder of his first wife Marie, and his four children, at Rainhill, England, on or about 26 July 1891, and a second wife, Emily, at Windsor, Melbourne, on 24 December 1891. Only three months elapsed between the discovery of Emily Mathers body in Windsor, Melbourne, in March 1891, and Deemings execution for her murder in June 1891; a remarkably short time by comparison to modern western legal standards. Not only was this due to unusually efficient police work, it was also a result of the considerable international media interest the murder attracted. For example, it was an English journalist working for the Melbourne Argus who first approached Emily Mathers mother in Rainhill, delivering the news of her daughters murder. Another factor was Deemings behaviour in public; for while often using different names, he usually drew attention to...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10809324 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Highly Recommended Movie Concerning Irish Encounters With Good Selkies
This is a great tale of beauty, hope, love and enchantment! The story is set around a small Irish coastal fishing village at the beginning of the 19th century. It emphasizes that the universe is much greater then people imagine, and that there are other intelligent life forms that exist. These tales are often put down to mythology and folk tales.Yet could there be some truth behind them?I also love this movie because it illustrates the special gifts and higher capabilities that other species may have.It reminds us that we are not alone, too.I highly recommend this movie! ...
