5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Animal (and Movie) Lovers
This was a great book. It is about Tippi Hedren (and her family) in the 1970's and their desire to make a movie about big cats. It is really a warm and sometimes heartbreaking story of the tenacity of this family in holding on to a dream. They went through so much in the making of their movie (Roar!) and the things they learned about big cats (the hard way - with many visits to the emergency room) make an interesting read. Unfortunately, Roar was pretty much panned when it came out in theaters. I have seen it and although the dialog is kind of "corney", the big cats are simply breathtaking. In reading this book, I came to know some of the life stories of my favorite animal actors in the movie. Tippi Hedren now runs The Shambala Preserve in California. Shambala is a nonprofit animal preserve that is home to almost seventy animals including African lions, Siberian and Bengal tigers, leopards, servals, mountain lions, bobcats, lynx, and Florida panther. Please visit their website at www.shambala.org to find out how you can help these beautiful animals

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!...Amazing Movie!
The lady that was "Raised by Wolves" has obviously been living in a cave. What a ludicrous and mean thing to say about this lovely benefactor of a woman that has spent a significant percentage of her life supporting and caring for these huge cats, largely with her own assets.

The book is a great read and entertaining account of her and her husbands struggle to make a fun, family-orientated, movie worthy of these magnificent creatures. In the film, ROAR, her husband, at the time, Noel Marshall, in one of the... bravest, most amazing acts ever to be recorded in film, while surrounded by big cats, bare-handedly, without the aid of protection, injected himself into the middle of a fight, breaking it up...an actual fight between two very large, aggressive, mad, African male lions, Wow!...And that's "No Act"! And,, that's just one of the many astounding scenes you will find in this movie. It is definitely worth watching!

If there truly are Earth Angels walking among us...this beautiful, caring, woman would have to be first cousin to Rahmiel and Verchiel. Tippi Hedren's humanitarian efforts with Big Cats, Elephants and other fortunate animals has been exemplary and her personal rapport with them legendary.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gaah!Disgusting!
The content of this book is appalling.Hedren and her husband are apparently vapid, self-indulgent, stupid, and spoiled Hollywood ninnys with more money than common sense.

Hedren encountered big cats on a film set. Bedazzled by their exoticness, she and her husband accumulated and warehoused nearly 100 animals. Hedren is totally ignorant and oblivious of the animal cruelty involved in this.

It is just plain wrong to keep a wild animal for a pet, even if it is beautiful. The big cats are not domestic, not loving, and Hedren has scars to prove it.It can only be ego gratification."The big cat community" discussed supports poaching and extinction in the wild by maintaining demand for these "pets".

Avoid this book at all costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving, wonderfulstory
In The Cats Of Shambala, actress Tippi Hedren details the often harrowing history of her association with big (and I mean lion and tiger big) cats. From her first meeting with one, to the collection and saving of cats from various untimely fates, to the many trials and disasters endured during the filming of the ill-received movie, ROAR, through her establishment of The Roar Foundation (a permanent preserve out in Acton, California), she weaves an entralling tale of love for these animals. Many of the big cat subjects we meet here take on interesting and colorful personalities. There's more depth to these big cats than in many characters in today's popular novels!

Moving, absorbing, inspiring, riveting, and never, never boring. You come away with a new appreciation and respect for big cats after reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Cat Chaos!
Have you ever dreamt of raising a lion or tiger in your house as a pet?As a throw back to the Joy Adamson and "Born Free" era I dared to dream that dream, and came to the unfortunate realization that there are no books on the subject, until, that is, I found "Cats of Shambala".It is an insightful, funny, and sometimes heart wrenching look at life among the big cats, and what its like to share your home with them.It certainly brings home the reality of the chaos that is caused by these majestic creatures, and anyone reading it would certainly do well to live vicariously through Tippi and bring the book home rather than the cat! For those of you, who like me, have found yourself living with any of the exotic cats as pets, I'm sure you'll find this book answers many of the questions you've been asking. ... Read more

Product Description
A privileged witness to the glamorous spirit of the 1950s and 60s, Milton H. Greene photographed the greatest artists, actors, and personalities of the twentieth century. Renowned for his fashion photographs, Greene perfectly captured the fantasy, elegance, and beauty of his models, for which he secured assignments from major national publications and prestigious advertising clients. But That’s Another Story: A Photographic Retrospective of Milton H. Greene reproduces, in their original clarity and integrity, pictures that have been largely unavailable since Greene’s death in 1985. Organized thematically, it features both the widely published fashion and celebrity series (including the campaign Greene shot for American Airlines in the 1950s) and some intimate backstage candids. A whole chapter is dedicated to photos of Marilyn Monroe, where some of her most iconic portraits mix with private moments from her life. Ultimately, Greene’s photography invites us back to an era when film and fashion, art and style were at their highest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The cover sets the tone
I love this book! Very heavy and large and with amazing lifelike photos. Very crisp , clear and bold! I love the section of Marliyn photos and mainly why I purchased it in the first place, but there are other amazing photos as well . I was captivated by the two of Sharon Tate and the many beautiful fashion shots of models as well as celebrities and I enjoyed the last section of Milton and his family and friends. If you loved Milton's Marilyn, this one is a must. This book has a slipcase which is the cover on the listing and another of Marilyn on the reverse side. Models adorn the front and back of the actual book. Cloth spine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a gift
I selected this book because it was on my daughter-in-law's wish list so I gave it to her at Xmas. She absolutely loves it and I like it too.A wonderful addition to her book collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Capturing the Spirit Through Photography
The photos in this collection were well selected, poignant and captivating. Some of Hollywood's most famous actors of the mid-twentieth century are featured as well as several of the iconic Marilyn Monroe. In each, Milton H. Greene's genius for capturing something essential in the subject eminates from the page. ... Read more

Excerpt: Willie Hugh Nelson (born April 30, 1933) is an American country singer-songwriter, author, poet, actor and activist. He reached his greatest fame during the outlaw country movement of the 1970s, and remains iconic, especially in American popular culture. Now in his 70s, Willie Nelson continues to tour and has performed in concerts and fundraisers with other major musicians, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Dave Matthews. He also continues to record albums prolifically in new genres that embrace reggae, blues, jazz, folk, and popular music. Nelson was born and raised in Abbott, Texas, the son of Myrle Marie (née Greenhaw) and Ira Doyle Nelson, a mechanic and pool hall owner. His grandparents William Alfred Nelson and Nancy Elizabeth Smothers gave him mail-order music lessons starting at age six. He wrote his first song when he was seven and was playing in a local band at age nine. Willie played the guitar, while his sister Bobbie played the piano. He met Bud Fletcher, a fiddler, and two siblings joined his band, Bohemian Fiddlers, while Nelson was in high school. While he was in high school he took pa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=149709 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get This Book!
If you are a pet owner/lover get this book.It is informative, funny, and moving.Gives one a new perspective on life and death and the value of a certain kind of friendship that only an animal can bring to your life.Highly recommended.Wonder what ever became of the author and why she has not written more books?

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and heartwrenching
Reading this book not only opens our eyes to the plight of animals--especially pets and, namely, cats--who become ill with cancer, it allows us to enter the minds and hearts of the humans who are entrusted with their care.We are allowed to peer behind the curtain to understand the perspective of both the cats themselves and their human caregivers--both their human companions who love them and the medical professionals who come to love them as they treat their illness and valiantly try to extend (or, at least, improve the quality of) their lives. As one who has recently lost a most beloved feline to this disease, it was both quite enlightening and eye opening--relieving me of self-criticism and the inner voice of guilt at not being able to save my beloved Natasha--even with the most modern medicine and technology available. A SNOWFLAKE IN MY HAND succeeded in enlightening me as to a greater understanding of this disease, the challenges it presents in terms of effective treatments, and its frequent progression, all while allowing the glimmer of hope to shine through from those once-in-a-while, joyful outcomes when a cat is cured. All cats who meet with this fate, as well as their caregivers, deserve a special salute for their bravery and for their dignity in the face of such saddness.

4-0 out of 5 stars sad but true stories of the end of life for our wonderful pets
I can say I knew this would be sad.....but having had to put down some of my precious pets over the years would want to be with them as they passed over the rainbow bridge so I sat with them until the end so they would not be alone.I anguishes after each loss but was glad I could be a part of their going on into a new life.

5-0 out of 5 stars makes me cry
This is a wonder insightful book that takes you into the way life is in a vet clince

4-0 out of 5 stars Touching book.
The death of a beloved dog or cat....it is very hard. This book helps to cope with it a little bit, if nothing more than the title and cover picture. Each cat is every bit as much of an individual as are human beings; each cat, a beautiful snowflake. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Goodall Harvest for Hope
Wow!This book gave me so much to think about my personal influence on the environment and what I can do to support earth-health.It's changed the way I think about food and the process of getting that food to my table. We all need to be more aware of what big business has done to the food industry and how we can support earth-friendly, sustainable products.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERYone should read this book
Jane gives us the rationale behind our food choices and explains the hidden implications of so much we take for granted. Although Jane is vegetarian she doesn't condemn the meat eaters - instead she guides the carnivores toward responsible choices. It's well written and very readable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guide to mindful eating.
"Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA's job."
Phil Angell, Monsanto director of corporate communications.

"Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety."
FDA Federal Register, "Statement of Policy: Foods Derived from New Plant Varieties"

So who takes the welfare of the consumer and his/her environment seriously? Certainly not the agro-chemical corporations, certainly not US governmental agencies (FDA, USDA, EPA, entities which function, almost exclusively, as industry champions), although many other governments do substantially better. Ultimately this is a task that falls to people like Jane Goodall.

Goodall's Harvest for Hope starts slowly, even a bit weakly, but in due course presents many excellent expositions on the far reaching costs, side effects and consequences of our food choices. Topics examined include:
How we lost common sense farming.
Seeds of discontent (patenting life and the monopolization of agriculture).
"Frankenfood."
Animal factories (industrial factory farming).
Ravaging the oceans and seas.
Becoming vegetarian.
Globalization of food transport/ distribution (high carbon/energy footprint groceries).
Deep organic versus shallow organic foods.
Choosing local and seasonal foods.
Healthful eating (where science and ethics speak with the same voice).
Water (it's time to wise up about the most valuable material on Earth).
Living smarter-- person by person, purchase by purchase, bite by bite.

Many deeply irresponsible books flood our culture presuming to treat diet, health, and food choice. Many of these are quite successful in terms of sales, but are hopelessly absurd and actually dangerous on many levels (the Atkins books, for example). Read `Harvest for Hope,' then treat yourself to Howard Lyman's books (`The Mad Cowboy'), and especially T. Colin Campbell's `The China Study.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Harvest of Hope
This book by Jane Goodall really speaks to how interconnected our health is to the foods we choose to eat.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hoping For More
This book was more about Jane's views on food than on food itself.Good book if you are a fan of her work.Bad choice if you are buying it for any insight regarding the culinary industry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honoring Hitch
The book aims to honor the master of suspense without a lot of heavy-handed introspection that some Hitchcock biographies layer on. Often Hitchcock books try to delve so deeply into the psyche of the director that the miss the fun and joy of his filmmaking. His later years show him using all the tricks he learned but plagued by the difficulty of competing against himself and all his successes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Master of the Macabre
The impetus for author John William Law's book about Alfred Hitchcock is the 50th anniversary of the release of the movie //Psycho//.Right up front, in the introduction, Law advises the reader that his book is not meant to be yet another biography of Alfred Hitchcock--widely acknowledged as one of the motion picture industry's most talented directors.Rather, it is a careful examination of the circumstances and events that took place during the time when Hitchcock ascended to the status of an icon. This status was guaranteed by a full spectrum of creative endeavors encompassing movies filmed in Great Britain and the United States, the wildly popular television series //Alfred Hitchcock Presents// and numerous publications featuring Hitchcock's macabre sense of humor wrapped in tales of horror.

The most engaging aspects of this survey are the accounts of projects that Hitchcock failed to complete and the impact on the careers of the actors and actresses who played the unforgettable roles as his victims, such as Janet Leigh in //Psycho// and Tipi Hedren in //The Birds//.Fans of Hitchcock will appreciate the numerous back stories that provide new details about the making of these films.
