Excerpt: Edward Richard Schreyer (born 21 December 1935), commonly known as Ed Schreyer, is a Canadian politician, diplomat, and statesman who served as Governor General of Canada, the 22nd since that country's confederation. Schreyer was born and educated in Manitoba prior to being elected in 1958 to the province's legislative assembly. He later moved into federal politics, winning a seat in the House of Commons, but returned to Manitoba in 1969, becoming leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party (NDP). The party then won that year's provincial election, and Schreyer was called upon to act as Premier of Manitoba. He was in 1978 appointed as governor general by Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, on the recommendation of Prime Minister of Canada Pierre Trudeau, to replace Jules Léger as viceroy, and he occupied the post until succeeded by Jeanne Sauvé in 1984. As the Queen's representative, he was praised for raising the stature of Ukrainian Canadians, though disparaged for his lacklustre vigour in exercising the role of governor general, and, decades after departing the viceregal post, Schreyer again ran for election to the federal legislature. Though he ultimately failed to win a seat, he became the first ever person to run for election in Canada after serving as the country's governor general. During his time as Manitoba's premier, Schreyer was entitled to the accordant style of The Honourable, the same style he received again upon his appointme...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=232018 ... Original keyboardist Andy Creeggan left the band in 1995, and founding member Steven Page departed in 2009. History Indie origins Barenaked Ladies began as the duo of Ed Robertson and Steven Page. The two went to school together since Robertson was in grade four (Page was a grade ahead) at Churchill Heights Public School , but were not friends until they ran into each other at a Harvey's restaurant following a Peter Gabriel concert. Each interested to find that the other liked Gabriel, they began talking and found they had many of the same tastes. The two became friends, and bonded further when they were both counselors at Scarborough Schools Music Camp. They would play songs together, and Steve was impressed by Ed's ability to harmonize. Product Description
From Iris Johansen, the nationally acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of And Then You Die and The Ugly Duckling, comes her most electrifying novel yet.

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan has a rare--and bittersweet--gift. Her unique ability to reconstruct the identity of the long dead from their skulls has helped bring closure to parents of missing children. For Eve, whose own daughter was murdered and her body never found, the job is a way of coming to terms with her personal nightmare.

When she is approached by billionaire magnate John Logan to reconstruct the face of an adult murder victim, only his promise of a sizable charitable contribution persuades her to accept. It's a simple bargain, yet it's the most dangerous one she'll ever make.

The warning signs are clear. There is the specially equipped lab Eve is taken to in a country inn turned high-tech security fortress in rural Virginia. Surveillance cameras monitor her every move. The telephones are tapped. And then there is Logan himself--by turns ruthless, charming, and desperate.

But it's too late for Eve to walk out. The skull has begun to reveal its shocking identity, trapping her in a frightening web of murder and deceit. To free herself, she has no choice but to expose that identity and to trust Logan, the man who put her life in danger, a man who may see her as an expendable pawn.Amazon.com Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Twists and Turns
Eve Duncan's daughter Bonnie is killed by a serial killer and her body was never found. Eve becomes a forensic sculptor and puts faces on the skulls of unidentified murdered children so their parents can finally take them home. She knows Bonnie is dead, but she's still looking. Kinda gruesome.

Billionaire John Logan wants Eve to construct a face to skull he has. She resists, finally assents because someone is pressuring her not to and apparently that same someone doesn't want Eve to succeed.

There are many twists and turns in this five star suspense thriller, though some Johansen fans may not be happy as the romance defiantly takes a back seat to the suspense. I loved this book. It's the first in a series and I'm starting the next one tomorrow. Again, this was a great five star read.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Mystery
Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan is hired by an industrial mogul to reconstruct a face to a skull which has been kept hidden in a cornfield. Who the face belonged to, why the skull was hidden and why the mogul wants it reconstructed are the mysteries to be unveiled. That part of the novel will hold the readers interest to the end.I thought that part of the book was good.

The characters, however, I felt were shallow and had little depth.I didn't find myself getting really interested in any of them.Eve Duncan, while being gifted at her work, came across as emotionally mercurial and indecisive. The male characters left little lasting impressions.

I also thought that parts of the storyline dragged a little. For me, the 336 pages felt like it read longer.Overall, though, "The Face of Deception" is a decent read.I liked it enough to likely read more of the Eve Duncan series to see if the characters develop a little better.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Face of Deception
The Eve Duncan Series is such a good read and keeps you guessing - I will continue to read the entire series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Service!

4-0 out of 5 stars fine thriller with interesting characters
I have read and enjoyed other novels by Iris Johansen, and this was no exception.Johansen is a very good writer and her characters are lively and interesting, the situations less so.Eve Duncan is a forensic sculptor. She reconstructs faces from skulls and she's considered one of the best in the world.Enter John Logan, a billionaire who will give Eve anything she wants in exchange for her expertise on a secret project. When Eve finally relents, she is whisked away both literally and figuratively as assassins and political figures become involved in covering up what Logan and Duncan find.

I found the plot intriguing and the characters very interesting, though Eve was a bit maudlin in her grief and the situations were not always realistic.Still, I don't resent the time I spent reading this book and would recommend it to others, though I think there are better works by this author. ...
