Product Description
Presenting the works of 50 contemporary artists and photographers from around the world, Strangers explores the different roles the camera now plays in negotiating the boundaries between public and private life, trust and fear, intimacy and isolation. Accompanying the first recurring exhibition of its kind devoted to photography and related media at the International Center of Photography in New York, Strangers investigates the social world through images that have been created as a result of encounters with people unknown to one another. In addition to the more personal and psychological aspects of estrangement, the artists in Strangers also engage with the theme of globalization and diaspora--an especially timely subject in its geopolitical ramifications. Strangers includes illuminating biographical essays on each of the artists and their works; four original essays by ICP curators Brian Wallis, Christopher Phillips, Carol Squiers and Edward Earle that explore the ever-evolving and prescient theme of strangers; and approximately 200 images generated in a variety of media from traditional and digital processes to multimedia installations and video. Artists represented include Olivio Barbieri, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Luc Delahaye, Rineke Dijkstra, David Goldblatt, Bill Henson, Susan Meiselas, Shirin Neshat, John Schabel and Joel Sternfeld, among others.Edited by Edward Earle, Christopher Phillips, Carol Squiers and Brain Wallis..Hardcover, 8 x 10 in./288 pgs / 220 color 0 BW0 duotone 0 ~ Item D20419 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absorbing Examination of Forty Contemporary Image-Makers
This is a great book.It is the catalog of an exhibition (the first in a planned series of triennials) held September-November 2003.The curators "realized that many artists were leaving the studio and going out into public to engage people who were unknown to them as part of their art-making activity" and hence titled the exhibition "Strangers." The exhibition was "largely planned and carried out in the period following September 11, 2001, when the issue of fear and trust among people in public spaces seemed unavoidable."

The 40 artists (not 50 as stated in the Synopsis and Product Description above) are Francis Alÿs, Olivo Barbieri, Yto Barrada, Chien-Chi Chang, Leif Claesson, Nancy Davenport, Luc Delahaye, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Rineke Dijkstra, Harun Farocki, Coco Fusco, David Goldblatt, Renée Green, Julie Henry, Bill Henson, Ben Judd, Justine Kurland, Jana Leo, Liu Zheng, Tim Maul, Susan Meiselas, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Matthias Müller, Shirin Neshat, Yoshua Okon, Richard Renaldi, Julika Rudelius, John Schabel, Collier Schorr, Zineb Sedira, Kiki Seror, Bruno Serralongue, Efrat Shvily, Eyal Sivan, Joel Sternfeld, Beat Streuli, Fiona Tan, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Sharon Yaari, and Shizuku Yokomizo. They were born between 1930 and 1979 with an "average" of 1959.It's an international group, with 15 born in Europe, 14 in North America, and the others in Australia, China, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, South Africa and Taiwan.

The 248 pages (not 288 as stated in the Product Details above) alternate between essays (pages 12-18, 60-63, 105-136 [older writings on strangers printed on yellow-green background], 178-184, 226-230) and "artist pages" (20-59, 64-103, 138-177, 186-225).For each artist, one page is devoted to a review of his/her recent work and a description of the works in the exhibition; three pages are devoted to reproductions of the works themselves.Between the well-chosen images and the well-written text, I felt I had a pretty good idea of the artists' works. The medium for each work is given in the back, as are a list of exhibitions and a bibliography for each photographer or video artist.

Some of the works stretch the theme of the exhibition; for example, Davenport's and Shvily's architectural shots do not show any people in them, so it's a leap to say that they concern "strangers."Nevertheless, the book is attractively designed and fascinating, and makes me interested in seeing the next International Center of Photography triennial in 2006.Purchase this book from Amazon.com! ... James Maury "Jim" Henson (September 24, 1936 ? May 16, 1990), was one of the most widely known puppeteers in American history. He was the creator of The Muppets. He was the leading force behind their long run in the television series Sesame Street and The Muppet Show and films such as The Muppet Movie (1979) and creator of advanced puppets for projects like Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Return of the Jedi. He was also an Oscar-nominated film director, Emmy Award-winning television producer, and the founder of The Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Henson's sudden death on May 16, 1990, of streptococcus pneumonia resulted in an outpouring of public and professional affection. There have since been numerous tributes and dedications in his memory. Henson?s companies, which are now run by his children, continue to produce films and television shows. On September 26, 1992, Henson was posthumously awarded the Courage of Conscience Award for being a "Humanitarian, muppeteer, producer and director of films for children that encourage tolerance, interracial values, equality and fair play." ... Product Description
Farscape is an Australian-American science fiction television series filmed in Australia and produced for the Nine Network then for later seasons Sci-Fi Channel. The series was conceived by Rockne S. O'Bannon and produced by Jim Henson Productions and Hallmark Entertainment. The Jim Henson Company was largely responsible for the various alien makeup and prosthetics, and two regular characters (the animatronic puppets Rygel and Pilot) are entirely Creature Shop creations. Although the series was under contract for five seasons, it was abruptly canceled after production had ended on its fourth season, effectively ending the series on a cliffhanger. Co-producer Brian Henson later secured the rights to Farscape, paving the way for a three-hour miniseries entitled Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, which Henson himself directed. New webisodes have been announced, but production has been repeatedly put on hold. A new comic book miniseries was due for release in November 2008 that will be in the continuity of both the series and the hoped-for webisodes. ... Read more

Product Description
Jim Henson's Muppet Babies was an American animated television series that aired from September 15, 1984 to December 29, 1990 on CBS. It was spun off from a dream sequence in The Muppets Take Manhattan, released two months earlier, where Miss Piggy imagined what it would be like if she and Kermit the Frog grew up together. The show portrayed childhood versions of the Muppets living together in a large nursery in the care of a human woman called Nanny (the whereabouts of their parents are never addressed). Nanny appears in almost every episode, but viewers never see her face, only the babies' view of her pink skirt as well as her distinctive green and white striped socks. Muppet Babies was produced by The Jim Henson Company and Marvel Productions. The rights are now held by Disney-ABC Domestic Television. Although the episodes were 30 minutes (including commercials), it was typically shown in 60 and even 90 minute blocks during the peak of its popularity. Outside of the United States, the show was distributed by Walt Disney Television Animation. ... Read more
