Product Description
As “the Greatest Generation,” as they have been dubbed, begins to pass away, we are beholden to remember and to revere their exploits. The heroism of these men will stand out forever. These were men who could look death in the eyes and face him down. They were ordinary Americans who went on to do extraordinary things.

This memoir tells the stories of five such men and shows how their heroism was based on faith in the Lord and in His angels. These men were Mormons, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and no matter where they were sent in harm’s way their faith was as solid as the rock and bore them up.

They served in various services and in all the major theaters of World War II: in Europe, in the Pacific, in Alaska, Italy, and North Africa. They endured the carnage of war and saw friends and comrades killed and wounded. Yet through it all they felt the protective presence of their own guardian angels and escaped unscathed. This book is a testimony to their faith and teaches us the lessons we need to bear in mind today, in our post-9-11 world. The Lord still sends his guardian angels to watch over us, and if our faith is strong enough, we too can overcome. ... Read more

"With all the detail of a New Yorker profile, Ansberry has turned the lives of these women into gorgeous domestic history." - Booklist

In a tiny neighborhood perched atop a hill in Pittsburgh thrives a world we think we have lost. It is a world of loyalty, faith, energy, and it is a world composed of women in their seventies and eighties who have spent most of their lives in this tightly knit community. Having grown up there, raised families there, and buried their loved ones there, these women still live wonderful, independent, energetic lives. From their common perspective of age come family stories that span the twentieth century, and through them our rushed and restless generation is reminded of the important things in life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Troy Hill at it's finest
I grew up on Mt. Troy but went to school at Most Holy Name Elementary. I married my husband of 40 yrs who lived on Troy Hill. I was in the same class as Sarah Wohleber. And yet I never knew these wonderful women existed on Troy Hill. This book was given to me by my sister-in-law who also grew up on Troy Hill.Unless you understand the diversity of Pittsburgh and the nationality division, you cannot appreciate this book. The north side had the Italians on the lower side and Germans on the upper side. The South side had the Polish and Slavic nationalities. The Hill side had the black population and the rest fell in the cracks. These women as in all the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh kept it together like glue. It is an extremely well written book and captures one little niche of an amazing city of cultural pride.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...but the last chapter made it worth it
This book was not what I expected.I was looking for either a story about each individual women or how they all interacted. The book just seems to jump from one story to the next. All the names were so similar that it was hard to keep track of who was from each family.I never did quite get how they all interacted.I know that they all knew each other from living on Troy Hill, but other than that.....

That being said, these women were all amazing. They did was has to be done and didn't complain. In reading this it was easy to see my own grandparents and understand a little better why they do the things they do....why relationships and family is so important. The last chapter kind of made the book.It talks about the vitures of friendship and how these women have been friends for so long that they wouldn't know what to do without the other. It is rare to find a friendship like that in today's society.Friends and Family are the world to these women....maybe we can all learn from that

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......
Maybe it was the writer's fault, but this story just wasn't presented the way I thought it would be.It turned out to be more of a travelogue of this little neighborhood than individual stories about the ladies themselves. I couldn't finish it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lives well-lived
The Women of Troy Hill chronacles the lives of a group of women who have lived on Troy Hill, not far from Pittsburg for most , if not all their lives. It follows family's immigration to this country, settling down, and the changing roles of women in America throughout the 1900's.These women are strong, faith-filled and examples of lives well lived. This is a delightful book, and a tribute to these wonderful women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neighbors as teachers
I enjoyed this book because it's the story of so many women's stories: nurturing to many and being a good neighbor. None of these women thought themselves worthy of a memoir because they led and still lead "normal" lives and were just doing what they were supposed to do: be respectful, be humble, be truthful, be genreous, be loyal, be caring, be loving to one another.Ms. Ansberry writes well of ordinary lives that makes you think they are extraordinary. One line that I recall was that, "men worked, but women neighbored." Oh, to have neighborhoods that care and teach us like this! ... Read more

Product Description

From Donna VanLiereÂ--the author of the beloved Christmas Hope seriesÂ--comes a moving novel of faith, family, and destiny.

You might think that what you're about to read has a great deal to do with my father and growing up poor in east Tennessee, but there is so much moreÂ--what captured my heart was the hope of belonging and the dream of family.  The woman I am has a great deal to do with that ninth year of my life.  It started out as any other year, nothing extraordinary, but as each day unfolded it became remarkable in every way.  There are times when I'm still amazed we made it through.  It has been said that every life has a story.  This is my storyÂ…--From the Prologue

Jane Gable thinks 1947 will be like every other year in Morgan Hill, Tennessee but but it's the year everything changes.  Jane first lays eyes on young Milo Turner the day that her abusive, alcoholic father is buried in the Morgan Hill cemetery. The Turners are the first black family ever to move into the area, and while their presence challenges the comfort of many in the small, tight-knit community, Jane and her brother, John, have found new friends.

Then tragedy strikes the Turner household, and the Gable family is asked to make a decision that could rip their world apart. One path might open up a whole new world and bring them closer than ever.  Or it might bring them nothing but trouble and heartache.  On their journey, Jane discovers that angels are all around us, every day, in the most extraordinaryÂ--and ordinaryÂ--ways.

The Angels of Morgan Hill is filled with unforgettable characters who show us the ways and means of the heart and prove that even in the darkest hours, we are never truly alone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Angels of Morgan Hill audio book
Because I've read other Donna VanLiere books, I had looked forward to listening to one on audio book while driving.I was very disappointed. The initial obstacle was that the author read it.I'm a Californian, so I have difficulty understanding a strong, Southern accent, which is what the reader has.The story itself left unanswered questions at the end.It built up and up and then seemed to abruptly end.Perhaps I would have felt differently had the narration not been so difficult for me.I'll still continue to read Mrs. VanLiere's books. This one probably was not her best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I had never read anything by this author and actually stumbled upon it by accident.Something about
the title caught my eye. I am so glad I picked it up.This story takes the reader back to a simplier time, though harder time.My grandparents lived in a small town that reminded me so much of Morgan Hill. Be warned it is a tear jerker but you also come away with a smile on your face wishing that towns, neigbors and families were still that caring and giving to one another.
Highly recommend and I will be finding other books by Donna VanLiere.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Put It Down!
I stumbled onto this book by accident, but once I started it, I couldn't put it down! I cried, laughed, and cried some more as I hurried to get to the next page. The racism of this era addressed in this story is truthful, and just as in that day, it was those who had nothing that gave the most. Not too heavy or too sappy, this is an excellent book, and I loved every page of it!I will read everything I can get by Donna VanLiere!

4-0 out of 5 stars Angels of Morgan Hill
A delightful little book, good heartwarming story
filled with lessons for life Made your heart sensitive to each character in the story

4-0 out of 5 stars Identifying the Angels Around You
I picked up this book because of the word Angels in the title, knowing nothing about the author or her other works. After the opening paragraph, however, I was hooked.

Set in Tennessee during the 1950s, Jane Gable (the 9-year old narrator) tells the story of the day her daddy was buried and how she and her younger brother saw their first black family. Through humorous anecdotes of life in the South, we learn of the contempt of some for the 'colored' sharecroppers and how far these folks would go to get rid of them. When Milo (the young black child) loses his family in a fire, it is Jane's pregnant mother who takes him in as she tries to keep a deathbed promise to Milo's mother. Through trials and tribulation, Jane's mother stands firm in her resolve but it is Jane herself that pushes the town to action when she refuses to attend school because Milo isn't allowed into an all-white school. What happens after that is purely heartwrenching and heartwarming at the same time.

A captivating read that will have some reaching for the tissue box. This work deserves four and a half stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Journal for 9 to 12 year old boys!
I bought this book in 1999 to help my eight year old son work through the mixed emotions, grief, and spiritual journey he was having over the death of his four year old sister.

The journal was a remarkable tool! Finding elementary-aged tools to help children isolate, articulate, and work through the gamut of feelings that come from any type of loss is difficult. And, in my opinion, I have not yet seen this books equal.

Every couple ofpages address a different emotion. There are promptings to help the child think about how they feel about each specific emotion as well as scripture verses to give encouragement in those areas as well. Some topics are "My Journey through Saddness", "My Journey through Anger", and "My Journey through Friendship".

I found this journal very helpful and still have our son's tucked away with the precious memorabilia of his childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational journey for this 50 year old.
"My Faith Journal" was originally purchased as a gift for my 9 year old secret pal.As I gleaned its pages I too began to reflect on its prompts for faith milestones. This journal was obviously written for9-12 year olds and its illustrations soften otherwise scary memories and helps make it easier to journal responses to the prompts included on each page. The book is published in two cover formats (one for a girl and one for a boy).I bought several of each and have since sent them as gifts for a new single mom and her infant son; my secret pal who has leukemia (he is 9 years old); a little girl who has a new baby sister; newlyweds; and I am keeping a few for my own grandchildren."My Faith Journal" will prove invaluable for our church confirmation classesthis new year and for our children's choir, too. This book will help some children conquer the monsters in their lives with the stroke of a pen.I highly recommend this book for children and the little child in each of us.The journaling will help us conquer the big monsters that hide inside us all. ... Expressing Silence is words unspoken given to tell of moments in life that occurred directly and indirectly. The introvert state allows the build up of explosive emotions to be expressed without vengeance, without regret, and without resentment. The words of this book will allow ease to the soul as years of undeclared speech that was forbidden is now laid to rest in this book to be read. When the pen wrote of painful storms brewing of the experiences in life, words became the outlet to calm the mind and look forward to the next day being of joy.As the child has become a woman, and destiny controlled by one and not many, the day no longer felt hopeless, but full of possibilities. The rain of happiness lingered after the storm of frustration, anger, pain, and misunderstanding was released and died. ... Read more

I do believe this book speaks of all the possibilities in life, the questions asked about fate and destiny, the young mind trying to understand the world and the soul searching for the meaning of life. Excerpt: The Soul2Soul II Tour was the second co-headlining concert tour between country music singers, and husband and wife, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Beginning as the Soul2Soul II Tour 2006, its shows featured elaborate production values using an open, cross-shaped stage. Performances consisted of a set by Hill and set by McGraw, with the two sharing duets before, during, and after the individual sets. Over the course of the show, the duets traced a thematic development starting at estrangement and ending in emotional closeness. The tour capitalized on McGraw and Hill's popularity, both as musical artists and as a couple. It played 74 shows in 56 cities, and sold 1.1 million tickets. The tour grossed almost $89 million during 2006. For the year, it was the third-highest grossing tour in North America (behind The Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang Tour and Barbra Streisand's Streisand: The Tour); and the fifth-highest grossing tour in the world for 2006. Soul2Soul II Tour 2006 became the highest-grossing country music tour of all time, a position it still holds as of December 2007. For its accomplishments, it received Pollstar's top Concert Industry Award, the Major Tour of the Year Award, for 2006. The tour was then continued the following year, as the rebranded Soul2Soul 2007. Some new songs were added to the set list, but the overall structure and theme of the show remained. Soul2Soul 2007 grossed some $52 million. Together, the McGraw-Hill Soul2Soul tour has the highest gross for any multi-year country music tour ever, $141 million, breaking a mark previously held by Garth Brooks. Over 1.6 million people saw the show over its two years. The tour's name was a reprise of the co...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4827033 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable touch to a timeless story
Sunrise Hill is a picture book that commemorates the Christian holiday of Easter. When a town works to build a church in time for Easter Sunday, yet loses all their hard work to a sudden disaster, it takes the wisdom of a young boy to understand that the "real" Easter church is not a building, but rather the faith of the people themselves. The beautiful and warmly colored artwork of Rick Johnson provides Kathleen Long Bostrom's wonderful text with the feel of slightly blurred photographs which add an unforgettable touch to a timeless story. ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Herewith is a detailed discography for the American country music artist Faith Hill. During her career, Hill has released 6 studio albums and two compilation albums, with 41 singles on the Billboard Country Chart. After working as a secretary in a Nashville music publishing firm, Hill recorded a demo tape and was signed to Warner Bros. Records. She released her debut album in late 1993 titled, Take Me as I Am. The album sold three million copies in the United States and was certified "multi-platinum" in sales. With Hill's first albums, she was largely marketed as a country artist and her singles found major success on country radio. The lead single, "Wild One" spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Country Chart that year, making Hill the first female country artist in thirty years spend a series of weeks at the top spot with a debut single. The album's additional singles, "Piece of My Heart" (a cover of the Janis Joplin song) and "Take Me as I Am" were also significant country hits. ... Read more

Excerpt: Faith Hill (born Audrey Faith Perry; September 21, 1967) is an American country singer. She is known both for her commercial success and her marriage to fellow country star Tim McGraw. Hill's voice (described as both soulful and raspy) and careful song selection have helped her to sell more than 40 million records and accumulate 8 number-one singles and 3 number-one albums on the Country charts. Hill has been honored by the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music, the Grammy Awards, the American Music Awards and the People's Choice Awards. Her Soul2Soul II Tour 2006 with husband McGraw became the highest-grossing country tour of all time. In 2001, she was named one of the "30 Most Powerful Women in America" by Ladies Home Journal. In 2008, Faith Hill released her first Christmas album, titled Joy to the World. Hill was born Audrey Faith Perry in Richland, Mississippi, near Jackson, Mississippi. She was adopted as an infant and raised by a couple in the nearby town of Star. Her adoptive parents reared their two biological sons along with Hill in a devout Christian environment. Hill's vocal talent was apparent early, and she had her first public performance, a 4-H luncheon, when she was seven. In 1976, a few days before her 9th birthday, she attended a concert by Elvis Presley at the State Fair Coliseum, in Jackson, which impressed her deeply. By the time she was a teenager, Hill was a regular performer at area churches, even those not in her own Baptist denomination. At 17, Hill formed a band that played in local rodeos. She briefly attended college at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi, but at 19 quit school to move to Nashville and pursue her dream of being a country singer.
