Product Description
Broadband in the Metro Area has proven to be telecom's one bright spot in 2001 – all the long haul backbone capacity in the world does you no good if you can't move your data through the Metro bottleneck. But service providers are wrestling with all manner of technology choices (SONET? DWDM? Ethernet? The coming 10Gig Ethernet?), and also face the challenge of easily and effectively accessing SANs and VPNs. Quality of service issues are crucial in recruiting and maintaining customers

Steven Shepard lays bare the tricks and traps awaiting service providers in the metro area space, detailing the technological challenges and opportunities in his trademark lucid, humorous prose. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The HottestArea of PSTN development Is Well Examined
Like Shepard's other tomes, this book does a great job of addressing the one area of today's public network that's not only a source of contention (pun intended), but also the area that's undergoing the most radical evolution in the early 21st century.

As someone who works for a major Bell company product managing a metro Ethernet product, I can tell you that Shepard examines the activity in this space perfectly. MANs are the hot area right now, as carriers cope with how to address the bottleneck that exists between legacy transport technologies (i.e. DS-n) and the near-infinite capacity of today's long-haul networks (thanks to DWDM). If you're looking for an understanding of how this area is being addressed, this is the right book. And Steve's usual conversational, not-too-technical writing style make it all the better.I strongly recommend this book. It's relevant !! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
This is a terrible book: don't waste your money. As an example, here is one sample question from the numeric entry section, where the answer is COMPLETELY WRONG.
The question:
"If -7 <= x <= 5 and -3 <= y <= 4, what is the greatest possible value of (y - x)(x + y)?"

Their idiotic answer, quoted exactly:
"The correct answer is 99. Because you are looking for the greatest value of (y-x)(x+y), your goal is to make x + y as big as possible and y - x as big as possible. Therefore, use x=5 and y=4 to get x + y = 9, and x = -7 and y = 4 to get y - x = 11. The greatest value of (y - x)(x + y) is (9)(11) = 99."

Even a 12-year-old would know that is incorrect. Buy the Princeton Review or Kaplan. Don't waste your money or your time on this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrendous Book
This book is terrible.

As many other reviewers have pointed out - the questions are much easier than you'd see on the normal test.

Further, I've run into a few solutions on quant problems that are just objectively WRONG.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book will make you do worse
This book was of no help at all.The score I got on the GRE, which was average, had NOTHING to do with this book and EVERYTHING to do with this book.I say it had NOTHING to do with this book because it is the score I probably would have got had I not used this book at all.The examples and tests in this book were way too easy.On the practice tests, I was scoring in the 700 range. When I took the actual test, it only took me a few questions to realize the real test was much harder than this book.I say this book had EVERYTHING to do with my only average score because the easy practice tests lured me into a false sense of security.Had I known the actual test was much harder, I would have studied more and done better. So in that sense, I did worse because of this book.

Besides not being sufficiently difficult, the book also has poor explanations of its easy examples. Here is a typical example of an antonym question from one of the practice tests:

PRAGMATIC:
(A) ample
(B) sensible
(C) impractical
(D) astute
(E) exiguous

Here is the explanation:

"The best answer is C. The word pragmatic means 'practical,' whereas the word impractical means 'not capable of being put to use.' Therefore, impractical is most nearly opposite in meaning to pragmatic."

First of all, that question is much easier than most questions on the GRE.Second, the explanation doesn't explain any of the wrong answers.Third, it goes on to give a cryptic explanation of the easy word "impractical" just in case "impractical" wasn't an obvious antonym for "practical."This is typical of the book.

Another flaw is it only gives 30 minutes for the math section while you get 45 minutes on the actual exam. The fact that the writer didn't know such an important component of the exam raises questions on his qualifications to write such a book.Furthermore, I was able to complete the easy practice tests with five minutes to spare on each section, while on the actual test, I was finishing just in time.

The about the author section says, "Steve scored in the 99th percentile on every standardized test he has ever taken."Was the GRE was one of those tests?Following his own advice, I doubt he would get over 500 on each section.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a great way to prepare
Just thought I'd echo the comments of some of the other reviewers--far too easy compared to the actual test and inexplicably has math section at 30 minutes instead of 45.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hikes and Walks in the Berkshire Hills
The guide is clear and descriptive. It provides levels of difficulty as well as a time table for each hike or walk.I recomend it to anyone who will be visiting the Berkshires for extended periods of time and really enjoys getting outside.Great for those who live in Boston or other urban areas of eastern Massachusetts and want to explore the other side of the state on weekends.
There is one complaint. In my opinion the walks in the book are a waste of space. They may be suitable for the disabled or catch the eye of the wealthy that visit Stockbridge and Lenox..But overall a joke...
If you are not great with maps and figuring out your own hikes from topo then this is your book...Your only book... The William College Outing Club in Williamstown, Massachusetts also has a nice guide.I believe you can get it over the internet thru the college website. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for quick reviews!
this book is absolutely wonderful to have on hand as a quick reference.I recommend this to everyone....thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
Third year can be really hard and I didn't realize that students are expected to sort of figure things out for themselves. That can be hard if you aren't even sure what you don't know.I am a smart person, but I was at a loss for some really basic things. It looked bad. Then! I found this book and let me tell you I felt like I had found the key to the magic garden.Or more acurately, that I had found a buoy on a dark and stormy night.I honestly had thought I was going to drown.

I learned my notes/h&p's, differential diagnoses, medications, ekg's, chest x-rays, ICU vent settings and devices, surgical knots, fluids and electrolytes, laboratory diagnosis, micro - ok, you get the picture. It completely changed how I learned and did things.I carried it everywhere, and proudly too.A good book is like your best friend, solid, reliable and full of good advice. This book is the best, and I absolutely love it.I expect to carry it with me for the next few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but a little too big
I found out about this book my second month as an intern. I wish I had known about it when I was a med student. It has basic review of disease processes, lab interpretation, procedures, and a drug reference. The procedure descriptions and illustrations are probably the best of any reference I have seen. The only problem is that it's a little too big to use as a pocket reference. I keep it in my on-call bag.

4-0 out of 5 stars just a bit too big
I really have found this book useful, but it will weigh you down and hurt your aerodynamics.I liked the sections on labs and differentials as a 3rd year, and found the procedure walkthroughs to be useful as a 4th year. For residency I plan to go completely with the PDA.

4-0 out of 5 stars very handy manual
i found your book excellent in bedside procedures and normal values but unfortunately i have not found enough guides in clinical pictures (diagnosis)and full investigations for separate disease entities to help inquery bizzareclinical presentations in our wards ... Read more

Product Description
In the wake of the 2000 election crisis, a proposal for making election outcomes reflect all Americans
Winners take all in the vast majority of American elections, leaving those who voted for losing candidates without representation in government, and disillusioned with politics. Robert Richie and Steven Hill argue that we need a new way of electing our representatives to combat voter apathy and the leveling of political views. Such a system already exists in many parts of the world, including some places in the U.S.: proportional representation.

"The only reason we don't have proportional representation in the United States is that it hadn't been invented yet when the Constitution was written. But the Founding Fathers would have loved it. This book tells why--in language that's lively, accessible, provocative, and full of common sense." —Hendrik Hertzberg

Leading activists and scholars, including Cynthia McKinney, John Ferejohn, and Daniel Cantor, respond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice intro
This book provides a superb foundation for further study. Some prior background in optics as well as electronics (especially semiconductors) is needed, though the background need not be especially deep. The math isn't especially difficult either.Anyone with a moderate technical/mathematical background can learn something from this book.

I have to apologize if this review sounds vague -- but the book is just a nice broad intro to a subject that I personally find very interesting (though I'm not a EE).So if you'd like to know more about LEDs, lasers, polarizers, lenses, atc., etc., and how they all fit together -- this is a great place to start.

Unfortunately, it seems to be out of print -- it doesn't have the latest developments -- but I would strongly recommend it in used form as a very good introduction. It always amazes (and saddens) me when such well written and approachables books fall into disfavor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and informative
This is a wonderful introductory book. It's fairly short - this is not one of those texts that has so much information in it that you get overwhelmed; if you want a really in-depth book on the subject, this isn't it - but you might want to read this one before you rush out to buy the eighteen-pound monster. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in self-study. I wish there were more introductory texts this easy to read and inexpensive. ... Read more

From the supplier: The US economy has been lauded by many international business leaders as the most competitive in the industrialized world for paradoxical reasons. This competitiveness has been attained at the price of low wages, limited worker benefits and deregulation. Furthermore, the gap between what a CEO is paid and what a factory worker earns appears to be widest in the US. The CEO is paid about 150 times more than the worker.

Product Description
A lively dialogue on the power of electoral reform to strengthen our democratic institutions

Scholars, critics, reformers, politicians, and activists have for years asked why Americans are so uninvolved in the political process. Minority underrepresentation, the marginalization of progressive voices, the exclusion of the poor—these and other serious problems appear everywhere, from the pages of national newspapers to MTV.
Robert Richie and Steven Hill offer a powerful solution, one currently in practice in many parts of the world, including places in the U.S.: proportional representation. They demonstrate that unlike the winner-takes-all system, which always leaves the losers completely unrepresented, proportional representation gives all points of view a political voice; it works by giving citizens multiple votes or the right to vote for more than one candidate, or by giving political parties power according to percentages of votes received.

Esteemed thinkers—Cynthia McKinney, John Ferejohn, E. Joshua Rosenkrantz, Gary W. Cox, Daniel Cantor, Ross Mirkarimi, Anthony Thig penn, and Pamela S. Karlan—respond in essays discussing the forms proportional representation could take to operate best in the U.S. Their contributions underscore the concept at the heart of this book: the more people invested in the political process, the more democratic—and reflective of all of us—our system becomes.

Product Description
Together with important First Nations material, the Thomson Canadian Collection is the largest of all private holdings of Canadian art. Ten essays by authorities on Northwest Coast art, Cornelius Krieghoff, James Wilson Morrice, Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven painters Frederick Varley, Lawren Harris and J. E. H. MacDonald, as well as David Milne, Paul-Emile Borduas and William Kurelek, explore in depth and breadth centuries of artistic achievement in Canada.

Rare and incomparable examples of Northwest Coast Aboriginal art in the Thomson Collection of Canadian art are distinctive in their design vocabulary and rich in symbolic meaning. Krieghoff's inspired accounts of life in the Canadas, prior to Confederation, bring the light and atmosphere of history fully into the present. A staggering power to capture the fleeting and the fugitive in paint still distinguishes the work of the early 20th-century painter, Morrice. By comparison, Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven loaded their brushes with the raw pigment of the Canadian wilderness to set the enduring standard of Canadian landscape art. Milne, and then Borduas, remain international leaders of experimental painterly practice. Kurelek, by contrast, painted the story of his life with unparallelled intensity and individuality. Altogether these artists tell the rich story of the country Ken Thomson called home. ... Read more
