Product Description
Because prior studies of American women’s travel writing have focused exclusively on middle-class and wealthy travelers, it has been difficult to assess the genre and its participants in a holistic fashion. One of the very few surviving working-class travel diaries, Lorenza Stevens Berbineau’s account provides readers with a unique perspective of a domestic servant in the wealthy Lowell family in Boston. Staying in luxurious hotels and caring for her young charge Eddie during her six-month grand tour, Berbineau wrote detailed and insightful entries about the people and places she saw.

Contributing to the traditions of women’s, diary, and travel literature from the perspective of a domestic servant, Berbineau's narrative reveals an arresting and intimate outlook on both her own life and the activities, places, and people she encounters. For example, she carefully records Europeans’ religious practices, working people and their behavior, and each region’s aesthetic qualities. Clearly writing in haste and with a pleasing freedom from the constraints of orthographic and stylistic convention, Berbineau offers a distinctive voice and a discerning perspective. Alert to nuances of social class, her narrative is as appealing and informative to today's readers as it no doubt was to her fellow domestics in the Lowell household.

Unobtrusively edited to retain as much as possible the individuality and texture of the author’s original manuscript, From Beacon Hill to the Crystal Palace offers readers brief framing summaries, informative endnotes, and a valuable introduction that analyzes Berbineau’s narrative in relation to gender and class issues and compares it to the published travel writing of her famous contemporary, Harriet Beecher Stowe. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Blatant errors and typos make this book unusable
I work at a tutoring office which uses this book, among many other test-prep guides. Let me just give an example of the frequency of errors in this book.

On one of the practice tests, I assigned my student 15 pseudo-random problems (all of them dealt vaguely with geometry). When we went back and discussed the questions, 8 of those 15 questions had errors varying degrees of severity.

- One question had the same answer choice written twice, with the correct answer not available.
- Four questions had completely incorrect answers. That is not to say that the answer choices had typos. Rather, the explanations in the back derived answers that were incorrect.
- Other questions had used non-standard (and incorrect) terminology. For instance, one question asked "What is the corresponding acute angle of a 110º angle?". This use of "corresponding" (as a replacement for supplementary) is completely wrong.
- Some questions had multiple correct answer choices. For instance, a questions asking which choice was an obtuse triangle had two obtuse triangles as answer choices.

Anyone who bought this book should probably try to get a refund. Based on the huge number of not-so-subtle errors in one test, let alone the whole book, this book is more harmful than helpful for test preparation.

1-0 out of 5 stars GLARING ERRORS IN BOOK.
I bought this for brother who is taking ACT. We were going over his answers in one of the math practice tests. Many of the choices (A,B,C,D) did not correlate to the question posed.Furthermore, explanations were incorrect and inaccurate.Luckily, we were going over the answers together and found these mistakes. He has gotten several correct once we reviewed.Bad proofreading and flat out incorrect answers found frequently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
We bought this and donated it to the school where I son attended. He said that it was very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ACT Prep!
This book is simply amazing! The practice questions are extremely helpful! The strategies and study techniques helped to improve my son's ACT score immensely!Kudos to the authors of this book, it literally saved us!Thank you!

4-0 out of 5 stars A well written study guide
While prepping for the ACT I used many books, however McGraw-Hill's guide stands out from the others (princeton review etc) because it is so well written. There are tons of practice problems in the book which I found extremely helpful. Practice is the only guaranteed technique to improve your ACT/SAT score, and that's where many of the competitors fall short. The Real ACT book by the makers of the test was also an excellent buy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of errors
Ok book overall, but really not very insightful, no shortcuts, just simple math everyone already knows how to do.And lots of simple errors to boot.Lame.

1-0 out of 5 stars WORST.GRE.PREP-BOOK.EVER.
The first clue that this book is a miserable excuse for a GRE prep-book is that all of the practice tests have the wrong time limit on the Math section. It's clear the authors have not adequately researched the GRE exam. In addition to the errors contained in the book, the level of difficulty of the questions is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than Kaplan, Princeton Review, and the ETS official preparation materials. The practice exams and scores are not an accurate reflection of how you will do on the GRE. Save yourself money and time and DO NOT buy this book. Kaplan and my personal favorite, Priceton Review, are far superior.

1-0 out of 5 stars The others have said it all; but I still have one important point to add
The others have said it all: this publication is full of errors. But if you're still considering a purchase, let me drive home one more point. The author(s) of this guide aren't only careless (in that they make errors), but in cases where they don't even know how to answer a question, they're actually daring enough to attempt to get by with absolutely stupid answers. A case in point on page 138 will show you exactly what attitude they're displaying. The question reads:

If -7<=x<=5, and -3<=y<=4, what is the greatest possible value of (y-x)(x+y)?

And here goes the 'answer' found on page 139: use x=5 and y=4 to get x+y=9, and x=-7 and y=4 to get y-x=11. The greatest value is therefore 99. Excuse me? So does an 'x' mean an 'x'? I can't imagine even a prep school kid committing this kind of 'error'. Can't help but think the authors have no clue how to answer the question and what they did instead is to BS us.

[BTW, the clue is to realize that (y-x)(x+y)= y(sq) - x(sq). ]

1-0 out of 5 stars A book full of mistakes...
First off, I rarely write a negative review for a product. However, this is by far the worst review book that I have ever seen.

I recently acquired this book for a quick review of upcoming GRE exam.Unfortunately, there are some serious flaws with this review book:(1) I found so many mistakes all over the book, from exercise to actual practice exams.(By the way, there are more mistakes in math than verbal). To be more precise, there are three practice exams, and all three math answer keys contain mistakes.(2) Some of the questions have very poor wording...

Anyway, if you happen to get a lower-than-expect math score on its practice exam, be sure to double-check the answer(s).It is very likely that the answer key was wrong to begin with...

FYI, McGraw-Hill publishing company will not refund money, unless you order the book directly from them.Otherwise, you will have to take it back to the location of initial purchase.

I don't understand how could this book be released. Many students build up their confidence by taking practice exams from review books.Unfortunately, this book actually breaks students' confidence...

1-0 out of 5 stars NUMEROUS ERRORS
Do not buy this book! The number of errors is unreal, at least one per section. The anwer keys don't match up with question explanations. This is definitely NOT a confidence-builder, which is what I need prior to taking the GRE. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Errors
This book is very frustrating. There are many errors in the practice Math section that make it difficult for someone who is trying to brush up on their math skills to follow. There are also a fair number of errors in the practice tests on the CD as well. Not to mention that the program errors out sometime when you go from section to section, forcing you to start from scratch.

Very disappointing and unacceptable for a book that costs $32. Save your time and money and buy a different prep book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book.
Like said in some of the previous reviews, this book has so many errors that it is neer useless. The math sections have problems that have incorrect answers, incorrect wording, some questions even have answers that are not even to that question, and some parts of the answer sections are completely missing. Some of the answer guides completely break mathmatical rules, such as multiplication before addition, rendering their answers completely wrong. The cd that comes with this book has running problems also, I book an entire practice test (over three hours of work) and got an error when I finished and was going to view the results. This happend twice before I gave up. I state again, do not waiste your money on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The strategies were very helpful. The author clearly knows the exam and cares about student success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
The strategies and techniques in this book are excellent! My son's ACT score improved significantly!!The practice questions are spot-on!We are forever grateful to the authors of this terrific book!Wonderful, thank you so much!

2-0 out of 5 stars multiple errors but still solid advice
I bought this book in preparation for an upcoming ACT test only to find that even in just the Diagnostic Assessment Test there were numerous errors. I was bewildered by the thought that there was actually a test prep book out there with information that can easily mislead the average person. But even though the questions may be faulty themselves, the book still does contain advice that can help improve one's ACT scores. ... Read more

I was a little hesitant in purchasing this item as there were only 2 reviews. I thought it was an interesting concept and thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did! This is a neat way of learning the words. It is for audio AND visual learners! I love that I can hear the words in sentences. I think this will really help with the GRE!

1-0 out of 5 stars Unusable
I mistakenly assumed that this book would help me study for the GRE based on its title, size, and claims about its efficacy on the back cover. After studying with the book for about an hour, I found two really bad errors and one serious typo in the math section, not to mention the odd wording of some of the questions. Some of the sample verbal questions seem more ambiguous than they should be in a standardized test, and the provided explanations aren't always convincing.

I'm sure a lot of the content is perfectly correct, but because of the many errors, I can't afford to trust any of it. I'm just glad I didn't spend money on this book--it's going back to the library first thing in the morning.

Example reasoning error (p.139): "Because you are looking for the greatest value of (y-x)(x+y), your goal is to make x+y as big as possible and y-x as big as possible. Therefore, use x=5 and y=4 to get x+y=9, and x=-7 and y=4 to get y-x=11. The greatest value of (y-x)(x+y) is (9)(11) = 99."

1-0 out of 5 stars Book FILLED with errors- do not purchase
This book is awful. I purchased it recently to prepare myself for the GRE and have found so many errors, it's appalling. When they provide you with equations to find the distance of a line - they have it WRONG. When doing the practice math questions, if you turn the page to the answer section - they have a completely different problem than the one you were trying. Example:
page 202 #3 in the "Exponents" section. The problem is written as 2(^2) + 2(^3) = ?
Then when you turn to page 207 to check the answers the equations is written as 2(^2) x 2(3). Which yields a MUCH different answer than the original equation. Addition vs multiplication greatly affects the outcome.

This can greatly affect your studying and your ability to do well on the GRE.

I have contacted McGraw Hill and they said they are aware of the errors in the book - they refuse to recall it, but for an additional $25 you can purchase the 2010 edition which allegedly corrects those errors.

Kaplan & Princeton Revew books are much better - check them out instead. ... Read more

Product Description
This original study applies the philosophical/theological thought of Thomas Aquinas to issues of environmental ethics, specifically in relation to the restoration and preservation of the plains of the Loess Hills in Iowa. This study should appeal to scholars working in environmental ethics, philosophy, theology, and ecology. This work applies an environmental ethic grounded in an interpretation of Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae to a particular environmental region, namely the Loess Hills of Iowa. The book begins by telling the ecological story of the Loess Hills and then proceeds to summarize the development of environmental ethics through the legacy of Henry David Thoreau, thereby revealing certain tensions that exist in contemporary environmental debates. Then, after considering the strengths and weaknesses of anthropocentric and ecocentric ethical systems, the author provides an exposition of Aquinas' understanding of the bonum naturalis, the bonum connaturalis, and the bonum supernaturalis, as these are found in the Summa Theologiae. From these a eudaimonistic ethic emerges: human communities ought to pursue flourishing only in ways that simultaneously save the contextualizing ecosystems. This ethic is then applied to the particular case of the Loess Hills, producing an eudaimonistic ecoregionalism. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars With JAVA background - you should be fine.
With some java background, using XML Complete to learn XML is not a bad idea. The programs are well written. I do have some compilation errors with some of the programs; but with a little fix you're good to go.

1-0 out of 5 stars I renamed this book "XML Complete CRAP"
After reading through this book, I was so thoroughly disgusted that I took the time to print out a new title, "XML Complete CRAP", and tape it to the spine of this book.I even matched the color and the font exactly! Why did I spend an hour of my time doing this?Because I wanted to save my co-workers the effort of pulling this ridiculous book off our bookshelf and opening it.This book is a "complete" joke. The writing is muddled, the layout and font are awful, and the examples are repeatedly copied and pasted to fluff up the book and make it look respectable.I would be astonished if there was a worse book out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's a mirage
I read this book cover to cover before I took out the CD.What could besimpler - just download the parser and off you go.No it didn't work likethat. The parser isn't on the Microsoft site in that form and without itthe book is a waste of time. I find it amazing that a book like this can bewritten that fails on the most fundamental point - the basic tools aren'tincluded.

1-0 out of 5 stars BAD
What was the author thinking i mean the book just talks about java infact one whole chapter i brought the book to learn XML and it doesn't teach youthat it teaches you more java then XML.

1-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the worst computer book I have ever read
This book is bad on so many levels, it's hard to know where to begin. The typesetter was clearly drunk, as evidenced by the unreadable spacing andinconsistent typefaces used in the code samples. The code samplesthemselves were often either useless, or just flat-out wrong. The Javacode was not only completely extraneous, it was hideously bad, throwing outany semblance of style or normal coding conventions. The XML grammaritself was presented in difficult-to-read snippets of BNF notation, whichis an incredibly irritating way to try to learn new concepts.I think theauthor must have been cutting and pasting from the w3c spec.

It doesn'teven seem worth pointing out that much of the information in the book islong out of date.

Just unspeakably wretched.Buy any other XML book, orbuy none. You'd be better off. ... Read more

Product Description
Poetry. "If, as Robert Browning once wrote, 'God is the perfect poet who in his person acts his own creations,' then Steve Ostrowski's poetry is one of those creations made manifest. Imbued with quietude and divinity, sparked by the unremittingly human, these poems take on the difficult, crucial task of making meaning in a world that satirizes and cannibalizes itself, never flinching from the ad absurdum nature of language and contemporary life, while maintaining an intrepid belief in the redemptive power of love. In a climate where too many poems with sparkling surfaces drift like flotsam past awareness, these are poems of substance and intentionality, borne from the idllys of childhood, the charge of being a devoted husband and father, the unasked-for task of carrying on the secret imperatives passed on to us from our ancestors, and Ostrowski manages to explore such fundamental subjects with characteristic wit and panache'"--Ravi Shankar. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!
The book seems incoherent, repetitive, almost like glued together with materials from different sources? If the author understand the subject, he is not communicating.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $$$ or the time to read it -
I give this book 1 Star because I have no option. There is nothing lower. I consider it a waste of a star, IMHO. Read several of the one star ratings below and you will get an accurate assessment of this book. If you wish to persist in your folly, or if you feel lucky that you may be able to withdraw value from this book - be sure to order it at a Barnes & Noble first... You'll just need to peruse the first 3 chapters. and then I recommend you take your winnings and spend them at the Starbucks Coffee Bar - a much wiser use of your money. -also, be sure to investigate Patrick Sweeney's "RFID for Dummies" - you'll still have plenty of money left over for the coffee bar and worthwhile informative reading to boot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, something to help my clients.
RFID is a technology, so most authors write like they want to play with it. In other words, other authors write to impress how much they know about a technology. I am in the training business. My job is to explain it so my clients understand. Steve has done this in his book. After reading Steve's book, I am able to explain the application of the technology. After all, lots of technology is cool, but cool doesn't make money, understanding does. Steve's book is right on the mark. Thanks Steve.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the cash.
If you want a fluffy, executive-level overview of RFID, save yourself $60 and read an inflight magazine article about it. This book's relevant content is about the same.

Fully 1/3 of the book is taken up by a glossary and a list of acronyms, both of which are very clearly regurgitated from previously-published material. The author didn't even bother to cull out the terms that are utterly not relevant to the topic, not mentioned in the text, and not interesting to the target audience. To further pad the book, it's printed with large type on thick paper, with photos of things like container ships to illustrate such highly technical points as "container ships are big." The price is bulked up by adding a hardcover binding, which is inappropriate for a book of this type.

It's obvious to me that this book was a moneymaker for the publisher because they could get it on the shelf fast, so anyone looking for ANY book on RFID wouldn't see much besides this one. You know why it was so quick to write? Because there isn't much actual content in it. Thank goodness there are a few other books on the shelf now, so others won't get stuck with this one like I did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive enough
After buying the book based on the reviews here, I found the book quite disappointing. It is long on providing historical perspective, appendices on terminology, acronyms and glossaries, but short on substance.

Technology coverage is limited to low-level communication protocols and the standard OSI 7-layer model. Those looking for integration of RFID into middleware, business applications and end-to-end architecture will find very little.

The size of the book is on the smaller side but uses a lot of print space for photos, which are not useful. Font size and paper thickness are also on the larger side. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as the handbook
I have both the calculations book by Brian McPartland and the NEC Handbook by Brian and his dad Joe. I prefer the handbook more, although you may want both. My problem with this book is that it was not proofed adequately for math errors and typos. I have found at least four computational errors in the examples.
I am not to impressed with this book because it does not take you too far beyond the examples already in the NEC or beyond the obvious. The explainations of why they are computing things the way they are (logic behind the computations) are all explained in the Handbook. Many of the examples are merely duplications of the handbook examples. If you want one good book, buy the Handbook. Don't waste money on the NEC handbooks published by NFPA. They merely waste space by quoting the NEC with some useless comments thrown in. McPartland is the only guy who has ever written a handbook worth having that goes in depth as to why the code is the way it is. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Marketing, 8th edition
There was some black tape on the cover, but besides that the book was in good condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars marketing w/powerweb

I ordered a new book. The book was not new and was a little dirty and had writing and marks inside. I needed the book and could not send it back because my class started. I could have save money and brought a used book but I thought I was getting a new book. Very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than described
I received the order well within the time stated. The book was advertised as like new, but it has never been used and was still in the plastic. The only problem I had was not being notified when the order was shipped, but the company quickly responded to my email letting me know when the book was shipped and how it was shipped. I would purchase from this vendor again should I have the need to.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!!!!
I bought this book for a marketing class that I had to cancel and retake at a later semester. So I threw it in the closet and didn't look at it. Mistake number 1. Now that I have this class and my first session is tomorrow night, I looked over the book to notice that it has "Fisher College of Business The Ohio State University" on the front. So I thought, thats kinda cool to that a college can get their name on it. Little did I realize that the book is custom printed. It's missing 6 chapters. Yes. You heard that correctly. SIX CHAPTERS! And now I'm kind a SOLed for tomorrow night. I have emailed the seller and I will repost here if they will help me out. SO moral of the story, beware of what you buy!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Buy
