Product Description
Homer: Poet of the "Iliad" is the perfect companion both for readers deepening their appreciation of the poem and its form and for those encountering Homer's work for the first time. Mark Edwards combines the advantages of a general introduction and a detailed commentary to make the insights of recent Homeric scholarship accessible to students and general readers as well as to classicists.

Since interpretation of the epic requires an understanding of the ancient oral tradition and its conventions, Edwards offers a comprehensive analysis of the poetics of the Iliad and the Odyssey. He also discusses essential elements of Homeric society -- its religion, history, and social values -- to clarify the style and substance of the poetry. In the second half of the book, Edwards's scene-by-scene explication of ten major books of the Iliad leads the reader to a greater perception of Homer's mastery and manipulation of convention. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A+ Mr. Homer! From Sharon Frame, Wired to Win! Empowerment Speaker

Bravo Mr. Homer!
Your book is an extremely useful and practical tool for college graduates entering the business world. It's a must-read for those serious about sure success.

Each chapter is steeped with action-oriented steps that are easy to understand and execute. Those wise enough to read this gem will learn critical corporate skills and boardroom politics not covered in college.

I highly recommend "From the Dorm Room to the Boardroom" to any college graduate who intends to fast-track their success and excel beyond the pack.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Highly Recommend This Book!
I have a lot of experience in the business world but know the tough transition that faces recent graduates. I had to learn most of this on my own while making many mistakes in the process. Now that I have a daughter graduating from college, and as all parents can relate, I know that they aren't going to listen to my advice, I decided to look for a book that would help them avoid many of the pitfalls I hit climbing the corporate ladder. I wanted a book from someone credible, as many of the books in this area seem to be written by twenty-something's themselves. I wanted a book from someone who had been there/done that. From the Dorm Room to the Boardroom fit the bill. Mr. Homer obviously has had much experience in the business world but the book doesn't talk "down to" a college student and is filled with great examples and specific action steps. I wish I had been given something like this when I first started out. A perfect read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dorm Room-Board Room - very good read!
I just finished reading this book. It was recommended by my co-worker. I have been out of the Dorm Room for a very long time but thought it might be a good book for a different perspective on the corporate world I'm in. The author does a very good job at detailing out experiences in the real world. I have been in the IT industry for over 11 years and currently I'm in Sales. This is an easy read and I will recommend this to any new coworkers coming out of college. I also have a niece and nephew that just started in the "Corporate World" and this is perfect for them. I sent the the link and now it's up to them. This would be a nice gift for anyone getting ready to graduate college or high school. READ ON!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for the recent graduate
I highly recommend this book, but this book is not just for a soon to be graduate. You can tell Mr. Homer has much experience in the business world and provides advice that would be a great reminder to anyone.I really like how he boils big concepts like networking and goal setting down to specific actions you can take each day.The recommendations are clearly stated, succinct and actionable. This is a must have for any graduate entering the business world, but it was useful reminder for me too, someone already with years of experience in the 'real world'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important Alchemical resources
With due respect to most others, and I've studied quite a few, this concise publication manages to cover and explain the theoretical basis of a vast and often-times enigmatic school of endeavor in a straight forward and comprehensible manner; clearly and without pomp.(the reader must, perhaps, forgive the pre-Leeuwenhoek explanation of how a petri dish of moist soil might mold). If you need more than this, you could read Pernety(the Great Art), at many times the price.(But worth it). In fact, Pernety quotes Kirchweger as a source.
Other classics (such as the much respected and dearly beloved Fra Albertus(the Alchemists Handbook), or the distant 'Junius')dabble in grain-boiling apparatus and thus become distracted from the luminous essentials. Paracelsus and Geber are technical and obscure. The massive Von Welling opus(Mago-Cabbalisticum et Theosophicum), while very impressive and quirky, will certainly take years to digest. And, oh yes; the Gothic and dark Evola text (Hermetic Tradition)over-examines the sinister. Finally, the Helmond treatise (Alchemy Unveiled)which is rife with anachronisms for a supposedly older text, as delightful as it is, quickly transmutes into other matters.
That leaves (the sort of pricey) Pernety and the truthful and modest Kirchweger (Golden Chain of Homer)(and possibly the Von Welling)as the most truly edifying texts on Alchemy. More books should be this affordable and sincere.

Product Description
The Simpsons is one of the most literary and intelligent comedies on television today—fertile ground for questions such as: Does Nietzsche justify Bart's bad behavior? Is hypocrisy always unethical? What is Lisa's conception of the Good?

From the editor of and contributors to the widely-praised Seinfeld and Philosophy, The Simpsons and Philosophy is an insightful and humorous look at the philosophical tenets of America's favorite animated family that will delight Simpsons fans and philosophy aficionados alike. Twenty-one philosophers and academics discuss and debate the absurd, hyper-ironic, strangely familiar world that is Springfield, the town without a state.

In exploring the thought of key philosophers including Aristotle, Marx, Camus, Sartre, Heidegger, and Kant through episode plots and the characters' antics, the contributors tackle issues like irony and the meaning of life, American anti-intellectualism, and existential rebellion. The volume also includes an episode guide and a chronology of philosophers which lists the names and dates of the major thinkers in the history of philosophy, accompanied by a representative quote from each.Amazon.com Review
No doubt Aristotle just rolled over in his grave. An essay called "Homer and Aristotle" would appear to be a treatise on two ancient Greek thinkers; in this case, it's a depiction of Homer Simpson's Aristotelian virtues. Raja Halwani's "Homeric" essay is amusing, though, and moreover, it actually ends up being enlightening, especially for those just learning Aristotle's ethics. Bart may be a Nietzschean without knowing it; Mr. Burns is a cipher for unhappiness (except when he eats "so-called iced-cream"); and Ned Flanders raises questions about neighborly love. The Simpsons and Philosophy has a lot to say about The Simpsons, and even more to say about philosophy.

The book collects 18 essays into an unpretentious, tongue-in-cheek, and surprisingly intelligent look at philosophy through the lens of Matt Groening's vaunted animated series. The editors are quick to point out that they don't think The Simpsons "is the equivalent of history's best works of literature ... but it nevertheless is just deep enough, and certainly funny enough, to warrant serious attention." The writers of the book are mostly professional philosophers, and they are appropriately erudite. But what is truly astonishing, even for a confessed Simpsons addict, is their breadth of Simpsons knowledge, spanning all 12 seasons of the show's history. The Simpsons and Philosophy is obviously not intended to be a turning point in modern thought, but it is an excellent introduction to some core elements of philosophy. --Eric de Place ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought
Guess I didn't read the review thoroughly because I bought this for high school students to read and its level is way above what I expected to be interesting and engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a Simpsons lover!
Bought this for my Simpson's fanatic boyfriend and he loved it!Great gift idea for the Simpsons fan in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
Funny for philosophy majors. If you are interested in the subject and love the Simpsons, than this is a great fun book to read. I got it for my dad, he loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good example of the relationship between pop culture and philosophy
I reread this book recently on my Kindle (had the original paperback) and found it still one of the best examples of how one can use pop culture to introduce a broader audience to philosophy. There is no denying that the Simpsons has been one of the best shows on American tv for the past couple of decades, and it is so intelligently done that pretty much every major issue in philosophy can be introduced by example, picking on the right Simpsons' episode or character. Of course, as always with edited books, the writing is uneven, with some chapters barely worth alook (the one on Heidegger, for instance). But the editors pulled this off very nicely nonetheless, and in fact the whole idea eventually flourished in a large series of available titles with a similar scope. The book could also be used in introductory philosophy classes to show the students the obvious truth: philosophy is highly relevant to everyday life, and it can even be fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interest in philosophy because of this book
I truly enjoyed reading this book even though I have some understanding regarding philosophy. However, after having read The Simpsons and Philosophy; it has sparked my interest in philosophy, particularly an interest in Frederick Nietzsche. As others have stated, if you have an interest or are familiar with philosophy combined with being a fan of the show; you will find that reading this book is worthy of your time.

FYI:
I did not get a chance to write a review at the time I purchased and read this book until now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive Fiestaware® and Harlequin® text.
This is the definitive text on Fiestaware®, Harlequin® and Kitchen Kraft. It was written for collectors by collectors (the combined efforts of the Homer Laughlin China Collectors Association.)

The book has insightful, smart and readable text that was reviewed by experts for accuracy. Each piece is illustrated with gorgeous, professional full-color photos, scale line drawings and details on its manufacture.

Homer Laughlin gave the authors unprecedented access to the original journals of Franklin Rhead, the original designer behind Fiestaware® and Harlequin®, and it shows.

This is more of a textbook than a guide.I find myself using it constantly. For Fiesta and Harlequin® collectors there is no equal.

5-0 out of 5 stars The *Definitive* Fiesta Reference Book
This book, by far and away, is THE BEST for the collector of Homer Laughlin colourware. It has an amazing amount of detail and answers almost every question a person could ask about the dishes named in the title.Measured line drawings are an invaluable help for both the novice and seasoned collector. And it is quite a treat to see photos of nearly every piece in all glaze colours.I found the price guide to be a major improvement over most, as each piece is priced individually by colour.

Readers are treated to a wonderfully accurate history of the dishes.Several rumours that have circulated among the collecting community over the years are laid to rest. The fact that the authors had access to both Frederick Rhead's journals and the HLC modeling logs resulted in a book that is sure to become "The Fiesta Bible".

It is quite refreshing to be able to consult a reference for information, and know that it is factual and free of some author's prejudice and innuendo. This particular book sets a new standard for what collectors' books should be.A MUST BUY!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Get the Huxford One First
This is a fine quality coffee table type book, with heavy paper and nice color reproduction. If you are an advanced collector who owns every book about Fiesta as well as every piece of Fiesta, you will want this book.

If you are a new collector who has absolutely no idea what any thing is, have no assortment of Fiesta to look at as you read and have no spatial visualization skills, you will want this book because it very pedantically gives every measurement every which way so that you can figure out that your plate that measures 9 5/8 inches is ... surprise commonly called the 9" luncheon plate, and not some "rare, unknown, experimental" due to that extra 5/8".In fact, if you are given to such flights of imagination, especially when pricing your items for sale, please buy this book.

If you are the average collector who falls in the middle, who has seen a set or two of Fiesta, or owns some already, who knows the difference between a bowl and a cup, the tried and true Huxford book, also out at this time in a new edition at about ... and in stock at ..., is the more standardly used alternative, and the one that all but the most novice collector would probably find the better value.

2-0 out of 5 stars Given the hype-
Given all the hype that has been sounded off about this book, I guess my expectations were far too high.I expected something that would make me throw away my Snyder book for the pictures, stop constantly using my Huxford for the information and become enraptured with this one... sorry folks. I found the "one item to a page" thing a little too overdone and self important.Really, MORE information on LESS pages at a LOWER cost would have been much preferred. At 39.95, it is unlikely that I will buy the next (inevitible) edition...- I mean, just how many photos of a single item, followed by a line drawing of the same item,do you need to see?... Huxfords have always kept prices at around $20 per each edition update.... at $40 I would rather buy a piece of Fiesta than (a second edition of) this book.If you can, buy it used or borrow it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide fro collecting Fiesta & harlequin
If you are a beginning collector of Fiesta, Harlequin or Kitchen Kraft, this book will be an excellent source of information, particularly with regard to colors, dimensions and marks, the most commomly asked questions. If you are a more advaned collector, there is still a wealth of information to be found in this reference. The inclusion of dimensions for each piece is a subtantial improvement over most collectors guides to dinnerware. An absolute must own for the Fiesta or Harlequin collector! ... Product Description
XML, the Extensible Markup Language, is a platform-independent language for describing data. The XML and related specifications, as well as the Document Object Model, have all been developed with language independence in mind. This was done to allow any programmer to use these powerful protocols and object models in their own language of choice, thus providing a huge development potential for the XML community and offering a myriad of opportunities to developers working with established technologies.

ASP has long been leading technology for server-side, dynamic web applications. And XML, as the newest markup language and a standard format for the universal sharing of data, is undoubtedly set to become an intrinsic part of all major development both on the Web, and in the wider business community. The next generation of web sites will inevitably combine these technologies as e-commerce matures and developers look for more efficient ways to integrate Internet presence with business systems. Amazon.com Review
Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) and the Extensible Markup Language (XML) are two of the hottest Web technologies, but each, because it is a complex topic in its own right, usually is documented individually. Professional ASP XML ties the two together in an important way, illustrating how to utilize them both to produce next-generation Web applications.

This product of several Wrox authors shows how and where XML fits in with ASP development, and whets the reader's appetite for creative solutions to typical data-handling problems. Because the focus of the book is a step beyond the XML specification itself, the basics of XML are covered up front in a quick and practical discussion. The authors do a great job of explaining the Document Object Model, as well as the DTD-versus-schema controversy. Then it's on to the fun stuff: a look at how to build XSL style sheets dynamically from a database, bind XML data locally with data islands, and construct a component that encapsulates reusable XML file operations.

The best way to grasp the power of XML, however, is to see it in action. Fortunately, the authors devote a large portion of the book to case studies that use XML in various ways: to drive an online survey system, generate programmer documentation for DLLs, represent a shopping cart, and serve as the glue behind a workflow application. If you're developing for the Web, sooner or later you will find XML either useful or necessary. This book should be required reading for any serious ASP developer. --Stephen W. Plain

1-0 out of 5 stars Notice the Dates on the Reviews
I got this book from a friend and after reading a few chapters I checked the Amazon reviews to see if "it was just me" or if this book was horrible. I was surprised to see it had even 3 1/2 starts. Then I read the reviews carefully...

Just days after the book came out, there was a rush of excellent reviews, most of which where only a few sentence long and lacked any detail. Then reality set in. People who really read it, universally hated it. -- And gave detailed examples why.

Now, I'm not going to say the original reviews where astroturf... but read them in order and watch the dates. Then consider you have a book with 14 authors all of whom use the internet and know the power of good Amazon reviews...

Things just don't add up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for Programmers to implement XML in ASP
Excellent! for ones who are pro to ASP and need to intergrate XML with ASP! A must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for Programmers to implement XML in ASP
This is definitely a good book for developers having good knowledge of ASP and XML and how to integrate XML in ASP. I just loved this book. People who say they don't like it, they have not read the book I am sure. Its sure worth the money!

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad examples, choppy, dated and not for beginners
I'm a big fan of the WROX publications (for ASP in particular), but this book was a disappointment. The writing was choppy - as you might expect from a book with 14 guys on the cover. The examples were cryptic and raise more questions than they answer.

The author(s) seem to me to be attempting to impress us (and each other) with their knowledge of the subject rather than really trying to write a digestible explanation of ways to utilize XML in an ASP environment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it (at all)
This book was a real dissapointment.

I LOVE wrox ASP 3.0 Ref and ADO 2.6 Ref. Maybe Wrox should have taken that approach with this book -- instead of trying to act like this book can in any way teach anything about XML.

The examples in this book are horrid, they aren't in depth enough, and more importantly, don't even correspond well with each other.

Too many of the chapters jump into the middle of a subject, then try to work back to the beginning and then forward to the end.

Trust me, I've read the first 5-7 chapters of this book and finally got so sick of all the ambiguity that I went out to the MS Site and learned more in 30 minutes there than I ever could have with this book.

Some of the case studies in the back are nice, and this book would have made a great reference (had they gone that route), but it is a horrible book to learn how to integrate XML with ASP.

Save your money. ... Read more

Product Description
Access 2002 is the core database application within the Office XP suite. This book focuses on the programming language that underlies Access 2002 (and all the other office products) – VBA (Visual Basic for Applications).

While you can achieve a great deal in Access without ever knowing anything about programming, sooner or later you will want to develop applications with greater scope and flexibility, and a professional feel and functionality - this is where VBA comes into its own.

Using VBA with Access is an incredibly powerful technique as, amongst other things, it allows you to create custom user interfaces, to automate complex tasks, to integrate Access with other parts of the Office suite, and to provide enhanced security for your database.

VBA has a very simple syntax which makes it an ideal starting place for novice programmers and a perfect lead in to Microsoft's popular programming language, Visual Basic. This book covers everything you need to gain the confidence and knowledge to go away and begin to write your own programs. All the concepts are illustrated with plenty of interesting and practical examples and exercises.

This book is a revision of the best-selling Beginning Access 97 and Beginning Access 2000 VBA books, reworked to provide a rich tutorial to programming Access 2002 with VBA. New material covers the enhanced options in Access 2002 for publishing data to the Web, handling XML, integrating with SQL Server Desktop Engine, and so on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Access VBA text I've seen so far
This is about the 10th book on Access VBA that I've read, and it is by far the best. The presentation is complete, and more importantly, logical. After studying this book, I finally feel like I understand how the various features work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Files Make A Potentially Good Book Mediocre
I was looking for a book that had theory and enough exercises to improve my fluency in use of VBA.This book has the theory but, due to an obviously extremely flawed production process, fails to include the chapter by chapter sample files on its CD that the authors claim are included. This severely constrains its overall utility. Also, as another reviewer has indicated, the authors sometimes play fast and loose with some of their explanations.I could probably overlook this, if the sample files had been included on the CD or if the publishers respected their customers enough to provide them with a page to download the files.Instead, the publishers simply indicate that they will not help title purchasers.

If you want to expand your theoretical understanding of Access 2002 and can get this title at a good discounted rate, you may want to consider purchasing this title. However, if you want both theory and practice, this book has very little to offer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Have you guys bothered to go to their website?
All wrox books ship without CDs. You are supposed to download the code from their website.

Shame on you who can't be bothered to visit their site even once!

4-0 out of 5 stars Content is great- CD is lacking
The book itself is GREAT!Lots of great concepts and tips, etc.The only problem is the book ships with a CD that does not have all of the chapter examples! On page 29 it states they provide a file for each chapter, specifically for the work they have done in that chapter.None of the chapter by chapter examples are on the disk. You have to email the company to get them to send you the disk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Start Fizzled badly!
I had to use this book for a class on "Database Programming". I took the class to (1) get credit for taking a class and (2) to get more help with Access and VBA for work. This book started out excellent, good explaintion very informative and after about chapter 6 it fizzles, with inconsistancies lack of all the information. Code wasn't included on the cd. They could have shown how to build a form that was needed for the chapter. Everyone in our class was given 100 pts for two modules because the book was incomplete. There were 12 modules in this class.
I felt cheated. I don't know who to blame the School or the book writer. I want to blame the school for not using a book that has complete code/explanations.
(I have been building databases with Lotus Notes for 7 years. Access is new to me, but programming isn't, so you know my perspective.) ... Read more
