Product Description
The prophecy of Isaiah occupies a large place in the Old Testament canon of Scripture, not only from the viewpoint of its length, but also from the perspective of its significance. Second only to the psalms, it is the book most frequently quoted in the New Testament. Among the books of the prophets, it is quoted by Jesus and his apostles in support of the New Testament gospel of grace more frequently than all of the other prophets put together. In addition, Isaiah's vocabulary is richer than that of any other prophet, and even more comprehensive and diverse than that of the psalms. Why did Jesus and his apostles quote from Isaiah as often as they did? What did the author of this book see in the prophecy of Isaiah that made him concentrate much of his preaching on this book for some thirty years? The answer lies in the messianic characteristic of the book; Isaiah speaks of Christ. Sometimes the prophecy is indirect, vague, and difficult to understand. At other times clear, literal, and straightforward. In either case, Isaiah always speaks of the coming of the Messiah implying both the judgment of the wicked world and the salvation of Zion. The author of this book, Homer C. Hoeksema served as minister in the Protestant Reformed Church from 1947 to 1959 as a professor of Old Testament and Dogmatics in the Theological School of the Protestant Reformed Churches from 1959 until his death in 1989. Hoeksema loved the prophecy of Isaiah and preached on 125 different passages from this book. Redeemed with Judgment: Sermons on Isaiah is the transcribed and edited collection of these sermons. ... Product Description
The era of collective intelligence has begun in earnest. While others have written about the wisdom of crowds, an army of Davids, and smart mobs, this collection of essays for the first time brings together fifty-five pioneers in the emerging discipline of collective intelligence. They provide a base of tools for connecting people, producing high-functioning teams, collaborating at multiple scales, and encouraging effective peer-production. Emerging models are explored for digital deliberative democracy, self-governance, legislative transparency, true-cost accounting, and the ethical use of open sources and methods. Collective Intelligence is the first of a series of six books, which will also include volumes on Peace Intelligence, Commercial Intelligence, Gift Intelligence, Cultural Intelligence, and Global Intelligence. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Morning of the Collective Mind
This is a wonderfully stimulating collection of offerings on the interplay between human collectives and the "information age."Inevitably, some insights are more gripping than others--but each essay by the more than fifty futurists (for want of a better term) engaged in this effort is worth reading. While we may think we're frightfully clever and sophisticated when it comes to our "information age," it struck this reader that, in relation to information exploitation, we're at a point equivalent to the mid-seventeenth century in the physical sciences: We've gotten some of the basic parameters figured out, but haven't yet begun to understand their myriad applications. This volume is stimulating, useful, sometimes brilliant, and always worth turning over the page.Very highly recommended for those involved in intelligence, government or the media--as well as for citizens concerned about our collective future.Brain food for grown-ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Available Free Online, Hard-Copy 12 April 2008
This book is the first of a series of books from the Earth Intelligence Network, a 501c3 Public Charity incorporated in Virginia. As with all our books, it is available free online for inspection, digital search, and Creative Commons re-use at no cost.

We are of course very proud of the hard-copy and of being able to offer it on Amazon, and the 55 contributors, all volunteers, hope you will buy a hard-copy both for its ease of hand-eye coordination and exploitation, and to support our work in creating public intelligence in the public interest.

Here are ten other books I as the publisher personally admire, that lend credence to our proposition, hardly original in concept but uniquely documented in this book, that We the People are now ready to self-govern at the zip code and line item level.

Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution
The Wisdom of Crowds
An Army of Davids: How Markets and Technology Empower Ordinary People to Beat Big Media, Big Government, and Other Goliaths
One from Many: VISA and the Rise of Chaordic Organization
Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything
The Tao of Democracy: Using Co-Intelligence to Create a World That Works for All

Product Description
The clean design and bright colours of the Fiesta dinnerware line - first introduced by the Homer Laughlin Co. in 1936 - caught the fancy of housewives everywhere, revolutionizing the market for tableware in the United States. Though originally offered in just five colours - red, ivory, cobalt blue, yellow and green - the number and variety of hues blossomed to include turquoise, rose, gray, forest green, chartreuse and medium green - one of the most popular and valuable. When the Fiesta line was reintroduced in 1986, after a hiatus from 1973 to 1985, collecting interest surged again. The passion for the vintage colours was reignited, and the line's new colours, including periwinkle, cinnabar and sunflower, created a stir amid a new generation of collectors. From the best of the old to the latest and greatest modern colours of the new, Warman's[registered] Fiesta Ware provides comprehensive expert advice and up-to-date pricing for the line that lent distinction to the plainest table. With more than 1,000 eye-appealing photographs, this colourful story is well told by author Mark F. Moran. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Start Collecting Fiesta Ware
This is a book with great pictures of all ages of Fiesta ware. The importance of color is what surprised me.I had thought age was the only thing that determined the value. Not so!This is clearly written and beautifully illustrated. My only question is about the values of the items. It seems to me that they are priced much too high.

1-0 out of 5 stars Skip this book and get the Huxfords' Guide
I love all things Fiesta, but this book is terrible. My main complaint is the "quality" of the photographs. They are so grainy-- sort of clear but fuzzy at the same time. And the color is way off.I mistook several pictures of gray Fiestaware for lilac at first glance! So forget about his "comparison" of the greens because it will not help you. What gets me is that any crap digital camera would have done a better job but from the reflections in the dishes it looks like he had a professional shoot the pictures.By the way, I also completely ignored the text (even though it is in LARGE print), since the Huxfords' book and the HLCCA's book cover everything. The bottom line: don't waste your time or money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass this one by.
First off Fiesta is beautiful, but the photographs in this book are terrible!!! Not one photograph shows an accurate depiction of thesubject. Many photographs seem blurred or fuzzy.
Pass this by and get "Fiesta, Harlequin, and Kitchen Kraft Dinnerwares" by The Homer Laughlin China Collectors Association. You will not ne disappointed....unless you purchase Warman's book. ... Read more

Product Description

This book makes the case that the plot of the Odyssey is represented within the narrative as a plan of Zeus, Dios boulê, that serves as a guide for the performing poet and as a hermeneutic for the audience. Through occasional participation in events and pervasive influence, the character of Zeus maintains thematic unity as the narrative moves through a mass of potential narrative paths for Odysseus that was already dense and conflicting at the time the Odyssey was taking shape. The “Zeus-centric” reading proposed here offers fresh perspectives on the tenor of interactions among the Odyssey’s characters, on the relationships among traditional accounts of Odysseus’ return, and on long-standing problems of interpretation.

October 3, 1943) is an American composer, conductor, music educator, and Peabody Award-winning classical music radio host. He is the host and music director of the public radio programs Exploring Music and Saint Paul Sunday. A nationally noted radio commentator, Bill McGlaughlin is known for his cheerful, open, and down-to-earth personality on classical music radio. Beyond his career as a broadcaster and music educator, McGlaughlin has also spent a decade as a professional orchestral musician, over two decades as a conductor, and a decade as a successful composer. McGlaughlin views the more recent, radio broadcast aspect of his musical career as outreach as a way to keep classical music from becoming an increasingly marginalized art form, with ever smaller and older audiences. McGlaughlin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and his unusual accent stems from his Philadelphia childhood and the influence of his Scottish-American grandfather, with whom he lived during his late teens. Bill absorbed the music of opera at a very young age, as his draftsman father listened while in his at-home workshop. When Bill was 6, his father gave him a harmonica, and together they enjoyed playing their favorite opera melodies by ear. His father also ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19992127 ... Read more

Product Description
This is Volume Five of the major six-volume Commentary on Homer's Iliad now being prepared under the general editorship of Professor G.S. Kirk. Volumes I and II, published in 1985 and 1990 respectively, were edited by Professor Kirk himself. Like its predecessors, the present volume (the first to be edited by one of Professor Kirk's four collaborators) consists of four introductory essays (including discussions of similes and other features of narrative style) followed by the commentary. The Greek text is not included. This project is the first large-scale commentary on the Iliad for nearly one hundred years, and takes special account of language, style, and thematic structure as well as of the complex social and cultural background to the work. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars too wordy, not enough focus on the Greek
I was disappointed.A good commentary needs to be complete but cannot be too wordy.Get to the point and allow us to get back to reading the text.Kirk's commentary is obviously meant for people who read Homer in the Greek, but he does not devote enough attention to the Greek text.Instead he sort of rambles on about the plot, what he things speakers have in mind, stylistic considerations that are not clear. Here's an example. You tell me if (a) this helps you understand the Iliad any better (b) you even know what the heck Kirk is talking about (b) "Until now the speech has been undramatic and routinely cumulative in expression, with conventional verse-structure and moderate enjambment. The present graphic and hypothetical calculation, set out in a single long and progressively-enjambed sentence and brought to an epigrammatic climax in 128, noticeably elevates the style."Okay.Difficult Greek cruxes are often ignored by Kirk.Older commentaries like Anthon's (published in 1847!) and Draper's marvelous recent book manage to be both more consise AND give you more helpful information. Unfortunatley, these books do not cover the entire Iliad.A good, complete, detailed modern commentary on the Iliad has yet to be written. This book certainly is not that. ... Read more
