Product Description
As one of the oldest and most beloved sports of all time, golf has been parodied, satirized, and spoofed more than any other sport. It has been particularly popular within the world of cartoons and comic strips-from Beetle Bailey to B.C. to Peanuts, the sport of golf appears in thousands of Sunday funnies around the world.

Golf in the Comic Strips features a collection of some of the foremost cartoonists as they capture the putts, drives, holes in one, bogeys, and birdies that illustrate the mysterious and rewarding allure of golf. From his collection of more than 4,000 cartoons and comic strips on golf, Howard Ziehm shares over 200 full-color, rare, and historic comic strips from more than 100 artists, including Clare Briggs (A Piker's Clerk), Sidney Smith (The Gumps), Charles Schulz (Peanuts), Johnny Hart (B.C.), and Mort Walker (Beetle Bailey).

Howard Ziehm shares insightful comments about the artists, the historical period of each strip, stylistic innovations and milestones, and artist-related information that offer a sense of what golf and the world was like in each era. Golf in the Comic Strips is an essential addition to the libraries of all golf lovers and cartoon fans.

Howard Ziehm is the writer and creator of a self-help, vocabulary-expansion series, including Wordbank (Simon and Schuster), and Wordbuilders (Bantam Dell). Currently, this nine handicapper operates several entertainment ventures, including Golftoons, a golf entertainment company, and resides in Malibu, California. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Suggest buying earlier edition
I suggest you buy an earlier edition as the image quality of the reprints, particularly the very old strips, are much better.

This edition contains no new infomation or comic strips.

The earlier editons can be bought used at Amazon.com

Never the less, both editions are excellent with regard to the strips shown and the commentary involved in both describing the strips and the game of golf.

They range from familar to unfamilar comics from the 1890's to present.

A book both tailored to comic strip fans and golfers.

I personally learned a good deal of history about golf and those who play it by reading such strips

5-0 out of 5 stars Greater Late than Never
This is an inspiring look at people who have experienced some of life's most exciting moments after reaching age 50.While some of the people have received world-wide acclaim, some are only lauded by those in their immediate circle of family and friends. The latter are the ones I find most worthy of admiration and emulation. We will not all be "famous" but we can all know that life does not end or become less after 50.An uplifting, easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A witty, yet insightful view of growing older
This book is about fulfilling ones dreams at any age.It is inspirationalwithout being prescriptive.Bob Hope's witty yet insightful portrayal ofboth famous and ordinary people who have made the most out of their livesis a delightful read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bob knows interesting people and tells their stories well.
I read this book in one sitting. It gave me a kind ofChicken-Soup-For-the-Soul uplift.Bob has led a unique life himself, knowsa lot of interesting people and has a ear for a good story. A feel goodread.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book was both entertaining and inspiring- nice job
As I approach 50 it is not without some trepidation. What have I done with my life?Mr. Hope's book is inspirational and entertaining.A Self-help book with real people. It makes me feel like the best is yet to come.I especially liked the way he talked about people we know about, yet on an intimate but not gossipy level. This book was fun, easy to read.Sort of like Chicken Soup for the Soul but not as schmaltzy.I like his style.I hope he writes some more. ... Product Description
Coming to terms with being gay in this society can be a stressful and lonely experience. Drawing on his own journey from troubled teenager to world renowned body-builder to proud activist, Bob Paris presents an intelligent and uplifting book designed to inspire homosexuals to be proud.Amazon.com Review
Bob Paris, a former Mr. Universe, became internationallyfamous when he came out in the early 1990s. His relationship withbodybuilder-model Bob Jackson made national headlines when theyappeared as an openly gay couple on the cover of InternationalMuscle Mag, and in 1994 they wrote Straight from theHeart, a joint autobiography.Generation Queer is ameditative volume of thoughts and advice to young people about comingout, loving, and seeking social justice in a world that seems, all tooften, to hate homosexuals. As in his 1997 Gorilla Suit: MyAdventures in Bodybuilding, Paris is perceptive andengaging.

The first half of Generation Queer offers Paris's personalcontemplation of what it has meant to be gay; the writing here isgentle and reflective as he describes his transformation from closetedsmall-town boy to gay icon. In the book's second half, Paris answers19 questions from young gay men and women, offering sound, sometimessurprising advice about how to make your way in the world even whileyou're changing it.Alternately funny, sensible, and spiritual,Paris's answers attempt to map a new world in which younger gay peoplecan be safe, happy, and sexual.--Michael Bronski ... 3-0 out of 5 stars not great, but not bad
I gotta admire Bob Paris for coming out and being a (somewhat unwilling) spokesperson for Gay Rights. And apparently he wrote this himself (no ghost writer). But this reads like a sophmoric treatise.Still, it's a gutsy attempt.
He covers much the same ground (not in as much detail) in "Straight from the Heart" (with Rod Jackson).I found that a better read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Superficial
Bob is a smart guy, but Generation Queer is so pat and superficial I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It reminded me of Jonathan Livingston Seagull - a series of philisophical thoughts, most of them generally reflecting upon the need to be comfortable (or to love) oneself.

The Q & A section of the book was better, mostly because the questions were interesting.Bob's answers were common sense replies to difficult questions.Nothing wrong with the replies, but nothing exceptional about them either.

Don't bother with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars AT LAST A BIBLE FOR GAY MEN WHICH IS HEAVEN SENT!
Bob Paris has produced a body of work in GENERATION QUEER that will undoubtedly create a new standard against which future books on this topic are judged.Yes folks, it is that informative, endearing and thoughtprovoking. The book is written from the author's heart and his Spirit leapsoff the page and touches the reader's heart in a magical and masterful way.The power behind his words of timeless wisdom actually transcend thewritten medium and create a golden opportunity for healing and integrationbetween our humanity and divinity not only as gay men butas human souls. His writing style is not only picturesque and artful it is truly inspiring.GENERATION QUEER is not a book. It is an inner odyssey that is meant to befully experienced and shared with every friend and loved one in your life.It is an adventure. My only regret is that this book has yet to beincorporated into the mandatory reading curriculum of every college so thateach human being regardless of sexual orientation will be afforded such arich treasure chest of uncoditional love and compassion in a world thatdesperately needs such lessons now more than ever.Save yourself somemoney on shipping.Buy five books at once since you will no doubt begiving them out as gifts to your friends like I have.I can not recommendthis book highly enough. I can hardly wait for the sequel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Gay Man or Woman!
Who would have thought a former Mr. Universe and Gay Activist would haveso much going on upstairs! What I mean is that Bob Paris' new book,Generation Queer, is the kind of book that makes you stop and think, andreflect on your own experiences, then evaluate where to go from here. Ienjoyed Bob's honesty and candor in dealing with the many problematicsituations presented. His advice is insightful and not the typical"force-fed" rhetoric you find in so many of the gay activistbooks on the market. At last someone is addressing questions like, How todeal with spiritual concerns and family relationships from a realisticpoint of view.I found many of my own private questions were discussed inlength and that I'm not alone in my concerns.I'm hoping there will beanother edition in the near future. I had only two disappointments:(1)After so many mentions of the "mailbag", where's the address soothers can share? (2)There's no pictures.(but, then its not that kindof book.) By the way, I was able to meet Bob Paris at a recentbooksigning in West Hollywood, and found him to be as real and thoughtfulas he is in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, healing words for all, desperately needed today.
Bob Paris proves that there is an extraordinary heart and brain under his Mr. Universe muscles. He answers questions which will help to guide young people to live a moral, kind, loving life. His advice is helpful not only to gay persons, but to the relatives of the rapidly-growing "out" gay population - and their friends and associates. This book can serve as a guide to keeping families together, and it is filled with genuine love- even for people who actively hate and persecute gay persons just for being gay.It is a remarkable book which will help many to live a happier, more forgiving, and more loving life. Bob Paris will astonish many with the wisdom he has accrued, and the capacity he has to uplift and inspire. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Shoot, It's Only Me
ISBN 0515105651 - Bob Hope is always funny, even when he's not being funny. And, oddly, he's always sappy - even when he's being funny.I cannot imagine anyone reading this without laughing outloud with a tear in their eye.

From 1938 to 1990, spanning a career that spanned the globe and a lifetime, Don't Shoot, It's Only Me tells a story that literally touches everyone. From Pearl Harbor to the Korean War, battles that have shaped both this country and the world, and Bob Hope (and, of course, his friends) was there for all of them, bringing a few laughs to the men and women of the Armed Forces far from home.

As an ironic-funny moment, I remember a running joke.Bad news from Hollywood - guess what?Bob Hope died? No, but (insert whatever).Of course, he DID die, after a long life full of laughs for all of us, but it just doesn't feel like it.It seems implausible that the man who made bearable some unbearable moments in our history could possibly ever die, and for 297 pages, Hope lives on. ...
