from the GENERAL PREFACE:

While the underlying causes of the greatest war in all history must be traced far back into the centuries, the one great object of the conflict which was precipitated by the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria, in Bosnia, at the end of June, 1914, is the ultimate determination as to whether imperialism as exemplified in the government of Germany shall rule the world, or whether democracy shall reign.

Whenever men or nations disregard those principles which society has laid down for their conduct in modern civilized life, and obligation and duty are forgotten in the desire for self-advancement, conflict results.

Since the days of Athens and Sparta the world's greatest wars have in the main been conflicts of ideals--democracy being arrayed against oligarchy--men fighting for individual rights as against militarism and military domination.

In the World War, which terminated with the signing of the armistice, November 11, 1918, which painted the green fields of France and Belgium red with blood, and swept nations into the most significant and bitter struggle in all history, the fight was against the Imperial Government of Germany, by men and nations who claim that humanity the world over has rights that must be observed.

Germany has brought upon herself the destruction of her government by ruthlessly trampling upon her neighbors and assuming that "might is right."

The Imperial Government, led by the House of Hohenzollern, was suffering from an exaggerated ego. Her trouble was psychological. The men who study the strange workings and twists of the human mind which land some men in the institutions for the criminal insane, agree that when any man becomes obsessed with an idea and "rides a hobby" to the exclusion of all else, he loses his balance and develops an obliquity of view which makes him a dangerous creature.

Germany was obsessed with the spirit of militarism and almost everything else had been sacrificed to this idol. The very first appearance of Germans in history is as a warlike people. The earliest German literature is of folk-tales about war heroes, and these stories tell of the manly virtues of the heroes.

It is true that there are many scientists, poets, and musicians among the Germans, but their warlike side must never be forgotten. The entire race is imbued with the military spirit, the influence reaching to every phase of national life. All that was best in the nation was raised to its highest efficiency through military training, but in the accomplishment of its purposes the House of Hohenzollern, which is responsible for the development of the national fighting arm, neglected much and produced millions of creatures who are but human machines, taught to obey orders without consideration as to the effect their acts might produce, whether right or wrong.

This attitude was reflected in the conduct of the Kaiser, who, as illustrative of the point, is quoted at the dedication of the monument to Prince Frederick Charles at Frankfurt-on-the-Oder in 1891, as having said, "We would rather sacrifice our eighteen army corps and our forty-two millions inhabitants on the field of battle than surrender a single stone of what my father and Prince Charles Frederick gained."

And just as America fought for liberty in the stirring days of 1776, and her peoples fought one another in the trying days of 1861-65, so America was drawn into the World's War that the principles of liberty, for which she has ever stood, might be perpetuated throughout the world, and that an international peace might be established, which has for its purposes the ending of such convulsions as have shaken the world since August, 1914, since the first shots were fired in fair Belgium by German invaders.

Product Description
At a time of corporate downsizing and bone-crushing international competition, how can executives reconcile their individual personalities and human needs with the equally compelling needs of the hard-driving organization? It is an existential dilemma, say Joe and Louise Kelly, and one with critical implications, not only for executives but for their organizations as well. The Kellys, by no means blithe theorists, take a hard look at this hard-edged problem by positing a three-pronged model for analysis based upon structure, process, and values. They synthesize these elements under an overarching concept of existentialism, in which the emphasis is on a search for meaning. And with that, they provide a clear-headed look at the field of organizational behavior--its contributions to our understanding of how organizations work, but also its failures and, indeed, its frequent self-deceptions. A well-written, vigorous, far-ranging examination, not only for executives who need the kind of help the Kellys offer in their daily combat on the job, but also for their colleagues in the academic community who have their own organizational problems to deal with. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A well written YA
Haunted Destiny is a well written YA that I didn't have to worry about my children reading the pages.A great ghost story with oomph.

Haunted Destiny refers to the heroine, Destiny Dove, who has survived a car wreck that killed her parents and brother. Without any other relatives, Destiny winds up living with her eccentric grandmother in a strange town.Destiny soon discovers her Grnadmother and her share a unique gift.

Haunted Destiny is filled withintriguing tale of ghosts (my favorite) and teenage angst. A great, light read that is truly enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chillingly Realistic Tale
I purchased this book expecting a YA ghostly romance, and I got so much more.I really enjoyed Destiny's story.Kelly Abell spun a chillingly realistic tale, and a very good read.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunted Destiny- Loved it!!!!
I picked up Kelly Abells book as I saw it on a forum and wanted to be able to give myself and mygrandchildren something fun to read and yet have it believeable...I always read first for content and just thought how wonderful this story was and how creative the writer...
Destiny is a young girl who was suddenly touched by tragedy. In a car accident that claimed her mother, father and baby brother she is taken from her rather elite home and moves to a trailer with a grandmother she never knew.

She is thrown into turmoil of being new in town, and wanting to make friends and ends up enemies with the "rich and spoiled" Amy who bellieves she wants her boyfriend Jake.

The story is about destiny finding herself, learning to deal with who she is and the evil that surrounds Amy and her family...The supernatural theme was written well, all characters were believable and being from the area Ms Abell writes about...I felt "there"

My grandson has started reading the story...I think he and his friends will love it as much as I did...Cudos Ms Abell...a story for all generations...

3-0 out of 5 stars an intriguing tale of ghosts, jealousy, and teen love
Destiny Dove was lucky enough to survive the car accident that claimed the lives of her parents and baby brother. Now she finds herself living in a small trailer with a grandmother she doesn't know. Making new friends in a small town isn't easy - especially when your grandmother is the town Medium. When strange things begin to happen, Destiny has no choice but to accept that she's inherited her grandmother's gifts.

A dark entity has entered town, attacking people close to it. Attached to a set of furniture, it's been set loose on an unsuspecting family. To make matters worse, the furniture belongs to Amy, the popular girl in town. Amy doesn't believe in ghosts, but it's either believe in spirits or believe she's losing her mind when a ghost begins to appear to her on a regular basis.

While the first chapter or two was a little rough, the story smoothed out a few chapters in, leading into an intriguing tale of ghosts, jealousy, and teen love. The characters of Destiny, Jake, and Grams Rose were likeable. And of course what would a teen story be without the super popular girl we all love to hate? While Amy's character comes across as snobby and cruel, there are times you can't help but feel sorry for her. The characters were all well developed, even the secondary ones. You could tell the author put some thought into the storyline. That being said, there were some rough POV transistions in a few places that detracted from the story a little, along with repetition, mostly about the car accident and Destiny's guilt.

Overall, I would say that Haunted Destiny is worth the read. I would gladly pick up another of Ms. Abell's YA books should she ever decide to write one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Haunted Destiny really pulled me in from the beginning; the characters came alive and the emotions and dialogues were especially well done.Destiny's nightmares over the car wreck that killed her family and her guilt over not being able to save her baby brother brought tears to my eyes. Her struggles to overcome this heartache and desire to fit in were realistic and well constructed.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and as the suspense was building I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The writing style did remind me a little of of Traci Hall's Rhiannon Godfrey series (only I think this book is actually better!) so if you liked that series, I think you will really like this book as well. I hope there is another Destiny book in the future! ... Read more

Product Description
From Linda Armstrong Kelly’s NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH:

This is what it means to be a mother, I realized. It had nothing to do with being old enough or knowing everything or keeping to a strict schedule. It had to do with loving someone with a love so huge, the rest of the world becomes insignificant by comparison. No fear I felt would ever amount to anything, compared to what I felt for my child. No task would ever be too hard for me. No one would ever be able to make me feel small. I was The Mama. You don’t get any bigger than that.”

From the mother of champion cyclist Lance Armstrong—an extraordinary story of the resilience of the human spirit and the remarkable effect of great parenting.
Lance Armstrong has dazzled the world with his six straight Tour de France championships, his winning personality, and his poignant victory over life-threatening cancer. Yet the adage that "behind every strong man there is a stronger woman" has never been more true than in Lance’s case. His mother, Linda Armstrong Kelly, is a force of nature whose determination, optimism, and sheer joie de vivre not only nurtured one of our era’s greatest athletes but fueled her own transformation from a poverty-stricken teen in the Dallas projects to a powerful role model for mothers everywhere. This luminous memoir, written with humor and compassion, tells Linda’s story of survival. Pregnant at age seventeen, kicked out of her home, and mired in an abusive relationship, Linda was a perfect candidate for disaster. But armed with a fierce belief in herself as a work in progress, and buoyed by a tidal wave of love for her little boy, Linda flouted statistics and became both a corner-office executive and a no-nonsense, empowering mom whose desire to excel was contagious. Her resolve to find “the diamond in the Dumpster, the blessing in every bummer” set an extraordinary example for Lance—and will inspire everyday moms to dream big and make a difference. Funny, resonant, down-to-earth, and utterly unforgettable, No Mountain High Enough is exhilarating proof that sheer willpower can—and occasionally does—triumph over adversity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the mother's influence
Lance Armstrong's mother molded her son to be the way he is today. I met Lance Armstrong's biological father on a plane flying to Dallas. He introduced himself to me and told me he was Lance's father. I sensed immediately that for meeting a stranger on a plane he was forward and charming..,,,but I could see thru him. I can see how at such a young age how Linda became pregeant and tried to raise her son to be the guy he is today. It wasn't from any help from his bioligical father. Armstrong's biological father name is Eddie Gunderson yet I feel he uses the DNA status that he has to Lance since Lance is successful. He has a good bragging right to say that he is Lance Armstrong's father.....Also Mr. Gunderson actually showed me on the plane while we were flying back to Dallas a very pretty silver cuff bracelet that he was wearing and it was inscribed, "Merry Christmas to Dad, Love Lance, 2004......I haven't read or heard anywhere that Lance has every reconciled with his biological father. Does anyone out there know????? Even though its very apparent that Lance Armstrong looks just like his dad after meeting Mr. Gunderson,,,,have they ever reconciled?????? Our conversation even before the plane took off in the air was one of an intimate nature. I usually don't come across this on plane travel. He asked where I live and what's a good restuarant to eat at in the immediate area,,,and also asked me how old I was,,,,,which I felt was odd.

The book puts Lance's biological father in somewhat of a harsh light and after actually meeting him, I also sense that. Lance was abandoned by his real father at a very early age and thankfully his mother shaped his personality and his success to what he is today. His mother is to be commmended as to raising such a fine young man as a single parent. It's a very good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linda Armstrong Kelly Book Review
Inspiring woman and even if she wasn't the mother of the 7 time Tour de France legend this would still be a great read.

No wonder where Lance got his determination from. Linda is a great example to any mum who thinks they are down on their luck and needs someone to look to.

The only downside I thought was she has aliases for the men in her life and other certain characters which sort of loses it's warts and all feeling.

Otherwise, definitely recommend this book. You won't be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frank, Funny and Charming
Reading Linda's story I instantly knew I'd want to lend this book to my Mum after I'd finished it. Are high achievers born or made? You won't find the answer in reading this book, but you'll see how a determined young woman who had every reason to fail succeeded and raised a champion. More importantly I feel - this story isn't just about Lance. It's definitely hers, it's quirky and charming, easy to read and definitely gives you a feel for her character. I preferred It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life - but I definitely recommend this as a great follow up read.
Kirsty Dunphey, Author Retired at 27, If I can do it anyone can

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Star Mom!
Linda Armstrong started out with enough strikes to doom most to a mediocre life - daughter of divorced parents and a drunkard father (stopped drinking when Lance was born), married at 16, mother at 17, expelled from high school for being pregnant, and abused by husband whom she eventually left. Instead, she raised (inspired, cheered, protected, funded, and assisted his early development and becoming a champion, and then added her inner strength to Lance's during a devastating cancer encounter) a world renowned bicycling champion and major force in cancer research and support.

At the same time Linda went on to complete her GED and worked her way up to a high-level position within a large communications firm. It was not all success for Linda, however - she also had to go through two additional failed marriages (a philanderer, and a drunkard), before finally finding her "true love."

After reading the book it is clear that both Lance Armstrong AND his mother, Linda, are very exceptional and inspirational individuals. I wish I had read this book myself before becoming a parent - my approach and perspectives would hopefully have greatly improved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dynamos Run in the Armstrong Family
I am glad Lance's Mom decided to write her story. After I read It's Not About the Bike, I was inspired and eager to learn how a seemingly super-human came to be.Now I know: his Mom exudes energy, enthusiasm, and optimism without bounds: who could lose with such incredible and selfless support screaming in your ear on each lap of the race.

This is a book that focuses primarily on Linda Armstrong Kelly.Lance plays a pivotal but supporting role in the story. She is honest and forthright about the men in her life; other women have just shriveled and become bitter. She is unabashedly supportive of her son, in spite of his adolescent fixation with speeding and dangerous shenanagans with his pals.And... she raised a smart son who loves and respects his mother, especially shielding her from some of the pranks that would drive many parents to pack their son off to some military academy. The fireballs come to mind as I write this.

She is a mom that celebrates Mother's Day, everyday. Now, if she can figure out a way to bottle and sell her optimism and energy!Enjoy the read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As Serious as the Grave by Kiernan Kelly
Tyler is a zombie. An handsome gay zombie. But in a world where the undeads have gain the right to live among the still living it's not so simple for him to have a social life. Even if he is in better condition than the other corpses, it is always difficult for a dead guy to find someone to bed.

But one night Tyler sees Daniel with different eyes, like a man and not like a friend and Daniel admits he feels something for Tyler, long before his death.

They make love for an entire weekend but the world outside is mad: some people don't want the undead to live among them and Daniel and Tyler must face an hate, far worse than an homophobic behaviour.

This is a rather brief tale, of love and passion, with a tinge of horror and humor. An original plot that ended in a realistic way: not all could be roses and flowers in the life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great snapshot of Ireland of the 80's
Love Knot is a lively and insightful snapshot into Irish culture at a time when it was emerging from the domination of the Catholic church in Ireland. The story is both entertaining and challenging as it captures the Social and Cultural influences which shaped the Ireland of the 1980's. While the actions of the heroine may seem dizzy, she embodies and represents the Madonna/whore psyche of Irish women of the time, and of which there was no easy expression. This book is much more than a love knot. It is a must read.
