4-0 out of 5 stars If you've had time for Edna and Les, you should try Barry
A very witty tale by Australia's master of satire
which must in some way reflect the oddities of its authors celebrity lifestyle despite the disclaimer. It makes you feel that you're in the real world of this author. It has wry social observations and is
easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars What they do to the rich and famous
Some very witty insights, including: "This young man had .. made the rather useful discovery that people can usually be persuaded to accept you at your own estimation of yourself."

I personally don't approve of Humphries using his fine intellect to make so many awful comments about people's appearances, but other people might like those bits best.

Also, you must have an interest in sex to get full value from this book.

From the author: Gough Whitlam's decision in 1974 to appear in Barry Humphries's film about a larrikin abroad, Barry McKenzie Holds' His Own, marks a potent moment in Australia's post-imperial history--a moment when the politics of Australian theatre and the theatre of Australian politics directly coincided. In their different spheres, Humphries and Whitlam dramatised the waning British connection felt by Australians. Whitlam's own version of "new nationalism" was brash and confident enough to embrace the eccentricities and vulgarities of Humphries's satire. Yet Whitlam's "new nationalism", like Humphries's satire, was highly ambivalent. Humphries's first film, The Adventures' of Barry McKenzie, was a direct product of the new nationalist enthusiasm that had brought Whitlam to power. Although it was savaged by the critics, the film was a box-office success. Intellectuals such as Patrick White, Manning Clark and Geoffrey Dutton lavished praise on Humphries and his satirical portrayal of Australian anxieties about culture and national identity. Humphries portrayed the underlying dilemma that Whitlam faced in refashioning the image of modern Australia: how to throw off the symbols of colonialism and find meaningful symbols to replace them. In the process, both the politician and the humourist rediscovered a particular and enduring affection for the mother country.

Product Description
The four Australians featured in this book--Barry Humphries, Clive James, Germaine Greer, and Robert Hughes--are all writers and performers who decided to leave their native land in the late 1950s or early 1960s and to pursue their brilliant careers abroad. Ian Britain's profiles of their careers concentrate on the reasons for their expatriatism and consider what aspects of their Australian identity they have retained. His is the first detailed study of this generation of Australian expatriates, and richly combines elements of biography, cultural criticism and social history.

The profiles are based on a wide range of their subjects' writings and public pronouncements in the press, or on radio and television, stretching back over nearly half a century. These sources, the author maintains, help to illuminate the inner life and abiding preoccupations of this famous foursome more effectively than personal interviews with them

As well as charting the life and work of four vibrant individuals, Britain's book suggests what is distinctive about them as a generational group, and reflects on how far they may be seen as the "last expatriates"--the most vivid flowers of a dying breed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to four fascinating characters.
This book profiles four well-known Australians who have lived abroad for most of their adult lives. The book sets out to "concentrate on the reasons for their expatriatism and consider what aspects of their Australian identity they have retained". Sadly, the author relied totally on secondary sources, and did not speak directly to any of his subjects. This limited his ability to peer into their souls;to discover what effect their lives as expatriates have had on their work, and on them as people. In spite of this serious weakness, the author obviously spent a great deal of time studying his subjects. For anyone looking for an introduction to the lives of these incredibly talented Australians, the book is worth reading. ... Read more

Excerpt: Harold Edward Holt, CH (5 August 1908 17 December 1967) was an Australian politician and was the 17th Prime Minister of Australia. His term as Prime Minister was brought to an early and dramatic end in December 1967 when he disappeared while swimming at Cheviot Beach near Portsea, Victoria, and was presumed drowned. Holt spent thirty-two years in Parliament, including many years as a senior Cabinet Minister, but was Prime Minister for only 22 months. This necessarily limited his personal and political impact, especially when compared to his immediate predecessor Sir Robert Menzies, who was Prime Minister for a total of 18 years. Today, Holt is mainly remembered for his somewhat controversial role in expanding Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War, for his famous "All the way with LBJ" quote, and for the sensational circumstances of his death. In the opinion of his biographer Tom Frame, these have tended to obscure the many achievements of Holt's long and distinguished political career. Holt as Minister for Immigration (19491956), was responsible for the relaxation of the White Australia policy and as Treasurer under Menzies he initiated major fiscal reforms including the establishment of the Reserve Bank of Australia and launched and guided the process to convert Australia to decimal currency. As Prime Minister, he oversaw landmark changes including the historic decision not to devalue the Australian dollar in line with the British pound, and the 1967 constitutional referendum in which an overwhelming m...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=13867 ... Excerpt: Graham Cyril Kennedy, AO (15 February 1934 25 May 2005) was an Australian radio, television and film performer, often called "Gra Gra" (pronounced "grah-grah") and "The King" of Australian television. Kennedy was born in Camden Street, Balaclava to Cyril William Kennedy and Mary Austen Kennedy (née Scott). His mother, who was 18 years old at the time of his birth, was employed at a local picture theatre. His father worked variously as an engineer and handyman, mowed lawns and washed cars, and in 1939 joined the RAAF as an air gunner. His first home was a "small, crowded duplex" at 32 Nelson Street, Balaclava. A 20 cm diameter plaque was placed on the property by the City of Port Phillip, coincidentally in the week of Kennedy's death. When Kennedy was two years old, his parents moved to Carlisle Street, St Kilda for two years. His parents divorced shortly before World War II, and Kennedy was largely raised by his grandparents, "Pop" Kennedy (who had been an electrician at Me...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1620133 ...
