OUR month's voyage of Venice had come to an ,end. We had said so many times to each other in the mornings, " We must go," that the meaningless declaration had come to be received with bursts of laughter, and nobody dared say it any more. Nevertheless it was true: people who meant to summer in the Tyrol must not spend the whole of June in Venice. Silent, sad, beautiful Venice, how did our eyes dins; to .'thy spires, as looking backward from the railway carriage we saw them slowly go down in the pale water. That one can leave Venice by rail seems the most incredible thing in life. At the first turn of the wheels and snort of the engine we began to doubt whether the city had been real; the first sight of green land was bewildering; and when at the first station we saw wheeled carriages waiting for people, we were struck dumb. What a gigantic and agile creature did the horse appear! and what a marvel of beautiful solidity the level earth, brown under foot, and full of locust hedges and pink-blossomed trees! It is no small proof of the subtile spell of that wonderful city of water and stone, slowly sinking at anchor, that one month's life on its bosom is enough to make all other living seem unnatural. We even felt dull misgivings about the Tyrol, and the dolomite mountains of the grand Ampezzo Pass through which we were to pass to reach it. Nevertheless, " Ampezzo Pass " was so stamped upon our whole bearing, that, as soon as we stepped out of thecarriage at Conesrliano, we were taken possession of by screaming vetturini, each man of whom possessed the very best carriage and the very best horses, and was himself the very best guide in Conegliano! 0 the persistence, the superhuman persistence, of an Italian with a hope o... ... Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book: MY TOURMALlNE.I Had arrived, late one November afternoon, at a wretched little tavern in a small village in Maine. I was very unhappy. It was of no consequence to me that I was young; it was of no consequence to me that I had superb health. I was very unhappy. How compassionately middle age smiles, looking back upon the miseries of its healthy youth ! How gladly to-day would I be sent away in disgrace from college, to rusticate for six months in a country parson's house, if I could feel the warm, strong blood bound in my veins, as it bounded that night when I jumped from the top of the stage to the ground under the ugly, creaking sign of that village tavern. It was a dismal afternoon. A warm rain was slowly filtering down through the elm-trees with which the street was too thickly shaded. The ground was sprinkled with golden-yellow leaves, and little pools of muddy water filled every footprint on the grass-grown sidewalk. A few inertand dispirited men lounged on the tavern steps with that look of fossilized idleness which is peculiar to rural New England. In other countries, idlers look as if they were idling because they liked it; or perhaps because illness or lack of employment had forced them to idle; but the New England idler, on the steps of his native tavern, or by the stove of his native " store," looks as if he had been there since the prehistoric ages, and had no more volition or interest in his situation than a pterodactyl five hundred feet under ground.Spite of the rain, I had persisted in riding on the outside of the stage. I took a perverse pleasure in being wet through, and chilled to the marrow. I remember I even thought that I hoped I should take cold and have a rheumatic fever, so that the President might see what had come of sending a fellow down ... ... Read more

Product Description
Between 1879 and 1934, the United States government made a concerted effort to dissolve tribes by dividing communally-held lands and forcing American Indians to adopt Euro-American practices. Three progressive women seized a wave of national fascination with American Indians to fashion themselves as public storytellers and challenge the national drive to assimilate indigenous peoples. This book focuses on these remarkable women: white writer and activist Helen Hunt Jackson, whose 1884 bestseller Ramona has been called "the Indian Uncle Tom's Cabin"; the Paiute lecturer, educator, and political activist Sarah Winnemucca, whose Life Among the Piutes is believed to be the first Native American woman's autobiography; and Victoria Howard, the Clackamas Chinook storyteller who worked with Melville Jacobs in 1929 to transcribe hundreds of narratives, ethnographies, and songs. Senier is the first author to analyze the texts of these three women so closely. She convincingly argues that these complex texts have been misinterpreted as supporting the policy of assimilation, when they actually opposed the male, authoritarian voice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get to know yourself
The point of the Imago theory is know yourself better and train your partner to give you what you never got as a child. It takes two people to get the love you want. This is not an audio tape for a single person or if you or your partner is a bull headed person. You are the dominant best and worst traits of the parent that fustrated you the most. If you can't accept thisas pretty much who you are then don't waste your time and let Dr Phil tell it like it is in a rude unpolished way that's surface deep. This imago technique is for those who are encouraged to change more when they really understand the deep emotional wounds playing out in those arguements you have with your partner.
This techniques works but your partner has to buy into the theory as much as you do. This what I learned. My best wishes are with you in the emotional trek

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Couples Therapy
I believe this workbook contains the best selection of tools to help all couples. The method is well written and backed up by research and is based onwell developed theory.I rate it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
Great book.If you can stick with it, it will definitely help your relationship.

1-0 out of 5 stars Audio
Do not buy the audio if you're looking to listen to it in your car for some advice...it's mainly to do with your partner in a workbook together. Also, only if you have alot of time to devote to this type of self-counseling.

5-0 out of 5 stars A family tradition
My wife grew up hearing this song at camp and introduced it to me when we were dating in college. We had no idea it was a book though until we had our daughter and after she turned 2 I stumbled onto it on Amazon. As soon as I saw it, I bought it and had it shipped to my wife and daughter while they were on an extended visit with her parents. They were all delighted. My wife read the book with great nostalgia, and through it, has passed this cherished family tradition onto our now 3 year old daughter who has adopted the book as one of her favorites. It would not surprise me if one day, many years from now, our daughter finds this book in a dusty chest, and reads it with similar nostalgia to her own kids. That is the kind of book this is, one that will surely become a family treasure and keepsake.

Just one note on the story itself. I agree with the other reviewers that it is full of excitement and adventure, but I would be hesitant to say it's scary. It could certainly be so for some kids, so parents take care and exercise your own common sense and caution, but my daughter has loved the book and never been frightened by it since she started having it read to her when she was about 24 months old. Otherwise, I agree with the other reviewers in every way. The rhyme, the pictures, the sound effects, everything about this bookjust comes together magically and wonderfully. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun plot
At first my 3 year-old was a bit scared by the bear at the end and didn't want to read it. But then, she started to pull it out of her shelf to have it read and she now likes finishing the sentences. Yesterday, we were walking on a wilderness path, and she was repeating "Stumble, trip", Stumble, trip, (a part of the book where they are walking through the forest).

1-0 out of 5 stars Hunting?
Who wants to teach a child to be happy about hunting? Like: yey!! let's go and kill beautiful animals!

5-0 out of 5 stars A forever favorite!
My grandmother bought this book for me when I was 2, and I remember as a kid loving it soo much.I remember wanting to wear the outfits and wanting to go on bear hunts and teaching all of my younger siblings to read it as well.(Having it memorized definitely helped!) I recently bought a new copy for the 1 year old I nanny and she absolutely loves it.It's quickly becoming her favorite book, with her favorite part being the end where they're rushing back home.I would recommend that everyone have this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous illustrations on a beloved traditional song
This is a song that has held a special place in my heart via summer camp and school days alike.Michael Rosen has taken the song, presented it in a thoroughly classic version that proves very charming. The story is steadily paced, bit by page, bit by page, to create a true storybook rather than just a song. Here comes our family, determined to find a bear despite the many challenges along the way. And when they find the bear... well, that's when the true fun begins, and the pacing and organization is marvelous. To top it off is Helen Oxbury's incredible artwork that lends such wonder, sweetness, and humor to this story.Definitely a keeper. ... Read more
