In the spring of 1923, in a university town that had been proud of its progressive attitudes, a mob of several hundred men and women gathered to watch the lynching of a black man accused, wrongly it seems, of raping a professor's daughter.

The lynching caused a national outcry among black activists. "We are glad to note," W. E. B. noted in The Crisis, "that the University of Missouri has opened a course in Applied Lynching. Many of our American Universities have long defended the institution, but they have not been frank or brave enough actually to arrange a mob murder so that students could see it in detail."

Hunt's book describes both the mob's actions and the attempts of some citizens, black and white, to bring its leaders to justice. Enthusiastic readers of Harper Lee’s "To Kill a Mockingbird" may be interested in this account of how justice operated in a Southern town when its representatives were men more ordinary and flawed than Atticus Finch.

A fascinating read
Doug Hunt's account of the James Scott lynching is so remarkably detailed and beautifully written that it stays with you long after you've finished reading.While the story itself raises multiple issues regarding civil rights, human nature and justice, Hunt avoids using this essay as a platform for his own viewpoints; rather, through meticulous research, he has allowed the people involved and the tragic turn of events to speak for themselves.

Stewart Road Bridge
As a boy in Columbia, I grew up hearing stories about the lynching of James Scott.The victim of the sexual assault lived on my street, and Scott, the accused attacker, was lynched not far away, on the Stewart Road Bridge.I used to deliver newspapers nearby in the early mornings, and sometimes I'd imagine the scene.A few of my neighbors were old enough to remember people who were involved.I recall a neighbor in her late 80s telling me that the mob that carried out the lynching was composed mostly of men who hung out in a certain bar downtown."What is it about men that makes them gather in groups like that?" she said, and then the conversation drifted elsewhere.There wasn't any sense of uncertainty about the story.The way I always heard it, Scott was the victim of a mob, and he didn't receive his right to a fair trial; but he had attacked an innocent girl who also happened to be white.He had the poor fortune of being the last lynching victim in Columbia, Missouri; but he had also made a terrible decision that would have sent him to prison in any case.
This version of the story would still be accepted if it weren't for Doug Hunt's groundbreaking research.In some ways this is remarkable, given that the lynching occurred in a college town with a top-rate journalism school, as well as history departments, sociology departments, anthropology departments, creative writing programs, novelists,African-American historians, mid-Missouri historians -- virtually every kind of serious thinker, researcher, and writer (even the local paperboy wanted to write!).But perhaps the local story seems too obvious, and nobody went about studying the archives and thinking about the incident in a challenging way.Fortunately, Doug Hunt was one resident and writer who became intrigued by the story -- he also lives within walking distance of the former bridge -- and his findings are nothing less than shocking.It seems quite clear that the wrong man was lynched.It's also possible that the victim was encouraged to lie on the stand, to the point of perjury, because of fear of public shame.The local press did its part to help obscure the truth.These are three tragedies of the James Scott story; another tragedy is that it took eighty years before somebody in the community addressed this tale in all its depth. There are complex and important reasons for this, which is why I also look forward to reading Hunt's other stories about history, race, and community in this part of Missouri.

Doug Hunt has provided us with a close-up look at one of the last lynchings in the United States. The story is harrowing and changed the university town of Columbia, Missouri. But until Hunt reconstructed the horrible events, it had been allowed to fade into obscurity and the town has all but forgotten the events. Hunt's reconstruction of the events is scrupulous to the facts and fast-paced, pulling the reader along until the story comes to its grisly conclusion. A Story of History
This book is the Story/History of William Tyndale and his journey to get everyone to read the Bible so that even the plowboy will know some versus.The main characters Uncle jack and Tom Barton , smugglers, make a deal to William Tyndale promising to sell these books in England while fulfiling all of their wants. Tyndale wants the Bible to reach everyone and TOm adn Jack want to become rich, but trouble seems to head their way around every corner. This book is enjoyable full of details you might not find in other books. I suggest this book to anyone who likes old english history or enjoys a story that keeps you till the end.

THE HAWK THAT DARE NOT HUNT BY DAY
This book is about William Tyndale getting Bibles to England in the sixteenth century. William Tyndale is a preacher who wants to bring Bibles over to England that everyone can buy. He accomplishes this by smuggling the Bibles he has translated and printed over in a ship called the Black Pearl. This story mainly focuses on the captain of the ship and his nephew who smuggle the Bibles for Tyndale. This story was slow to get going but was okay by the end. I would recommend it to people who like historical fiction.

Action, mystery, and suspense!
The Hawk that Dare Not Hunt By Day is an excellent book which I would love to read again.It is full of suspense and mystery.It is even based around somebody's actual life, the life of William Tyndale, the person whofirst translated The New Testament into English.The book is by ScottO'Dell, the writer of The Island of the Blue Dolphinsand many otherchildren's novels.

MUST HAVE for up and coming readers!
I don't comment too often, but when I really have an opinion I have to.This book is awesome and I am so glad I found it.My daughter LOVES doing these treasure hunts, and unfortunately (well for the book) her reading ability surpassed the book too quickly because the clues were way too easy for her after a while.I had to start going towards the back of the book to get harder ones.But I DEFINITELY recommend this for kids who are just about to learn to read.My daughter will drop whatever she is doing to go on one of these Treasure Hunts and zig-zag through the house to find the clues.Lots and lots of fun and very very educational.

Fun and super easy!
This book is really fun for my beginning reader (6) and my littler son (3). They love working on a team. I've been surprised at how easily my 6yr old can read them, when usually he doesn't want to try to read at all. These have been lots of fun. Of course you could make your own, but it's awesome having the work all done for you! I can set one of these up in under two minutes, and they're always so excited to find a clue!

I don't use the stickers as rewards. I don't use the last clue that says "Come get your sticker!" We started a game with a stuffed animal and sometimes he goes away and hides, but leaves these clues behind. So the end clue is the stuffed animal.

Excellent idea
My 5-year-old LOVES doing these treasure hunts; we even use them as a reward when he's had a great day at school. He puts the sticker he earns at the end of each hunt on the calendar, which also gives us the opportunity to discuss days of the week and month.

I would recommend a more rudimentary introduction to reading before beginning to use this book; I started teaching my son to read at home right after his fourth birthday, which is when I bought this book. After it arrived, I realized it would be too advanced for a very new beginner and put it away for later.

What a huge hit it has been (and Pirates of the Caribbean and the acccompanying pirate obsession hasn't hurt the interest in treasure hunts, even though he hasn't seen the movie)!

I will absolutely buy this as gifts for other parents/kids.

He would love to do one after the other if I would let him.Every time he finishes one he ask if we can do another one.Don't even think about it -- just get this book!You will not regret it!!
