Product Description
Arranged for Guitar Tablature & Standard Notation With Chords & Lyrics. Mississippi John Hurt had a fascinating career, originally recording a handful of songs in the late 1920s, and, after disappearing for nearly 30 years, being rediscovered by a new generation of musicians that included Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Stephen Sills.Found in 1963 living in a small town in Mississippi, by an admirer who tracked him down through the lyrics of his 1928 single "Avalon Blues," Mississippi John Hurt was persuaded to go to Washington, D.C. and start a new career. He spent the next three years performing and recording for a whole new group of fans. In addition to transcribing all the songs in this collection, Stefan Grossman was also a student of John Hurt. Includes a CD containing John Hurt's original recordings so you can hear the music as it was originally performed. Contents: Shake That Thing, Spike Driver's Blues, Casey Jones, Got The Blues, Can't Be Satisfied, Joe Turner Blues, Stocktime, Hey Baby, Right Away, Aibn't Nobody But You Babe, Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor, Nobody's Diry Business, Richland's Women Blues, Louis Collins, Blessed Be The Name, Praying On The Old Camp Grounds, Let The Mermaids Flirt With Me, Corinna Corinna, Oh Mary Don't You Weep, Avalon Blues, Sliding Delta, Coffee Blues, Monday Morning Blues, Candyman, Trouble I've Had All My Days, See See Rider, Stack O'Lee Blues, Big Leg Blues. Also includes a 3 page biography by Jas Obrecht, and photographs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book w DVD
His music is tougher than it sounds. Not for beginners. Haven't spent much time with the book as I'm trying to get my playing better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning ragtime blues from a base thumb and three fingers - I learned this way but never realized that John Hurt did same.
The book is excellent as well as the CD's - I play them under Itunes on my Mac.With a head set the clarity is even improved. My first introduction to what I called country blues in the 60's 70's was from Mississippi John Hurt and a man that published some country blues and ragtime books back in the old days. He was a great player and so is Stefan Grossman. I also liked Blind Blake and Blind Will McTell. I had a lot of Yazoo records in those days.

Well I have picked up my Martin D35 and began playing music and lyrics I have written as well as other guitar pickers and singers. Of course Mississippi John Hurt has always been one of my favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Grossman product of excellence!
Grossman is serious about the blues.A gifted teacher (see his DVDs here at Amazon), here he presents the student with an excellent and nicely legible Guitar Tab of 26 of Mississippi John Hurt's songs, including all the hits "My Creole Belle", "Louis Collins", and some not so known like, "Blessed Be the Name" and "Sliding Delta".

As with other Grossman products, excellence is the keyword.Grossman wants precision and he wants feel, but before you can "own" and begin to add signature toa song, you must learn it.He feels that you can best learn from the master himself, so included is two CDs of MJH's music, including the high quality live performances (with much improved recording over the 1920's and 1930's recordings), so it is a real treat to own.

Great for early guitarists who may not yet be true Intermediates, but also great for advanced guitarists who need the music of MJH!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mississippi John Hurt (Book & 2 CD's)
This book covers most if not all of Mississippi John Hurt's songs (26 songs total). This is essentially the same book as the older Stefan Grossman's Masters of Country Blues Guitar, The Music of Mississippi John Hurt, Edited by Aaron Stang. The two CDs are very high quality recordings of live performances, possibly not available elsewhere. Shake That Thing and Sliding Delta are included here. I've been unable to find MJH recorded version of these songs elsewhere. These recordings just by themselves are probably worth the price of the whole package. Songs are presented in tablature and standard music format. All the words for all the verses are present. The tablature is big and easy to read. There are several songs where the tablature transcriptions are just for the break. The parts that aren't tabbed out should be the easiest parts to figure out. Or, you can learn the break and just use that to accompany your singing. Again each song is represented, on a separate page, in standard music format, with the melody line and the cords noted. I wanted Coffee Blues spoon fed to me one loving spoonful at a time, in its entirety, so I'm a little disappointed that only the break was included as tablature. I'm sure that filling in the gaps will make me a better musician. That is the whole point isn't it? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for OB-GYN residents
I think my entire class of OB-GYN residents bought this our intern year. I still use it now as a third year. It covers a lot of the information you can get pimped on, and explains it well. It is small enough to carry around, so those slow rotations, where you have 5-10 minutes throughout the day, this is a good resource. The only negative things I notice is that there is a lot of information, so you have to read instead of skim. And the book cannot fit into my white coat pocket. But definately one of the books I rely upon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast delivery.
Came quicker than expected...within a few days. Also, was just as described - a new book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for New RNs in Women's Health/L&D/Maternity Depts, etc.
I'm a new Rn (13 months) working on the L&D unit at a large teaching hospital in Orlando, FL and I've been researching maternity nursing software for a new smartphone/PDA that I plan to purchase. The search lead me to the Skyscape website and this Johns Hopkins manual. Skyscape allows you to download a trial form of the software onto your pc so that you can view the product before buying. This is the 5th item that i've viewed today alone and I'm so incredibly HOOKED on the manual that I plan to buy it from Amazon immediately and purchase the pda software (though I am a little apprehensive about the software now based on reading the second reviewers comments on here).Anyways, I will be precepting a graduate nurse in a couple of weeks and I will totally recommend that she purchase this manual as well because it provides an AWESOME, EASY TO READ, TO THE POINT, description, instruction and medication treatment (dosage, side effects & contraindications) for EVERYTHING that I've encountered thus far on L&D - and I've only read the section on "Normal Labor and Delivery, Operative Delivery, and Malpresentations".I wish I had read this when I first started working on the floor because it would've provided a GREAT transition into this field of nursing from nursing school. The information provided is SHORT, SPECIFIC and VERY CLEARLY WRITTEN. Even though the manual is written for med students, it totally provides a great learning tool for nurses as well because it will help me with anticipating the need of the physician when providing intrapartum care on the labor floor, which in turn increases provision of effective patient care.A big THANK YOU to the authors ! :o))

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for your rotations
This is a compact book following the same formula for the other manuals from this collection (Ex Washington manual). It is not a treatise and it is not intended to be so, quite the contrary. It is a pocket book, easy to carry and to manipulate. It cover all the topics you might need for your day to day life in the hospital in a short , but not too short, and up to date format. I like the fact that you can read any chapter in less than 30 minutes. I recommend this book for medical students in need of a compact book to carry during the GOB internship or for revising topics before an exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars an utter waste of time (and EXPENSIVE)
Do NOT buy the PDA version of this classic manual. The manufacturer shipped me a mismarked (wrong Operating System) shrink-wrap package with a warning that opening it would disallow a refund. The correct product had been mailed despite the mislabeling, but the convoluted registration process was time-consuming and produced an INVALID activation code. The purported SmartPatch fix also failed. Now, 6 days after paying for the product, it still doesn't work and the short East-coast technical support hours mean that MAYBE tomorrow, the 7th day after purchase, I MIGHT be able to use this product. Had this manufacturer been less paranoid about piracy, using a more standard serial # activation (like OTHER manufacturers), I'd be a happy customer recommending their product. ... Read more

This book fills a special niche in the field of dermatopathology texts. Many excellent texts are available unfortunately the average student or resident cannot afford to buy color illustrated large volume texts.Thisselection is affordable and well designed to teach dermatopathology to thepathology resident, dermatology resident or interested student.Theillustrations are clear and easy to follow with the accompanying arrows. This is a good basic pathology book with good black and white photos. The strength of this book is that all of the features are illustrated with pointers to the significant feature. The drawbacks are that the photomicrographs are not in color and the text is not all encompassing. Some of the newer immunohistochemical staining techniques are not fully explained. ... Product Description
Internationally acclaimed photographer Greg Gorman has just completed his most personal work to date: the male figure study. Twenty years in the making, this epic artist's project features carefully selected young men--not big or overly built--who exemplify for Gorman a perfected state, allowing him to frame grace, beauty, and elegance in the form of the male nude. Included amongst the 240-plus portraits are many of Gorman's friends and acquaintances, as well as professional models, many of whom had never posed nude before. The cumulative effect of As I See It creates a pleasurable zone of contemplation, allowing one to reexamine the precepts of beauty within a refreshing framework of exalted maleness. According to Gorman, "As I see it, they're not really boys, yet they're not really men. They are caught somewhere in between--almost at that point of maturity that defines masculinity." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent anthology of Greg's work.
This photo book is a must have and and excellent companion to Greg Gorman: In Their Youth. Every serious collector of male photography and emerging photographer will treasure them.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Seen By Me
The photos of nude men are beutifully captured in sepia tones. There is nothing provocative or crude. It's just men posing in the buff. There are a few photos of Christopher Atkins and Josh Duhamel. The book is just beautifully put together.

5-0 out of 5 stars AS I SEE IT
ONE OF THE MOST EXCEPTIONAL BOOKS OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE WORLD>
MR. GORMAN AT HIS BEST!

2-0 out of 5 stars If you like this style of clone, go for it.

Art is a matter of taste, and taste will affect one's assessment. The reason I was immensely disappointed in this book was because (a) almost all the models look the same and (b) that particular style of clone isn't what I find particularly appealing--at least not enough to welcome a couple hundred pictures of essentially the same thing. With that many models, one might naturally expect to find a variety--a few alternate races thrown in, or at least a few different looks (body types) and variety of presentation. We all have our preferences, and this wasn't mine.

Maybe I should give three stars instead of two, because, after all, the editorial review does provide a hint (if inadequate) that these are "carefully selected" guys "who exemplify FOR GORMAN a perfected state." It's just that you won't know what that limitation is exactly (what his idea of perfection is), until you get the book.

One thing I found odd, which is partly why I say "clones," is that virtually all the models are circumcised (if they're not, they appear to be...).A whole bookful of cut models--who are touted as a perfected state of grace, beauty and elegance of the nude male form--has got to be disappointing to those who appreciate the natural male form. The only natural-appearing model featured in the entire book (that I could find) is the very LAST one pictured--and I couldn't help but wonder if the only reason for its inclusion had something to do with size.Oh, I did see just one other "natural" photo, but only in one shot in the series of a long-haired, girlish-looking blond from slightly more of a distance, an outdoor shot. Perhaps this non-prominate exception was also included, again in the back of the book, for its jarringly different look (the fluffy long hair). Just a hint of diversity.

If you share the same idea of what is the "perfected state" of the male form (white, cut and youngish), and don't mind purchasing a whole book limited to just that, then this book is quite respectable. Buy it. Still, I wonder how it could receive such utterly superlative accolades in the other reviews. After all, inside its elegantly macho covers, it's rather ordinary in its presentation, not glossy, not strikingly presented (no margins, pictures covering the entire page--which in my opinion is not the most ideal presentation of black and white photos); so I could understand "very good" or even "excellent," but the best ever seen since the beginning of time? Not even close for this reviewer who is an avid collector of fine photography in diverse genres. Others obviously feel differently--and that's why we have reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Nude Male Photography
The photographs in this book are just marvelous.Gorman has a way of evoking each model's personality so well with his shots. There are also some lower level celebrities in the mix so that is cool.Christopher Atkins has a great spread. If you love the male form, you will love this book of breathtaking photos. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will keep me busy for a few years.
Although I've been playing guitar for years, this book is a real challenge for me.I'm determined to work it from the first song and not move on until I've mastered each piece.I've had it for a couple of months and I'm on song number three. The other 5 star reviews speak accurately about the significance of the music and the transcriptions and CD are a good value. If you are learning finger style blues or just need the tab to play it, then you should buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to learn John Hurt's style
I was interested in learning the guitar style of Mississippi John Hurt after checking out one of his CDs (Satisfied Blues)from the library. The CD did not come out of my CD player for over a month, and I felt driven to learn his style. This book was extremely useful in helping me learn this style.I have had the book about 4 months and can play about half the songs. The learning process involves following the tab and listening to the CDs over and over. The first song I attempted to learn (Spikedriver's Blues)took some time and a lot of patience. You have to learn to play the alternating base while putting in the melody lines. Now that I have practiced his style for four months, many of the other songs are coming much easier. The book includes the lyrics, so that after learning the song, one can practice singing over the guitar. I have been playing guitar 17 years, and haven't found a particular style that sucked me in so much. The CDs that accompany the book are excellent as well, and include some songs which I haven't found on many of his popular recordings. The songs are excellent.I actually practice more guitar each day, because of this style and this book.I bought an instructional DVD for Mississippi John Hurt as well, but use this book far more often.

5-0 out of 5 stars great instruction
this is a great cd/book combination to learn some wonderful blues tunes.the book is well written and the tablature is very easy to follow.the music isn't easy to play, but it's very well written and anyone who puts their mind to it will be playing some of john hurt's great tunes.the best part of the combination is the cd's.two cd's covering each tune in the book and all done by john hurt himself.it's a great way to learn or just listen.highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringin' it on home
When a guitar player hears Mississippi John Hurt's playing athey are generally struck by the simple beauty of it.To master the Hurt style is quite complex, but this book with its combined CD's (which feature MJH himself!) offer a good roadmap for unlocking the style of this master.Definitely not for the beginner, but one great feature is the way the tablature is presented. It is large and easy to read.To me, this makes a world of difference when attempting to learn a new piece using tablature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fingerstyle blues
I've had this book for three years or so.Lately, I've switched from playing mostly acoustic fingerstyle to electric blues, but I still like to get out the acoustic and this book from time to time.It has a bunch of Hurt's best songs, and the skill range is from fairly easy to quite difficult.

Keep in mind that you won't find complete tabs for all of the songs.Sometimes, you get just the 12-bar pattern for the song.Learning the breaks and extras will be up to you.But if you're a fingerstyle player with at least a little experience under your belt, Hurt's songs are a great way to build up your chops.

Not to mention that the book includes two CD's full of Hurt performing his music. If you like his music, then the purchase price is a good deal just for the CDs!The book also has an essay by the author who found Hurt living in poverty and obscurity, and brought him to New York for the early 60s folk-blues revival. And there are some great pictures in the book.

Please keep in mind that if you're a raw beginner at fingerstyle guitar when you get this book (as I was), even the easiest of the songs will seem impossibly difficult at first. The book simply contains tab.It has zero information on how to play the songs;just the tabs.If you're a raw beginner, and you're determined to learn to play Hurt's music, I suggest getting the book, and bringing it to a good teacher. That's what I should have done! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Shows you the importance of tracing patterns and behaviours
John Bradshaw really gets you curious about your family history. I found out more about my family background in a month than I had my whole life. He shows you the importance of tracing patterns and behaviours back through generations so you can become aware of your own tendencies and avoid repeating previous generational issues. Truly fascinating!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Answers to Questions That You Didn't Know You Had
I first read this book, June 1995, while sitting at the beach, far away from a store, and one month before I was to host a family-reunion.

My mind was searching for a way to be who I decide I am, while I do my best to respect each of my family members - a tall order, at best.

Usually, while I am reading a book, be that fiction or non-fiction, I have paper to write notes into. But I didn't have them, at this time.

One chapter into reading this wonderful book, I had to leave the beach, to buy a notebook, because there are so many powerful tools in this book, ones which I absolutely had to capture in my own written words, as the thoughts and emotions rose up.

And once I finished reading this book, and reviewed my notes, I was still amazed at how much more I knew about each of my family members, particularly the one family member who until then I wondered if he even had emotions.

You cannot passively read a book like this, and expect to heal what ails you.You must partner with John Bradshaw, to understand who you are, through who you have and may still be surrounded by.

I had one challenge, in reading this book:John Bradshaw advises readers to ask relatives about facts about other relatives. In some families, communication is so toxic that no one will tell the truth.

And when this is the case, in your family, as you ask yourself the questions, look around you, and expect to find the answer, through holding the question close to your soul.

Also, if you haven't read a book like this, and done extensive work, prior, you could look around you, and see who in your life is a mirror of your family members.

This will speak volumes to you.

Reading this book, prior to hosting my family reunion was so cathartic that my mantra became, "I don't care how many actually show up.I'll do my part to encourage those who do show up to feel welcome."

What I noticed, and continue to notice, as a result of having read this wonderful book, is that no matter where we come from, we can use that past to claim our voice. And doing this does require us to admit, over and over again, what was, and what we desire.

For those who believe that looking back in the past is blaming those from the past; dangerous; or, is a risk of being trapped by the past, I must say that having studied my past, I am free to look at my notes and see that what I was really doing was accepting who and where I was then.

It is in accepting our deepest pains that we automatically enhanced who we are.

The novel follows an unnamed nomenclature consultant who is asked to visit the town of Winthrop, which (it turns out) is considering changing its name. During his visit, the main character is introduced to several citizens attempting to persuade him in favor of their preferred name for the town. The novel has received mostly positive reviews from critics, with few negative comments. In a positive review for American magazine Entertainment Weekly, Jennifer Reese called the book "a blurry satire of American commercialism," adding that "it may not mark the apex of Colson Whitehead's career, but it brims with the author's spiky humor and intelligence." The book was featured among the 100 Most Notable Books of The Year for 2006, as published by The New York Times. Colson Whitehead (born 1969) is an American author. Whitehead was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and wrote for the The Village Voice for two years during his early career, and has since authored three other novels: The Intuitionist, John Henry Days and The Colossus of New York. Since Whitehead began writing, he has had his books and writing reviewed and mentioned in the The New York Times, New York Magazine, Harper's Magazine and has been a recipient of the MacArthur and Whiting Award. The book is set in the fictional town of Winthrop. The protagonist of the book is an unnamed African-American "nomenclature consultant" who has had recent success in branding and selling Apex bandages, which come in multiple colors to better match a broad array of skin tones. 5-0 out of 5 stars Tastefully done
All 3 stories are true to the original, and very well presented. Each story has a very unique, and tasteful music throughout that stirs your imagination, which only can be possible on audio CD.I want to collect the whole series, as this provides the perfect blend of music and the masterful storytelling.

3-0 out of 5 stars At least I found the Fairy Tale
East of the Sun and West of the Moon has always been my favorite fairy tale and I collect different versions.I was excited to find an audio version until I heard it.The music is very distracting and makes listening to the words difficult. There is nothing wrong with just reading a story. The human voice is melodic enough that you don't need to add all that other stuff. It changes the whole mood of the story and I really didn't like it. ...
