Excerpt: "China Girl" is a song co-written by David Bowie and Iggy Pop during their years in Berlin, first appearing on Pop's album The Idiot (1977). However, it was not popularized until it was rerecorded and released by Bowie on his album Let's Dance (1983). Bowie decided to put the song on his album when Pop, his old friend and musical collaborator, was in financial straits (due to his struggle with drug addiction) and was close to facing bankruptcy. Bowie decided to release the song on Let's Dance so that Pop could collect half the royalties (as co-writer of the track) and get back on his feet financially. An edit of David Bowie's 1983 version was also released as a single. Under the auspices of Nile Rodgers, the song was given a much more commercial sheen than Pop's darker, more roughly-produced version. It continues the theme established in the video for "Let's Dance". The song was again edited for single release, but attracted more attention for its striking video. David Mallets clip, shot mainly in the Chinatown district of Sydney and on a houseboat on Sydney Harbour, Australia featured Geeling Ng lying naked in the surf with Bowie (a visual reference to the film From Here to Eternity). The latter's bared buttocks caused the video to generate some lurid tabloid headlines, though the clip went on to win an MTV award. Versions of the clip included on subsequent video and DVD compilations are slightly censored. The UK single release reached #2 for one week on June 14, 1983, being kept off the top position by "Every Breath You Take"...http://booksllc.net/?id=3393993 ... Read more

Chapters: Iggy Pop, Mike Watt, Ron Asheton, Steve Mackay, James Williamson, Dave Alexander, Scott Asheton, Jimmy Recca, Zeke Zettner. Excerpt:Dave Alexander David Michael Alexander (June 3, 1947 February 10, 1975) was an American musician , best known as the original bassist for influential protopunk band The Stooges . Biography After his family relocated to Ann Arbor , Michigan from Whitmore Lake, Michigan , Alexander attended Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor where he met brothers Ron and Scott Asheton . "Zander" (as Alexander was known) dropped out after 45 minutes on the first day of his senior year in 1965 to win a bet. Later in 1965 he sold his motorcycle and went to England with his best friend Ron Asheton to see The Who and to "try and find The Beatles ". Alexander and the Asheton brothers soon met Iggy Pop and formed The Stooges in 1967. Although Alexander was a total novice on his instrument, he was a quick learner and subsequently had a hand in arranging , composing and performing all of the songs that appeared on the band's first two albums, The Stooges and Fun House . He is often credited by vocalist Iggy Pop and guitarist Ron Asheton in interviews with being the primary composer of the music for the Stooges songs "We Will Fall", "Little Doll" (both on The Stooges ), "Dirt" and "1970" ( Fun House ). Alexander was fired from the band in August 1970 after showing up at the Goose Lake International Music Festival too drunk to play . He died of pulmonary edema in 1975 at the age of 27 in Ann Arbor after being admitted to a hospital for pancreatitis , which was linked to his drinking. References in Songs Mike Watt mentions Alexander by name in his song, The Angel's Gate , on his 2004 album The Secondman's Middle Stand , by which time Watt had replaced Alexander in the reformed St... ... Excerpt: Iggy Pop (born James Newell Osterberg, Jr.; April 21, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and occasional actor. Iggy Pop is considered an influential innovator of punk rock, hard rock, and other styles of rock music. Pop began calling himself Iggy after his first band in high school (for which he was drummer), The Iguanas. As such, he is also occasionally referred to as "the Iguana". Iggy Pop is widely acknowledged as one of the most dynamic stage performers of all time. Iggy Pop was the lead singer of The Stooges, a late 1960s/early 1970s rock band who were influential in the development of the nascent hard rock and punk rock genres. The Stooges became infamous for their live performances, during which it was not uncommon for Pop (who traditionally performs bare-chested) to self-mutilate, verbally abuse the audience, expose himself and leap off the stage (the first or among the first to stage dive). The Stooges were unsuccessfully nominated seven times to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=157437 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Stooges (also known as Iggy & The Stooges) are an American rock band that were first active from 1967 to 1974, then reformed in 2003. The Stooges sold few records in their original incarnation and often performed for indifferent or hostile audiences. Nevertheless, the Stooges are widely regarded as instrumental in the rise of punk rock, as well as influential to alternative rock and heavy metal. Singer Iggy Pop and his often outrageous onstage performances were frequently the main focus of attention. They reformed in 2003, with bassist Mike Watt replacing the deceased Dave Alexander, touring extensively and releasing an album of new material. On January 6, 2009, guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead from a heart attack in his Ann Arbor home; several months later, the band announced plans to continue performing with later guitarist James Williamson replacing Asheton. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Tonight is a 1984 album by David Bowie, featuring collaborations with Tina Turner and a cover of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows". Critics slammed it as a lazy effort, dashed off by Bowie simply to recapture Let's Dance's chart success. Yet the album bore the Top 10 hit "Blue Jean" whose long-form video, a 22-minute short film directed by Julien Temple, reflected Bowie's long-standing interest in combining music with drama. It also featured the minor hit "Loving the Alien", a deep song about religious conflict and one of the few songs from Tonight to later return to Bowie's stage repertoire. The album also has a pair of dance version rewrites of "Neighbourhood Threat" and "Tonight", old songs Bowie wrote with Iggy Pop, both of which originally appeared on Lust for Life. ... Read more
