Product Description
Kathy Ireland communicates with moms every day: online, at the grocery store, at church, at speaking engagements, and on her company website. She is grateful that her conversations don't center around beauty tips or requests for autographs or advice on how to dress. Rather, she has the honor of hearing from real women who struggle with balancing the responsibilities of marriage, raising children, managing a household or career or both, and finding any time left to take care of themselves.

As the involved mom of three very active children, the supportive wife of an emergency room doctor, and a dynamic businesswoman, Kathy knows of these struggles firsthand. She credits her strong faith in God and her parents' love and support for any success she has today and dedicates her days to finding the solutions that can make life easier for busy moms in all phases of life. As she tackles the tough financial concerns families feel today and many other issues, Kathy offers empathy and encouragement. She shares stories from her own life and wisdom she has gained through her years from teenager with a paper route to successful supermodel to mom to entrepreneur with a dream for big business big business which was realized by building what Forbes now calls the "Billion Dollar Brand." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars SolutionsI
I enjoyed the book it helped with issues at hand and how to make a better life being a busy mom. I liked the financial part since I worry about not making ends meet. The rest was awesome.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Book Does Not Live Up to Its Title
We should not judge a book by its cover, but I do think it is fair to judge a book by its title. I was excited to get this book as I am always looking for ways to "get it all done" as a busy mom. I thought this book was going to help me get things done more effectively. This book has only added to all the things I have to do and does not provide any solutions on how a "busy mom" can get it all done.

Ireland tackles huge issues with just one trivial paragraph and then quickly moves on to the next item. Got a daughter with bulemia, get her help. Balance your check book more than once a month. Watch out for poison oak--but no mention of poison ivy, deer ticks (lymes disease), mosquitoes (west nile virus), etc. At the end of each chapter is a list of all the things a busy mom should be doing. But I ALREADY KNOW THIS! Ireland just gives you lists of things to do and no real solutions on how to get it all done.

I was greatly disappointed by this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solutions

I have always liked Kathy Ireland and was excited to read her book, Real Solutions for Busy Moms. I found it to be full of priceless treasures to be shared with women of all ages from all walks of life. Single young women wanting to have a family of their own someday and Mothers and Grandmothers will be inspired with new insights to apply to their own unique experiences.

The book begins with "Money Matters" and I must say not only was I delighted with the subject matter but it became one of my favorite chapters. I had often heard it said that one should get in the habit of saving money and paying yourself $10.00 per day. Kathy explains three reasons for chasing after prosperity illusions and adds some good advice on learning to sacrifice, saving your money and giving excellent affirmation to the reader that you're the mistress and your money is the servant. Kathy's idea of evaluating each potential purchase based on need rather than a feeling of entitlement is sound advice for sure!

All seven chapters of Kathy's book complement and build upon one another to make a great fort, if you will, or a firm foundation of blueprint plans and a guide to keeping your sanity. Each chapter includes a discussion section, a series of questions with answers to give you solutions that you need. Kathy shares from the heart her life's experiences on what works for her and is willing to share the nuts and bolts in her tool kit in finding practical solutions that can make life easier in our busy world. Did I mention Kathy shares recipes with us? You'll definitely want to read this great book... I loved it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Help for the Harried
Most of the solutions offered here are obvious, but I don't think that the usefulness of the book is diminished. As with many self-help books, the most useful thing that you may take away from this book is the realization that your problems, while seemingly overwhelming, are not unique. In fact, they are so common that people can make money writing books about overcoming them! And people do overcome these problems. And so can you.
The solutions offered are common sense, the sort that seem obvious when you take the time to read the book and think about your problems.
This is a Christian book, which may be a turn-off for some. It isn't heavy-handed: the secular can simply skip over the suggestions about consulting your pastor and the Biblical references. Likewise, the author's celebrity status may be an attraction for some and a negative for others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Experienced Moms Can Learn Something
I had heard a lot about this new book from Kathy Ireland. Having 5 children and a library full of parenting books, I wondered if there was anything new that I would learn. I was surprised! The book is laid out in very organized chapters, with initial advice and thoughts, but then specific ideas on how to use the parenting technique. I loved the practical advice and great ideas that she offered. She doesn't just write about fluff, but tackles serious issues that affect our teens. The book was a fast, easy read, and would definitely be a great reference to go back to. In addition, she writes with faith and how to tie that into parenting. Her style is as if she is there talking to you, friend to friend. Great book...highly recommend this to any parent! ... Read more

Product Description
Kathy Ireland first gained recognition as a supermodel, but today she is respected for her design talents and business acumen as CEO and Chief Designer of Kathy Ireland Worldwide. Ireland, independent and strong-minded, has an entrepreneurial drive coupled with the desire to break free of the skewed standards of the modeling business, that gave her the impetus she needed to start her own company. Her billion-dollar business began with a line of socks, then apparel, and today it extends into home furnishings, flooring, and accessories designed for women like herself — busy moms whose top priority is taking care of their families. She also dedicates her energy to a wide range of nonprofit organizations, many of them dedicated to improving the lives of women and children.

Powerful Inspirations
reveals the sources of Kathy’s strengths and enthusiasm, through insightful lessons that form a life-changing plan for her readers. In sharing her plan, Ireland also tells stories from her life, describing her close-knit family, the work ethic her parents taught her, and the sense of compassion they instilled in her.She offers an intimate portrait of her inner life and her spiritual growth, writing movingly of the support and comfort she has found in the Bible and other Christian teachings. She writes movingly of her failures and the lessons she’s learned while triumphing over them.Kathy’s account of her journey from the beaches of Santa Barbara to the boardroom, from supermodel to successful businesswoman provides readers the inspiration and encouragement to create a rich and rewarding life for themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but someone recommended it to me, and I bought it for less than $1.To be honest, I was wondering what a short, relatively plain woman would have to learn from a successful model/businesswoman.Still, I respected her for being a Christian in an industry where Christians aren't exactly plentiful.Worth a shot, right?

It's well-written, probably a combination of Ireland and her co-author.As she tells her story, I find myself identifying with her.Me, a 37 yo SAHM, identifying with a woman of Ireland's ilk.She makes you realize that, no matter who we are or God's place for us in this lifetime, we are all God's children and equal in His sight. These chapters are good lessons for reminding us some essential truths about Christianity, reminding me of some of the basics--faith, selflessness, family, and that God is always faithful, always there for us.

This book is a very good read, a good tool for nurturing/reinvigorating/starting your faith.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wise Lessons & Truths For Daily Living.
This beautiful young woman shares stories from her life (as I do occasionally); also writes about her failures and the lessons she learned while triumphing over them. She's the new Martha Stewart -- a former model who started her successful business with her own line of socks (my favorites). She added apparel, home furnishings, flooring and accessories designed for the busy women with families who depend on them."She doesn't just talk the talk, she walks the walk."

Her brand garned the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for consumer excellence. In order to accomplish things we desire, we need the love and support of others.

She lists eight lessons to get the reader started on the road to happiness and fulfillment.Powerful Inspirations:When God is with us, who can be against us?Powerful You: Failure is an education in itself; even with self-esteem, you will get hurt from time to time.Powerful families:With family, you are never alone.Powerful Answers:When you ask powerful questions, you may get powerful answers; be ready to act on them.

Powerful Changes:It's great to have goals, but don't forget to enjoy the journey.Powerful Financial Wisdom:Money won't solve all of your problems, but it helps along the way.Powerful Beliefs and Boundaries:Wise people constantly discover what they beleive and act on these beliefs.Powerful Joys and Sorrows:Without sorrow, true joy cannot be understood.

This is a powerful book to help realize your potential without all the stresses of life we all endure. She is a good teacher with her examples and experiences.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why Did I think this would be good?
I had such high hopes for deep and meaningful messages to be revealed within the pages of this text.I have no idea why - the Title must have spoken to me on some other level...
In the end, this book was just a long, drawn out, Thank You note to all the people who have helped to build the Kathy Ireland Empire.
Although its very nice of her to "write this note" its not something any of us who are not mentioned in the book, need to read. Save your money and move on to something truly inspirational.

Thankfully, my copy only cost me 99 cents - maybe that should have been a clue!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I thought this was such a helpful book. I really appreciate Kathy sharing lessons that she's learned in her life. She seems to have really tuned in to her own female intuition at times where she was unsure where she was headed and it really saved her and kept her grounded. I really admire that. She is very strong and I think everyone should read this book. You will surely at least learn something from it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, I cannot embrace you, Kathy
Though I haven't read this book, I feel the circumstances are all too cliche such that I can articulate some kind of review.Essentially, I agree with the reviewer who feels that Ms. Ireland, even if in possession of good intentions and wisdom, may be a little out of her league in offering life strategies to the rest of us.Kathy Ireland has received an overabundance of blessing in her life, and may not be in a position to coach the average guy or those who've endured enormous hardship and struggle with overcoming the legacy of a compromised life.Additionally, I've applied so many precepts to my life in the hope of improving my personal situation, but sometimes life isn't that simple. And I would not be honest if I didn't say I was tired of hearing about celebrities and their excessive fortunes, Ireland's Christian faith notwithstanding.I'm no socialist, but these stories confirm the fact that life is unfair and that a disproportionate amount of fortune is concentrated into the hands of too few people.Kathy, if you really want to share something with the world, I could use a few dollars.

Ditto to Brooke Shields, who feels her several-month bout with Post-partum Depression justifies her writing a book about it.

These folks don't know true suffering. ... Read more

Kathy O’Beirne was sexually abused at eight, labeled "troublesome" by a psychiatrist, and sent to reform school. After being raped by a visiting priest, she was transferred to a psychiatric hospital and subjected to electric shock therapy. At 12, she ended up in a Magdalen laundry, the notorious workhouses where thousands of other "troublesome" girls were incarcerated, abused, and forced to slave in horrendous conditions. In unflinching detail, yet illuminated by strength and hope, Kathy’s Story recounts her harrowing experiences, remarkable survival, and campaign to help other victims of institutional abuse. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst of the misery lit genre
I'm not suggesting that the current fad for 'misery lit' has not led to the production of other works that are no better, but "Kathy's Story" definitely is in the 'worst of the lot' category. As one may find from accounts in various prominent UK newspapers, Kathy's Story is a hash of unrelated incidents that make for a fictional horror story bearing little relation to the author's own life.

What I find most tragic in this is that there is ample evidence of the genuine horror stories many experienced in such institutions as the Magdalene laundries, and an inaccurate tale of endless victim-hood, spun from borrowing elements of others' experiences and mixing them into an incoherent whole, takes away from what others actually suffered. It seems a tactic to get endless personal attention as the winner of a whinge contest (no wonder Kathy reports she was much younger than any other resident in the first institution, for example - since no one would have been there at the age of 8), clouding the horrid and truthful reality others have reported in a search for justice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sucks
After reading several chapters, I looked up the author only to discover she had been discredited by her family and facts surrounding her life. I can't believe this book is still selling. From what I can tell, it is still discredited. I stopped reading it. I feel duped.

2-0 out of 5 stars Scary, but poorly written
While I'm sorry she had such terrible experiences, and it truly was awful what she went through, what a terribly written book! Full of trite statements, she writes from a total victim's mentality and obsesses over what could have been different if only someone would have talked to her...yet when given a chance to talk, she stays mute and wonders why she is subjected to more. I was glad just to have finished it and wondered if I could find a better book of the Magdalene Laundries since it seems she wasn't there for very long. She was just abused in many different places.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking
This is a shocking story of how parents could discard their children in Ireland.I'm happy I live in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!!
This is a brilliant, heart rending true story. I read it twice already and am sure I'll go back to it again. Buy it as you won't be disappointed! ... Read more

Product Description
Kathy O'Beirne's earliest memories are of being battered and sexually abused. Unable to confide in anyone about the beatings she regularly received from her father or about the boys who made her play dirty games, she became withdrawn and self-destructive, leading a psychiatrist to diagnose her as 'a child with a troublesome mind'. As a result, aged only eight, Kathy was removed from the family home and incarcerated in a series of institutions. In the first, a reformatory school run by a holy order on behalf of the Irish State, she was raped by a visiting priest. When she tried to get help, she was transferred to a psychiatric hospital, where the abuse continued, along with the administration of large amounts of drugs and electric shock treatment. At the age of twelve, Kathy was sent to a Magdalen laundry. These notorious workhouses operated in Ireland throughout the twentieth century and during that time thousands of young girls, some orphans, some pregnant and some considered 'at risk' in the community, were forced to slave in horrendous conditions.Locked away from their families and the outside world, many of the girls were cruelly punished and sexually abused by the staff or lay visitors. Kathy fell victim to one of these predators and gave birth to baby Annie just weeks before her fourteenth birthday. The little girl had a serious bowel condition but lived to the age of ten, providing the only light in Kathy's blighted life. After all that she has suffered, Kathy has now come forward to tell her harrowing story in the hope that more will be done to help survivors of institutional abuse. She recounts her tragic experiences in unflinching detail but what is most remarkable is the strength of character that shines through such a dark tale. It is this strength that has enabled her to survive and fired her continuing struggle for justice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kathy's Story: A Childhood Hell Inside the Magdalene Laundries
I learned about the Magdalene Laundries in a class at college. I could not find books on the subject in any public libraries or at any bookstores without special ordering them, which really made me wonder about the strength the Catholic Church still has over hiding its "dirty laundry." This is a true story, which seems impossible that it went on until the 1990's. This book makes you mad and sad all at the same time. Must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kathy's Story
Kathy's Story: A Childhood Hell Inside the Magdalen Laundries

This is a very-well-related story of one of the hellholes called a Magdalen laundry.Certainly a dark period in Ireland's history, which has been coming to light at least within the last two decades.

3-0 out of 5 stars heartbreaking story
there is a possiblity that this is a hoax. thousands of irish children did suffer at the hands of those there to care and protect them. this book shows how this was achieved, with fear, excuses, lies, control and hate by members of the catholic orders. whilst this book may or maynot be true, the fact is that the nuns, priest, christian brothers and those charged with doing their works, did abuse, physically, mentally and sexually, children in ways that the 21st century knows nothing about.
the real sinners are those that ignored it, those that instigated it, those that did nothing, because, real or a hoax, these things happened in institutions run by the catholic church. there were above the law, and the vatican knows. do they care?
highly recommend the god squad by paddy doyle, this is not a hoax. The God Squad: The Bestselling Story of One Child's Triumph over Adversity

1-0 out of 5 stars Truth or Lies???
Author's family say abuse memoir is cruel hoax.
Doubt has been cast on the 'childhood hell' in a Catholic institution recalled by an Irish writer
IT IS a harrowing story of a young woman's life destroyed by nuns and priests, and it has raced to the top of the bestseller list. But now a chorus of voices, including those of the author's own family, claim that the ordeal described by Kathy O'Beirne simply does not ring true and is nothing more than a cruel hoax.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and Painful but a story that needed to be told
Ms O'Brian tells a bitter painful tale of abuse, the most horrifying is that it is all true and Ms. O'Brian was not the only victim. Thousands of Ireland's daughters were treated the same way by their families, their country and their church. The adults who refused to believe that evil and sickness can come cloaked in the veil of religion.A society so cloaked in shame that a wife will stay with a husband so abusive thathe routinely starved, abused and savagely beat his children. A society so steeped in myth that a priest can openly molest little girls time and time again without fear of reprisal because no one could think the good father could ever do such a thing. A society where women who give themselves to Godare so revered and respected that they can operate not one not two but dozens of houses of horrors for girls many of whom their only crime is being born. SHAME ON IRELAND, SHAME ON THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SHAME ON ALL PEOPLE WHO HIDE BEHIND THIER HANDS AND FAIL TO SPEAK WHEN INJUSTICE IS BEFORE THEIR EYES. MAY WE NEVER BE THAT NAIEVE AGAIN ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Message of healing and hope for all of us
Every story, every mom to mom message and specifically every prayer is applicable to our time.
There is only benefit in the uplifting way it finds solutions for every issue.
I have not read the inside of a bible in 32 years. This date I know well because that was when I was excommunicated from the Jehovah's Witness Congregation for not attending and for not following their rules.
This book is a huge step for me in getting closer to reading the bible and maybe finding a church to go to.
Although I am not ready to take those extras steps just now, I do feel that this book opened my heart to it.
There is a solution in hope and prayer for almost every challenge we are presented with today.
You will certainly relate to the message of healing and hope.

A very good introductory essay by Francis McKee for this book illuminates Irish artist Kathy Prendergast's sophisticated ideas on art and life. Product Description
Public concerns about the regulation of the pharmaceutical industry have intensified in recent years. Paradoxically, these concerns center on the over-consumption of medicines of dubious benefit in Western societies and lack of access to essential medicines in the Global South.

By demonstrating how the analysis of pharmaceutical drug regulation can provide rich insights into the operation of power and politics in contemporary society, the contributors challenge the prevailing construction of drug regulation as a sphere of “policy without politics” and suggest alternative ways of regulating medicines.

Just two of the central questions that are explored in this book include: what are the implications for health that arise from the existing systems of pharmaceutical drug regulation?; what do the existing systems of drug regulation reveal about the power of transnational pharmaceutical corporations to shape regulatory and other policies?

The importance attached to placing the Irish regulatory system in its international context is reflected in the inclusion of chapters that consider regulatory trends in Australia, Canada and Britain, and chapters that address the implications of World Trade Organisation and EU regulatory policies. ...
