Product Description

A collection of Jackson's letters from prison, Soledad Brother is an outspoken condemnation of the racism of white America and a powerful appraisal of the prison system that failed to break his spirit but eventually took his life. Jackson's letters make palpable the intense feelings of anger and rebellion that filled black men in America's prisons in the 1960s. But even removed from the social and political firestorms of the 1960s, Jackson's story still resonates for its portrait of a man taking a stand even while locked down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Truthseekers
"Soledad Brother" is a powerful testament to the struggle of George Jackson to bring truth and find justice in a totally un-just system. The letters of George Jackson put you in that cruel jail cell right next to him. His words and his totally uncompromising spirit will stir your soul with emotions. From pain and anger, to sorrow, but he will also make you laugh ultimately though, he willeducate you. Because George Jackson is a teacher...a most compelling teacher. He teaches with love but he mixes it with a strong dose of rebuke; particularly against those who have the nature of a quisling.

He rips apart the falsehoods that create conflicts of Race and class. Then he relates the purposes for such divisions. He gives graphic insights concerning the "Civil Rights" struggles that marked the tumultuous, game changing, decade of the Sixties. Apparently, his warningswere not heeded and his letters could have been written today.

"Soledad Brother" is a must read not just for Black people, but for all people who are lovers of truth, justice and freedom!

Out of a large order this item arrived almost a week before the rest of the order. Good condition. Great price would definitely order from here again.

5-0 out of 5 stars More relevant than ever
In light of the fact that today, in 2009, the prison population in the U.S. is at an all-time high, with more people incarcerated in our jails and prisons than inthe entire rest of the world combined, with one percent of the entire adult population incarcerated and thirteen percent of all black males between the ages of 18 and 29, with over twenty-four hundred persons sentenced as juveniles in the U.S. to life without parole (Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch estimate that there are no more than 18-24 in the entire rest of the WORLD), this heartbreaking look at the reality of prison life is more relevant than ever. This book provides an incredibly eloquent window into the complete failure of the criminal justice system in the United States, and the dehumanizing and criminalizing effect of prison itself on both prisoners and guards. It is also a literary masterpiece that stands beside prison classics like Dostoyevsky's House of the Dead or Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.George Jackson created a portrait of prison so damning and true that it can lead to only one conclusion: prisons must be abolished and a new system for the rehabilitation of criminals must be created, or America will become just "one big prison yard," to quote Bob Dylan from his song "George Jackson."

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
This book allowed the reader a rare peek into the thoughts, opinions and emotions of a boy becoming a man in prison. The rage, the hormones, the injustice and the recklessness of the system and his childhood activities. His experience was valid while his words were eloquently laced with black liberation propoganda. The book is a bit mysterious in that there are letters to "A friend," and a person referred to simply as "Z."I have read about George Jackson in accounts others have written about him and they paint him as a giant political figure, ironicaly in the same unrealistic way the prison industry did. This book reveals Mr. Jackson as a young man who struggled with the concepts of who he was, where he came from, how he got there and how he could revolutionize the thoughts of others as an example for change through his letters and his actions. This piece was an important reading.Hard to accept while easy to believe - insightful.

Product Description

“Machining with Nanomaterials” focuses on the application of thin film nanostructures to the solution of machining problems. The solution to machining materials in an environmentally conscious manner is to use newly developed thin film superlattice layer coatings that provide a means to eliminate the use of flood cooling and the associated peripheral equipment. The practical significance of the development of these coatings is related to eliminating the need for cooling and lubrication by fluids and the need to machine at ever increasing cutting speeds. The effects of reducing tool life is a particular challenge in high speed machining, and this text explains how coatings can improve tool life, reduce machining costs, and machine in an environmentally acceptable way.

Product Description
Public attitudes towards crime, policing and justice remain 'hot' social and political topics. Low confidence in the criminal justice system challenges the legitimacy that underpins the effectiveness of the police and the courts. The police depend upon the authority they can command rather than the force they can deploy as a last resort. This book analyses the meaning, distribution and significance of trust in the police and the legitimacy of legal authorities. The book: presents data on the measurement of trust; drawing on information from 25 years of the British Crime Survey to highlight key trends and historical trajectories; explores the roles played by fear of crime, anxieties about neighbourhood breakdown, the mass media, and contact with the police; addresses the geographical distribution of trust; and shows the importance of public trust and confidence in generating legitimacy, compliance with the law and cooperation with authorities. "Just Authority?" provides the most authoritative and comprehensive analysis thus far, it also reflects on our time relating such findings to the London Metropolitan Police Service, drawing upon over five years of experience of working to embed a conceptual approach to public opinion into an overarching 'confidence' strategy. This book will be of interest not to just to students, researchers and academics but also to practitioners and policy makers who are tasked to engage with complex and shifting notions of public trust and police legitimacy. ... Product Description
Assurance of the safety and quality of foods requires the constant vigilance of scientists (and others) in the food supply chain to the potential presence of contaminants. Most frequently, contaminants are naturally incurred, e.g. mycotoxins resulting from mold growth, minerals of concern from soils in which the food is grown, and pathogenic microbes. Scientists worldwide have developed programs and analytical methods to minimize the negative impacts of naturally occurring contaminants on humankind.More insidious perhaps, is the intentional adulteration of foods by addition of non-inherent materials (either as a substitution for an authentic component, or simple addition) for economic gain, i.e. increasing the perceived, and thus the sales value of the food.Often these substitutions do not result in a food safety issue per se (there may be nutrition impact); however, numerous instances have surfaced wherein the economic adulteration resulted in a negative safety impact to the food supply.Melamine is an example of a macroscale adulterant, used to increase the analytically derived protein quantity of a food protein source. In as much as melamine will equate to roughly 400% protein utilizing current analytical technologies used for trade, adding small amounts along with other non-proteinaceous materials can result in an adulterated protein ingredient or product meeting the full certificate of analysis claims.Sudan dyes are an example of a microscale adulterant, added in small quantity to ingredients such as paprika or dried chili peppers to enhance the color, and thus the perceived value of the ingredient. This book defines or highlights some of the issues with natural contamination and economic adulteration and the response of the food community to these issues to minimize negative impacts to the food supply. ... Product Description
The fear of crime has been recognized as an important social problem in its own right, with a significant number of citizens in many countries concerned about crime. In this book, the authors critically review the main findings from over 35 years of research into attitudes to crime, highlighting groups who are most fearful of crime and exploring the theories used to account for that fear. Using this research, the authors move on to propose a new model for the fear of crime, arguing that such methods, which involve intensity questions (such as 'how worried are you about x ...'), may actually conflate an 'expressive' or 'attitudinal' component of the fear of crime with an experiential component and therefore fail to provide a comprehensive insight into how crime is perceived.

Taking an entirely new approach to their subject, the authors use existing quantitative data from the British Crime Survey to pose theoretically informed questions to help identify those who only 'expressively' fear crime, separating them from those who have the actual experience of worrying about crime. By exploring the extent to which each group has different social attitudes and backgrounds, and whether there is more than one social/cultural form of the fear of crime, this innovative and exciting title promises to reposition this aspect of criminology to a more prominent place. ...
