4-0 out of 5 stars A journey through the world of whiskey
Michael Jackson is THE reference, the pope of Whiskey world and an extraordinary author which bring us through the distilled world of malt and grain through various books. In this book, photos and illustrations are illuminating the parole and bring us in Japan, Canada or Ireland... The group of authors who take the task of updating his work have made a great job. This bring us to discover the backyard and evolution of those brand. It is more a table book to reed from time to time than an authoritative guide in taste. I had to go to Jim Murray book to fully appreciate the taste of Canadian Rye as I could not found any where what grain or malt was used in Schenley Distillery for example. It's seems important to know the large usage of corn to attend the sweet caramel taste of Canadian whiskey name Rye. I like the chapter of Enjoying Whiskey with Martine Nouet in the kitchen invitation. Recommended of course.

3-0 out of 5 stars great photos, geography passable, other info weaker
While this book is certainly an eye catcher it falls short of an exhaustive reference book.Perhaps it's a good introduction for the beginner, but I was hoping it would do for Whiskey what Clive Coates' The Wines of Bordeaux: Vintages and Tasting Notes 1952-2003 did for Bordeaux.Specific information with regard to process, grain choice, barrel selection and aging at each distillery was spotty. In some cases there was no discussion of various products from a producer.I am sure meaningful tasting notes for whiskey can be tricky, but I didn't find these particularly useful either. From time to time i noticed an insightful tasting comment and frequently obvious dominating characteristics were noted but many of the tasting notes seemed rather generic. While preference is particularly subjective I think more critical evaluation would be helpful in terms of conveying tasting information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Very informative and insightful.Wonderful reading and highly recommended if one loves history and whiskey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding overview
I just got this for Christmas and I've been enjoying it immensely!A little bit history, a little bit geography and little bit horticulture. It really does cover all whiskey production, although I think it favors Scotch a bit.I've been drinking Scotch for about a year now but I've only recently become fond of Irish Whiskey. The book covers it's production as well as the American, Canadian, and Japanese varieties (they make an outstanding whiskey in the Scottish tradition).

Coffee table-quality in size and art-work, I see myself enjoying this for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Overview of Whiskey
Whiskey offers a good overview of whiskey around the world, which is just what I was looking for. Jackson's writing style is as someone telling a good friend what he knows. It is not about him but the whiskey. It is very well illustrated with excellent photographs. You can describe something all you want but show me a picture and I understand.

This is a great book to start with. It covers how it is made, how climate and geology impact the result, and how to enjoy it. But, what I loved most was "touring" some of the great distilleries of the world. I'm planning my trip to Scotland and Ireland. Heading back to Kentucky where I grew up would not hurt either. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE AND INFORMATIVE - GOOD BOOK TO TAKE ON A TRIP
Well I have to say, for me this was simply a fun book to brows through and pick up bits and pieces of information. It is certainly not the beginning nor the end of beer books, but like all of the Eyewitness books, it is a class act and you really cannot help but learn while reading.

I am not a big beer drinker and am certainly not a beer gourmet, aficionado, or expert in any way.I like beer but when I drink it I do so very selectively and indulge in relatively small amounts; usually no more than two glasses at a time. Now that being said, I am adventuresome in my beer drinking and am constantly trying any new brand that I come in contact with, both foreign and domestic. For the life of me I cannot even pronounce the names of some of the brews I have tasted over the years. This is sort of a pity because when I have found a special drink that I like, I cannot remember the name of the thing. This work, on a limited scale, can help me solve some of that problem.

The format used in this work is pretty typical Eyewitness. We have a good short history of beer, an overview of the brewing process which includes methods from different countries and regions and different grains and additives used now and through the ages. This was all quite interesting as I now know why I am tasting what I am tasting.

The book then goes on to give a short review, country by country, region by region of some of the known, and in some cases least known brands of beer in the world.Of course, like any such work, not every product of every country you are familiar with will be addressed here.As has been pointed out by other reviewers, some great beer brands have been excluded or one reason or another. Now this may upset those of you who are true followers of this delightful drink, but for me it did not matter much.I learned of some brews I have never heard of nor seen and now have high hopes of crossing paths with them in the future.

The author has used lively and descriptive prose and I actually found myself thirsty for the taste of some of the products he was describing.Think of this book as a small travel book, a tour guide to stick in your tucker bag when you next hit the road.It is sort of like a bird identification field guide, except in this case it is beer you want to spot, try, and then record; at least in your taste memory.

As I said, this is a fun little book to read and flip through.I did learn much, but then again I did not know much to begin with, so that is probably not the best endorsement found here.I would just love to be knowledgeable enough to pontificate on this subject and dazzle you with my vast knowledge of the subject, but I fear I really don't know enough to pull that off....yet.

Bottom line:I enjoyed it and feel most others interested in the subject will also. This is a worthwhile read and a definite book to take with you on your travels as it at least will give you a starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beer Tasting Bible
We recently had a beer tasting party and used this wonderful book to hightlight our tasting of many different beers from around the world. The index makes finding the beers easy and quick. The tasting notes are concise and very descriptive. This book is perfect for anyone wishing to explore the amazing and innumerable nuances of beers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid overview of the world of beer
This is yet another volume in the current "Eyewitness Companions" series. Interested in the world of beer? This represents a nice introduction. As Michael Jackson, the author, says: "Like wine, beer is grown--it is an agricultural product, perhaps the first known to civilization."

The book begins with an introductory section, featuring a short history of beer.Back when humans were hunter-gatherers, when grain, water, and yeast interacted, this (Page 15) ". . .made people feel 'blissful.'"

The next section is called "From Grain to Glass." This part features the basic ingredients of beer, water, grain, and hops (among others)--plus yeast. Following this, "Beer Styles."Yummy! The reader finds out about Belgian wild beers, wheat beers (a nice variation!), porters and stouts, ales, and lagers. Next, "Enjoying Beer." One interesting discussion is on beer-hunting, finding really tasty, distinctive beers rather than the generic bland stuff most often drunk. As Jackson says (Page 62) ". . .ask for a beer, and the chances are you will get an insipid brew. . . ." So, one most "beer hunt" to find interesting varieties. The book also exp0lores the linkage of food and beer (just as some wines go better with certain foods, so, too, with beer!). For example (Page 68),"Try a Munich-style dark lager with sausage or pastrami. . . ."

Finally, the heart of the book.An enumeration of beers by country and region. This is not exhaustive.Unless I missed these, two beers I have enjoyed in Paris and Geneva are not represented--Cardinal and Kronenbourg. Beers are listed and described for some of the following: Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, British Isles, other European countries, the United States, Canada, Japan, and so on.For the most part, not much time is spent on any single beer. The tradeoff? Many more beers are described. So, one sacrifices depth with breadth.

In the end, this is a lot of fun! There are problems, such as some major beers not being covered (I may have missed it, but I did not see St. Pauli Girl) and very brief descriptions of different beers. But if you're interested in a look at the world of beer, this is a fine jumping off point.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of beer
I have to confess I really enjoy the Eyewitness Companion books -- they are handy, fact filled, and beautifully illustrated -- in this case, a picture can be worth more than a thousand words.

Pictures for beer -- what do they add?

With book in hand, you'll see they add a great deal -- the colors of the different types are especially helpful. We are lucky enough to have a retailer nearby in North Haledon that stocks over 250 different beers. This book was a great guide to the beers on offer.

The substance of the book is excellent, with very good descriptions of various types and styles. And the authors obviously love beer -- there's a warmth here that I find in the best travel books in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars little but powerful
here is a book that attempts to give you a crash course in beer brewing technique and history as well as give prime examples of beers produced all over the world. in a book the size of a large Mr Goodbar. but just as the good bar, this book left me fully satisfied. concise and sweet without spending too much time in a single world area or aspect of brewing. the sections on how to fully enjoy a new beer and the various brews of the world are most impressive and has blasted other books i bought on those subjects out of the water. jackson is the man, everyone knows it, this is the chance to buy a slice of his wisdom to tantilize your taste for more of his writings. i know it did for me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars michael jackson is not the king of whisky!
Although the technical layout of the book is well done, and most of the historical information contained between the covers is informative;but! if you want a one sided view on what is good to drink, this book is for you.Mr. Jackson has a particular taste for particular styles of whisky which he tends to rate highly.Almost as bad as Winespectator saying that each new vintage of California Cabernet is the best one yet.Mr. Jackson ignors the quality of lesser known, and possibly harder to find whiskies,to support the more widely known products of United Distillers:maybe paid a small sum to do so?Be that as it may he does point some people in the right direction, and if he is responsible for a initiate or two embarking o a trail of whisly discovery,I must applaud, for it is truly the best drink in the world!

3-0 out of 5 stars focussed on the rare...
I have the 1999 edition of this authors' book & it remains possibly the best edition. This new 2004 edition is more devoted to rare malts the likes of which many of us won't ever see/taste/afford. He unfortunatly focuses more on these rare bottlings at the expense of reviewing more commonly available (& affordable!) malts. For example,he doesn't discuss the 12,15 & 17 yr Bowmores, all fine,reasonable-priced & readily found. He fails to mention Laphroig's "UIGEDAIL" malt, offers poor reviews of "Fettercairn" & appears to have mis-stated alcohol content a few times. This edition is also more focussed on special-finishes; port, rum, claret etc.It also shows no shortage of his almost bizarre tasting notes "fiddlehead ferns with butter" and "starched linen".Yikes! Generally a good reference book with some decent photos & notes-of-interest... but not without it's disappointments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tasting guide on Whisky!
Since the beginning of the 90s, the number of single malt whiskys has tremendously increased. The pocket book is an excellent companion to the whisky amateur and will help you to select the whisky you want. Distillery details are limited to the essential, but contain enough details and are well written.
It is probably the most comprehensive, extensive and recent tasting book that you can get.
Please note that this book is a tasting guide and not on whisky's history! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love and Acceptance--A Precious Shared Gift
It's amazing how polar opposite many reviews of this book have been. I could have reviewed it with a very suspicious mind, but I didn't.Ms. Gonsalves comes across as credible.I love the simplicity of her writing it in letter form.I haven't read her other books, but I'm impressed enough with her writing ability and style to want to read more of her works.

She nurtured a dream of meeting Michael and through her letters to him made it come true. She's been written about in Tarraborrelli's book and the authenticity of his accounts raise suspicion, (particularly regarding Michael's dealings with the $phony Corporation), but I don't doubt his overall credibility.

Ms. Gonsalves shares with everyone who is interested that he was indeed a human being.Do I think he'd be upset by this book? No, I don't.She portrayed him with great love and affection and showed him to be sensitive and genuinely kind and caring (especially with regard to her own relationships and with her children). In the aftermath of his shocking death, I was drawn by an unexplainable desire to learn more about the real Michael Jackson. After 18 months of intense research, I'm convinced we lost more than the greatest entertainer who ever lived--we lost an extraordinarily caring human being who sincerely hoped to change the world (and he didn't just talk about it--he poured his heart, soul and millions into it). Thanks to an out-of-control media and a judicial system that is horribly flawed, he was slowly and systematically destroyed, both physically and mentally. Have you ever asked yourself why Michael had such difficulty sleeping?Would you be able to sleep after enduring decades of vicious assaults on every aspect of your life? With the intense focus cast on the cruel crime of "bullying" of late, do we not understand that Michael Jackson was the "poster child" for bullying? We just didn't recognize it as such.

Theresa Gonsalves became a trusted friend.Remember how he painfully shared his difficulty in trusting people, and how desperate he was to talk to someone that he'd often leave his home in Encino and walk the streets asking people to be his friend? (See Moonwalk)Is it hard to understand that he found warmth, humor and acceptance with this woman? She loved Michael, the human being. She was able to connect with him in an ordinary way and make him feel that she wanted nothing but his friendship.Do I believe they were intimate?Yes, of course.Sure he had strong religious convictions and may have been conflicted in what spontaneously happened, but he was a human being with physical desires.Everyone desires to be loved and experience real intimacy. To think that Michael didn't want that, too, is delusional. To be perfectly frank, I'm glad she shared about their intimate encounters.I am so sick of hearing the same old horrible lies about him.I would have much rather heard countless stories about his sexual exploits with women than to have him accused of such unthinkable acts that he cruelly endured on not one buttwo occasions. He valued his privacy but I don't think he'd be embarrassed about this book. His heart was filled with love and compassion.

No one in his or her right mind would ever want to have the kind of life Michael endured.Even though he married Lisa Marie Presley and probably loved her very much, fame destroyed his chances to simply be a husband and father and enjoy a family life. What he got was deception and heartache.I believe he treasured his friendship with Ms. Gonsalves--a friendship that was genuine and yes, ordinary. What I find particularly moving is that these two found each other without desperate searching--fate brought them together on several occasions. He experienced normalcy--real love and acceptance for just being Michael Jackson, a flesh and blood man.

Her account is very real and loving to me.She did not write this in a cheap, exploitive way. There's nothing trashy or distasteful about it.

Sadly, I wish she could have been a stronger influence in his life; he might still be with us instead of being cruelly and negligently "killed" by the fame monster.I cannot imagine how his death affected her.

God bless you, Theresa Gonsalves.Keep your faith and determination and may God restore you to good health.

Thank you for loving Michael.

5-0 out of 5 stars WISHING I WAS IN HER PLACE
When we know so much about his music, I wanted to know a little more about the man and I found it in this book. What made the book enjoyable for me, in spite what critics say, is the warmth I found in knowing that even for a short time he had at least one person in his life who wasnt there to just take from him. Keep smiling Ms. Gonsalves. I look forward to reading your other works.

1-0 out of 5 stars lack truth
I was hoping to read MJ's initmate words too. This was not so. Many people have written to MJ over the years some close, some not. So for me this book was total waste of time and money. The only reason it sold was, people really thought the woman had hidden secrets about him. Say La V. Where are his reply to her letters? The only reply is Latoya's.Come people let's get real. Where is the truth to all of this?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book
From the moment I opened this book to the end, I loved it.This book is well-written and I found myself wanting to read more. The photos took me back in the day to a much more innocent MJ.I would recommend Remember The Time to anyone who wants a positive view of a young Michael Jackson -- not what the media ultimately made him. This book is romantic, entertaining, and just REALLY GOOD!!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book

Product Description

The explosive definitive account of the Michael Jackson saga, chronicling the King of Pop's battles against child molestation charges from 1993 to 2005, from award-winning journalist

Diane Dimond, who broke the story first, over twelve years ago

Michael Jackson has long captured the world's attention, first as the dynamic lead singer of the Jackson Five, then during his highly successful breakout solo career. But somewhere along the line Jackson transformed himself into something hardly recognizable and was investigated -- not once, but twice -- for crimes we could hardly imagine.

Even now, after his unexpected acquittal on multiple charges of child molestation, there is a sense that the real truth behind the allegations is not known. The character of Michael Jackson -- from his humble beginnings to his rich career and the birth of Neverland Ranch -- is destined for great debate among fans, journalists, historians, and psychiatrists for years to come. In the meantime, there is Diane Dimond, the journalist of record on the Jackson case.

In November 2003, when the Santa Barbara county sheriff's department conducted another raid on Neverland Ranch, Diane Dimond and her camera crews were the only ones there to capture the moment and report the news to the world. Now, for the first time, Dimond recounts the multifaceted details of the Jackson case, utilizing her extensive notes and sources. What she tells us is a shocking story.

Be Careful Who You Love will take you behind the scenes and into the courtroom of one of the most controversial cases of the decade, while giving readers a dramatic glimpse of one reporter's vigilance and unending quest to uncover the truth. ... Read more

I hated this book.It is full of lies and I couldn't even finish reading it.I threw it in the trash where it belongs. This lady, or whatever, needs to back up and regroup. She obviously knows nothing about the kind of person Michael Jackson was.If only she was half the person he was.Save your money folks and do not buy this book. You will be very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
You can always tell a good book on MJ. His fans always give it only one star. I`m giving this book 5 stars because someone needed to say it, and it`s all said in this book. I praise the woman who had the guts to write this book because it would have taken alot of courage to do so, knowing that she`d be ridiculed and possibly her life threatened. I was once an MJ fan but not anymore because i just can`t ignore the suspicious private life this guy lead. There`s just too much evidence and speculation pointing towards him doing illegal things to children. Yes, this man was the king of pop, but his crown should be taken from him because of the hurt he`s caused so many children and their families. The only defence Michael Jackson`s legal team had was that his accusers were after his money. That`s not the point. Even if MJ`s accusers were after his money, that doesn`t mean that they were lying now does it? If any rich person hurt one of your family members then you`d want some money/compensation off them too wouldn`t you? Notice how it`s only very young girls and gay/ bisexual guys who think that MJ was innocent. Ask a more mature aged father or the author of this book (who`s studied MJ`s life) if they think that MJ was innocent and i`m sure that their answer will be totally the opposite to a young girl MJ fan or an older gay male MJ fan. Latoya Jackson is the only decent person of the Jackson family because she is the only one in her family to break the family`s code of silence on MJ. Remember her press conference in Tel Aviv Israel where she admitted that she`d seen evidence of her brother being a pedophile? Oh, that`s right, her husband made her say it. Well, if her husband made her say it, it still doesn`t mean that she`s lying now does it?

1-0 out of 5 stars People Who Believe This book are Blind
This book was so one sided and didn't even tell the truth about what happen in the court room. It's funny she only interviews people that MJ fired but people like Karen Faye, Jennifer Bratten, Travis Payne, and many others are written off as ''fans'' of his when they spent more time with him than anybody. Diane is a sad person. God don't like ugly!

1-0 out of 5 stars Tabloid sensationalism at its finest
This book is not even worthy of being called a book. It is just pages of absolute misinformation and fabrication bound together. I can only reiterate the comments of other reviewers and advise to steer well-clear of this one. The author is a notorious tabloid journalist whose claims have been openly proved to be false. If you want and balanced and objective view of these events which is not heavily tainted by mainstream media bias, I highly recommend Aphrodite Jones' and Geraldine Hughes' work. Don't waste your time, let alone your money, on this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Title should be "Outside" the Michael Jackson Case
Diane Dimond calls herself an "investigative journalist".This couldn't be farther from the truth. If she were a true investigator, looking for the truth, this book would have been written completely differently. There are so many facts that conflict with what she says, and her book is so filled with biased presumptions, speculation, inuendo, and conjecture, even the most open-minded reader would have a difficult time not being pursuaded in her direction.Another book has been written by someone who was literally "inside" the Jackson case, entitled "The Michael Jackson Conspiracy".If you are a Diane Dimond fan, at least do yourself a favor by reading a book with another viewpoint. It's only fair. ... Product Description

An international star from the age of 11, Michael Jackson’s story is one that stretches the boundaries of credibility, even in the larger-than-life world of megastardom. The eighth child of the Jackson family, and already a major recording star with the Jackson 5, he began a solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group. His 1982 album Thriller became the bestselling record of all time, and four other solo studio albums are also among the world's bestselling records: Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995). The first African American entertainer to amass a strong crossover following on MTV, Jackson pushed the boundaries of the rock video and popularized a number of revolutionary dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced many hip hop, pop, and contemporary R&B artists. One of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, Jackson’s other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records—including one for "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time"—13 Grammy Awards, and 13 number-one singles in his solo career—more than any other male artist. His highly publicized personal life, coupled with his successful career, made him a fixture in global culture for almost four decades.

This is NOT another "me-too" book with nothing new to say, written only to capitalize on the death of Michael Jackson. This is a thoroughly interesting and enjoyable review of Michael's life that focuses a little more than most books on the music and the people Michael worked with. The author does visit the highlights and major events of Michael's personal life, but always with an attitude of respect toward Michael. The overall thrust of the book, though, is a history of the music and those who made it happen. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The book is too thin!
The book contains a lot of large and beautiful photos and words of other celebrities on MJ. Paul McCartney once said:'I will not and Michael too will not be defeated by the media mania....' Jane Fonda said something like MJ built the zoo, watched cartoons... to maintain his creativity. To fans, these words are soothing. Such beautiful comments can seldom be heard after 1993. But the book is too thin and contains so little information that can hardly fulfil my appetite.

"The real beauty of this book is that the thinking does not stop... deep in the thickets of philosophic references. Instead, true to the spirit of phenomoenology, we are provided with provocative accounts of how such thinking flows in contemporary anthropological practice." -- XCP - Cross Cultural Poetics

In this timely collection, thirteen contemporary ethnographers demonstrate the importance of phenomenological and existential ideas for anthropology. In emphasizing the link between the empirical and the experiential, these ethnographers also explore the relationship between phenomenology and other theories of the lifeworld, such as existentialism, radical empiricism, and critical theory.

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous host, Robin Leach, called it the 'sale of the century'. It was the real estate transaction that made Michael Jackson the owner of what would come to be called the Neverland Ranch. I am the realtor who made that sale. This story is about Michael Jackson, whom I first met when he was in his teens, and how I helped the King of Pop make his dreams come true and acquire his dream home, Neverland Ranch.Michael Jackson was one of the most brilliant men I have ever known in my life, certainly not the Wacko Jacko described in the media. He was so thoughtful and decisive as a client that he was a joy to work with. He is the only celebrity client that really knew what he wanted - where, when and how.I hope this exclusive telling of my friendship with Michael and the extraordinary adventure that was the search for Neverland will reveal his true motivations and intentions, and it is my hope that you will enjoy this book about Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!
This is a wonderful book!Made me want to hear more of her stories with Michael.Showed a different side of the King of Pop!

4-0 out of 5 stars Short but good.
I have never read a Michael Jackson based book before, but of course I have been curious I mean he is the "King of Pop."I found this book to be a very quick read (less than 100 pages only) and very positive. The book is told by Gloria Berlin who is the real estate agent that helped Michael Jackson purchase Neverland Ranch. It is her personal memories of Michael and even how her son used to play with Randy Jackson. The book is very sweet and the memories are nice, a very different side of Michael as he has been portrayed lately. The book is not technical and doesn't go into total specifics for purchasing a house, but tells the story more of from one friend to another. There are even a few black and white photos in the middle of the book. The book talks about how Michael was an animal lover, enamored with Elizabeth Taylor and how he has grown.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice but overpriced
It's a nice read. The author seems a little naive from the way she tells the story, but she paints a very endearing picture of Michael. You get to glimpse into his character, get the feeling of his kindness, energy and sense of humor. You get to know what kind of person that dreamy and a little mysterious boy from the "Unauthorized interview" really was.
The only drawback of the book is that it's really thin - 100 pages printed in a huge font (as if for children) - it reads in less than an hour. By the sheer amount of text it should cost $7, not $17.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute little MJ book
I enjoyed reading this little book, written by someone who actually knew Michael and worked with him. It's fun to read, positive, and had some tidbits of knowledge about Michael that I didn't know, so that's good too.

4-0 out of 5 stars In Search of Neverland
First of all let me say, If you're looking for a long book, this isn't the one for you. This book is short. I read it in no time at all. If you want to know why Michael really bought Neverland, and what better source than the real estate agent who helped him find it this is definitely a book you will like. Ms. Berlin had known Michael for years before she helped him find his dream home and shared some beautiful adventures with him. If you're looking for a piece of feel good info about Michael and his search for a home, I highly recommend this book. I for one have had enough of the negative BS. out there that people are pushing in a effort to make a quick buck off of Michael. There is so much hatred, lies, and just plain nastiness out there. It was so good to see this book. Only wish had been longer. I loved it. It made me feel good. And what's wrong with feeling good about Michael? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diverse Opinions are Refreshing
For once a book that doesn't blindly praise Michael without ever acknowledging the variety of feelings people have about him. I liked Billie Jean as much as the next person but was not a big fan- I was more inclined to believe he bought his way out of prison. Now, thanks to Lorette's essays I have a better understanding of how con artists preyed on a man who was, by all evidence, innocent. I also didn't know much about his charity work. That said, temperamental fans won't like the fact that not every one of the 51 writers worshipped the ground he walked on. Many wrote about what the tawdrier elements of the Jackson phenomenon said about the excesses of capitalist culture, questioning the contrast between society's celebrity philanthropy and self indulgence. Considering the stature of some of the writers, these were welcome reflections. For example, Georgianne Nienaber is a Congo war journalist who wonders aloud why 45000 people die each month in the Congo but all the press is focused on this one man. That's a valid question. Chris Hedges, who writes for the New York Times no less, says, not unsympathetically, that capitalist excess and the fame machine drove Jackson insane. I had read this article online and watched with fascination as the army of devoted Jacksonites lambasted Mr. Hedges for what they found "one of the most offensive" articles ever written about Jackson. This man who has traveled to fifty countries and been at war would know a thing or two about insanity and culture that they don't, but anyways.

The impressive lineup of writers features some well known poets as well. There were several writers questioning Jackson's engagement with children or the sad deconstruction of his face/race. Luzajic contradicted some esteemed African American thinkers with a lengthy defense proving Jackson's great pride in his heritage. But she wasn't afraid to show diverse and opposing viewpoints, offering a realistic pastiche of emotions. This is not for fans who are looking for "forever an angel" type of shluck. It's a mixed bag of tricks showing how profoundly Jackson touched some and just as deeply rankled others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful and diverse collection of essays
I had the privilege of contributing to this anthology as cover designer. I just wanted to drop by and say that I enjoyed a very lively variety of writings about the King of Pop. Being one of those rare people who didn't grow up with Michael Jackson's music, I'd never paid much attention to him one way or another. So this collection was a great way to engage with a spectrum of ideology on Jackson's cultural contributions. I really enjoyed Jess Nevins' "Life as Performance Art," an essay in which he examines how Jackson's life played out like the hero-villain figure in Gothic literature. Lorette's "Easy Target: the Humiliation of Michael Jackson" convinced me that Jackson's accusers were all grifters. I enjoyed the more personal stories, too- they showed how much impact MJ had in the everyday life of people, how emotional the connections were. A fascinating tribute, and I'm glad I was a part of it in some small way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks thoughtful analysis of Jackson's contribution
I purchased this book thinking that I would be getting a thoughtful analysis of Michael Jackson's meaning to our culture. What I got was a collection of essays that largely regurgitate the tabloid gossip that has been spouted for years about this amazing artist. I found it to be judgemental based on unproven rumor and innuendo. There were many inaccuracies as well. Most of the essays included were written either prior to his death or shortly thereafter. I felt that not enough time had passed to measure the words against other evidence that came later with publication of Michael Jackson's autopsy, the release of the FBI files on him, and the documentary "This Is It."

Some of the essays left me wondering why they were included and what the author meant to conclude. There was a good essay by Lorette C. Luzajic that briefly reviewed Michael's charitable work. She also did a rehash of the 1993 allegations and 2005 trial regarding sexual molestation which was a fairly accurate summary but with a little research this information is readily available to anyone on the internet. "Michael Jackson and the Toxicity of American Culture" by Dr. Pamela D. Reed was partly okay in concept but the speculative and gossipy nature of it was very unappealing. Her conclusions about black self-loathing do not take into consideration his health issues with both vitiligo and lupus and are mere speculation. Her jabs about the paternity of his children are irrelevant and unproven and are just more tabloid gossip. The essay Onome, "Michael Jackson: Performer, Shaman, Wounded Healer, Genius" was good but I had read that before. I was especially repulsed by the use of "insane" and the focus on speculative drug addiction as if the author was qualified to judge Michael Jackson's mental and physical health.

The author of this book is accurate in saying that the key to Michael Jackson are in his music. Too bad that she nor medialoid were not listening. It is in the music!!

I am not sure what audience this was meant for but as a supporter of Michael Jackson, warts and all, this was a major disappointment. I would recommend that anyone who is committed to thoughtful discourse on Michael Jackson's impact on our culture and his contributions should stay away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another gem from Lorette C. Luzajic
This is the most thoughtful and beautiful book about Michael Jackson that I've come across. I follow Luzajic's blogs about interesting people, and when I learned that she was compiling this anthology, I was first in line. It's an amazing variety of ideas on what Michael Jackson means, why the role of biggest superstar in the world fell to him, and why he fell from our pedestal. Various writers examine whether he is worthy of the hype, whether he is guilty or innocent, the themes and archetypes in his work that reveal the things he didn't reveal, plus the questions of racial identity, illness, gender confusion and more. The lineup of writers is really interesting- I enjoyed reading about MJ as a dad by his friend Jonathan Margolis; I enjoyed the insight of Congo human right journalist Georgianne Nienaber. I also enjoyed the poetry of Carolyn Parsons and Samuel Peralta. This is a gift to all of us, showing how diverse Jackson's effect really is, showing our own participation in his making and breaking. It is lovingly made, and fit for a king.

This was the first book to give single malt scotch the systematic, in-depth treatment reserved for wine. It will help you to discover the differences between the ''lightly earthy, nutty'' palate of the 10-year-old Fettercairn; the ''elegant, dry'' 10-year-old Glenfarclas; the ''full, smooth'' body of the 1971 Millburn; & the ''sweetish, gingery, warming'' finish of the 12-year-old Oban malts. Illustrated with photos & labels, this book is written in an entertaining style by Michael Jackson, an expert on alcoholic beverages. The essential reference for the discerning scotch drinker, & for those about to begin their exploration into the pleasures of single malt whiskies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Single Malt Guide
This is a great introduction to single malts, with all of the major distilleries listed. It's impossible for a printed guide to keep up with all of the new single malt expressions, but this is good place to find out about any distillery and it's "foundation" whiskeys. I have yet to find a distillery that is not listed in this book.

Echoing the other reviews posted here, I'd just like to add that this book is one of the best of its kind.Unlike a lot of books about scotch whisky which tell you loads about the distilliries yet nothing about the relativeworth of the drams, this book calls 'em--the good, the mediocore, and thenot so good.Mr. Jackson is an outstanding writer, by turns witty andintelligent, and his passion for scotch is evident and infectious.Thebeautiful layout work complements the writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this how we treat human beings?
Honestly, I wouldn't "read" this book if someone paid me handsomely. It doesn't deserve a star--instead for something so vile, so insulting, you should offer a circle with a bold red line through it.Not!Do Not Go Here!

It hurts me deeply that people have treated another human being so heartlessly. There's something very wrong with a society that finds no harm, no disgust in printing egregious lies and hateful stories about any person but especially about Michael Jackson. After his death and seeing him perform in This Is It, something happened to compel me to search for and study the real person, the real, live man who happened to be the most talented entertainer who ever lived. What I have discovered is an extraordinarily caring, gentle, loving human being, a beloved father, brother, son, friend and idol to millions of people all over the world, from every race, gender, background and walk of life, and a genuine humanitarian who adored children.

Michael Jackson was FORCED to be "different".His fame catapulted him into a world that soon became a prison to him.He would never be able to do anything ordinary again. He was denied a childhood. He was simply a gentle, caring man that viewed the world with the innocence of a child--that's why he loved being around children and felt more comfortable with them than the conniving, devious adults who attached themselves to him like blood-sucking leeches, ultimately contributing to his shocking and untimely death.

I wish I'd live to see the day when pathetic excuses for news like the National Enquirer and other tabloid trash fold up and are replaced with honest, truthful journalism where authors care about what they write and how it is received by the reading public and are sensitive, too, to the obvious feelings of those who they are writing about.

What is wrong with us that we actually enjoy destroying another human being's peace?

Parents all over the nation are concerned about "bullying" of children in our schools yet we see no harm whatsoever in allowing "adults"to put out sensational stories for all the world to see, knowing they do nothing but destroy!

Michael Jackson was a human being just like you and me. How would any of you like it if suddenly you found your face on the cover of a cheap tabloid and inside stories written about your personal life that were nothing but fabrications and pure lies? It's done. You can't take it back.Even suing makes little sense.Imagine the hurt your family would feel, the embarrassment of your friends and those close to you?

I feel sorry for us as a nation if we continue to feed on these disgusting rag papers like vultures fighting for a piece of a rotting, dead animal.

Michael, you were far too good for this world.God sent you here as a messenger of goodwill and to spread the message of love and kindness through your incredible music and dance.Sadly, like Jesus Christ, we crucified you.

Sometimes I'm ashamed to be human.Amazon, I wish you'd stop offering this book.Free speech is one thing; systematically destroying another human being's character and life is a completely different matter.

Shame on anyone else who buys this "bound" glob of garbage! You want to know the real truth about Michael Jackson, read Redemption or Michael Jackson Conspiracy. The truth will set you free!

1-0 out of 5 stars Should have know..
Seeing the source of this book I should have known what garbage it would have been. and was. I am a Michael Fan, but love to read the good, the bad and the ugly about him. the ugly I usually just laugh about knowing there is not much truth behind it.. LIKE THIS BOOK. Most of the books is quotes from others book. Latoyas book, Michaels book.. and whatever is not from that is from an "UNKNOWN SOURCE" which is really all they have to quote .. b.c idont believe that source ever existed. this book is garbage, but does have some nice pics of MJ in it which i think they thought were bad pictures, but I enjoyed them!

1-0 out of 5 stars GARBAGE!!!!
I cant believe that as a fan I was curious and actually read this book. I have never in my life read anything this filthy. This is not a book, this is right out of the National Enquirer and is only full of complete and utter crap. I have never sworn so much while reading a book. Everything was maniputated and so many of the "facts" presented were wrong, completely false, pulled out of someones behind, I swear. It seemed unedited also, as the grammer was bad at times... I still cant believe that some people believe this absolute rubbish. This book, is a horrible insult to the greatest musician the world has ever known and ever will know. THIS IS GARBAGE!!!
DO NOT READ IT!!! THIS BOOK IS TABLOID CRAP!!!!
Just BURN IT!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Why was this book published?
This book is so boring that I did not even get to the end of it.The arguements in the book are not convincing because they are not backed up by evidence. And the grammar is terrible! I thought a book had to be read by at least five people at a publishing company before it can be published!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
There are a lot of Michael Jackson fans who are not going to like this book, but for those of us who are not blinded by celebrity this is worth reading. Whatever you feel about Jackson, this book is proof that he has lived a bizarre life, that he is not the man he appears to be in front of his fans and TV cameras. I found this book very interesting because it reveals the man behind the carefully crafted Hollywood image and it's not always a pretty picture. ... Read more
