3-0 out of 5 stars Short history of a forgotten man
One finds this book by accident rather than by looking for it.There probably aren't many people who know the name of the man who killed Bob Ford, assassin of Jesse James.Ford died in relative obscurity himself. His killer even more so.

This is a short book, only 119 pages, including the author's bio, acknowledgements, and intro.O'Kelley's life is apparently not easy to detail. His birth to a woman who married a man other than the father of his child, was the beginning of a troubled life.Born in Benton, Tenn., O'Kelley was sent to live with his mother's mother. There is speculation that he ran with the James gang as a young man. However, by 1892, he was living in Creede, Colo., where he met up with Bob Ford.Accounts vary somewhat on the specifics of Ford's death at O'Kelley's hands, but that fact is well documented.

This is an interesting biography of a character who lived and fought in the old west. It's a quick read, with some surprises.Readers interested in stories of this period, the border wars in Kansas and Missouri, the James and/or Younger gangs, will find this a nice addition to those histories. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great tale of the James Gang and their Northfield Raid
Looking for an entertaining read for your kids? Jan Schultz' Horse Sense is a great pick. Boys will love the daring bank robbery and posse ride that follows. Girls who love horses will enjoy reading about the Sasse family and their different horses. And what of Will's beautiful horse, Star? Has she been taken by the infamous James Gang? Will they hurt her? How will her new foal manage while she is gone? Will Sasse survive the hunt for the James Gang and live to achieve his dream of raising horses? The great thing is, by the time kids have finished this book, they have also learned about an interesting time in our country's history. What were the aftereffects of the Civil War on the American Midwest? What was life like in smalltown America? Perhaps the best lesson learned from this book is that people are not all good or all bad. They are often a mix of both, something Will has to learn the hard way. Enjoy! ... Read more

Product Description
"I was tired of an outlaw's life. I have been hunted for twenty-one years. I have literally lived in the saddle. I have never known a day of perfect peace. It was one long, anxious, inexorable, eternal vigil. When I slept it was literally in the midst of an arsenal. If I heard dogs bark more fiercely than usual, or the feet of horses in a greater volume of sound than usual, I stood to arms. Have you any idea of what a man must endure who leads such a life? No, you cannot. No one can unless he lives it for himself." Frank James, regarding his reason for surrendering --quoted from an October 5, 1882 "I never, in all my life, had anything whatever to do with robbing any bank in the state of Missouri." --quote from Cole Younger"They were brave fellows. They were true men. There was not a coward nor a liar among them... They might not have been angels... They were charged with many crimes of which they were innocent." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars researched?
This book is an interesting look at the life, times, and relationships of America's most famous outlaw. There is no way to know if all of the conversations in the book actually took place, but one could speculate that they're probably not far off the mark. Unlike many other books on Jesse James this one is more of a story format. Alot are bogged down with to many other historical facts (the war, border conflicts, etc.) that makes for slow reading on the subject (Jesse James). Not so with this book. It makes for a good story and interesting read by staying on the life of Jesse and not getting bogged down by to many other historical facts about the time. That being said however, there are some questionable facts here. It seems as though the author has either gotten a few details wrong, or just omitten a few. I have purchased and studied quite a few products (books and dvds) on Jesse and have become accustomed to contradictions between them. The contradictions in these other titles are minor and justifiable, for much of Jesse's life and career he and others were covering up their crimes with lies and as much confusion as possible. But this book seems to miss a few easy details. Having studied many other titles on this subject, I can almost tell by a list what details will be contradicting. This book has added a whole new list of inaccuracies. It seems as though the author has tried to keep the Jesse James legend being more of a victim pushed to a life of crime than someone who took matters into his own hands and not be a victim of the times. Bottom line, if anyone is looking for a factual book on Jesse this isn't it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superior Civil War Novel
This is he best novel about the Civil War I've ever read. While the various descriptions made this book sound somewhat clownish, it really is the story of two families of non-combatants and how they struggled to stay alive as the War raged around them. Funny, sad, touching, and excellent in all respects.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best western you will ever read!
This is actually the first book in the H.H. Lomax Series. I think this is the funniest western that I have ever read except maybe "Mixup at the OK Corral: (By the same Author).I cannot understand why this book is out of print. If you find a copy, buy it and don't lend it to anyone because you will want to read it many times and this is not a book that anyone will give back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like A John Wayne Movie
This is the funniest western I've ever read! My favorite along withLonesome Dove. I love his country sayings. I laughed out loud and was sorrythat the book ended. Didn't know this book existed until I stumbled onto itin a library. A Lewis book is like a John Wayne movie, based on history, spurred with suspense and spiced with humor. The perfect formula for anybook. I'd love to have the Lomax set! Why are they out of print???

Product Description

Born in 1883, the year after Jesse James was killed by Bob Ford and buried in his mother’s backyard, Homer Croy grew up near the James farm in northwest Missouri. He talked with many old-timers who knew Jesse and Frank James and their remarkable mother, Zerelda.

Eyewitness accounts (sometimes humorous) and Croy’s familiarity with the milieu that produced the outlaw brothers enrich Jesse James Was My Neighbor. Jesse read the Bible before he went out to rob a bank or train (Frank preferred Shakespeare), and he was honest except for those raids, according to Croy. The author follows the James boys, documenting their criminal activities and their human side while sorting out the growing legend. He adds a necrology of the twenty-eight bandits who rode with the James gang at one time or another.

4-0 out of 5 stars When a teen, this one influenced me in many ways...
Published in 1949, a copy of this one came into my hands around 1960, when I was 15 and ready to explore Jesse and Frank James in books instead of films. I was so impressed with it that I wrote my first fan letter, having found Mr. Croy's New York City address in a reference book at my local library. He wrote back, a short, typed note on yellow paper, and initialed it "H.C." rather than signing a full autograph. I no longer have this memento, unfortunately, although I kept it until just a few years ago, when I gave it and a companion book about the James' saga to a friend. Two years ago I had the opportunity to visit the James Farm and museum, not too far from Kansas City, and the Liberty, Mo. bank that was the first victim of what eventually became Frank and Jesse's chief profession. Those sites are fascinating and well worth a visit. As for the book, re-reading it at 64 instead of 15 does bring out its flaws, yet I still enjoyed it very much. Mr. Croy tried to include only stories of the James family which had some verification by his standards, which are not the standards trained historians apply today. But he interviewed, in the 1940's, a few people who claimed to know one of the brothers, and Frank's son and other kin who for sure knew them, at least in Frank's post-bandit career. Some of his sources were the children and grandchildren of men who rode with Frank and Jesse in the border wars, or chased them after robberies up to 15 years later. If the legend of the James Gang interests you, find a copy of this volume. Homer Croy was not a literal neighbor, having grown up some miles from the James land, but, being born the year after Jesse was killed, he was surely steeped in bandit lore from a young age, sharing the streets of small Missouri towns with James family members, victims, and friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Down home history.
Homer Croy wrote this informal biography of the James boys of Missouri, first published in 1949.The author uses homespun sources for many of the stories and anecdotes of Jesse and Frank, the Younger brothers, and their nefarious associates.Mr. Croy lived near Jesse's base in northwestern Missouri, hence the title. Croy was born the year after Jesse died, and considered himself almost a contemporary. He traveled to various towns and farms interviewing folks who remembered the Widow James and her famous sons. The result is a casual history, and reminds one of sitting on a front porch in small town Missouri while the old people spin tales.Lest one doubt the credibility of the sources, Mr. Croy takes care through newspaper archives and other, more objective sources to verify the facts. He also briefly examines the influence of Frank and Jesse on dime novels, art, and movies.Croy is forthright in his biases, but also keeps his tongue firmly planted in his cheek.Out in Missouri, folks truly admired Jesse and Frank, especially their low opinion of banks and railroads. It's doubtful that Jesse James was really an Old West Robin Hood, but the book never seriously suggests that as a fact.We can believe that Jesse's killer, Bob Ford, was a coward, and that Pinkerton men were considered polecats.Decent folks just didn't stand for that type of behavior. The book won't give the reader any particular insight, beyond the obvious, of the James boys and their motivations.Nevertheless, it's an entertaining blend of fact and folklore.Good light reading for students of Western history.;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining
I first read this book in grade school, UMPTEEN years ago, when , mostlyto annoy my Mom, I set about reading every book I could find on westernoutlaws. After my "Billy the Kid" era, I moved on to JesseJames.First I read the "scholarly" books with the ooky picturesof dead outlaws and Jesse's scary one-armed mother (her hand was blown offby a bomb lobbed through the family door by the Pinkertons.)Then I foundHomer Croy, who tells roughly the same stories, but with a wonderfullyhumorous and personal writing style.Stylistic, yes, and probably morelegend than truth. But of all the books, this is my very favorite.I wasso happy to learn it was back in print.I assume that Mr. Croy has passedon, but he hasn't, I'd travel to wherever he is to buy him lunch.Perhapsnot a "great" book in the sense of, say, WAR & PEACE, but agreat book nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun book on Jesse James

I borrowed this book out from the library and read it when I was 11, and it was what got me interested in Jesse James. But even for an 11 year old, there just wasn't enough information, that is, if you were or are a curious 11 year old like me. So, I read some other books on him like, Outlaws and Jesse James, by: Marley Brant, both of which i also recommend. There is no way in the world anyone has actually FOUND this book, let alone read it, so if you've stumbled upon this entry, post something, leave a marker if you will.Because for those in the know, that's what this is all about. There is an entire alternative sub-culture dealing with post-Civil War confederacy and hidden gold, clues and markers in rural areas, and something called Knights of the Circle (or something like that). This book, much of it as I understand it, wrong, deals with the conjecture that there really wasn't a "Jesse James."That was merely a nom-de-crime of a number of southern sympathiser (sp?) criminals.Possibly interesting stuff, but I'll wait for the one hour History Channel show. ...
