Editorial Review

Product Description
This is the story of the submarine Sturgeon, as told by her Captain, Lieutenant Commander William Leslie ("Bull") Wright, and here recorded by Carl Carmer, one of America's foremost tellers of tales. Carmer has captured the spirit of these men who fight in the sinister ocean depths. Yet there is nothing false about this story; Mr. Carmer has relied entirely upon his material to make its impact upon the emotions.

Going aboard the Sturgeon with her crew, you share their perils, their boredom, their humor, their irritability. For a while you forget your own prosaic existence and live with ordinary men capable of extraordinary gallantry; men who perform great exploits with unaffected simplicity and whose excitement at adventure is as keen and spontaneous as a schoolboy's.

Listen to them talk; in bars on shore, in the wardroom, the control room, the torpedo room. The dialogue is as real as the men who speak it.

"I can't help thinking what a damn good time a sub crew can have out of practically nothing," says Lieutenant Commander Chester Smith of the Swordfish. When you live with the crew of a submarine out on patrol you learn a lot about them, about their lives, thoughts, reactions. You learn what it feels like to sneak "on tiptoe" beneath the surface listening to your pursuers overhead, to sit tense and wondering while exploding ashcans pattern the depths around you. You catch your breath when, groping your blind way submerged between jagged rocks, you suddenly hear close by the pounding of surf against a reef. You learn, too, something of the burden of responsibility borne by a submarine commander; a burden immeasurably lightened because the crew never loses its sense of humor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great browsing about a famous outlaw event
In 1876 Jesse James and Cole Younger came to Minnesota to rob a bank.Cole Younger and his two brothers ended up in prison, with Jesse and his brother, Frank, fleeing for their lives.Three other members of the gang were even less fortunate, being left in the dirt, very dead.John Koblas's book explores all the reported sightings of members of the gang both before and after the disastrous attempted robbery of the bank in Northfield.Along the way, an interesting snapshot of southeastern Minnesota in 1876 is presented, giving a good feel for the people and the world they lived in.The research going into this book is very impressive, resulting in a book which is plain fun to browse through. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedia of American criminals
My favorite Aunt gave me the 1974 version of this book when I was a kid.I love short stories and this book is full of them.
I upgraded to the 1994 version (the latest I could find). It had everything plus many more modern criminals such as Berkowitz, Bundy, Dahmer, and Gacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read for the crime enthusiast
This book is a must read for any person who is seriously interested in the history of crime in our country. This book covers not only the most notorious criminals, but also hits on many other less-well-known criminalswho really do prove that crime does not pay.Very well written andresearched !! ...
