Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

Editorial Review

Product Description
With Reading Alcoholisms, Jane Lilienfeld has produced a ground-breaking cross-disciplinary study using the social, psychological, and scientific literature on alcoholism and family alcoholism to examine the novels of Hardy, Joyce, and Woolf. Each of these authors was directly affected by the alcoholism of a family member or mentor, and Lilienfeld shows how the effects of alcoholism organized their texts: through the portrayal of a protagonist in The Mayor of Casterbridge, through the denial of parental alcoholism and its silent presence in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and through codependent reactive patterns of Mrs. and Mr. Ramsay in To the Lighthouse. With the remarkable empathy Lilienfeld has for human dimensions of alcoholism, she demonstrates that "the narrative strategies in each of these novels at times mimic the behaviors and feeling states often arising from alcoholism." Without an understanding of the multidimensional nature of alcoholism and the transmission of its effects across generations, any analysis of the work of these three literary giants is incomplete. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An important book from a number of angles.
What Shays did for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in *Achilles in Vietnam,* Dr. Jane Lilienfeld does for alcoholism in her new book, *Reading Alcoholisms.*Lilienfeld's book reviews some familiar works of Englishliterature dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries through the lensof what we have come to know about alcoholism, both the "diseaseprocess" itself and its somewhat predictable effects upon alcoholics, their families, and others close to them.At the time the works Lilienfeldfocuses upon were written, there was no body of alcoholism theory;nevertheless, the authors of these works reproduced in painful detail whatwould later become familiar trajectories of personal and familial decline. One of the points Lilienfeld scores is to show that alcoholism as weunderstand it existed BEFORE we understood it.However crude andineffective present treatments for them might be, alcoholism (and, byextension, other addictions) are hardly the iatrogenic diseases someoccasionally claim.Lilienfeld allows her readers to think inductivelyabout evidence in the texts. One might sometimes wish for her to validateour thinking by drawing more conclusions for us.But that's a small gripe. This is a fine book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE!!WAY TOO GRAPHIC FOR A FIVE YEAR OLD!
My five year old checked this book out of the school library.Way too much for a five year old.Discusses listening to grandpa cry, touching grandma's hand - and it was COLD!Children playing capture the flag in a room full of empty caskets???I thought this book was terrible and am fighting to have it removed from the school library.

Probobly OK in the right situation...not just a leisurely book to check out from the library for the heck of it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Saying good-bye to Grandma
This book is a valuable reference for adults trying to explain to a child, what happens during the calling hours and funeral ritual. It also is a good book for a child who has lost a grandparent to read as well. It hitsmany aspects of loss, to include the phases of grief as well as the somecommon funeral rituals. The trip to and fromgrandpa's home allowedreflection and reminiscing by the family. In doing that the child was ableto learn more about grandma and to share her own times with hergrandmother..The story also shows, well ,the different phasesof grief among family members, ie the tears of the grandfather and themother. There were tender moments. One such moment took place with thechild and her grandfather when he spoke of his wife's love of fishing.Thechild was a comfort to her grandfather. The child at one point wasgiven the choice to attend the funeral and her decision to attend washonored. This inclusion in the decision makes the funeral less scary for achild. The child was a part of the process and was able to experience thefeelings of loss, as well as the ritual, the ability to reminisce and tocelebrate the life of the person who passed. This book was writtenvery simply and in a matter of fact manner. The illustrations were softand non threatening. I have added this book to our Hospice library andfeel that it will be a good resource for our community.

5-0 out of 5 stars The day that grandma died we drove to grandpa's house.
The day that grandma died we drove all night and all afternoon. On the way mom told stories about how grandma traped a ratcoon in the garbage can. She bought a new garbage can with a lid and fead that rascull scraps of foodevery day after supper.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very real example of the thoughts and concerns of children
This is a story of a little girl whose grandmother has died and she has to travel with her family for the funeral. It takes her through the stages of wondering what it is like to go to the funeral home and to see her parentsand grandfather going through some of the grief. It is a very realisticapproach to way Americans approach the process of grief. This includes thefuneral home, the cemetery, and even a consolation breakfast.

This bookallows the child to see death as a real part of life and allows for thediscussion of death with children. They will see how even when people aresad they can still laugh, remember, and talk about the person who died. Ithelps the healing process.

Excellent book for young children. ... Read more

37. Thomas Hardy, Femininity and Dissent: Reassessing the 'Minor' Novels

Product Description
This challenging study of Hardy's fiction eschews traditional critical approaches by concentrating on six novels consistently marginalised and undervalued in standard commentaries on his work. Focusing on his female characters, and drawing on aspects of Foucauldian feminist theory, Jane Thomas offers new and detailed readings of Desperate Remedies, A Pair of Blue Eyes, The Hand of Ethelberta, A Laodicean, Two on a Tower and The Well-Beloved which demonstrate that Hardy's insight into the shaping force of the discourses of gender and sexuality on feminine selfhood is fundamental to his entire fictional oeuvre. Thomas also reveals how his poignant concern for the resistant or rebellious female subject at a time of social crisis and change demonstrates the 'engaged' rather than the 'pessimistic' nature of Hardy's vision. ...
