Product Description
ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The autobiography of a lifetime
This book, published in the author's native Spanish two years ago, is a personal and surprisingly sober autobiography of one of the most intriguing and creative renegades of the second half of the 20th Century. From his native Chile to Paris, where he worked for Marcel Marceau, to Mexico and through worlds only an enlightened imagination can contain and create.
A precious introduction to his thought, to his triumphs and his mistakes, to the childhood which broke him and obliged him to make himself into what he became, with a wealth of detail and feeling that help this work stand apart from his myriad creations in the world of bande dessinées, theater and movies.
His production is neverending and varied, turning around the theme of how we must make of this life and its infinitely succeeding instants the expression of our being.
At once rich, confrontational, archetypal in the extreme and vibrantly questioning, with the sort of information we can apply to the understanding of our own beginnings.
We've only got one lifetime to give ourselves a life.
Need I add I recommend it highly?
I read the French translation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars uncensored history comic w/ nudity
Manara is an incredible artist, but if you are looking for some of his sexier work, buy a different book.If you are interested in the violence and crimes of Pope Alexander VI, then this book is a keeper. There is some nudity, but the book is about papal and renaissance politics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dark and Awesome
I fist discovered this graphic novel from the magazine Heavy Metal and I couldn't believe what I was reading, it was so dark and evil! This particular part in the series is filled with deception, murder, incest, orgies, betrayal and so much more.I got that issue of Heavy Metal with this story featured in it so long ago and I still think about how much I love it - which is what brought me to search for it here and go so far as to write a review. The art style may seem a bit 90's at first glance but it fits the mood perfectly and is quite enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forbidden history
Yes, you could call the book with this name. There are topics which are forbidden to speak about in history. Everybody knows the events in our history which are described in official history books 180 degrees different as they were in reality. Only because the winners write the history and it is not allowable to show the winners in any other way as heroes and good ones.
So this two books about Borgias is just one example how it is possible by picture book tell little different story than an orthodox history tells us.
But even without all this it is very good book with fine graphic and little humor.
I would suggest to everybody who admires the Milo Manaras art and to everybody who are interested to have a little history lesson.
Good enjoying!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great
One of manara's greatest works in my mind. Great story line and never gets boring. The second volume delivers the same exciting element. The second volume is in Heavy Metal Magazine for those who would like to know. Cannot wait for the third issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art and History!
Manara is one of a kind. This is the first time for me to enjoy his art with historical references to Catholic Church and Middle Ages. I look forward for the second volume of this tittle. ... Read more

The novel-length "The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy" is jam-packed with lethal sword battles alternating with humor, horror, suspense and slapstick. This beautifully crafted, exciting volume is a great starting point for new readers! One of the great epics in the comic book field stars a rabbit? That's right, Stan Sakai's enormous dramatic saga of death and treachery, of ambition and honor, is the comics equivalent of Akira Kurosawa's classics such as The Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress. This volume of the Usagi series features the novel-length "The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy," which originally ran in six consecutive issues of the Usagi comics series. Jam-packed with lethal sword battles alternating with humor, horror, suspense, and slapstick, this beautifully crafted and exciting volume features all of the most popular supporting characters from the series, including Tomoe Ame, Gen the rhino, and Zato-Ino the blind swordspig. Both an excellent starting point for new readers, and an absolute necessity for Usagi completists! Black-and-white comics throughout ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Rare with hard to find extras only in the H/C Limited Edition
Usagi Yojimbo Book Four "The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy" was the first Hard Cover Limited Edition book published by Fantagraphics Books, in the Usagi series. It was such a success, that Fantagraphics proceeded to publish Books 1-3 in both Hard Cover and Soft Cover editions.Since it was the first in a series, it had some special additions that differentiate it from all of the other Usagi Hard Covers to follow. It contains a water color painted story at the end of the book titled "Return to Adachigahara Plain" which for a long time was unavailable anywhere else. The book was one of the hardest to find and most expensive of the Hard Cover line because of this addition. When the "20th Anniversary Art of Usagi Yojimbo" book came out with a reprinting of the Adachigahara story, recently, prices which had climbed to $400-$500 level fell to a more respectable $200-$300 level, if and when the book ever came on the market.

This was one of the largest print runs of the Usagi Hard Cover series. As Stan Sakai relates in the wonderful Usagi Yojimbo Dojo website, "Editor Kim had estimated that the initial orders would not exceed 500, so I offered to do a full figure drawing on each of the signature plates. The orders came in for 1,500. It took me a full 3 weeks to do those drawings. Nowadays I just draw an Usagi head sketch."

So in addition to the original color print story of Return to Adachigahara Plain, every copy of this limited edition run has an original full figure sketch by Stan Sakai on the signature plate.See the photo's I've posted to appreciate the effort that went into 1,500 completely original sketches for this edition.

Although one might think that this particular edition would be the easiest to find because the 1,500 print run was much higher than the subsequent volumes (usually 300-500 copies) that went hardcover, many speculate it is so difficult to find at times because it was the first Usagi HC ever produced without a softcover edition alongside it (the SC edition came out later with an entirely different cover -- probably adding to the scarcity of for-sale copies of the HC). Other HC editions were produced alongside or after the SC editions, with often little differences, making them less coveted then this HC edition with the fully painted color 8 page addition of the story of Adachigahara and original full figure sketch by the author.

It was revealed in "Return to Adachigahara Plain" who it was that gave Usagi his scar during that final battle. That 8-page story was fully painted in color and until recently had not been reprinted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Deep and Entertaining All the Way Through!
As many people have asserted, Usagi Yojimbo gets deeper and better the further it's read, and the more Stan Sakai has experience in developing the character.
This book out of the Fantagraphics series is the best yet (I'm reading them in order, so I'm sure it'll get better than this), and has the most complex and detailed plot line.Again, I'm no expert in Japanese history, but from what critics have stated before, Sakai is very well versed in the history of samurai, and his integration of the rabbit-bodyguard to create historical fiction is very welcome and adds for the creator's own sense of imagination and humor.

Onward to the next installment!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic story
Another wonderful classic by Stan Sakai!
this is one of Usagi's grandest adventures and a must have for any Ronin fan!
Beautifully drawn and written!

5-0 out of 5 stars Usagi's first major epic
Usagi Yojimbo is the kind of quality work that transcends time, genres, demographics, and even age groups. It crafts a delicate and beautiful balance between honor and savagery, cute innocence and dark brutality, simple heart-warming stories and multi-part epics that shape a dense continuity. Whether or not you've ever been a fan of feudal Japanese culture, furry anthro characters, or independent, non-superhero comics, Usagi Yojimbo is a comic that can't help but impress even the harshest critic.

While "The Wanderer's Road" (volume 3) proved that Stan Sakai was master of the stand-alone adventure, "The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy" (volume 4) raises the stakes a thousand-fold.Here, Usagi takes part in a 7 part epic, tying together much of Sakai's established universe and characters in a complex story of intense battles, political intrigue, interpersonal drama, and great pathos.Miyamato Usagi's world almost literally explodes on the page, proving without a doubt that you haven't seen anything yet.If this volume doesn't leave you panting, reeling, and in tears by its conclusion, then something is terribly wrong.

Of course, this is just another step in the development of the Usagi Yojimbo universe.Bigger and better things are yet to come, but that will almost seem impossible after reading this explosive installment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for the Usagi Fan
While I agree with others' reviews that this is not the best place to start, for someone like me who had previously read other, later Usagi installments, it turned out that this issue filled in some key back stories. If like me, you are already familiar with the characters Jen and Ino, you definitely will want to read Volume 4.

In addition, the intro by Alejandro Jodorowsky provides an unintentional chuckle.Of Usagi, Jodorowsky writes, "Rendered with a grace that verges on the miraculous...".Hey Alejandro, it's just a comic book :-) ... Read more

Product Description
... Read more

Excerpt: David Regenald Lynch (born January 20, 1946) is an American filmmaker and visual artist. Over a lengthy career, Lynch has employed a distinctive and unorthodox approach to narrative filmmaking (dubbed Lynchian), which has become instantly recognizable to many audiences and critics worldwide. Lynch's films are known for nightmarish and dreamlike images and meticulously crafted sound design. Lynch's work often depicts a seedy underside of small town America (particularly Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks), or sprawling California metropolises (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and his latest release, Inland Empire). Beginning with his experimental film school feature Eraserhead (1977), he has maintained a strong cult following despite inconsistent commercial success. Excerpt: Pablo Neruda (July 12, 1904 September 23, 1973) was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean writer and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. With his works translated into many languages, Pablo Neruda is considered one of the greatest and most influential poets of the 20th century. He chose his pen name in honour of the famous Czech poet Jan Neruda. Neruda was accomplished in a variety of styles ranging from erotically charged love poems like his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. During his lifetime, Neruda occupied many diplomatic posts and served a stint as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party. When Conservative Chilean President González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months in a house basement in the Chilean port of Valparaíso. Later, Neruda escaped into exile through a mountain pass near Maihue La...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7673195 ... Excerpt: Alejandro Jodorowsky (Spanish pronunciation: ) (born February 7, 1929) is a Chilean filmmaker, playwright, composer and writer. Born to parents of Ukrainian Jewish heritage, he subsequently embraced the occult and studied comparative religion, being an avid tarot card reader, and formulating a form of psychotherapy known as "psychomagic". Best known around the world for his avant-garde filmmaking, his horror films, most notably El Topo (1970), The Holy Mountain (1973) and Santa Sangre (1989), combine surrealism with elements of the occult and have become cult classics. He is also a prolific writer of comic books, which he has been creating since 1966, and has also written books on the subject of psychomagic and an autobiography. Jodorowsky was born in 1929 in the town of Tocopilla, Chile, to Jaime Jodorowsky, a merchant who was largely abusive to his wife Sara Felicidad, at one time accused her of flirting with a customer. Angered, he subsequently beat and raped her, getting her pregnant, which led to the birth of Alejandro. Subsequently, Sara both hated her husband and disliked her son, telling him that "I cannot love you." Aged nine he was forced to leave his village by his father, whom he hated, and he devoted much of his life to reading to occupy himself. He also got involved in poetry, publishing his first poems aged sixteen, and associating with the Chilean poets...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=262658 ... Read more
