Product Description

Scientists Greater than Einstein tells the stories of ten scientists whose discoveries have had an amazing impact on humanity. Combined, these ten scientists have saved more than 1.6 billion lives—and yet, most remain unknown and unheralded. For instance: Do you know about the eye doctor who in the 1970s figured out how to save millions of children with a nickel’s worth of medicine? How about the man from the dusty fields of Mexico who has saved hundreds of millions of people from dying of starvation and malnutrition? Everyone knows about Jonas Salk and his polio vaccine. Do you know whose discovery made Salk’s vaccine possible and who created the measles vaccine that has saved many more lives than the polio vaccine? Much of the world’s population is alive today due to these ten scientists and no one knows their names. Scientists Greater than Einstein will correct this oversight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book filled with revolutionary changes to humankind.
This book held my interest from beginning to end.I enjoy the mystery-solving feel of epidemiology. These men made massive affects on human life, but most were quiet, hard-working, modest people.I had no idea the number of lives changed particularly by blood typing.I simply never considered it.This book is highly recommended for those in health care and layman alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal anecdotes blend with scientific facts in a coverage perfect for both college-level and general-interest libraries
SCIENTISTS GREATER THAN EINSTEIN: THE BIGGEST LIFESAVERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY offers a survey of ten scientists who changed the world, defeating death for over a billion people, yet remaining obscure in the public eye. This survey offers insights into the works of an eye doctor who discovered a better use for vitamin A, one who eradicated smallpox, treated diarrhea, and more. Personal anecdotes blend with scientific facts in a coverage perfect for both college-level and general-interest libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Greater than Many
Today we are amazingly healthy.Indeed, we have become so healthy that we rarely stop to think about how healthy we are. Most of us live most of our lives without ever having to battle a life-threatening disease. We no longer have to spend weeks or months in bed, recuperating from common illnesses.Nor do we spend our days worrying about starvation, thirst, or other such horrors.Yet all of this is true only by the accident of our birth.Had we been born a few generations earlier, our lives would probably have been much shorter and more painful, if we managed to survive past infancy.

What makes this particularly amazing is that most of us barely know what changed to make our current state of good health possible. The scientific advances that brought medicine out of the dark ages are highly obscure, as are the actual scientists behind them.As Billy Woodward points out, medicine was mostly junk science until about 1870, when Louis Pasteur proved that germs cause most diseases.

"Scientists Greater than Einstein" attempts to plug this gap in modern knowledge by telling the life story of ten heroic scientists, and most likely you've never heard of any of them.Do you know Akira Endo, the Japanese researcher whose statin drugs have saved millions from heart attack? How about Norman Borlag, who cross-breeding experiments in Mexico revolutionized agriculture? These and eight others finally get their due in "Scientists Greater than Einstein".

Truth be told, the writing in this book is not all that good, but the material is so compelling that it sweeps you right along.Woodward does a good job of mixing together the personal stories of his ten heroic researchers and the explanations of their scientific discoveries. The characters come to life as we read about their personal struggles mixed together with their various explorations. Some stories, such as the campaign to eliminate smallpox from Nigeria, read like adventure stories, complete with a narrow escape and a villainous military dictator.Others seem hauntingly sad, like the tale of Frederick Banting, the penniless Canadian doctor who found the treatment for diabetes. All of them broaden our understand about the contributions of science, and the hard work of people who struggled throughout their lives to help others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientists Greater than Einstein, Life Saving Science by Very Human Scientists
Scientists Greater than Einstein, The Biggest Lifesavers of the Twentieth Century

This is a book about the coming of age for modern medical science. The stories of the scientists behind these life-saving discoveries are the real gem of the book. They are called, "Scientists Greater than Einstein". It was the force of their personalities that led to these life-saving discoveries of the twentieth century. The "Green Revolution" that has fed much of the world, would never have happened save for the sheer force of will exerted by the Nobel prize winning agricultural scientist, Norman Borlaug. (Chapter Five: Norman Borlaug- Over 245 Million Lives Saved.)This is a book that reminds us everybody is human; we just have to let it out.It is a book about the human personality of science. Each story is written so that the reader sees inside the mind of the scientist. Each scientist thereby becomes real and personal. Their science is developed through the scientist's perspective. The reader experiences the struggles, the doubts, the "ah-ha" moments, the failures, and the achievements, in essence- the humanness of science. The scientist, Frederick Banting, writes about his diabetic laboratory Collie that died after he gave the Collie the isletin he developed, "I have seen patients die and I have never shed a tear. But when that dog died I wanted to be alone, for the tears would fall despite anything I could do." (Chapter Nine: Frederick Banting- Over 16 Million Lives Saved.) The evocative headings guide you through each stage of the scientist's life. Some of the living scientists are interviewed, so the reader feels the introspection and reflection about his life and his science. Having seen the devastation of World War I and watching the rise of Hitler, Karl Landsteiner was not an optimist, so his reserved personality brought to him the monikers of the "investigator with the mournful eyes" and the "melancholy genius." (Chapter Ten: Karl Landsteiner- Over 1 Billion and 38 Million Lives Saved.) The pictures and quotes at the end of each chapter complete the scientist's spectrum. - Lloyd Charles Wilson
"What is it that is better than science? Better than science is science with heart, science with ethics, science with equity, science with justice." - Bill Foege. (Chapter Three: Bill Foege- Over 122 Million Lives Saved.)

1-0 out of 5 stars dont buy it.
its got some great songs in it but dont let that fool you. you have to pull out the verses for most of the songs. it only tells you how to play the bridge intro and outro mostly. if you dont play by ear, this book is not for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for developing style
This is a great book that I've been waiting a while for. I have always wanted to know how to play the bluesy piano part from one of the last verses of The Entertainer among other piano parts, and this book shows you how.

The book also does a good job of analyzing Joel's music so that it makes more sense and is easier to play. For example, it cites a typical bass line that Joel likes to use to add to basic progressions. It also helps give perspective on the types of grooves in the songs (early rock, latin, etc.).

The CD is also helpful. It was a good idea to play the parts with a full band without the vocals so you can hear them better. It also helps when some of the more difficult sections are slowed down and played by just the piano.

The only downsides to the book are that a lot of these transcriptions are available in The Billy Joel Keyboard Book and that I wish the entire songs were in here instead of just selected verses and choruses of songs. I would definitely recommend getting this book. The entire Keyboard Signature Licks series is a very good learning resource for people trying to figure out how to play authentic rock and pop piano. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book
I have been a fan of Ronnie Spector since the 60's and have heard alot about her relationship with Phil but it was great to hear it in her own words.I am a bigger fan now. Thanks for the memories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book - about life as a Ronette and marraige to Phil Spector!
Lead singer for the Ronettes, one of the better so-called "girl groups" of the 1960s, Spector provides an insider's look at the madness and glamour of an explosive period in rock music. Much of the book revolves around her relationship with Phil Spector, the star-making producer whose "Wall of Sound" concept revolutionized recording studio technique. According to the singer, her husband was obsessed with control, keeping her a virtual prisoner in his mansion for nearly five years before she broke free to reestablish a life and career of her own. Now remarried with two children, and having met with success in her struggle against alcoholism, the singer, aided by freelance writer Waldron, reminisces with apparent objectivity. Her candor, amid the recent rash of tell-all books by aging rock stars, is refreshing and puts Be My Baby a cut above the standard self-serving, bonkers-and-back autobiography. ... Read more
