5-0 out of 5 stars Great music arrangements
I'm so glad I found this book on Amazon. I had it years ago, when I was a kid, and I lost it through a series of relocations, but I have it once again! Very good transcriptions, immensely fun to play. I especially love the "Funeral For A Friend" arrangement. I highly recommend it to beginners and advanced! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Trivia
This book turned out much better than I expected. There's all kind of rumors you've heard about rock history that are addressed here. Some are true, some are not and some are half true. I actually started reading this and didn't put it down until I was finished. That's very unusual for me. One example of the types of rumors discussed is as to whether the couple who make up the White Stripes are brother and sister of husband and wife. Doe's lead Zeppelin's song Ramble On refer to characters from the lord of the rings and can you hear the screams of a woman being murdered in the studio on the song Roller Coaster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Read
My sister got this for me, because I love to read and love pop culture. I loved this book and finished it in one sitting. I learned stuff about the music industry I didn't know, and I know a lot. Fun Read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun read
I got this for my sister who loves to read and love pop culture. She really loved the book and finished it in one sitting. She said she found out a lot about the music industry she didn't know and she knows a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Entertaining
Great trivia, wonderful to amuse guests at a party with your bizarre musical knowledge and the real scoop on some musical "urban legends".
A fun and easy read!

Product Description
This biography of Elton John, the man who single-handedly accounts for some ten per cent of international music sales, is a mixture of personal experience, rock history and social comment that traces his life between the late 1970s and the 1990s. The book tells the turbulent tale of high times on the rock-star circuit, and the extravagant and extraordinary event of his own life: the drugs, the guys and the entourage, the battles and the bravado, as well as his sudden and traumatic marriage with Renate Blauel, a German tape operator. It also reveals the softer side of Elton, the strong relationship he has with his mother and especially his triumph over drug excesses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Caution - candid
This book is not for anyone, even passionate Elton fans, who have the slightest problem with Elton's sexual orientation. This very candid book was written by an on-again, off-again friend and lover whose feelings for Elton were strong enough to withstand the ups and downs that Elton's torrid lifestyle brought with it.It is an account of excesses and tormented minds, but also of happier times and deep emotions. It is, of course, written by someone who was ultimately rejected, and you must realize that you will see everything through the author's eyes and pain.Underneath it all, you will also see the pain and suffering that Elton went through to beat addiction and end up sober.Nothing you read will take away from his musical genius, his compassion for the victims of AIDS, and his generosity towards friends and the cause of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Short But Sweet Look At The Life Of The 70's Pop Star
This book gives you a small glimpse of Elton John's career up to 1976. It is not a really long book, but it holds your interest. The complicated upbringing of Elton when he was known by his birth name Reginald Dwight. And how he struggled to be seen and heard by his stern father and schoolmates. How music became his salvation through this trying period, and his mother's encouragement to stick with pop music which Elton loved and felt he could best express himself, despite the objections of his father who demanded that he stick with the classics. Elton's tenure in the band Bluesology and how he took the names of two of it's leaders Elton Dean and Long John Baldry and made them his own. He even gave himself a new middle name: Hercules. His determination to write and perform his own songs, and how he found a kindred spirit in Lyricist Bernie Taupin. His debut at the club trubadour in Los Angeles in 1970, and his subsequent success with his self titled debut album, and all the success that followed after. I think that Elton would be happy that he followed his dream of music superstardom instead of following in his father's footsteps. Because of that, you're bound not to see a sign bearing the name Reginald Dwight and Co., which is what probably would have happened to him had he listened to his dad. We're the lucky ones because it didn't happen that way, and we would have missed out on a lot of great music if it had. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hodge-Podge of Elton Bio
I bought this book for my 12 yr old sister, an extreme Elton fan. She proceeded to recite facts during dinner and make Elton references for the next few months. This was a well put-together book and informative. While you can get some of the info in other places, nothing is organized so well with so much information all in one spot. Any Elton fan would not be disappointed!

1-0 out of 5 stars It says there was an editor, but....
I gave it a star for the info (though no original info that you can't find in any other Elton bio) and the great pictures. However, as an editor, I found it very difficult to read this book (and did so only by wincing repeatedly on each page).I even looked, after only a few pages into the book, in the back to see if an editor was listed.Unfortunately, there is.I hope she is no longer editing professionally as she clearly does not have the skills to do so.I could list many examples, but I will spare you.If you read this book, you can see them for yourself. Most high school and college students could edit better than she.Ms. Cassata, I suggest you get a new editor for your next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Great Work
Another great piece by author Mary Anne Cassata. I have been reading her Elton and Bernie Taupin stories for two decades in national music magazines, and she is considered a reliable source for her hard-to-get information. I especially enjoyed the rare photographs and interview material, as well as the lengthy chapter on Bernie. As an Elton fan, I delighted in this scrapbook and I flip through it often. It's a fun, easy read and it's informative as well. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING TRIBUE TO ELTON JOHN AND HIS FANS
I recently bought the Elton John Scrapbook by Mary Anne Cassata. I have been a loyal fan since the early Seventies and this book is everything a fan could ever want in one BIG scrapbook setting; loads of color pics (many rare), fascinating bits of information, extensive album reviews, memorabilia, trivia, concert highlights and even an extensive chapter on Bernie Taupin. The Elton John Scrapbook isabsolutely adelightful and a respectable tribute to Elton and his fans (SEE the East End Lights, Fan Survey and Collecting Elton Johnchapters). Finally, an Elton John book that is not another rehash biography, but a celebration of the man, his music, his life and his fans. Bravo Miss Cassata!

2-0 out of 5 stars The Elton John (S)crapbook!!!!
No, the title's not a spelling error. The two star rating was for the pictures, which were impressive, not the book! This book had the potential to be a great source of information for all Elton Fans, but just turned out to be a feast of second-hand facts, gathered from 'various sources'. There is not one piece of original information in here. eg. In a section called 'Fascinating facts' there is this; 'Elton filmed 2 television commercials for diet coke'.Now, people who buy books about Elton John want to know about him and his music, not things like that.

The worst things by far though are the careless errors. This book cannot have been proof read. Here is an excerpt from the 'Just the Sats and Facts section';

Sports; tennis and soccer. In 1971 Elton was the vice-president of the Watford Hornets. [Not the 'Watford Hornets'. The team is Watford. Its nickname is 'The Hornets'.]From 1976 to 1990 he owned the team and his cousin Roy Dwight was a national star.[Brace yourself, because I am not making this up. This is exactly how the book was written. Here goes...] In 1971 Elton became the vice-president of the Watford Hornets [!]. He owned the team from 1976-1990...

Now, maybe Mary-Anne Cassata finds this information exciting but is it really necessary to write it twice within the same paragraph? The punctuation is also terrible.

However many errors there are, though, the author deserves credit for the amount of effort that went in to this work. She obviously worked hard collecting information and pictures.

So, everybody out there thinking of buying this book, here are a few words of advice; STICK TO PHILIP NORMAN!!!! ... Read more
