Product Description

"I like to collect knives," says Angelina Jolie, "but I also collect first edition books." At first glance, she might seem to be someone without any secrets, talking openly about her love life, sexual preferences, drug use, cutting, and tattoos--and why she kissed her brother on the lips in public. And yet mysteries remain: What was really going on in her brief, impulsive marriages to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, and what is going on in her partnership with Brad Pitt? What’s behind the oft-reported feud with her father, the Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight?  What drove her to become a mother of six children in six years? And—perhaps most puzzling of all—what about the other side of Angelina: How did this talented but troubled young actress, barely 35 years old, become a respected Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations as well as the "most powerful celebrity in the world" (unseating Oprah Winfrey) on Forbes’ 2009 Celebrity 100 list?

The answers that Andrew Morton has uncovered are astonishing, taking us deep inside Angelina’s world to show us what shaped her as a child, as an actress, and as a woman struggling to overcome personal demons that have never before been revealed. In this spellbinding biography, Andrew Morton draws upon far-reaching original interviews and research, accompanied by exclusive private photographs, to show us the true story behind both the wild excesses of Angelina’s youth and her remarkable work with children and victims of poverty and disaster today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, penetrating biography
(Audiobook review) This is actually a more in-depth biography than some reviewers would have you believe. Morton delves deeply into Jolie's family history, detailing the lives of both her father Jon Voight and mother Marcheline Bertrand (both fascinating individuals) before actually getting to Jolie. Morton details Jolie's childhood, her long-term estrangement from her father, her fascination with knives, tattoos and exhibitionism, drug use, numerous affairs (Timothy Hutton, Mick Jagger, Ralph Fiennes) and relationships with Jonny Lee Miller, Billy Bob Thornton and Brad Pitt, and her increasing obsession with adopting babies and philanthropy. Morton quotes psychiatrists throughout, who offer insights into her behavior. Bronson Pinchot's narration is evenly paced and a tad bland but the material doesn't leave you bored.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's ok but Morton is a 3rd rate journalist
The first thing I found ridiculous is that there is a biography of Angelina taken verbatim from her bio on [...]Then how many times can Andrew Morton use "peripatetic" in a sentence?I mean it's a cool word and the biographer of Beatrix Potter Linda Lear, LOVED the work too, among others, but come on, 4-5 times in the book is overkill.

I also thought some of the material was weak. But all in all "ok".

5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting read...
It starts off slow. I had a hard time getting into it with all the back story but after the first chapter it really became more interesting. DEfinately gives you some insight on why Angelina behaves as she does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Intersting and Seemingly Well Researched
Reading Andrew Morton's ANGELINA surprised me and made me much more empathetic to Angelina Jolie, an actress whose actions and antics have always struck me as pleas for attention by an exhibitionist, shock-oriented actress.

After finishing it this afternoon and feeling sincere sympathy for a vulnerable woman who had an extraordinarily unconventional and alienating upbringing, I turned to Amazon hoping to learn what other readers thought of Morton's interpretation of her life, challenges and successes.

I cannot imagine why any Jolie fan would attack the writer or the reviewers here who see value in Morton's exploration of her life.Far from attacking Angelina Jolie, this unauthorized biography carves out a plausible explanation for all of Angelina Jolie's most confusing behaviors, from making out with her brother in front of the world's cameras and engaging in a never ending series of home wrecker relationships to compulsive adopting and publicly over-sharing about the personalities and clothing preferences of her innocent young children.

While I cannot attest to the truth behind Morton's seemingly extensive research, I can say that Jolie's unauthorized biographer creates a very sympathetic portrait of a complicated, often misunderstood actress.

The biggest drawback in ANGELINA is that Morton writes too much about Angelina Jolie's gemini personality.Even if I did believe in astrology, I would still think Morton goes to far in trying to play up a gemini's twin perspectives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice summer read
I've been pretty ambivalent towards Angelina Jolie over the years, but I have admired her charity work and using her celebrity to put a spotlight on worldwide issues. I wasn't too familiar with Andrew Morton before a few weeks ago, but apparently the British writer is infamous for highly publicized, dishy tell-alls on Princess Diana, The Royal Family, and Tom Cruise.

Setting his sights on Angelina Jolie, does Mr. Morton reveal anything new or shocking about the actress? Not really. I already knew about her wild child past filled with kinky sex and drug use. As well as her truly bizarre marriage to Billy Bob Thornton (a real weirdo in his own right) and the adoption of little Maddox that saved her life and began her well documented humanitarian work. Angie's shared all of this and then some with no hesitation.

One thing I hadn't heard before was the deep depression Jolie fell into after filming the biopic Gia, the famous supermodel whose self-destructive ways led to her 1986 death from AIDS. Angie found many similarites between herself and the woman she was playing, but thankfully she was able to pull herself out of the darkness before it was too late.

Two things that bugged me were the long winded descriptions of Angelina's family tree and the not so subtle biased view of her mother Marcheline. I understand why Morton had to flesh out the alleged dynamic in the Bertrand family (mother Lois was a pushy stage mom while father Rolland was a meek man who let his wife run the show), but he goes on and on about it. Keep it brief in the future.

According to Andrew's sources (former friends of the family), Marcheline took after her mom. If someone offended or stood up to her she'd set in the "Bertrand freeze" and pretend as if that person didn't exist. She supposedly set it to full blast after ex-husband Jon Voight's infidelity and relegated baby Angie to the top floor of their apartment with a nanny (also an alleged family friend interviewed for the book) to care for the infant for nearly a year. It's no secret that most of the sources paint Marche as a bitter, heartless witch who brainwashed the kids to hate their father. Jon is described as a father who was truly remorseful for his betrayal, but unfairly spurned and heavily criticized by his children at every turn.

Could that be the truth? Maybe, but I wouldn't call it a cold hard fact. That goes for alot of the stories I read in the book. I wouldn't be quick to say they're all true or all false. I just looked at it as a nice summer read. No more, no less. ... Read more

This book is in pretty good shape considering it's not new; however, I don't appreciate seller's dishonesty.

4-0 out of 5 stars A story that everyone should read....
If I had to sum this book up in one word, it would be perspective. After reading this book.I realize just how very lucky I am.If your in a place where you feel like your life is kicking you around, read this. There are so many people in the world that are suffering horribly and still manage to smile through it all.It was a real wake up call.I am going to give my thanks every day for what I have. This book was very moving and at times brought tears to my eyes.I have the utmost respect for Angelina and all she has done to help the refugees of the world. We can all learn from her example. All the people that continually trash her should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read
This is a wondeful book from a wonderful pearson, you can tell how truely passinote she is about what she dose. This book is very eyeopening to many heart breaking and devistating things so many people go through but so few people know about. I believe if we were more informed and more people understood that more people would care and take action to end these horrific events and save millions of people from this kind of devistaion, and heal the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Putting celebrity to good use
I enjoyed this book very much, although it tensed me at times, and made me cry at others. It's the story of many refugees around the world, and the humanitarian work Angelina Jolie has done to help them out. It's an account of her early years as Good Will Ambassador for the UNHCR.

It's the story of many refugees around the world, and the humanitarian work Angelina Jolie has done to help them out. It's an account of her early years as Good Will Ambassador for the UNHCR.

I'm so impressed by the things that people can do to each other, and how the survivors of this hatred and spite keep on with their lives after such harsh and traumatic experiences stay tattooed on their souls. By the end of the book I couldn't stop asking myself the same thing that Angelina asked herself all along: how do they survive at all!

Angelina starts her journal by saying that she's not different from other people, but she wants to help. To me that alone makes her different. Not everyone cares about other fellow beings. She's different in so many ways and she makes a difference with all her humanitarian work.

I can understand why the UNHCR agency has such high rates of suicide and depression. Reading books about other countries who live in permanent terror like the ones she describes always depresses me, even though I'm thousands of miles away culturally and physically, and safe behind the soft pages of the book. I can't imagine the emotional scars that all those persons are left with when they are lucky enough to keep their lives. Anonymous to the rest of the world and yet still very valuable lives. Dead just seems such a high price to pay for respect and integrity. I can't imagine where they gather the strength to keep smiling.

It would be easier, less risky and less emotionally demanding to just send funds from the comfort of her home, and yet she is willing to share with all these people her time helping out in whatever ways she can. And that's why it's so admirable what she does. It's easy to mourn the dead, but it's hard to help the living. To all those refugees she is just some woman who wants to help. A remarkable woman with noble feelings. She masters beautiful gestures that make people feel good and loved and recognized and valued, and that alone can be more important than having a lot of other things that seem necessary and are necessary for all of them, but not any more so than the grace and beauty of a person whose mere existence makes it possible for them to keep their hopes up.

As I read once, you can train thousands or millions of political theorists and economists and theologians and bureaucrats, but charm and charisma, and the desire to put celebrity to good use: hundreds of years of training can't teach that or invent it. And Angelina has what it takes to make all this happen. I can't help those people because I don't have the economic resources to do so. But I'm grateful that there are people like her out there who are willing to share what they have, and to sacrifice some of her own comfort to help out. It's a good read if you want to sensitize yourself about some world issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an Inspiration!

What talent Angelina Jolie has!Not only a terrific actress but has lived her very young life with meaning and compassion while helping people in third world countries, and all with no publicity about her good deeds. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars News clips put together.
This book was nothing but news clips put together. Obviously, Jolie would not give an interview. So the writer relied on the easy way out: basic research on what's been written before in newspapers, tabloids etc.

I liked this because it enlightened me to her past and how she is different from everyone else. Right from the beginning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, the truth !!!!
This book really tells it like it is, finally !!!This is a most troubled screwed up woman, who has a great publicist that she pays big time.Example:When the publicity came out about her incentuous relationship with her brother, her publicist has her marry Billy Bob Thorton to take the attention off the the relationship with her brother. It worked. Then she dumps Thorton (who wasn't worth keeping anyway and she never really loved). And oh my, what a wonderful "earth mother".She is so loudly praised for her being an ambassador or whatever the hell she does in other lands and trust me, she has an agenda for herself in doing that. This woman cares about no one but herself. She is totally narcissistic (Yes, look it up in the dictionary if you know not what it means).I'm sure I will get a lot of flack from this review but as far as I'm concerned, this book tells it right.Even Morton's new book is not as revealing as this one.I loved reading this book. For the first time, someone really tells the truth and behold, Angelina is just another totally f***ed up woman, who albeit is physically beautiful and at most points can act, who in the end, will end up dying alone, wondering what happened.Poor thing . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Brangelina--Halperin
I really enjoyed this book.I have read reviews that knock Halperin for adding personal comments or maybe that he talked more about himself than Pitt and Jolie. However, I thought Halperin's additional personal comments only added to the understanding of each situation he injected them into.I thought the book flowed and was an easy read.My only regret was he talked so little about Pitt.Mind you Jolie is VERY entertaining on many levels, but I would have enjoyed reading about Pitt's childhood and rise to success more than Halperin did...even if his childhood was "like the Clevers".

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Angie, not enough Brad and Brangelina
I think the author mistitled this book.It should have been an unauthorized story of Angelina Jolie. There are very few chapters that Pitt is even mentioned in.I also didn't think some of the author's so-called undercover work should have been included. Why go undercover in a mental hospital years after Angie stayed there for a couple of days?It didn't add anything to the book at all.His undercover work regarding "sibs" was also unneccesary, adding nothing, and was disgusting to boot.Overall, I found the book to be just a re-hash of everything we have already heard about Angie and certainly not anything new or "untold" as he claims in the title.

1-0 out of 5 stars The art of manipulation.
This book is about Angelina. It's all insinuation and rumors without anything substantial. If she is as great of a manipulator of her image and the public as the author says she is -- the author has learned from the best. He has written a lengthy gossip piece without offering anything factual. He shows himself standing in front of the psychiatric unit where she was committed and he allegedly infiltrated to get the goods on her-- yet he admits he didn't actually find out anything. He NEVER finds out anything. He relates third party stories and hearsay by people who often never even met her. The book doesn't even have many pictures. A very shallow biography indeed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good photos
If you are a fan of Angelina, this book will not tell you anything you do not already know. Very poorly written, the author obviously threw this book together in a quick attempt to cash in on the AJ craze. However, I did enjoy the photos, they make a nice addition to your collection. If you'd like to get to know AJ a little better, try the book Angelina Jolie's Journals: Notes From My Travels, written by Angelina herself. She takes you behind the scenes for a personal look at her work as an ambassador.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I liked this book, it contained great pictures and a lot of information.I don't give it 5 stars because I don't think the author really checked if the facts was true, because some things wasn't. And it was too much facts about other people in it.
If you really are a fan you should buy it, you will love the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
okay the book was very well written and the facts and every thing was awesome but I wish it would of told more about Angelina's feelings and thoughts. There is a lot of pictures in the book and they are very nice.I love Angelina Jolie and the book gives you a lot of trival things about her.I loved the pictures of her in high school that was cool. The only two things that werent good was it didn't show her feelings and thougths and of course it is not up to date.It says nothing about Her and Billy Bob spliting and abopting Maddox but it is a little older for that.Good book

I wish I had read marcia's review... this book has a gorgeous cover but inside is just a compilation of magazine articles and speculation. i would have given the book one star- but threw in the extra one for the highschool pics of angelina and this color pic that makes her look like a housewife. However if I were you- i wouldn't waste your money on this book for the pictures because there's not many. then again- we all have to learn from our own mistakes right?
