4-0 out of 5 stars King James bible on disc
I've listened to the first CD (Matthew 1-13)and find it most helpful with my bible study.Since I've not listened to all CD's yet I can only comment on the first one.The sound is acceptable. It's not scratched; occasionally the volume rises and then falls, but it doesn't disturb my ability to understand James Earl Jones. The case in which the CD's are packaged came to me partially broken.I won't know until a future date if any of the CD's are scratched due to the damaged package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased
Very pleased with it. I didn't at first realize it was just the New Testament. Only a few errors as i discovered by following along in my Bible with it but nothing doctrinely terrible :-p. Highly recommend for all christians to own a copy of an audio Bible. It puts things in a new light for those who are learning it and applying to their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to get religion.
I have to be honest - James Earl Jones has read more Bible to me than I ever read on my own.And you can listen to the Bible while you're multi-tasking.James Earl Jones has a fantastic voice and there are no extraneous choirs or music in the background. The only negative I can add has already been pointed out by other reviewers. This collection covers the New Testament only.I was kind of hoping to get the Old Testament too but, based on what's out there now, I can wait until James Earls Jones reads the Old Testament

3-0 out of 5 stars New Testament by James Earl Jones
What a marvelous narrator!I wish I would have read the other reviews prior to purchase as I too was under the impression that this was the entire Bible, not just the NEW TESTAMENT.I would highly consider letting buyers know that even though it says Deluxe, it is referring to the lovely box it comes in.This is very deceptive. Now I have to spend another $41 to get the entire Bible. Please correct this if you value your feedback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This is an excellent reading of the King James Version New Testament. Jones reads clearly with excellent pronunciation and makes it easier to listen to and understand. His voice is wonderful to listen to. There is no music played in the background, which is good.

The hymns by the Nashville Faith Choir are enjoyable. They sing several of them with a traditional shape-note tone quality. For some this is an acquired taste. But I love shape-note singing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the Bible, just the New Testament
When I search for "The Bible" on CD, and I find on title "THE BIBLE", I expect it to be the WHOLE Bible. Not just one part of it."James Earl Jones Reads the Bible"It should say he reads the New Testament.Other than that, it is great.TRUTH in ADVERTISING!!Especially when it is the BIBLE!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Product arrived on time and in new condition. No concerns with this order. The product itself is great, just spoken in old english which can be difficult to understand at times.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mislabled, misleading
This is a very soothing and pretty much precise reading.I do find the labeling to be misleading due to the title "The Bible"I did not read the small print (I have eye problems) and thought it was the complete Bible not just the New Testament. I think this should be in larger print. All in all I truly like it.Now I have to buy the Old Testament if there is one or spend additional monies on the Complete Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bible On CD
What a coincidence.I've been listening to The Old Testament a lot today, and one CD had
a lot of scratches on it and it was difficult to hear.I had to advance the
better part of 5 tracks. This has been an absolutely wonderful way to "read"
the scriptures.I'm not the world's best, but I'm a pretty good multi-tasker
and to be canning tomatoes, baking cookies, and listening to the Bible has
been a very good experience.I'm getting more out of them by listening than
by reading.I really like the speed of the first reader. He really clicks
along.I'm also looking forward to hearing James Earl Jones who reads the
New Testament.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the audio bible
I really enjoy listening to God's word while driving. I keep the case in my car and turn it on everytime i'm in the car. Since i've been listening to the WORD in my car, i am a whole lot less stressed while driving and has noticed that peace carry over into the work place. Nothing but GOD!

Product Description
The enduring popularity and success of Shakespeare is an international and cross-cultural phenomenon. The aim of the "Actors on Shakespeare" series is to provide an accessible, contemporary commentary to each of the plays via the top-class actors who have performed them. In 1964, at the age of 33, James Earl Jones won an Obie award for his portrayal of Othello in Joseph Papp's production in Central Park, New York. Over the next 25 years he went on to play the Moor a further six times with his 1982 performance being described as "definitive, masterly, magnificent". He brings his vast wealth of experience to this text, articulates the themes and issues in the play and looks at the personal and universal significance of the drama. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Power of self-esteem
I've owned this book for some time and finally picked it up and read it. I have always admired Mr. Jones' voice and acting skills. Here is an African-American that radiates culture, dignity, and has no time for "racism or racialism." He talks about the value of family, healing abandonment, the loss of his voice for most all of his teen years, and his discovery of the theatre. Woven through all of this is a portrait of a man of integrity, who knows what he believes and is willing to Stand on that. We need more of these men these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars A WORTHY SHOW BIZ BIO

The voice is unmistakable - deep, resonant, compelling, and so are the words of James Earl Jones in the reflective memoir he has penned with Penelope Niven One of the most accomplished actors of our day, he has written an autobiography that is as intriguing as his performances.

Jones's 60 year history begins in rural Mississippi, moves to a farm in Michigan, continues as he struggles to find a place on the stage, and culminates in the theaters of the world.

He tells the story of his life on the professional level, including insights into his marvelous performances in "The Great White Hope," "Othello," and "Fences."He also relates his experiences on a personal level offering comments on his origins in a family of sharecroppers, a mother who abandoned him, his marriages, and his multiracial heritage.

This is also a book about voices. There are the stories he heard his grandparents tell, the sounds of life on hardscrabble land in the south. And, most surprisingly, the voice that enthralls audiences today once stuttered and then fell silent for eight years.Jones was mute from the age of six to 14.Of this experience, he wrote, "Because of my muteness, I approached language in a different way from most actors.I came to language standing on my head, turning words inside out in search of meaning, making a mess of it sometimes, but seeing truth from a very different viewpoint. In those years I spent in virtual silence, I grew a passion for expression."

Express himself he does.Whether written or spoken, the words of James Earl Jones add to the richness of our lives and language.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful person; a great actor
This book gives wonderful background of the man who appears in many of the greatest movies and shows ever created. It shows how he overcame personal issues to succeed in his profession.I believe that this book is a goodread for anyone wanting to see perserverance in action.Jones shows thatanyone can do anything if they want it bad enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book that helped heal my wounds
Not only do I know James Earl Jones as an actor(rather than darth vader) I respect him as a very unique individual, who touched some parts in my life. I was having difficulty in school: I stammered in school and was very shy. There were things in my life that I held back for a long time. Like James. I hope that his name will carry on both on stage and off. I definitely recommend this book to those who want to know the person and get to understand him that way. I know I do!

5-0 out of 5 stars I never expected to have so much in common with a black man.
Mr. Jones and I are both part Irish, have a childhood history of stammering, went into acting which helped the speech problem and we may have other things in common. I very much enjoyed this book and I recommend it to others. Why only a "9"? In the middle of the book he states that he is a member of the NRA and just drops the subject. He must know full well that it doesn't jive with his life or his beliefs. But he just dropped it. A great idea for a second book: pick up this subject in the wake of the Murrah building blast and then look at the comparisons between the OJ trial and one of his signature roles, Othello ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I purchased it for my father, but we didn't use it that much yet the quality of the DVDs seemed fine.

Charlton Heston made a Bible DVD set too, and I'm thinking that might be more exciting then this one.Of what I heard of the DVD it did seem well, kind of dull.Yet I believe that the Bible, read properly, can be very exciting.I give these DVDs a rating of "alright."

4-0 out of 5 stars driving with the bible
This is a quality product. The only con is that they play backround music while reading Sciptures. That is distracting as both the Word and the music are good.

5-0 out of 5 stars James Earl Jones Voice is Key
This is an excellent way to listen to scripture especially while driving. Fast delivery. Thanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars James Earl Jones should stick with Darth Vader.
I was excited to get this CD set, since I know James Earl Jones has a great set of pipes, and I have listened so much to Alexander Scourby's reading of the Bible that I was ready for a new reading.I was disappointed the first time I listened.Jones does not use inflection while he reads; the result is that the words sound lifeless. As a Christian believer, that abhors me.

But more than his lifeless reading, I am apalled at Jones' changing of the text.He is reading the King James Version, but he changes the words at will. For example, the text will read "Christ Jesus" and Jones will read "Jesus Christ."I counted 21 errors in his reading of the Book of Ephesians alone. If you believe, as I do, in the divine inspiration of the Word of God, you will not be able to stand how Jones imposes his own changes to the text without any textual or scriptural justification.Jones should stick with Darth Vader. ... Product Description
Perhaps no other figure in recent history has had the wide-reaching impact of the man many know simply as The Greatest. For four decades Muhammad Ali has been a symbol of honesty and strength in sports, politics, religion, and civil rights. Throughout his remarkable career, Ali was one who truly had to be seen to be believed. But while Ali's achievements have frequently been chronicled in prose, never before has his extraordinary career been documented in images. Muhammad Ali: Ringside is dedicated to one of the most popular athlete-entertainers of all time. Included are vintage posters and programs, fight tickets, handwritten letters, classic photographs, speeches, scorecards, contracts, and rare autographs, all from Ali's personal memorabilia. Divided chronologically into four sections, one for each decade from the 1960s to the 1990s, the book includes written narrative recountings of Ali's accomplishments by noted writers and entertaining quotes from Ali's contemporaries.Amazon.com Review
How do you capture an icon? If the icon is The Greatest, someknockout prose, knockout photography, and a knockout presentationcertainly helps. Ali gets all of that in Ringside, a beautifulcelebration of a remarkable talent. But it's something else that givesthe book its distinct flavor: short, sharp testimonies woventhroughout the book that come from the folks who knew Ali, fought him,and observed him. The book's centerpieces--long selections from Alex Haley,NormanMailer, JoyceCarol Oates, and PeterRichmond--attest to the enormous shadow Ali cast. It's the smallerreflections, though, that capture his controversial greatness. WitnessFloyd Patterson, the former champ Ali twice humiliated in the ring: "Icame to love Ali. I came to see that I was a fighter and he washistory." Witness basketball legend Bill Russell: "I still envyhim. He has something I have never been able to attain and very fewpeople I know possess. He has an absolute and sincere faith." WitnessJoe Frazier, second-billed in three enormous ring dramas: "I hateAli.... Twenty years I've been fighting Ali, and I still want to takehim apart and send him back to Jesus." Witness writer PeteHamill: "His fights resembled some bloody offshoot of ballet."

Ali has always inspired the wordsmiths, and he's always inspired thepeople, and you can taste that inspiration on every pagehere. Artfully assembled and generously illustrated with photos ofAli, Ali memorabilia, and Ali artifacts--fight posters, tickets, eventhe media betting pool for the famed "Rumble in the Jungle" and theX-ray of his jaw after Ken Norton broke it--Ringside is aptlynamed. It's a front-row seat to an amazing story. --JeffSilverman ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag
I would consider this a coffeetable book more than anything. The boxing photography in this is great. The writing is a mixed bag. Its mainly overblown hero worship of Ali from various celebrities and liberal media establishment journalists/writers. The two things I found interesting was an excerpt from an interview with Ali shortly after the first Liston fight where he step by step, round by round goes through what he did and what was going through his head during his first encounter with Liston. Surprisingly (because I normally don't like Mailer) I also thought Norman Mailers descriptive round by round recount of the Ali-Foreman fight was good. Besides those two excerpts and the photography this books not worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back in print: Good!
This briefly went out of print, but thankfully it's back. It's a fantastic book on a popular topic. Anyone who is a fan at all of Ali's career or just of boxing in general should read this. The articles by the likes of Norman Mailer, Alex Haley, and Joyce Carol Oates are priceless, and the photographic recap of his career is stunning. I especially enjoyed the wealth of images of his fight posters. These are an underappreciated little art form, and there have been some great ones for Ali fights. It's not a biography, per se; it's more selective, but it's still a valuable overview of a fascinating career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Muhammad Ali book for Youngsters!
The pictures are exciting and the while the reading is difficult, older students could do it.Many students admire Muhammad Ali and the photos will please their eyes and the information will soothe their minds.Ali didn't have a sex scandal, and his arrest was inappropriate and overturned by the Supreme Court. He is an exciting person that kids can look up to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Light & Refreshing
This book could not be called anything more than a brief introduction to the subject.Basically there are five essays by five different authors.First an introduction by James Earl Jones, then four more essays, one each for the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's.All are relatively brief but each has it's own focus and tone, which is nice. The book does not talk at all about the three Ali-Frazier fights, and is pretty thin about the things it does talk about, so in no way could it be considered comprehensive. In fact, a majority of the book's substance is in pictures and snappy quotes. This leads to a book that is "light and refreshing" - which is its strength. Finally, this is not a critical book; all the contributors are definitely fans of Ali.

For someone very familiar with the subject, this is probably not the book for you.For me, I enjoyed the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Mild Disappointment
Overall, this strikes me as a somewhat lazy book.Rather than offer any original writing, the editors simply cobble together previously published writings by Alex Haley (actually a "Playboy" interview of the young Ali by Haley), Norman Mailer, Joyce Carol Oates, and Peter Richmond, along with a very short introduction by James Earl Jones. The book jacket also boasts of "contributions from" the likes of Malcolm X, Jackie Robinson, George Plimpton, Jim Brown, and numerous others, but this turns out to refer simply to brief quotations that pepper the book, mostly as photo captions.

The quality of the text by the four featured writers is fine.Certainly you can't go wrong with Norman Mailer. His book "The Fight," from which the chapter in this book is excerpted, was one of the first serious works about boxing and Muhammad Ali that I read back in the 70s, and the first thing I ever read by Mailer.I was a big fan of Ali going in, and a fan of Mailer as well coming out.

One can always quibble with editing decisions in a book like this, but being familiar with Mailer's "The Fight," I found some of the choices made here rather peculiar. For example, in Mailer's very lengthy account of the Ali-Foreman fight itself, he presents the fifth round as the most dramatic, action-filled, significant round of the entire fight. In this excerpt, the editors choose to include some of Mailer's set-up for that round (e.g., "[Foreman] came out in the fifth with the conviction that if force had not prevailed against Ali up to now, more force was the answer, considerably more force than Ali had ever seen."), but then simply replace that entire climactic round with ellipsis.

I don't believe I had previously read the other three selections, or at most I had read excerpts from them. But none of them are newly rediscovered gems that will come as revelations to serious Ali fans. They are not weak or uninteresting, but they are recycled material with which many readers will already be familiar.

Similarly, there are many fine photos in the book, but little that has not appeared in one or more similar Ali books in the past.(In terms of both text and photos, I strongly prefer Wilfrid Sheed's superficially similar picture book "Muhammad Ali" to this one.)One exception is that this book includes many fight programs, posters, and tickets that I had not previously come across.

The book is marred by many factual errors committed by the editors in their photo captions. There are many things that a proofreader even minimally familiar with Ali's career should have caught, so one must unfortunately infer considerable sloppiness or laziness on the part of those who put this book together.

For example, contrary to what this book tells you, Ali did not defeat Joe Frazier by fifteen round decision in their third fight.Ali was awarded a technical knockout when Frazier's handlers conceded between the fourteenth and fifteenth rounds.Ali's 1972 fight against George Chuvalo was not a fifteen round decision, but a twelve round decision.(He had defeated Chuvalo by fifteen round decision in an earlier fight in 1966; that might be what confused the editors.)The book states flatly that Ken Norton broke Ali's jaw in the second round of their March 1973 fight.Maybe, but different parties have claimed anything from the first to the twelfth round, so the matter is not without uncertainty. The photo identified as being from Ali's 1971 fight against Jurgen Blin is in fact a photo from the 1974 fight against Foreman.

Though flawed, this book still has worthwhile elements. With such a compelling central character, you would expect nothing less. It's not the best Ali book out there by a long shot, but insofar as it recruits a few more young newcomers into the legions of Ali fans, and gives the rest of us an excuse to reminisce about an extraordinary man and his extraordinary life, it cannot be all bad. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Darth Vader Reads the Bible
When I was in college back in the sixties, I took an Old Testament history course. The Bible was, of course, required reading. The professor gave no clue whatsoever as to whether he was a believer, an atheist, or an agnostic, but he recommended that we read the King James Version of the Bible.Back then, "modern" translations were coming out almost daily, and we questioned him why he wanted us to read a centuries old version."Because you'll be exposed to good English," he said, and I had to agree.

In this recording, we have good English read well.James Earl Jones has a distinctive, beautiful voice. His voice is so distinctive that he was chosen as the voice of Darth Vader in the first "Star Wars" trilogy. He sounds much better reading the Bible than he did as the Dark Lord.

A few quibbles make me reduce my rating from five to four stars.1.Background music.Jones' unadorned voice would have been better. Also, the background music consisted largely of instrumental renditions of familiar hymns. As the music played, the words to the hymns came to mind and competed for my attention with the words Jones was reading.2.Jones occasionally varies pronunications.E.g.: In Matthew he calls the prisoner Pilate freed "BARabbas," but in Mark it's "baRABbas."

There's nothing in the quibbles, however, that should prevent you from thoroughly enjoying this rendition of the New Testament. ... Read more
