Product Description
In this completely revised and updated edition (including eight new chapters), Jeffrey Jones charts the evolution and maturation of political entertainment television by examining The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Politically Incorrect/Real Time with Bill Maher, and Michael Moore's TV Nation and The Awful Truth. This volume investigates how and why these shows have been central locations for the critique of political and economic power and an important resource for citizens during numerous political crises. In an age of Truthiness, fake news and humorous political talk have proven themselves viable forms of alternative reporting and critical means for ascertaining truth, and in the process, questioning the legitimacy of news media's role as the primary mediator of political life. The book also addresses the persistent claims that these programs have cynical effects and create misinformed young citizens, demonstrating instead how such programming provide for an informed, active, and meaningful citizenship. The new edition takes account of the many changes that have occurred in television and political culture since Entertaining Politics' initial release. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The American dream used to mean that if you worked hard, saved money, and didn't spend extravagantly, you'd be guaranteed a decent life. That article of faith is no more; it has been replaced by a growing fear that even two incomes will prove insufficient to afford a home in a good neighborhood, a reliable vehicle, quality schools, healthcare, the means to care for aging relatives, and the leisure to properly raise children. The middle class is waking up to the sobering realization that the United States is fast becoming an unaffordable nation.

Transcending ordinary politics, Jeffrey Jones addresses every member of the American community, not as liberal or conservative or as Democrat or Republican, but in the most basic and equal of terms: in their capacities as working persons dependent upon their occupations, their employers, and the government regulation of both to earn a decent living. He uncovers the profound moral consensus among Americans from every walk of life regarding the entitlements that should follow from individual hard work. Jones argues that regardless of political leanings, economic class, gender, and ethnic and racial differences, Americans remain united in the conviction that individuals who work hard should receive decent wages and other resources in return. He goes on to propose a "covenant on affordability," outlining the respective obligations of government, corporations, and individuals in ensuring a life that is affordable for every person who is willing to work hard.

The Unaffordable Nation is a must-read for every American concerned about the decreasing value of his or her labor, alongside the rising costs of nearly everything. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as nebulous as it sounds.
The author posits that there is an unwritten social contract between labor and business that promises that hard work will pay off in the ability to afford a decent life. The author's take was that when non-managerial wages generally drop below the living wage then trouble is a-brewing.

The book starts out with an attempt to show that the definition of a "decent life" is not as amorphous as it sounds, then continues on with details about the social contract.Basically the social contract involves laborers' duty to work hard, and in return business should provide a living wage.

I thought it was actually a pretty well-rounded book, and not rabidly pro-worker like it could have been. It was pretty realistic about the nature of modern global economics. It didn't come off as some socialist diatribe, like you would expect from the title. The writing style was really academic, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relevant, Current and Important
Professor Jones addresses the current issues of our time and our world. Economics, philosophy and issues of globalization are several ways Jones helps us understand the changing times for life in America. It was personal to me because it helped me articulate some of my own questions regarding my career and obligations to society in a changing world.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE UNAFFORDABLE NATION addresses these problems, offering plenty of opportunity for debate.
THE UNAFFORDABLE NATION: SEARCHING FOR A DECENT LIFE IN AMERICA addresses concerns over the affordability of a decent life in America, and should be a part of any high school to college-level library strong in American social issues. In an era where even two incomes often isn't enough to make ends meet, the country is fast becoming an unaffordable nation by those who struggle in the middle and see their families falling to the poorer end of the economic sale - and THE UNAFFORDABLE NATION addresses these problems, offering plenty of opportunity for debate.

Product Description
How did the protests and support of ordinary American citizens affect their country's participation in the Vietnam War? This engrossing book focuses on four social groups—students, African Americans, women, and labor—and investigates the impact of each on American foreign policy during the war.Amazon.com Review
What impact did American society's growing distaste for thewar in Vietnam have on the war itself? RhodriJeffreys-Jones, a professor of American history at the Universityof Edinburgh who studied at American universities during the waryears, focuses on antiwar sentiment and activity as it flowed fromfour particular sectors of American society: students, AfricanAmericans, women, and the labor movement. The chronological narrativeof how each of these segments of America came to turn against the war,and the affect each had on policymakers in Washington, is presentedwith considerable detail and countless anecdotes about players bothgreat and small. For instance, a chapter describing how women becameinvolved in the antiwar movement portrays characters as diverse aspro-Pentagon war correspondent Marguerite Higgins,writers-turned-activists Mary McCarthy and Susan Sontag, andentertainer Eartha Kitt (who turned an innocuous visit to the JohnsonWhite House into an enormous controversy). Going beyond the notablenames, Jeffreys-Jones portrays the depth of involvement of Americanwomen in the antiwar movement with considerable texture.

While Peace Now! offers an insightful look at the turbulentAmerica of the day, the book, with its focus on four specific groupswithin American society, is admittedly limited in its scope. Theauthor's approach is entirely legitimate, but it should perhaps benoted that while the book does succeed in its stated goal, it isn't acomprehensive history of the antiwar movement. --RobertJ. 2-0 out of 5 stars more liberal drivel
unfortunately for the South Vietnames, when we abandoned them, they bore the consequences of our shameful betrayal and intransigence.thousands more died or were "re-educated" and subjected to the tyranny of an authoritarian communist government that imposed its vision of society on those it trod under its jack boots...er, sandals.a brief search of the net will yield much info on the ex-pats who are bitter about how we threw their country to the wolves.withdrawing may having spared the lives of US soldiers, but did NOTHING for South Vietnam.though decently written, this books approach is with blinders to its subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling interpretation of the end of the Vietnman War....
The desires and motives of four social groups are examined herein. The author makes a compelling case for the serial nature of these groups' revolt against the war, and their resultant affect on the US withdrawl fromthe war. ... Read more

Product Description
Leadership, observes Jeffrey Jones, is never about you. What happens to you as a leader stems from a vast array of issues and dynamics over which you have little or no control.
Leadership, Jones also insists, is always about you--Christ's disciple, part of the system, an individual with your own anxieties and a personal life that shapes both your personhood and your relationships.
Heart, Mind, and Strength is about dealing with the tension between these two realities. What we know is important. So is who we are--maybe even more so. Of course, admits Jones, no book can tell u s everything we need to know about leadership--the "what" of it. And certainly no book can shape our personhood--the "who" of leadership. Jones, however, shares both theoretical and practical insights that will inform the "what' and influence the "who" of your leadership in transformative ways. Jones organizes the book around the daily practices of leadership, treating it as both a skill and an art. Heart, Mind, and Strength will enhance your practice of ministry by providing well-grounded theory related to the practical concerns you encounter in the daily work of balancing what you know with who you are. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas of things to do with your kids
I like the unique approach in this parenting book. Rather than giving specific advice, techniques, tricks, and tips to use on your kids, the author approaches good parenting as something that grows out of your own spiritual life. His philosophy is that if you have a strong spiritual life, and if you help your entire family develop spiritually, then good parenting will fall into place.

He has a lot of great activity ideas to help kids and parents bond, and he illustrates how the activities work by telling stories of things he's done with his own kids.

I'm going to recommend that this book be used in our church in our parenting class, because there's a great group study guide included in the book. ... Read more
