Product Description
In a last-ditch stab at fortune and glory, middle-aged adventurer Bill Conan enters a 30,000-mile single-handed round-the-world race. This ultimate test of skill, strength, and endurance leads him across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean's vast expanse, where a sudden change in wind throws him off balance and sends him overboard. Alone in the still, open sea, he struggles to keep from drowning, knowing it is a fight that he will eventually lose…

But Conan has stumbled into the migratory path of a bottle-nosed dolphin named Aka and his tribe. In an exhilarating encounter, he senses Conan's plight, communicates with him, and works to keep him afloat and alive.

A stirring adventure tale, Aka depicts the ancient history of dolphins, their extraordinary traits and abilities, and their eternal friendship with humans. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sail on Sailor
First the good: although this work is fiction, if half of what Jones tells us about Dolphins is true, then it's a fascinating and worthwhile read. Jones delves into the communication and sonar abilities of bottle-nose dolphins, and while I suspect that much of what he writes about pod life is factual, I loved the way he added his fiction to it, making the dolphins infinitely wiser and more spiritual than humans.

The bad: The size of the type in the edition I read was painfully small. Also, I felt that Jones used far too many technical sailing terms for the average reader. Telling me that the main character "...eased the halyard of the shaking mainsail, slowly, a little at a time, and with difficulty reefing it to the boom as he did so, "...and that he "...released the preventer, grabbed the wheel, and heaved in the mainsheet to take up slack,..." meant nothing to me.

Still, a different sort of story about man facing the unpredictableand sometimes ruthless natural world.

- Cayr Ariel Wulff

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tale by a remarkable man
The late Tristan Jones was, in real life, a solo-sailor of small boats; one of those intrepid iconoclasts who look back at the rest of us from the brink with a sardonic grin as if asking how we can stand living in thesafety of the herd.

Aka is Jones's novel of a small-boat sailor whoagrees to enter a solo race around the world, replacing his friend who waskilled in a highway accident. In a parallel story, Aka and his school ofbottle-nose dolphin follow their customary itinerary in their annualmigration to the calving ground at St. Paul's Rocks in the equatorialmid-Atlantic, which, according to Tristan Jones, is what is left of thelost continent of Atlantis, formerly populated by the dolphins' greatfriends, the Sea Kings.

Jones's hero, Conan, is a competent sailor andthe details of life at sea on a small boat are absolutely authentic. Still,he manages to go overboard in mid-ocean and watch his boat nonchalantlysail off without him--

"...and he wept like a lone child lost inthe dark, appalling reaches of infinity."

Tristan Jones hassailed the Atlantic eighteen times, nine times alone. Of his book, Ice,Sterling Hayden, who has himself washed more salt out of his sea-boot socksthan most of us have sailed over, says, "What an epic book written bysuch a glorious man..."

For those of us who are drawn to the seaa story like this, written by a small boat sailor, is ambrosia, whether theauthor writes well or not. Tristan Jones writes very well. He was awardedfirst prize for the most distinguished book of 1979-80 by the Welsh ArtsSociety. he is also a member of the Explorer's Club and has sailed thehighest and lowest latitudes on earth (he has sailed farther north than anyother man.)

About Aka, Jones says: "If my tale can bring topeople ashore a little of the joy, a little of the elation and wonder, andeven a mite of the pain and suffering that voyagers and other mammals knowat sea, then any carping of pierhead critics will be to this book as thesqueaks of an un-oiled sheet-block are to a vessel safely at anchor in herown quiet haven."

Amen!

Excerpt: Kenneth Earl Wilber II (born January 31, 1949) is an American author who has written about adult development, developmental psychology, philosophy, worldcentrism, ecology, and stages of faith. His work formulates what he calls Integral Theory. In 1998, he founded the Integral Institute, for teaching and applications of Integral theory. Ken Wilber was born on January 31, 1949 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 1967, he enrolled as a pre-med student at Duke University, and was almost immediately disillusioned with what science had to offer. He became inspired, like many of his generation, by Eastern literature, particularly the Tao Te Ching. He left Duke, enrolled in the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and completed a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology. In 1973, Wilber completed his first book, The Spectrum of Consciousness, in which he sought to integrate knowledge from disparate fields. After rejections by more than twenty publishers it was finally accepted in 1977 by Quest Books, and he spent a year giving lectures and workshops before going back to writing. He also helped to launch the journal ReVision in 1978. In 1982, New Science Library published his anthology The Holographic Paradigm and other Paradoxes a collection of essays and interviews, including one by David Bohm. The free Guide to Program Selection (GPS) will help you evaluate the texts, the instruction, and the assessments in core reading programs, taking you through many of the procedures described throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guideline for teaching reading!
The book titled, Selecting and Using Core Reading Programs authored by, Peter Dewitz, Susan B. Leahy, Jennifer Jones, and Pamela Maslin Sullivan is a very informative book.It provides guidelines for selecting a core reading program. It also provides examples of how to use different programs to help your children increase their literacy skills. In addition, you will also learn how to manage your time and make lessons motivating.Studies show how each program has worked in different school districts. It compares the programs so you can get an idea of what to expect from each of them.It reinforces the concept that a core reading program needs to be used in conjunction with other resources to create the total literacy program. After reading this text you will be more prepared to make instructional decisions that will help you develop your literacy program to meet your student's needs and keep them engaged. You will better understand how to implement phonics instruction and create readers who have more phonemic awareness.Overall the book really provides straightforward strategies to understand your core reading program and how to use it effectively, enhance instruction, group and keep students motivated, and feel more comfortable and effective when teaching literacy skills. It is well written and provides classroom experiences or scenarios to tie in the concepts behind core reading.I enjoyed this book.It was easy to read and comprehend, and I was able to start implementing some of the concepts in my classroom right away.If you are unsure about how to teach literacy effectively you should read this book. This book really does help you understand how to use core reading programs and how to effectively teach literacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Guide to Selecting and Using Core Reading Programs
I found this book to be very informative. The authors give a historical perspective of core programs, how they are created, and how the instruction is delivered.I especially appreciated the third section that illustrates how to use a core program effectively and provides teachers with many practical ideas for flexible fidelity based on student needs. The authors demonstrate how the use of a core program can provide the structure and foundation for literacy development, but emphasize how teacher decision making based on student needs is the key to a truly successful reading program for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read If You're a Teacher
I was given "The Essential Guide to Selecting and Using Core Reading Programs" by a friend who is very knowledgeable in the area of reading. He suggested I read it, and being a second-year teacher I naturally agreed. How could I turn down the opportunity to become a better teacher? I asked myself.I came home and read the book until after twelve, which everyone knows is way past my bedtime!Needless to say, I had to finally put it down and get some sleep before work the next morning.

This book is informative while easy-to-read.It could be the handbook for a district interested in purchasing a new core reading program, but it also useful because it provides a copious number of suggestions for making one's existing program more effective. This information needs to be made available to all teachers o they can make the best use of their time and resources during their daily reading block.

I also found the charts, tables, & diagrams throughout the book to be easy to interpret and they reinforce and compliment the information discussed in the text.

Finally, the real-life vignettes from people in the field make you feel like you're working right next to the educators, going through the process of selecting and using core reading programs.

This book provides a ton of research-based information and a reference guide so you, the teacher can make informed decisions. In my opinion, this book should have been placed in the basal reader box.I highly recommend "The Essential Guide to Selecting and Using Core Reading Programs."I truly enjoyed it and learned a great deal. ...
