3-0 out of 5 stars The plot has a few weaknesses.
So the bad guys set a trap for the good guys. But why do they expect the good guys to come that way? This is never explained.

After the bad guys are scared away, Pikachu uses his powers to get the victim out of the trap. But why does it take him so long to think of that? This is never explained, either.

Moreover, I cannot understand why the book is not better illustrated.Instead of illustrations which relate directly with the story, we are to be satisfied with already existing pictures of Pokemon characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific for beginning readers who love Pokemon
This book, and the others in the Pokemon Junior series, are great early readers for the simple reason that kids love Pokemon. The text is easy enough for my almost-in-first-grade son to read most of the words byhimself, and the subject matter is (for him at least) much more interestingthan the bear and bunny stuff that's in a lot of easy readers. At thisstage, whatever motivates a kid to read is worth buying. I have bought allof the Pokemon Junior series books that I've seen so far, and my son hasread them all several times. ... Read more

for a Junior pokemon book, this book was good. the plot was so great. I have read this book like a hundred times, and i still can't get enough of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading motivator for Pokemon fans
Like the other Pokemon Junior books, this one has enough of a plot to interest the early-elementary set, and is easy enough to read alone or with only a little help.My six year old is able to read it along with me withjust a little help on the longer or more unfamiliar words. Most of thereally difficult words are the names of Pokemon characters, which he canusually recognize by sight or get from context, which is kind of thrillingfor him.He anxiously awaits each new book in this series, and as aparent, I am glad to see him getting so much pleasure from reading. ... HAS AMERICA LOST ITS MARBLES?
  • Television sensation Glenn Beck warns of White House plots to institute fascism, communism, and other terrifying “isms.”
  • Radio titan Rush Limbaugh charges that a racist Obama regime encourages black schoolchildren to beat up white kids.
  • Evangelical luminary James Dobson frets that Christians will be arrested for thought crimes and people will be allowed to marry donkeys.
  • Protesters in knickers and colonial-style hats march on Washington with signs that order Hitler-like caricatures of President Obama to return to Kenya.

As madness reigns, pundits, politicians, and cab drivers debate the source of the hysteria. Some blame ignorance; some blame racism; some blame the economy.

After poring over mountains of political screeds and heedlessly subjecting himself to countless hours of Fox News, author Michael Wolraich discovered the secret formula that turns ordinary men and women into fire-breathing, smoke-blowing, right wing maniacs. It’s “persecution politics” . . again.

In Blowing Smoke, Wolraich documents, dissects, and deconstructs the myths that underlie the right’s growing reliance on the politics of persecution, from Joe McCarthy to the Tea Party movement. In the process, he delivers an original and compelling hypothesis with penetrating insight and blistering wit.

At turns hilarious, disturbing, and edifying, Blowing Smoke is a must-read account of modern American politics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Any Progressive
Wolriach presents a well-researched, plainly stated case why Americans should be worried about the the so-called grass roots Tea Party, Fox News, and conservative talk radio. There's so much opinion out there on the TV and blogs, it's sometimes hard to separate truth from fiction. This book cuts through the fog of BS that is crowdiing out rational discourse. Where other people have opinions, this book is based on a deep examination of the historical roots of today's right wing backlash.

5-0 out of 5 stars He Knows What's Going On
Our politics have become a bit... um... amped up lately, haven't they?Michael Wolraich could have taken it easy and just did a short and funny litany of extremist uterrings from the right.Instead, he took a more thoughtful approach. Why does our electorate believe things that are clearly false? Why is there so much misinformation in our politics?Wolraich brings the funny, don't worry about that, but this book as some enduring potential too.Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get beyond namecalling.A fun but serious book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Me Pinpoint What Annoys Me So Much About Talk Radio and Fox News
I really loved this book. It does a great job of giving you a framework through which to dissect the ridiculous arguments spewed on Fox and talk radio. It actually gets to be somewhat comical listening to conservative pundits once you realize that they use the exact same argument for virtually every issue:

1) Slippery slope. If we allow gay marriage, we'll have to allow human-toad marriage!
2) Conspiracy. George Soros, the ACLU, ACORN, and the "liberal elite" are beyond everything and have a secret plan to take away your rights!
3) Persecution as a mask for intolerance. I'm not homophobic, but if we legalize gay marriage, priests who refuse to marriage same-sex couples will go to jail. I'm standing up for the priests!
4) Zero sum. If we give more healthcare benefits to the poor, it will destroy healthcare for the rich. And its socialism.

It's also amazing to me to see how the same arguments have been used through history, whether its based on interracial marriage, communism, or equal rights. Arguments that we would consider ridiculous today ("I'm not racist. I want segregated schools because its best for both blacks and whites") are the basis for the flawed arguments we hear today.

Of course, tea partiers and hard-line conservatives won't read this book, but that's not the author's point. His point is to help everyday Americans (dare I say, "real Americans") de-construct persecution politics and either combat it or at least not fall under its spell. There's nothing wrong with Republican or conservative values, but there is something wrong with the way pundits are using racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and conspiracy theories to manipulate us for their own gain. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The plot is a little disappointing.
The story opens with an announcement that Hollywood is releasing a film about Pokemon. But we are never told very much about the movie. This announcement seems to be a mere pretext to reunite Meowth with his former acquaintances.

Moreover, I cannot understand why the book is not better illustrated.Instead of illustrations which relate directly with the story, we are to be satisfied with already existing pictures of Pokemon characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cute story that children and adults alike can enjoy!
This book is a novelization of "Go West, Young Meowth!" (one of the best Pokemon episodes of all time). The episode and the book tell the story of Meowth's past -- how he taught himself to walk on two legs, read, and talk, how he tried to win the love of the beautiful but shallow Meowsie, and how he came to join Team Rocket.Parts of the story are sad for poor Meowth, but Jessie and James come to the rescue and prove just how much they love him. They show him that even if he doesn't fit in with his fellow Meowths, he's still their best friend, and they'll do anything for him.The book's large print, simple writing style, and heartwarming message of friendship make this an excellent story for young children to read.(And even we older TR fans can enjoy it because it shows Jessie, James, and Meowth as they truly are -- beautiful characters who love each other deeply. ^_^)

Product Description
This brand-new comedy-adventure novel for young readers is based directly on the hilarious movie of the same name, released nationwide in May Â'09, and starring Ben Stiller as the whimsical museum guard Larry Daley. Both the film and its novelization are sequels to the 2006 box office winner and New York Times best-selling novelization, Night at the Museum. In this new book, the good-hearted dreamer Larry Daley must say good-bye to his famous friends from history who magically came to life during closing hours at New YorkÂ's Natural History Museum. They are being replaced by virtual hologram exhibits, and the originals have been packed up and shipped off to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Then, Larry learns that the ancient Egyptian tablet of Ahkmenrah was also shipped by mistake, which allows the new acquisitions to come back to life! Among them are an evil ancient pharaoh, Ivan the Terrible of Czarist Russia, the American gangster Al Capone, FranceÂ's Emperor Napoleon, and the famous woman pilot Amelia Earhart. ItÂ's LarryÂ's job to stop a nefarious plot by evil-doers in that group. Fortunately, Larry gets vital help from Amelia Earhart. HereÂ's a delightful concoction of comedy, adventure, and fantasy that kids wonÂ't want to put down until theyÂ've reached the last page. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (2)

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for students, parents and teachers
I'm always looking for children's books that help explain historical events in a kid-friendly way. Candy Bomber fits that criterion for World War II and its aftermath.

The book is set in 1948 and is about Lt. Gail S. Halvorsen, C-54 cargo pilot. One day, on a visit to Berlin, he shared gum with a group of children. He told them he would drop candy and gum (using tiny parachutes) over the city next time he flew over, as long as they would share it. The kids agreed. He told them they would know which was the right plane because he would "wiggle the wings."

Each time he passed and dropped candy, more kids were waiting. Letters began to pour in to the airport thanking them for the candy. It was now public. Instead of being reprimanded, his candy airlift eventually became a USAF-sanctioned operation that lasted almost two years. In that time, tons of candy was dropped to the children who waited below.

The story is fun, the text is easy to read and the black and white photos are interesting for both kids and adults. There's a biography of the pilot and a historical note about World War II in the back of the book.

Candy Bomber is wonderful family reading, as well as independent reading for students who are in grades 4 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspirational story of one person making a difference
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Michael O. Tunnell's inspirational account of how one person can make a difference in the world. Tunnell tells the story of U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Gail Halvorsen, who was one of a group of U.S. and British pilots transporting food to the citizens of West Berlin in 1948 during the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Tunnell provides concise and well-written background on what happened in Germany at the end of the war and how this blockade came about in the first place.

When Halvorsen first encounters the children of West Berlin, he is struck by their dignity and their commitment to freedom. After briefly conversing with a group of children on the other side of the airfield fence, he decides, on a whim, to give the children the two sticks of Doublemint gum in his pocket. Breaking them in half, he is sure that a fight over the four little sticks will break out among the candy-starved children. Instead, he is astonished to see that there was no fighting. Suddenly, Halvorsen had an inspiration; why not drop some gum and candy on his next trip to Berlin? He told the delighted children of his plan, and they asked how they would recognize his plane. Halvorsen explained that he'd give them a signal--"When I get overhead, I'll wiggle the wings."

Halvorsen began his drops by asking his buddies to donate their personal candy rations, rations that were as valuable as currency in Germany. Not asking permission of his superiors, Halvorsen started his candy drops, using handkerchiefs to make parachutes in order to drop the candy in small packages. Soon mail began to pour in for Uncle Wiggly Wings or the Chocolate Pilot, and Halvorsen's superiors discovered his secret. Halvorsen was sure his candy dropping days were over, but instead the military was delighted with the terrific publicity the candy drops were generating. The Air Force adopted the name "Operation Little Vittles" for the candy drops and even hired two German secretaries to deal with all the incoming mail. The campaign soon spread, leading to candy drops all over the city, and donations of candy from individuals and companies in the United States, and as far away as Australia.

Lt. Halvorsen became a media celebrity, and became a hero to the children of West Berlin. It's hard for us to imagine today what these gifts of candy meant to the children of Berlin, and Tunnell has collected many anecdotes which allow us to experience their feelings. Halvorsen continued his career with the Air Force long after the candy drop ended, but he and the children never forgot. In fact, when he returned to Berlin in 1970 as Commander of the base there, he was deluged with dinner invitations from grateful children, now grown. Halvorsen was even given the honor of leading Germany's team into the arena in Salt Lake City during the 2002 Winter Olympics. The book concludes with a biographical note about additional humanitarian missions Halvorsen has participated in, including candy drops to other war-torn regions such as Kosovo. At 87, he was even able to attend a ceremony in Germany commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.

The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs and memorabilia from Halversen's personal collection, including some of the hundreds of letters he received from Berlin's grateful children. The author also includes a brief bibliography as well as a historical note providing additional background material on World War II and its aftermath.

This book would be an outstanding addition to school and public libraries, and could be read in conjunction with Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot,, a picture book on the same topic by Margot Theirs Raven (Sleeping Bear Press, 2002). ... Read more

In triumph and disaster, Junior Kroll has a comical way of altering the course of events. He plays in a kazoo quartet, frees the dinner party lobsters, steals one neighbor’s roses as a present for another, and decorates Grandfather’s birthday cake with “little chocolate flies.” Michael Paraskevas’s zany illustrations bring these offbeat, bittersweet poems to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry Fun for Adults and Children Alike
If your child is turned off by most poetry, don't give up till you meet Jr.Kroll. He gets into all kinds of scrapes, some of them of his own making. Lots of funny twists to the stories. We've loved this book for 5 years now, and my boys, now 9&10, still choose it when they have to memorize/recite a work of poetry for class. Jr. Kroll is definetely a keeper!

But just a short six months later she begs to have me read it. Just shows that you shouldn't underestimate what your child understands. And it is a relief as a parent/ reader to get such enjoyable material at bedtime!
