2-0 out of 5 stars Cats (Junior Petkeeper's Library)
ISBN 0851668119 (British edition) 0531041190 (U.S. edition) - Printed in Great Britain. The red-eyed, sort of scary looking cat on the cover was my first indicator that this book wasn't quite what I wanted it to be. Somewhere along the way, the folks behind this book could surely have found an image of a cat that didn't, in any way, appear to be possessed by demons.

From the introduction, explaining what to expect - of yourself and the cat - when you get a new cat, all the way to a checklist at the end, Cats covers almost every foreseeable question that a young petowner might ask. Information on diet, litterboxes and routine veterinary care are included, as well as some advice on where you can find the right pet for your family.

The book itself isn't terrible. I gave it 2 stars because what it is, is outdated. That, and I almost get the feeling that author Fiona Henrie has never owned a cat and possibly never met one. The book suggests that you should get a bed for your cat. This would indicate a wild hope that a cat can be tucked in and will sleep where he or she is told. This, in reality, is usually not the case. A bed is nice, and sometimes a cat will deign to sleep in one, but mostly, they'll sleep wherever they want. In regards to litterbox use, the author includes tips for training your kitten. I've never, after several hundred cats, met one who didn't know - from birth - to use the litterbox, but if you feel you want to train your kitten, by all means, do. BUT, there's a piece of advice that cracked me up: "Put lots of newspaper on the floor around the cat's bed at night, in case it cannot get to the litter box in time." Once again, there's a mighty fine chance that your cat isn't going to be IN his or her bed when the sudden need to bolt for the litterbox strikes. More than that, AT NIGHT, your cat is more likely to be awake than asleep ANYWHERE. Cats are nocturnal. The page about diet talks about meat, as if you're going to be making dinner for the cat. Now, some people do that and it's probably good for your cat - but the book doesn't discuss cat food except in a sidebar/box and, there, it only mentions canned food. When discussing collars, the safer breakaway collars aren't mentioned. The author writes about installing a cat door, rather than encouraging a pet owner to keep a cat indoors, where it is much safer.

Last, on the text, there's a question of what age range of children this is written for, because the book doesn't say. The font is large and fairly simple but with this small plus comes with a negative. Sentences are broken up unnecessarily. "Cats lick themselves all over. This helps to keep their fur clean.", for example. Worse, every sentence is a new paragraph and every page is cluttered up with sidebar/boxes of info that ought to have been part of the text. This is poor writing, a messy layout and lazy editing. The highpoint of the book is the images, beautiful full color photos by Marc Henrie. Some of the images are hilarious - the high-waisted, belted jeans of the 1970s and a couple very small peeks at the odder home decor choices of the time - but most are of pretty cats, being cats.

If you feel like you need this book, you probably don't. You need something more up-to-date, for your cat's sake. The Junior Petkeeper's Library includes other books on other animals, including Dogs (Junior Petkeeper's Library), Gerbils (Junior Petkeeper's Library), and Rabbits (Junior Petkeeper's Library), none of which I have any confidence in at the moment.

Michael Foxton's riotously candid memoir of his adventures as a junior doctor has established itself as a classic.Medics of all kinds; fans of Casualty, Holby City, Cardiac Arrest; humour fans. For two years, Michael Foxton wrote about his experiences as a junior doctor in the NHS for the "Guardian". Vivid, hilarious and often alarming, his book has gone on to find a cult following among doctors and patients alike. His observations illuminate the quirks, horrors and delights of all aspects of doctoring, from casualty to the psychiatric ward. Foxton tells us what it really feels like to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week and introduces us to a mixed cast of patient that includes the rude, the violent and the outrageously flirtatious. 5-0 out of 5 stars BUY this book for an intern or medical student
This book is an amazing summary of life as experienced by an intern.
Any intern who dares to be honest, would admit that he/she has experienced most (if not all) of what Dr Foxton describes.
Every now and then, I read a chapter to remind me of what it was like to be the lowest on the totem pole.
Lots of "laugh out loud" situations mixed in well with some sad ones. Really worth reading if your are an MD/MBChB especially UK or commonwealth trained. I am unsure whether it would be that humorous for non-medically trained. Some of the comments made seem disrespectful, but should be seen in the light of an often overworked and under appreciated young doctor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars just a couple of flaws in the plot
The story concerns a surfer whose ambition is to ride a giant wave which appears only once every 20 years and to plant a flag on a small island to which the wave would bring him.

At the end of the story, he rides that wave out of the necessity of saving a Pokemon which he owns.He plants the flag, but the story never explains how he happened to have that flag in his hand while he was so concerned over saving his Pokemon.

Furthermore, is the island is so remote that planting the flag there is proof of riding the giant wave?If so, then how does he get back to shore where the other characters congratulate him?

Just one gripe about the Scholastic Pokemon books: I wish they would have illustrations that fit they stories, rather than cutting corners with stock pictures of Pokemon characters.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Pokemon" meets "Baywatch"?
"Surf's Up, Pikachu!", adapted by Bill Michaels, is #1 in the Pokemon Junior book series. Geared towards younger readers, this book recounts an adventure involving the Pokemon characters.

I have only a passing familiarity with the Pokemon phenomenon, and my impression of this book is that it is mainly geared to readers who already are conversant in the Pokemon mythos. I imagine that kids who aren't Pokemon fans will get 3 pages into this and go "Huh?"

The story begins with Ash and Pikachu at the beach on Seafoam Island. They meet Victor, a surfer who, together with his own Pokemon, plans to surf a legendary wave known as Humungadunga. But trouble arrives in the form of villainous Team Rocket.

The story is OK, but the illustrations seem to be merely random pictures of Pokemon characters; these illustrations seem to have no real relationship with the story. If your beginning reader is a Pokemon fan, he/she might like the book; otherwise, I can't recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars get your pokemon early reader to read
My second grade son dreaded reading at home for leisure or homework.Once he was introduced to the Pokemon junior series he began waking up early to read before school! The books are very appropriate for first and second graders with sight vocabulary and sentence structure levels set for late first grade or early second grade.I wouldn't want to read these myself as a mom, but my son is reading every day with this series.Research shows that the number of minutes spent reading a day correlates to a child's success in school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for young Pokemon fans
My five year old Pokemon fan enjoyed the story -- Ash and Pikachu meet a surfer (and his unusual Pikachu) who dreams of surfing the world's biggest wave. There are no color illustrations, just black and white drawings of the characters, but my daughter didn't seem to mind. The book is fairly easy to read, but I wouldn't call it a first-step reader. What I liked best about the story was that it showed how Ash and Pikachu care for each other. It wasn't just about Pokemon battles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Suprise and Exciting Pokemon Junior Book
Wow!This book surfs! Its a holiday for Ash and Pikachu. There's a wave that is the biggest in the world that come in 20 years. But there's trouble inthere and ending with suprise/happy endings.Gotta buy that book. ... Read more
