5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book to read and share
A friend gave me this book and once I started reading it I didn't want to put it down.I believe the title might be misleading because I believe it hits on many things in life and many situations that we all go through, this book is for everyone.I loved the books so much I bought ten of them and passed them out to family and friends.I received the same reaction from the people I gave it to!

5-0 out of 5 stars from fear to love
From Fear to Love provides a refreshing, honest outlook on real relationships. An incredible ability to share about the intense trials of their own lives and marriage, the authors were able to grab ahold the hands of their readers and journey through the pain and fear that so often dominates many relationships. However, Ray and Nancy Kane refuse to get distracted or lose hope in their fear, but instead fight through their battles of fear and control until a real, sincere love was found. This book gives hope and inspiration to those struggling to find sincere, unselfish love. They write in a simple, enjoyable manner that all readers can relate to.

4-0 out of 5 stars R.S.V.P.
"The experience of overcoming fear is extraordinarily delightful."-- Bertrand Russell.

Ray and Nancy Kane's book is that kind of experience. The Kanes examine fears that can paralyze individuals, especially fears that get played out in relationships. The reader doesn't feel isolated from the counselors/authors because they own up to their own struggles with fear as a couple. They use their struggles as a spring board to say, "Even as professional counselors, we know marriage is tough, we've been there. But we didn't stay trapped in fear and you don't have to either. There is a way out. It is love -- real love." The Kanes go on to suggest practical ways to conquer fear through love, especially in marriage.

They also look at fears in our society and offer reasons why love is the only force that can conquer fear. The power of the love they are talking about becomes very clear in the chapter, "Love that overcomes." There they talk about 9/11 as a example of love and courage winning out over fear. They mention the firefighters who charged up stairs to save strangers, and men like Todd Beamer -- who let love override fear. "Like beacons of light, certain individuals illumined a path for usto follow. They have showed us that when love and courage prevail, anything can be overcome" (181). This is not mushy love, or Hollywood-style love, it is love made of stuff that does not melt under fire.

The Kanes state that it is not their experience as professional counselors, but their mutual faith in God that is what enables them to love sacrifically and powerfully. And, at the end of the book they write,"We invite you to join those who have loved without limits and given without restriction both their care and compassion. Let us move from fear to true, life-transforming love." The invitation is a welcome one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From the Inside Flap
Things are changing...The Third World is on the march and the church in that part of the world has come of age.The problems we now encounter are more subtle and therefore more difficult to solve than those of the nineteenth century. At the same time we are faced with unprecedented opportunities undreamed of a hundred years ago.

In this forward- looking text, Dr. Kane steers a positive course for the thrust of evangelical mission in our day and in the future. There must be an avoidance of the current, extreme attitudes:"to see only the problems and give way to discouragement, or to see only the opportunities and do nothing to solve the problems."

Affirming God's purpose for the church and for the world, Dr. Kane challenges:"Surely the Christian mission is at the very center of that purpose, and if we want to be identified with Him in its outworking we had better understand and support missions at home and abroad."

With this assessment of mission today and its emerging challenges, readers will become not only more knowledgeable, but also feel more keenly motivated toward positive response and action. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great missions textbook
The subtitle for "A Global View of Christian Missions" is "from Pentecost to the Present."This subtitle is slightly misleading.Only the first hundred pages of this book are devoted to the history of missions from Pentecost to the beginning of what many call the modern missionary movement.Much of Kane's emphasis is on Protestant missions beginning with William Carey in the late eighteenth century. After the first hundred pages the book takes a regional view of missions addressing the missionary movements in each country.
This country by country account of missions is an interesting way at looking at history. The drawback is that there are many events, people, and movements that will overlap from country to country. This exercise of looking at each individual country truly gives the reader a global view of missions. Many missions books will generalize and overlook the smaller nations, but this book takes the reader to every single nation on the planet and shows the reader the work of the church in that nation.
There were a few things that impressed me as I read this book.First was the work of the Moravians. In doing research for other projects I have learned a little bit about Zinzendorf and the Moravians, but I was struck by the tremendous missionary zeal of this group. They believed that each person was responsible for the salvation of the world.Their story was a great encouragement to me that the laity must be motivated for ministry, not only at home, but also abroad.
The second thing that made an impression upon me from reading this book was the story of William Carey. As a child I heard the story of William Carey, and I knew that he was a missionary to India, but I had no idea of the tremendous impact of his life and ministry. The reader can tell that William Carey is a favorite subject of the author. This is the story of one man whose life was totally surrendered to God.He was willing to do whatever God called him to do.He understood that salvation was a personal decision and that the great commission was still a requirement for the individual Christian and for the church. He not only called the church to missions, but led by example by going to India. When he was there he gave the rest of his life to fulfilling the great commission in India.
The final impression I received from "A Global View of Christian Missions" was a global view. Before I read this book I enjoyed history and was a supporter of missions, but I didn't have that total picture or that "global view."Looking at each individual country seems a bit tedious. It probably isn't all that important that I know about the activity of the cause of Christ in Zambia or Malawi, but there is value in this exercise. We get busy and tend to get wrapped up in our own ministry and taking a global view of things is hard.I know plenty of missionaries, but when you take the time to see how God has been working in each country in the world you get a little bit overwhelmed. In some places the missionaries had great success, in other places they struggled for years before they saw any converts.Through all of this God has been working around the world. It also encourages me that God is working in my sometimes obscure corner of the world. ...
