The Assassins by Elia Kazan
It begins with a murder, but it does not end there.The Assassins is the dramatic story of two murders, but it is more - much more.It is the story of a murderous way of life that threatens us all.It is an unforgettable reading experience.The Pittsburg Press calls it a suspenseful taught novel that seers the emotions. The Saturday Review says "A powerful and disturbing novel with personality".

Terrific character development and interplay
While I was around during the "hippie" era I was not a part of the genre. I do remember the constant friction between the war protestors and the military or establishment folks. The characters are very believable and generally react as you would expect. I guess the disturbing part of the story is how everyone expected the eventual trial decision. Even more how Sergeant Morales wanted the reward for the almost staged attack on himself. The story got me thinking a lot about the early 70s. I suppose being a young adult at the time gave me more appreciation for the twists and turns developed by Mr. Kazan.

horrible, borderline unreadable
It's difficult to express just how bad this book is.I knew it was bad on page 5 when the author describes a character as "finding the brown marks on everyone's underwears".Then, on page 8, the author places saguaro cactuses in northern New Mexico.And then it only gets worse.

Not Much Action
I thought there was going to more action with this book based on the title.That was not the case; there is more of an overall story that takes the full length of the book to develop.The story is put together very well and the characters are great.It just did not move fast enough for me.If you like the pace and style of his movies, then you will like this book.

greataccount of hippies and old-fashioned army-people
Exellent book on the generational conflict of the hippie-era. It's a story about the coldblooded killing of a hippie, a murder that confronts both sides of the community in an army-base-city in New Mexico: The so-calledfree-minded, well-drugged hippies opposing everything the old system has tooffer, and the cynical conservative army-people. It's a hillarious, yetserious, story that perfectly describes the absurdities of an americanperiod, the generational conflict - and, most of all, the very loss of truehuman feeling in a time full of systems and ideologies. Drama Study Packs Message Powerfully
As an avid follower of the more satirical innovations in theatre, I was surprised to read a wonderful book that made use of a singular technique in conveying what might otherwise have been distinctly dry academic material. Choosing Stanislavsky, Bert Brecht, and Pete Brook is a stroke of inspiration given a critical technique that writes close to the bone with great sardonic wit! Jones' connection of Stanislavsky with the tradition of Russian "clown"(ing) is especially awakening, particularly vis-a-vis the chapter on pratfall, pedantry and logorrhea. Here David Jones plays the method actor's part to a "T." The chapter on Berthold Brecht and epic theatre is told in epic style, as Jones recounts--Homer-like--the daring theatrical exploits of this great proletariat warrior, swelling to epic proportions in descriptions of some of his finest work. What is somewhat confusing is the inclusion of Kazan with little reference to Kazan's ironic connection to Senator McCarthy's "UnAmerican" hearings,where Kazan "named names," in a highly misunderstood fashion. Much as Stanley in "Streetcar" names Stella with muscular, brute and feral but ambiguous elan. As a professor of 20th Century Aeolian Elaboration and a Narcissus Foundation for Literary Studies Fellow, I highly recommend this book! Kudos to David Richard Jones on his crowning achievement.

No surprises
This book may be about great directors at work - but the stories themsleves are told in not sucha a great way.If you are familiar with their directing forms - you shall not find any surprises; however, if you are planning on starting up your "directors" studies, this might be a neat start, that is, if you are into anecdoctes with academic airs.I suggest reading the masters themselves without Mr. D.R. Amid extraordinary controversy at the Academy Awards ceremony in 1999, Elia Kazan was belatedly presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for his distinguished career as a director of American films. Despite the protests regarding his "friendly" testimony at the HUAC hearings in 1952, there was never any question that Kazan's cinematic accomplishments merited the long-overdue award. Few would dispute his being one of the great creative artists of the twentieth century.

Born an Anatolian Greek in Istanbul in 1909, Kazan emigrated with his parents from Turkey to the United States when he was four. As a young New York director, Kazan revolutionized American theater with his productions of A Streetcar Named Desire and Death of a Salesman. He was the director also of some of Hollywood's most acclaimed films, including A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Gentleman's Agreement, A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata!, East of Eden, and On the Waterfront. Nevertheless, all his accomplishments since 1952 were greatly affected by his decision during the Cold War to testify at the HUAC hearings and to give the names of Communists he knew in the film industry.

In this collection as he discusses his social themes, his relationship with actors, his collaborations with writers, and his film style, Kazan is passionate, blunt, and often colorfully opinionated. The interviews cover nearly forty years and reveal a man who is remarkably thoughtful, candid, and willing to discuss any aspect of his long career. He speaks of his close relationships with Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Marlon Brando, and James Dean; of his involvement with the Group Theatre, the Actors Studio, Lincoln Center, and "method" acting; of his many artistic successes and failures; and of his difficult decision to testify at the HUAC hearings.

The author looks at DuBose Heyward in the context of the chequered history of the American South and race relations.The city of Charleston seems to have been a primary influence on Heyward and Hutchisson explores this with reference to the rich cultural/artistic outpourings of this colourful State. A story about need of love
"Arrangement" is one of the best books by E.Kazan. It's a story about some sort of a system or arrangement, in which we live. A system where a man is only a small cog in the wheel. And one day he matures to change his life, to become individual. Kazan tries to compere things uncomparable, feelings to a person with the wholeness. Eddie has all that he wants. A good wife, beautiful house, car, plum job and all that jazz, wine and dine. Seemingly a wonderful life. One day he meets a woman. He falls in love. She shows him another side of life. Life full of emotions, passion, just utter madness for him. This romance changes his approach to life. Suddenly he can perceive everything from another perspective. He can relish his own life. Unfortunately the system never forgets its men. Eddie must choose between the wife with a comfortable life, and the mistress with freedom and love. His choice is simple - the freedom. But freedom on exile becouse the system doesn't like dissidents. He loses all but has love of his woman. Reading this book one wonders how deep the need for love is. How love can change our lifes.
