3-0 out of 5 stars A Musical Genius
There were many versions of "Showboat" both on stage and in the movies. One of the best was in January 1946 at the Ziegfield Theatre in New York, when the torch singer, Helen Morgan, was Julie and sang "Why Was I Born?"Allan Jones played Gaylord and sang "Only Make Believe."With the Druary Lane Orchestra in London, Paul Robeson recorded Kern's symphonic poem, "Old Man River" and "I Still Suits Me."He was in the 1951 movie version which starred Ava Garnder and Howard Keel.A revival of sorts in 1971 had a long run at London's Adelphia Theatre. This collaboration with Hammerstein providing the music and Jerry the lyrics made him well-known outside of his native New York.

Jerome Kern was born in 1885 in New York.He work with Ira Gershwin on "Cover Girl," which starred Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly. He allowed a semi-biography of his life to take place with the musical TILL THE CLOUDS ROLLL BY.Some of his most successful lyrics include "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," "Look for the Silver Lining," "Long Ago and Far Away," "All the Things You Are." and Sinatra's version of "Old Man River" in this fictional biography. His daughter, Betty did not find it flattering of her dad.He gave small dinner parties at the Beverly Wilshire where he was "able to make a bum out of Cicero, Mark Anthony, and Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg."

He was too sophisticated for California and rode the train back to New York.He and wife Eva lugged daughter, Betty, from coast to coast, first with a nurse, then governess, lastly with her own son.He died Sunday, November 11, 1945.The show, "Music In the Air" included a song which could well have been Jerry's epitaph:'The music's sweet...the words are true...The song is you.' ...
