4-0 out of 5 stars good movie
I really like the movie but I was dissapointed in the quality of the disc. It was scratched when I received it and it skips in the DVD player. I can only watch it on my computer

5-0 out of 5 stars Hearfelt truth's
Movies don't often have the effect on me that this movie had! It had hit home so close! Yet, I couldn't stop watching! Every child is special and this movie makes you realize it over and over again. It also helps to understand a childs behaviour under certain circumstances better. It not only shows the problems, but also gives answers. I would recommend each and every parent to watch this movie - especially if you have a child with special needs! I saw a preview of the movie beforehand and it intriged me very much - I just knew I want to see it - no matter what! I have a son with special needs and it helped me to understand so many behaviours better!

4-0 out of 5 stars All viewers are different
In the best of Indian cinematographic tradition, the happy ending follows misunderstanding, singing, crying and all the fighting of evil with good whilst an art schoolteacher helps eight-year- old pupil to realise boy's abilities and saves him from placing in school for mentally retarded.

Some Westerners could find a line of more special in depicting such a deep involvement of young father into strange boy's privacy, which is, perhaps, differentiate cultures round a globe while movie shown the middle class modern Indians, so nicely different from usual landscapes of country-side villains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece ! Must for all parents
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Being a father of two children, this movie opens your eyes & changes your attitude towards children. At times, we as parents, fail to understand our own children & instead of helping them, we tend to ignore their capabilities & limitations. This movie portrays that same failure.

Though this movie tackles the subject of a dyslexic child, I personally feel that the message can apply to any child. Every child is different. It is important to understand every child differently and recognize his or her weakness and talent. That is so well picturized in this movie.

The movie goes on to show that there is so much pressure on the little children to do well in all aspects of life. That pressure can bury the child's own desire to do something different.

I would really recommend this movie for every parent. Not just parents but to everyone. This movie should be shown in all schools across India & abroad. As parents and teachers, it is important for us to help children by understanding them & not by pressuring them to perform well.

Great masterpiece by Aamir Khan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully touching story, Bollywood's best yet
Even with only a rip-off copy that has no English subtitles, I must judge this to be one of the best movies I've ever seen. While I am indeed a fan of Mr. Aamir Khan, he is not the true star of this movie. The child actor, Darsheel Safary, is the one who should rightfully hold that title. His powerful performance carries this film, perfectly projecting the emotions that can only be felt by an abandoned child. This movie will touch your heart.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not exciting.
This movie is set in India in the late 1898 according to the beginning of the movie. It is about the Religious differences that occur because of the British invasion to divide India.Their is a smaller story that takes effect, the nanny and her muslim friends who propose to her, one is rejected and the other she agrees to marry. You don't know what happens to the nanny in the end, the movie gives you three options of what may have happened. The story is told by the young girl who is watched by the nanny, she tells you what may have happened to the nanny in the end, but even she doesn't know. The movie follows for 50 years, at 1947 at the end of the movie, the little girl is all grown up and she says its 50 years later and she doesn't know what happened to her nanny.

Also, when the Muslim "sisters" are killed, its not actual sisters, its Muslim sisters, as in sisters of the faith.Another reviewer didn't see that.Just thought I would clarify

If you like historical type movies you will enjoy this one.I had to keep the subtitles on to understand what they were saying because of the thick accents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mehta's Earth divided by religion.
Deepa Mehta is best known for her extraordinary trilogy:Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005).Based upon Bapsi Sidhwa's autobiographical novel, Cracking India, the second film in the series, Earth, tells the epic tale of the 1947 partition of the British Indian Empire from the perspective of a disabled eight-year-old Parsi girl named "Lenny-baby" (Maia Sethna). Lenny lives with one of her legs in a brace. Her beautiful Hindu nanny, Shanta (Nandita Das), falls in love with a Muslim masseur, Hasan (Rahul Khanna), but also likes Dil Navaz (Aamir Khan), also known as "Ice Candy Man." Dil loves Shanta, and hopes that one day she will be his wife. Lenny observes eveything around her. When Muslim passengers are found murdered on a train, tensions erupt between Muslims and Hindus, resulting in mob violence and arson.Religious differences divide their country, but Shanta and Hasan are united by their love.As Lenny bears witness to the unfolding civil war around her, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Parsees, and Christians find themselves at odds with one another, and Ice Candy Man is transformed from a friend into a madman. The film features mesmerizing imagery and a beautiful soundtrack composed by A. R. Rahman.Earth resonates on many levels. It is sensual, intelligent, and beautiful.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devastating Film on the Partition of India
This is a devastating film about the partition of India seen through the eyes of a little girl in Lahore.A wealthy family Parsee family who follow the religion Zoroastrianism (which is an ancient Persian religion) have a beautiful Hindu nanny who attracts the young men and the family dotes after. As the independence of India nears and the partition of India becomes more likely, the tension between Muslims and Hindus are intense. While Sikhs and Parsees tend to live on the sidelines, they find it difficult to resist the pressures of the Muslim majority. The hatred of Hindus grow. What can a little girl make of the tension and how does her nanny feel about all this?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as "Water"
I gravitated toward this movie after seeing "Water," which I thought was amazing. "Earth" seemed to me to be, though ambitious in scope and subject, a much less accomplished film--somewhat pedantic and leaden, awkward and fragmented. The characters all too obviously stand in for aspects of the social and political landscape, whereas in "Water," the characters' stories and relationships with each other, while embodying larger issues, were for me much more involving, immediate, vivid, and poignant. I think Mehta grew enormously as a filmmaker between making these films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devastation on Film
I decided that because Water and Fire were such brilliant films, I had to see Earth as well.Deepa Mehta is an unbelievably remarkable film-maker, and I knew that Earth would be up to her usual genius - beautiful shots, tenderness and pain, all I have come to expect from her.Earth, however, so aptly titled, went far beyond what I expected.First of all, its educational aspect cannot be overlooked - I thought I knew Indian history, but things on a page are very different from the visceral definition of what they mean captured on film. The sudden barbarism of people who had lived peacefully side by side for centuries, is beautifully rendered using a group of friends who represent all the factions that emerged at Britian's departure from and catastrophic division of India. The agony of loss and suffering of love are painted so believably by this most intelligent and creative director that you are there, aching with the characters.Earth is a painfully beautiful film, devastating and gorgeous at once, and totally, frighteningly, unforgettable. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A bit dated but solid & well-acted
This is about a poor, high principled, recent engineering graduate from Darjeeling, called Raj (Shahrukh Khan), who moves to Bombay to become rich and successful. He meets the love of his life (Juhi Chalwa) and starts making his way. Forces start opposing his rise and he is forced to look at whether he can maintain his principles in the realities of Bombay's business world.
From 1992 it is looking a little dated. The songs and dances are fine but none particularly stand out. However all the acting is solid and SRK & Juhi are in the early stages of the great paring they continued with in other movies. There is good chemistry and they both are very watchable. SRK plays it straight and does both the conflicted aspirant and person of principles very well - as he later did in many other movies too!
Elsewhere on the Net it tends to score above average and that's where I'd put it too.
This is decent entertaining Bollywood and worth a watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie

4-0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and above-average Bollywood horror
Though I watched "Bhoot" some time ago, this is one Bollywood horror movie that has remained embedded in my consciousness compared to all the other trite offerings that purport to be Bollywood horror. What elevates this above average horror is the credible acting and pairing of leads Ajay Devgan and Urmila Matondkar who portray a married couple living in a haunted apartment, as well as credible performances by actors in supporting roles such as Rekha, Nana Patekar, Tanuja, Fardeen Khan, and Victor Banerjee. It also helps that the director, Ramgopal Varma, utilizes sound effects and lighting to create truly chilling scenes.

This is an atmospheric horror movie which though not wholly original - any fan of horror movies will find shades of "Ju-On", "The Exorcist" etc. in this story, does effectively deliver some authentic scares. The story revolves around married couple, Vishal (Ajay Devgan) and Swati (Urmila Matondkar) who are apartment hunting. Vishal is captivated by an apartment on the 12th floor of a building despite its ominous past - a young woman had apparently jumped to her death from the balcony. Being non-superstitious, Vishal leases the apartment without bothering to inform Swati.

Whilst Vishal goes off to work each day, Swati spends long hours in the apartment and before long, senses there is some creepy and supernatural presence in their home, one which she feels has malicious intent. Vishal dismisses his wife's concerns, attributing her "delusions" to a psychological problem and it is only much later, when his wife's very life and soul are at stake that Vishal struggles desperately against time to uncover the horrifying truth behind the manifestation.

The tightly-woven story and credible acting and good use of effects make this a creepy movie that has some genuinely scary moments. The fact that the movie has no songs in it, unlike many Bollywood movies is a plus point as it allows the story to flow without any jarring interruptions. All in all, this is well worth watching for fans of Asian & foreign horror movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary. Oh Yeah!!!!
Rarely does a movie explain itself so entirely in the first few seconds. But Bhoot does exactly that. The starting credits roll to jarringly loud sounds, forewarning that the movie is going to use sound as its primary weapon. A short message advises persons with heart ailments and pregnant women not to watch this movie, and also that incidents in this movie do not conform to the beliefs of the director. The first part is really good advice, and should not be laughed off. That is, unless you want to die in a theatre or have stillborn babies. And the remaining part concedes that the plot is quite unambitious and ordinary. That said, Bhoot is the slickest, spookiest and hence most enjoyable horror movie to be released in quite some time.
The story is about a haunted apartment in a flat, to which a newlywed couple move in. Firstly, the movie it has excellent casting. All the characters are reasonably well fleshed out (except for the weird housemaid) and played by proven actors. I know this is something that is noted only by hotshot critics to estalish their credentials but it really makes a difference to the movie. Especially interesting are the police inspector and the psychatrist. The shots in the apartment are positioned to include a lots of nooks; out of which the haunts could jump out. The movie seems slightly inspired by Sixth Sense, The Ring and later by The Exorcist, but only in devices and not story. The first half is really creepy and gives you shocks aplenty (somewhat like the first few minutes of The Ring). The second half has an awesome posession scene which is more menacing that of The Excorcist even without using the slightest bit of gore. In a truly chilling scene the possessed writhing heroine echoes the words psychatrist's ailing daughter said to him. Only minutes later the pschatrist learns of his daughter's death due to blood cancer. However, it falters a bit during the second half because of the ordinary plot. Thankfully, an ordinary plot also means no irritating holes in the plot(something that totally spoiled The Ring). As for other nitpicks, there is a theatre scene which shows all the people in the theatre as zombies, which could have been avoided.
My respect for director Ramgopal Varma has increased manifold with this movie as he dared to make a songless horror movie with mainstream stars, in an industry that thrives on generic ten song'd ten fight'd 'family masala' movies.
Despite its innocuous setting the movie could creep out the entire hooting and jeering audience (comprised mainly of me and my mates) to an uneasy silence. What more could you ask from a movie of this make? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Family drama
Good family drama, does drag at a few places with some really artificial and long drawn out sequences. Amitabh and Akshay are great, Rakhee is adequate, Mohnish overacts at a few places, the rest are passable. The music is good, with the "Ek Dil hai" song being the standout. One time watch

3-0 out of 5 stars Bollywood melodrama of family dynamics
Firstly this isn't a light fluffy movie nor is it arthouse. It is about loyalties and ties in both families and the business world.
There is a typical Indian clan lead by Amitabh Bachchan who is a champion in industry too. He is a mix of exemplary ethics and ego pride and other such human frailties. The family is challenged by many scenarios within that challenge the cohesiveness and loyalties of the group.
There are strong performances by Amitabh, Akshay Kumar playing his son, Juhi Chawla as his daughter, Karisma Kapoor the daughter-in-law and Mohnish Bahl as the new son-in-law and business associate.
It will either encourage you to think deeply about issues raised or alternately may make you decide not to think about them as there are some confused premises at times. For instance there is a long speech about violence not solving anything then a using of mob violence as a solution by the same person that gave the speech! As usual the views of another cultures can be mystifying at times but are still interesting.
This is one of those (long) Bollywoods where people hit the depths then are reinstated through divine intervention, purity of soul, fate/karma or sometimes just cleverness (or a mix of all of these).
I personally didn't find the music that memorable but it was OK, and there really isn't much dancing.
If there is a reason to watch it it is a Bollywood morality play (and they have an appeal in themselves)- and because these A-list actors are almost always very watchable.
I do agree with another reviewer about the subtitles. Mostly they were OK but at times we got a lot of white titles on pale backgrounds that were unreadable- or they just went missing for a short time at another point. I still got the gist though and they weren't the worst I've seen of this. I'll still be keeping this but if you are one that gets annoyed by this sort of problem you may decide otherwise.
