Product Description
Focusing on the representation of South Asian life in the works of four Anglophone writers: V.S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh and Anita Desai, Nyla Ali Khan presents a critical dialogue between these works and contemporary history.Exploring the intertwined topics of nationalism, transnationalism and fundamentalism, she addresses the disrupting and disorientating consequences of dislocation with questions such as:* Does a dislocation enable the regeneration of cultural forces?* Does transnationalism enable a reconstruction respectful of cultural differences?* Does transnationalism allow subjects to engage in reflexive, self-critical distancing from their own cultural discourses?* Do the cosmopolitan political and cultural ideologies of Naipaul, Rushdie, Ghosh and Desai challenge ethnocentric cultural assumptions?Examining these questions in the context of the geographical and cultural dislocation of the era; the reaction to Rushdie's novel, the Indo-Pak war of 1971 and the demolition of the Babri Masjid in India, Khan also discusses:* how complexities bred by practices and identities can reinforce politicization of identity in fundamentalism, xenophobia and espousal of tradition* the local constraints and social moorings affecting transnational writers* the historical and religious forces involved in forging a national identity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eklavya: The Trusted Bodyguard
Eklavya reminds me so much of The Man in the Iron Mask: the plot of having the heir to the throne fathered by the most trusted bodyguard. While the stories are entirely different, I relished every moment watching the interaction between all the characters. Every single one of them light up the screen and embody their different characters so well that one forgets quite easily it's fiction. My favorite scene is when Jackie Shroff gets thrown over the a train track (don't want too give off to many details). I thought it was beautifully shot like every other scene and rather engaging. It's my favorite because it stands out to me the most. In Eklavya, the emotions, and elements of suspense are not lost. This is where I disagree with a previous reviewer. Eklavya is by no means mediocre.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
Eklavya is a story of a royal guard who's faith lies in his duty to protect his master. The old man is played quite effortlessly well by Amitabh Bachchan. The storyline isn't engaging enough and a lot of viewers will complain of the same. The cinematography is beautiful but by the time the end hits you, you lose interest because somehow even though the characters try hard to emote their grief to you, you really do not care. There are few films in Indian Cinema to compare to this one. This film will wrongly be thought to be ahead of it's time and will appeal to a few select base of viewers. For fans of Bollywood, this is quite undewhelming. Watch this if only like me you must give every film a chance. I watched it because it was chosen for Oscars, I doubt it will win, it isn't very long so that doesn't hurt.Everyone of the actors chip in somehow but not one of those films you'd remember any of the great actors for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant Movie
This movie is sort of a gloss on Hamlet, Indian style. I thought it was beautifully shot and well-acted. The script is tight, and the only scene I didn't like was the improbable ending. There are stand-out performances from the usual reliables: Amitabh Bachnan, Imran Bomani, Saif Ali. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent characters andcinematography
Every once in a while I stumble across a great movie like this.Incredible character development.Eloquent dialog.Suspense.Emotion.The subtitles were translated crudley but the clever dialog still came thru. One key is that "Baba" means Father. That wasn't clear till later in the movie.Pay close attention to the dialog and all the double meanings.I would put this right up with Dr. Zhivago.I would buy a new copy if they can get a better translation.I rarely see movies I consider good, so this one really stands out. ... Rikki Thukral (Abhishek Bachchan) born in Bhatinda, living in London; and Alvira Khan (Preity Zinta) more Brit than the Queen herself, however with Lahori blood in her veins.Crowded café. One table to share. Two hours to kill. Perfect setting for the start of a love-story. Hitch? Both Rikki and Alvira are engaged and have come to pick up their fiancés who are coming by the same train. To kill time, they end up telling each other their "how I met my fiancé" stories. Rikki met his fiancé Anaida (Lara Dutta) at The Ritz (Paris), the same night that Princess Diana and Dodi walked out of the hotel and into the paparazzi. As Rikki says, "When two lovers die, another two are a born". They dance... they sing... they're in love!Alvira, a princess by nature discovers her prince at Madame Tussaud's. When a gigantic wax model of Superman falls from the ceiling, Alvira is a sitting target. But Steve the Prince (Bobby Deol), a lawyer by profession saves her life but steals her heart! They also sing, they also dance and they also fall in love...Stories unfold, time passes, the two strangers start enjoying each other. That Alvira is a Pakistani Brit and Rikki originally from India... that Rikki is crooked, earthy, and rakish: dabbler in various businesses; that Alvira is prim-n-proper, wannabe blue-blood, stiff upper-lip: Asst. Manager at House of Fraser's... none of these details matter. They have gotten alarmingly attracted to each other! Their brief encounter has created a complicated quadrangle... Rikki Thukral and Alvira Khan have gotten themselves and Steve and Anaida into a lovely mess... To get out of it both of them bend over backward, thinking quickly on their feet, dancing around each other's emotions... 3-0 out of 5 stars "Sway This Way"
Note: The film is presented in Hindi with English subtitles.

'Jhoom Barabar' is an overall entertaining film of serendipity and kismet unfolding between two strangers who happen to meet at a busy cafe while waiting for a train. A conversation soon ensues and to pass the time they attempt to impress each other by making up an imaginary, romantic tale. They both claim to be waiting for their future mate and express how deliriously happy they are. As you might expect in the course of events they fall in love with each other during the wait and now must swallow their pride and find a way express their true feelings for each other. Neither wanting to let the other know their stories where made up they arrange to meet again and bring along their significant others. Will they continue their mutual charades and lose each other forever or will they find the courage to express their true feelings for each other?

Abhishek Bachchan (Rikki) and Preity Zintal (Alvira) do a solid and believable job of portraying two chance, smitten romantics but I actually preferred the performances of Lara Dutta and Bobby Deol as their make believe lovers. However what really made the movie for me was the four or five intermittent appearances by the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in the whimsical role of a dancing, singing sprite who apparently has some mystical cupid-like connection with the budding relationship between Rikki and Alvira.

Solid production values, recognizable cast and an excellent soundtrack make 'Jhoom Barabar' and easy and enjoyable watch. My rating: -3 Stars-.

good movie, great songs, but there arent that many, like u would expect in a hindi movie

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Movie Ever
This movie is a complete waste of time... would never ever watch it again even if someone paid me to do so... can't believe it's a Yash Raj production.Honestly, this movie doesn't deserve even a single star.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Movie
I was expecting so much from this movie. Especially after watching the previews. I went to see this movie in the theater. What a huge disappointment. This is one of the first Yash Raj films that actually bored me to sleep. The first half was so boring, I wanted to walk out the movie cinema. Finally the second half had a little dancing but that was it.
The music of this movie was nice. Not worth it to buy this dvd. rent it first.I give this movie 3 stars for the music and dancing, not the story line.
