Product Description
This is a monograph on the work of American designer Kyle Cooper, one of the most significant creators of film titles since Saul Bass. His extraordinary title sequence for David Fincher's horror-thriller "Seven" (1995) is credited by many with bringing about a renaissance in innovative title design. Cooper is one of the founders of the Los Angeles-based company Imaginary Forces and has produced a succession of titles for such films as "True Lies", "The Island of Dr Moreau", "Twister", "Mimic", "Donnie Brasco", "Reindeer Games", "Spider-Man" and "Arlington Road". ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Kyle cooper book
this book was very good in informing about Cooper however i wish someone would produce a more in depth look at him as this is the only book about him and research needs depth, the book is good but could be soo much more and there need to be more like it

2-0 out of 5 stars If size does matter...
Then first of all its small. That is, its smaller in size than the average design book. (24X19 cm). I don't know what I was hoping to find there but looking at stills from a work that is very much time and movement oriented seems awkward especially when these breathtaking Film titles are easily found on IF's web site. (imaginaryforces.com) So what is there in the book after all? Anice summery of the (short) history of Title design. Commentary about coopers work. Some nice drafts and sketches for works. (Seven - Coopers most revered work appears in the book only in sketches) Note that they were drawn by storyboard artist and not by cooper.
Kyle cooper a genius of his art deserves much appreciation but if this book does it, well, you be the judge.
As a regular graphic design reference book, any David Carson or such would be better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but Not As Expected
I was thinking this book would be sort of like the Essential/Visual Guides with more detailed illustrations of the places the princesses live. I was disappointed to find out that each location (Cinderella's bedroom, the Beast's library, 7 Dwarfs' cottage, Jasmine's bedroom, and Ariel's grotto) has a fold-out poster that is like a VERY basic look-and-find, since this wasn't indicated anywhere on the book's cover or in it's description. Had I known that the book would be that way, I probably wouldn't have bought it. However, young princess fans will probably be able to enjoy it for hours on end. ... Read more

Product Description
Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus and sparked a boycott that changed America. Harriet Tubman helped more than three hundred slaves escape the South on the Underground Railroad. Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
The lives these women led are part of an incredible story about courage in the face of oppression; about the challenges and triumphs of the battle for civil rights; and about speaking out for what you believe in--even when it feels like no one is listening. Andrea Davis Pinkney's moving text and Stephen Alcorn's glorious portraits celebrate the lives of ten bold women who lit the path to freedom for generations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Let It Shine
Pinkney, A.D.(2000).Let It Shine:Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters.New York:Harcourt, Inc.

015201005x

Oh, that Pinkney family. One after another, successful children's authors and illustrators.

A Coretta Scott King Honor book, Let It Shine chronologically shares the stories of ten black woman who have fought for freedom and civil rights throughout American history. The stories are not so much complete biographical accounts of the women, but rather use child-friendly language to share relevant aspects of their lives. While the accounts are organized chronologically, but do incorporate some overlap in time and even interaction.

Let It Shine does include some well-known freedom fighters, but it also incorporates many lesser-known women whose stories are important to know. One of the ways to make this book particularly relevant to current events, is through the account of Shirley Chisholm's political experiences and run for the Presidency.Pinkney was wise (lucky?) enough to feature Chisholm's quote "Someday, somewhere, somehow, someone other than a white male could be President" (p. 95).Pinkney goes on to include in her conclusion to Chisholm "It proved to everyone else that a little girl from Brooklyn , whose parents could not afford to buy a home, could dare to dream of becoming the number-one tenant of the White House.Shirley had been right:America was changing" (p. 104).Hahaha.And America kept on changing...preparing for Obama to step into that White House.Wonderful conversation starter.

Each account shares only a few if any historical dates or events beyond the dates of birth and death, so a teacher would have to provide support over the setting and significant influences of the time (or have students research them in groups).

The illustrations are bright, colorful and often metaphorical. And while there are not pictures present on every page, enough are distributed throughout the chapters to provide students with breaks and keep them motivated.

Activities to do with the book:

If students were assigned to do reports or presentations on these women, the relevant chapter for that student could be invaluable.A teacher could also incorporate facts from this book into their history lessons.

A teacher could draw out the fact that several of these women had to drop out of school as young children and work to help keep their families together (Fannie Lou Hamer is one example). This fact could help get students to contemplate the evolving expectations and treatments of children throughout history.

Students could examine this book (or Nelson's We Are the Ship, reviewed previously) for personalized language that helps make information books like these ones seem more engaging and familiar.

This is a great resource to keep on the shelf as a reference book or to assign to students on a chapter-by-chapter basis or as recommended reading.

Favorite Quotes:

"On August 28, 1963, one month before I was born, my father stood on Washington D.C.'s great lawn and listened with rapt attention to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivering his unforgettable "I Have a Dream" speech.Just blocks away, in my parents' tiny apartment in southeast Washington, my pregnant mother watched the history-making even on television.Mom says I kicked and squirmed inside her belly throughout Dr. King's powerful speech. And though I was yet to be born, the March on Washington became my earliest experience with the civil rights movement. But there would be countless others" (p. ix).

"[Soujourner Truth]'s voice to a fiery boom of truth--her truth..."You say Jesus was a man, so that means God favors men over women.Where did your Christ come from?" she asked. Then she summoned her father's backbone strength and stood tall to answer her own question."Jesus came from God and a woman.Man had nothing to do with him" (pp. 6-7).

"By this time America had slipped into what was called the Great Depression.Times were hard; there weren't many jobs.Formerly rich folks and poor folks, black folks and white folks, stood together in the same unemployment lines" (p. 49).

5-0 out of 5 stars Ten Inspirational Women...
What do Rosa Parks, Mary McLeod Bethune and Shirley Chisholm all have in common? They're three of the ten extraordinary African American freedom fighters in Andrea Davis Pinkney's marvelous collection, Let It Shine. These are strong women who didn't just sit back and accept the status quo, but met challenges head on and took action to change the world and make it a better place. These ten dynamic women were never silent, even when they thought no one was listening, faced discrimination, inequality and racism, triumphed in their battles against oppression and for civil rights and inspired those who followed in their footsteps.Told in easy to read, conversational style, each chapter is rich in both anecdotal and historical detail and accompanied by Stephen Alcorn's beautiful and bold oil painting illustrations.Perfect for youngsters 10 and older, Let It Shine also makes a wonderful read-aloud book the entire family can share and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Continuing the Legacy
"Let It Shine: The Stories of Ten Black Women Freedom Fighters" is an amazing, entertaining, and educational journey back through time for both children and adults alike. The stories accurately depict the changing face of America for all people. The author, Andrea Davis Pinkney, uses a combination of oral stories and historical facts to re-create the lives of ten African American women "freedom fighters" (a.k.a. civil rights activists.)The descriptive language Pinkney uses keeps the style of the text upbeat and enjoyable.Among the list of women are Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks. However, there is also a presence of many unknown women, such as Shirley Chisholm, an inspirational politician, and Biddy Mason, a one-time slave with never ending generosity. The stories are quite diverse, spanning a history of nearly the entire 20th century. Some of these historical references include the signing of the emancipation proclamation, the peaceful demonstrations of the civil rights movement, and the Democratic Convention of 1968. There is one common, underlying goal of each story- inspiration. From Harriet Tubman's Underground Railroad to Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat, there is a sublte undertone that promotes and requires action. These women learned that justice comes from not only speaking, but doing.Their stories and successes encourage people of all ages to get up and fight against inequality. The combination of descriptive oral stories and historical facts, along with the colorful illustrations, keep readers of any age interested in this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in class tool to assist to understand and deal with Organizational Change
Dr. Andrea Shapiro is a friend and colleague from the days when we were both employed by Nortel Networks, a telecommunications firm recognized for "delivering communications capabilities that enhance the human experience, securing and protecting the world's most critical information."

As I opened the pages of my newly acquired copy of "Creating Contagious Commitment" I was thrilled to see another friend, Helen Sims, provide testimony for this work.

Andrea Shapiro's book: "Creating Contagious Commitment, Applying the Tipping Point to Organizational Change" provides valuable insight on how organizations can optimize their effectiveness through proved decision making.

Dr. Shapiro provides a unique perspective to organizational change because while working for Nortel Networks we experienced only one constant force... change... Throughout many projects and initiatives, such as our global attempt to fine-tune the Supply Chain Management of Nortel, from Customers to suppliers, we learned first hand how to utilize the Tipping Point computer simulations, developed by Dr. Shapiro.

Today, many of us still approach our jobs by utilizing the tools we developed, the strategies we learned to deal with the dynamics that underpin effective organizational change.Simply... best-in-class!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad bad book
You could sum all of this book's content in just one page, even one paragraph: Design processes on the basis of usability. Include inprocess design activities people who will use the process. If you don't convince people about the merits of a new process, they won't use it, worse they will sabotage it. Once the process catches momentum, it will spread quickly.

Now, if you repeat this a thousand times with slightly different sentences, add a thousand "tipping point" phrases, a lot of tables and graphs of questionable use, voila, you have a book.

It is a wonder to me how it got such a high rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
This is a 'must read' for anyone working with groups of people of any size in any organization. Great application for business, schools, churches, volunteers, anyone wanting to motivate people with a common goal, purpose, or vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars gaining insight
I heartily recommend this book to anyone seeking insight into the peculiarities of organizational/workplace change. It has helped me understand why so many workplace "initiatives" seem doomed to failure almost before they have been launched.More important, the author provides concrete examples of remedies to prevent these failures. The author's writing style is clear, jargon-free, and to the point. The examples she uses to illustrate her ideas are clearly stated, and interesting. I read this book after reading the "The Tipping Point" (forgot the author's name, sorry) and found this book to be an excellent companion piece. It beautifully illustrates how tipping point theory is not only relevent but directly applicable to the work place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good things do indeed come in small packages.
In less than 200 pages, Dr. Shapiro provides an informative, engaging overview of change management concepts, principles and tactics. The inclusion of brief cases and summary graphics facilitate understanding and memorization of key points. As a management consultant and educator, I look forward to recommending this book to clients and students seeking practical information on making change work. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date but still on sale
This may have been at one time a good guide, filling a great niche.Unfortunately at this time it is three years old.I found too many errors- specifically reviews and listings for restaurants that have closed, changed names/owners- for it to be trustworthy or even that useful.Granted, I live in the Boulder area and know most of the vegetarian restaurants here and in Denver, so I bought it to find those that I don't know of.Those listed in the guide may or may not even exist anymore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Possibly a great guide for Denver area, seems less so for Salt Lake City
Let me start by saying I think guides like this are desperately needed, but also there is a responsibility of the author to provide fair critiques of the restaraunts chosen and I have major difficulties with some of the reviews given. I focus here mostly on the Salt Lake aspects of the guide, being a resident.

My most major problem with the reviews was a three-star review given to a major national chain. The same review of the same chain appears six times in the guide verbatim. This would be fair, except no other national chain restaraunt appears in the guide, and there is no differences between any of the reviews.

It also does not impress me that several exclusively vegetarian restaraunts ratings have been beaten out by restaraunts having few if any vegetarian or vegan fare. In one instance, a one-star restaraunt's review has no constructive criticism of the food from the establisment, but in the notes above considers the ambience "dingy". In another instance, vegetables accompanying a curry dish (potatoes, baby carrots, and onions) are considered "bland-looking" and needed some "green for both color and taste" - I thought these were the traditional accompaniment for a curried dish and the point was to be bland to offset the curry?

Without nit-picking too much more, the guide is a welcome and needed, but I hope the second edition undergoes a change in the consistancy of the reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for dining out ... I Love it!
Finally a guide book for Denver & Boulder that helps me locate healthy & tasty vegetarian food!I found this book easy to access, well organized, and at times, quite funny.Ms. Mather clearly did her research on this and it shows... I wish I had her job! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems.
I received my book in a very timely manner. It arrived looking completely new, and never opened which was exactly what I was expecting.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy Writer 4th Edition - A Handy Reference
As a professor who requires term papers for certain courses, I highly recommend this little reference book to my students. Yes, I still have the APA style reference guide in my library, but I hardly refer to it ever since I obtained this handy reference, which is also much lighter in weight. As I see it, writing has become a bit of a lost art. It's much easier to cut and paste, as any student knows, to copy others' words. However, only by writing in an optimal manner best to communicate your thoughts and making reference to your "facts" and sources can our society hope to inform others of our rational thinking. This little reference should be on the desk of every student and teacher, in my opinion. Great index, great examples, great desk reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great little reference book
This was required for one of my writing classes, but I will surly keep it for future reference. It has everything you will need for citations in term papers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Online Documentation Guidelines!
Easy Writer: A Pocket Guide / 0-312-25591-8

I have to second all the college graduates here singing the praises of this little pocket guide! The guide covers every major documentation school of thought - and several minor ones that I was unaware of prior to the purchase of this guide. The documentation covers every possible occurrence - from the banal One-Book-One-Author to online pages, spoken conversations, e-mail communication, taped interviews, and on and on.

Many of these occurrences I could not even find documentation guidelines online, let alone in my college texts. The documentation guidelines also provide lucid and useful examples. I recommend this guide highly, if you have a lot of term papers to write and if you have a teacher who is a stickler for documentation!
