Extrait : Lee « Scratch » Perry (de son vrai nom Rainford Hugh Perry, surnommé entre autres « the neat little man » The Upsetter, Pipecock Jaxxton ...
Being hooked on Sherlock Holmes means that the reader may have shelves of related books and consequently about everything said has been said.I will not pinpoint individual stories in this collection, most of which I enjoyed.Only a very few did I find below par and hesitate to name any in either category. We all have different view about Sherlock Holmes and therefore I doubt that the other reviewers and I would agree on every story.I gave this a four star rating rather than a five star rating as there were, as I said, a few I did not care for.As expected there were stories I had read in other volumes, but most I enjoyed reading again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very respectable anthology--with a fun, improbable twist
Few literary characters are as immediately recognizable as Sherlock Holmes. Despite the good number of stories and novellas published by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle starring his famously logical detective and loyal companion, Dr. Watson, readers want more of Holmes and his world. Unsurprisingly, there's a wealth of magazines and authors out there who continue the Sherlock Holmes legacy. What's special about this particular collection is that it plays with the quote once said by Holmes: "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Sometimes in this anthology the impossible may indeed be the answer...

As an editor and anthologist I have to admit that I respect John Joseph Adams quite a lot. Of the handful of his anthologies I've read (Wastelands, The Living Dead-and now The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes), I've found all of them to be well put together and thoughtful. Wastelands had me particularly impressed. The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes didn't disappoint. Of course, take a great anthologist and add in a great concept-how can it go wrong?

Of course, it may just be my bias for Sherlock Holmes, who is the the one literary figure I adore more than any other. Even with that bias aside, I think I'd like this collection. It's particularly good for Holmes fans (I mean, who of us doesn't want to see Moriarty developed further?), but also would work well enough for a neophyte of Holmsian fiction. One doesn't really need too much background to enjoy-and what information Adams gives in the introduction is enough to catch someone up or teach an old fan new things. Like I said, I have to give the man some respect. Still, if you are that neophyte, I urge you to head back to the original Doyle stories. Holmes isn't a character that deserves to be short-changed in any way. (If you need a recommendation on a place to start with classic Holmes, feel free to give The Sign of Four a go. The opening scene is one of my favorites in all of the Sherlock Holmes works.)

Another great thing about the anthology is that it contains 28 stories. The stories are surprisingly all pretty high quality. What few didn't work for me were easily forgotten, because there's many more to enjoy and choose from. I didn't pay much attention to what others wrote what when I was listening, but looking at the story listing afterward, I wish I had. The anthology manages to pull in some pretty big names (and I wish I could say if they lived up to the challenge or not). Here's name a few of the names that struck me curious: Vonda N. McIntyre, Anthony Burgess, Stephen Baxter, Michael Moorcock, Naomi Novik, Neil Gaiman, and Robert J. Sawyer.

Most of the names I pulled out that particularly interest me are known for their contributions to the science fiction/fantasy genres. I don't mean to imply that The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes falls neatly into those categories. Not at all. Adams instead really mixes everything around. All the stories have a strong element of mystery (this is Sherlock Holmes we're talking about), but only a healthy portion of the others dabble in the paranormal. Some mysteries are never fully resolved in the realm of the `possible,' while others just appear paranormal only to be later solved.

For me, the fact that the story might have an impossible ending was enough to really add an extra element of curiosity to the anthology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packing in nearly thirty tales of mystery
John Joseph Adams edits stories by various writers in THE IMPROBABLE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, packing in nearly thirty tales of mystery with Holmes as the key. Simon Vance and Anne Flosnik provide fine dual narrations here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Anthology
I liked these stories. For the most part, they were true to the Holmes spirit. And speaking of spirits, some of the stories had a supernatural slant, and some had a rational explanation. This is far more satisfactory to me than the selection of stories in some other collections, notably Gaslight Grotesque and Gaslight Grimoire, which were all stories that dipped into the woo.I like a good ghost story as well as anybody, but I more so like to be kept guessing. This anthology did that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes
We were very disappointed with this audio book.It talked a lot about the history of SH and preperation for the actual story. The story reading was very slow and not exciting at all.Fortunately we had other books to listen to as our trip was 3500 miles. ... Read more
