Excerpt: Maxine Kline (born September 16, 1929) is a former female starting pitcher who played from 1948 through 1954 with the Fort Wayne Daisies of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Listed at 5' 7", 130 lb., she batted and threw right-handed. During seven years Kline was one of the best overhand pitchers in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She relied on a fastball-changeup combination, mixing in her curveball sparingly, with an impeccable control over location. A five-time All-Star, she hurled two no-hitters, averaged 17 wins per season with a career-high, league-leading 23 in 1950, and again led all pitchers with 18 wins in 1954, during what turned out to be the AAGPBL's final season. She ranks third in the All-Time list with a .678 winning percentage and fifth with 116 wins. In three seasons her earned run average dropped below 2.00, for a cumulative 2.05 ERA in 1,518 innings of work. A native of North Adams, Michigan, Kline grew up in the close-knit of Addison. The daughter of German farmers, she had seven sisters and two brothers. Kline played softball while growing up and later attended North Adams High School, where she led the basketball team to three undefeated seasons. She later attended an AAGPBL tryout in Fort Wayne, Indiana and earned a contract to play with the local Daisies, joining the team after her graduation in 1948. Initially playing with a softball, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League eventually employed a regulation baseball, with overhand pitching permitted starting in 1948. Young King Arthur, troubled by nightmares, doubts he is the rightful king of England. One rainy night, the wizard Merlin tells Arthur the story of dueling dragons and a fateful clash between good and evil, which reveals the surprising secret of the boy king's true legacy. 5-0 out of 5 stars A bedtime story for a king
Merlin tells a young King Arthur a story to put his fears to rest so that the young boy may get some rest.

Retold from legends. Great pictures. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars How Arthur Learned About his Father
The King Arthur legend is a treasure trove of children's stories. The worst way to approach the legend is to try to tell the whole story in one book. The legend is just too rich with detail for this approach to work. It is better to select individual stories and rework them for children.

This is the approach Jane Yolen uses in "Merlin and the Dragon".The story takes place soon after Arthur has pulled the sword out of the stone and centers on how Merlin revealed to Arthur that he is the son of Uther Pendragon. The book is well written and beautifully illustrated and is a pleasure for both adults and children.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to the world of King Arthur
This picture book by Jane Yolen is an excellent introduction to the world of King Arthur. The story is shared by Merlin to a young Arthur whose sleep has been disturbed by dreams. The pictures are excellent and the story is well written.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Book
(...)

Merlin and the Dragons is a very good book, because there are dragons in this book. Dragons are my favorite animals because they breathe fire, and they look cool.
There were lots of cool action scenes. My favorite action scene was when the tower falls because the dragon's eggs are rumbling.
The illustrations looked real. The illustrations helped me understand the book, because the words aren't very descriptive.
I recommend this book for 7 to 70 years old.
The theme is that some people are sometimes alike.
There were lots of conflicts. There were dragons fighting. And there were kings fighting the dragons.
These are some of the characters. There were the kings armies; they were really strong, because they killed a dragon. There were two dragons, they had red and white scales, long tales, and they breath fire. The king has a gold crown.
Now I will tell you some of the story. Once upon a time there was a boy named Arthur he did not want to be a king yet. One day he had a bad dream so he went to Merlin. Merlin told him a story about another boy, who's a king too, and he wanted to build a watchtower. And the king's workers finished building it and the next day it fell down, then the king's workers built it again and again but it still fell.
Later the king's workers dug under the rocks and they found two dragon's eggs, then the king's workers smashed the eggs and the eggs hatched into fierce dragons.
If you want to know the end read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read

It is about a boy named Emrys. He lives in a small village. One day a cruel and ruthless king named Vortigern wanted to build a watchtower in the village. He told the men to work as slaves to build the tower. When they had finished building the tower it fell! So they built it again and it fell again. What they needed was Emrys's blood. When the guards had found the right child Emrys told them that you needed to kill two dragons. They dug a hole where the dragons lived.
I don't want to tell you what happens next. You'll have to read the fantastic book Merlin and the Dragons. What I liked about the book is that it had a lot of verbs, adjectives, and nouns. What I liked about the illustrations was that they had a lot of detail. I liked the characters because they were greatly drawn and they were very cool. It was a great book and I really enjoyed it. I would compare this book to MERLIN. What ages I would recommend are 6 and up it is also a great read aloud book. The moral of the book is even if you are different you can make a change. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
I first heard of Hosho McCreesh when he submitted several poems to fivesevenfive.blogspot.com around a year ago.
Nearly a year later, I received a handwritten postcard from him, saying hello and informing me about his new book. I immediately bought it and couldn't have been more impressed.
I feel that poetry is one outlet that will never reach the masses again, which is very unfortunate because people like Hosho are on this planet, writing amazing things.
This book is full of simplistic imagery about the human condition that will play with your emotions and mind.
For someone interested in poetry and not sure what to try, this book is perfect.
For a seasoned writer or reader, this book is a breath of fresh air and shows you that this world still has great writers.
They're just a little harder to find.

5-0 out of 5 stars some of the most relevant poetry around...
if you've not picked up this perfect bound paperback with its stunning art and fantastic design, coupled with some of the strongest poems Hosho has ever put in a collection, then you're really missing out. this thing is a monster, every poem hits hard, images that burn, lines that churn the guts, glimpses into the pure heart of the nightmare where hope is a pinprick of light in the far far distance, and might be an illusion in the end. these are poems of rage and suffering, but also of compassion and a deep abiding love of life.some haiku brief, some full of rumbling word choices and striking visuals.

this book is a beautiful thing, and not yet "uselessly and carelessly destroyed..." by the world it seeks to carve some sense out of.

buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best's rhytmic expressions are engaging, occasionally insightful, and always thoughtful and thought-provoking
Although the title of B. J. Best's little volume of poetry is "State Sonnets", the verses that comprise it not only derive from a diversity of states, they also include some cities, a couple of Canadian provinces, Puerto Rico, and the Niagra Falls. Throughout them all is the call of the road, romances of the heart, and a poet's very special perspective. A master word-smith, Best's rhytmic expressions are engaging, occasionally insightful, and always thoughtful and thought-provoking, making "State Sonnets" highly recommended reading for those who appreciate succinctly crafted and imaginative verse.
